How did it all start? The original Hollywood area was bought by H.J Whitney, from the E.C Hurd ranch in 1902, who also coined the name. However, the area didn't get its movie picture start until 1910, being the location for the short film In Old California. The first Hollywood movie studio appeared in 1912, called the Nestor Motion Picture Company and four more major film companies- Paramount, Columbia, Warner Bros. and RKO followed likewise, their films impressed audiences worldwide. By 1920, Hollywood was already a world-famous household name for movie studios and lovers of the silver screen. Have there been any changes? Over the last 40 years: The studios have relocated to other Los Angeles areas. Ancillary industries such as film editing, post- production, props and lighting companies have enhanced film effects that in the past were thought to be impossible. The famous Walk of Fame has continued to grow and has more than 2500 stars embedded on the sidewalks.

Are all Hollywood movies the same?All Hollywood movies are unique in their own way. However, over the years movies have been grouped in categories based on their genres but all desire pure audience entertainment. The main film genres are:

Action: contains high energy, physical stunts and non-stop motion;

Adventure: exciting stories with new inventions and experiences.

Comedy: light hearted plots designed to amuse and provoke laughter

Drama: serious presentations which are driven on the plot, portraying realistic incidents and characters.

Epics/Historical: based on events of the past such as the world wars or religious events.

Horror: frightening, terrifying, captivating and invoke our hidden worst fears.

Musicals/Dance: centred on combinations of music, dance and songs.

Sci-fi: visionary, imaginative, impossible journeys and improbable settings.

Who is part of major film studio?A major film studio is a production and distribution company that releases a substantial number of films annually and consistently commands a significant share of box office revenue in a given market. In the North American, Western, and global markets, the major film studios are Warner Bros. Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Picture. They are the six diversified media firms whose various film production and distribution command approximately 90 percent of U.S. and Canadian box office revenue.
