What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What does a production company and a distributor do?

• A production company handles a lot of things such as the budgeting, scheduling, scripting, etc., all the way to post-production, distribution and marketing of a production. They take their production (film, TV show, etc.) all the way from an idea to its end when it’s completed. They’re responsible for finding a director and actors, and also for the things that go wrong such as the damage of props or property, or cast member injuries.

• A distributor (film) is a person or company who is responsible for the marketing of a film, and are in charge of things like the release date of a film and the ways it’s made for viewing, for example whether it goes into cinemas or is just for home viewing. They decide where, when and how the film gets shown.

The Production company logos you have chosen and or created and why?

• The logo I chose for my production company was one I made myself, called Rocket Jump Productions. Whilst it was at first an inspiration from the game Team Fortress 2, I then realised I’d subconsciously taken the idea from an online-based company called Rocket Jump who make popular shows such as Video Game High School and post them onto their website and Youtube.

Why you have chosen the distribution companies you have to release your film

• I haven’t chosen any distribution companies to release my film and have opted to self-distribute the film instead. This is because it’s a lot cheaper to self-distribute, and since my company is very new and not too well off, saving as much money as possible by using methods such as self-distribution is effective in saving money.

• There are drawbacks to this, such as the amount of people we can reach to show our film to is potentially a lot less than the amount of people a distribution company would be able to distribute our product to.

• However I think the money will even out, and by distributing the movie ourselves we’ll be able to get the movie to the exact people we intended it to be seen by.

How might your film have been funded?• There are multiple ways to get movies

funded. A simple way is through crowdfunding, and putting the movie project on a website like ‘kickstarter’. It can easily fail, but if the fundraiser gets a lot of attention it has the potential to rack up thousands of pounds.

• In the case of the film ‘Shifty’ which was taken on by Metrodome, the distribution company was invited to a screening of the film, whereupon Metrodome looked for what genre it was and whether there was any star talent in it. They were blown away by how good the film was despite a first-time director and team of first-time producers, alongside not-well-known actors. Interested in Shifty, they acquired the film and distributed it.
