FOUNDING STORY

Kuli Kuli’s founder Lisa Curtis got her first taste of moringa as a Peace Corps volun-teer in a small village in Niger. As a vegetar-ian, she was eating mostly rice and millet — a diet that left her feeling sluggish. When she mentioned her fatigue to women at the community health center, they suggested she try moringa. She bought moringa leaves from a neighbor’s tree and mixed them with a popular peanut snack called kuli-kuli. She soon felt better and began to work with villagers to encourage them to use moringa. Lisa founded Kuli Kuli to help women in West Africa use more moringa locally and earn a sustainable livelihood by selling a portion of each harvest to the US.

After returning to the US, Lisa, along with co-founders Valerie Popelka, Jordan Mon-charmont, and Anne Tsuei, launched Kuli Kuli through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign which raised $53,000, making it the most popular food campaign Indiegogo had ever had at the time. In 2015, Kuli Kuli announced an initiative with Whole Foods Market, the Clinton Foundation’s Haiti Pro-gram, and the Smallholder Farmers Alliance to plant hundreds of moringa trees in Haiti and sell a Moringa Green Energy Shot made with Haitian moringa. As part of this new initiative, Kuli Kuli launched a second crowd-funding campaign that raised $100,000 from over 500 people. This ambitious new project will help reforest Haiti with drought-tolerant moringa trees while providing Haitian small-holder farmers access to the growing market for moringa leaf powder.

WHAT IS MORINGA? Kuli Kuli is America’s leading moringa brand. We provide the high-est quality and most nutritious moringa available. Kuli Kuli’s mor-inga is rich in iron, calcium, vitamins, and antioxidants. Our moringa provides a complete protein with all 9 essential amino acids. By hand-harvesting only fresh, young leaves, Kuli Kuli ensures that our organic moringa powder is more nutrient-dense and less bitter than anything else on the market. Taste the Kuli Kuli difference.

Once eaten by the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians, Moringa oleifera leaves have been used in traditional medicine passed down for centuries in many cultures. Native to South Asia, this rapidly growing tree is now widely used throughout the tropics. Moringa’s high levels of protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin C and Vitamin A has led many organiza-tions to advocate the plant as a “natural nutrition for the tropics.” Kuli Kuli works with local nonprofits across Africa and Haiti to encourage the growth and use of moringa as a tool for nutritional security.

In the Ayurvedic system of medicine Moringa is said to cure or prevent around 300 diseases. More recently, the modern scientific community has begun to validate many of these claims with over 1500 studies, articles and publications on moringa. The wide array of studies has led the Kuli Kuli team to dub moringa the “multivitamin in a leaf.”

M O R E A N T I OX I D A N T S T H A N O T H E R G R E E N SMoringa contains high concentrations of antioxidants called phenolic acids and flavonoids which helps in protecting our bodies from the oxidative stress of free radicals. Antioxidants help fight free radicals reducing risk of cancer, heart disease, neural degeneration. A study by Seshadri and Nambiar showed that moringa leaves contain higher levels of antioxidants than other commonly found leafy greens such as spinach and kale. 1

T H E H E A R T-H E A LT H Y G R E E NMoringa contains beneficial compounds that help protect and prevent your heart from risk of heart attacks, heart failure, and other cardiovascular diseases. In a 2009 and another 2012 study, lab rats treated with Moringa leaf extract supported these claims and showed use of moringa significantly protects the heart through improving heart function by preventing the bad fats from accumulating in your heart.2 Another study also showed the rats showed 40% to 75% decrease in blood pressure with respect to the dosage of moringa leaf extract they were receiving.3 Similar results were found with decreased blood pressure in lab guinea pigs.4 Moringa not only provides a natural alternative to protecting your heart but also boosts nutritional content as well.

A L A C TAT I O N E N H A N C E R Research has shown that moringa helps to increase milk production in new mothers and improve the nutritional quality of the milk. Moringa is shown in several studies as a galactagogue.5 For mothers with preterm infants, the consumption of moringa leaves increased milk production on postpartum days 4-5.6 Full-term mothers consuming moringa also experienced a significant increase in milk production in one week. Additional studies found that infants with mothers consuming moringa gained weight faster and more consistently than those fed by mothers who did not use moringa. During weaning period of a child, studies have suggested incorporating moringa into weaning foods to boost nutrition. The suggested serving for nursing mothers is six tablespoons and three tablespoons for a child between one to three years old.7

A D I A B E T E S T R E AT M E N T Throughout many cultures and highly common in the Hispanic culture, moringa has been used as a household remedy as an anti-diabetic treatment. Multiple studies in animal and human subjects found conclusive evidence that moringa leaves helps significantly reduce blood glucose and cholesterol, serving as a valuable and potent treatment for diabetes.8,9 Further studies were done to compare moringa leaf extract against standard diabetic drugs such as Tolbutamid and Glipizide. Results showed that moringa is more effective at lowering blood glucose levels than the standard drugs issued as anti-diabetic treatment.10
