The summer auction season kicks off with Mecum’s spectacular back to back June events -- St. Paul’10 at MSRA’s Back to the 50’s on June 18-19 and Bloomington Gold’10 at Bloomington Gold Corvettes USA on June 25-26.

Part of the goal of the MECUM 101 series is to help potential buyers and sellers better understand the fundamentals of car collecting and to have the best possible experience at a Mecum Auction. This issue touches on the basics of vehicle research and where to find useful information. While some manufacturers maintain their production records, others do not. Some records are actually in private hands as a result of being destroyed or misplaced over the years. In the spirit of the Pontiac invasion that took place at Dana’s Mecum’s 23rd Annual Spring Classic where over 170 Pontiacs crossed the block, we felt it was best to cover that marque first. Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler, and other makes will be in future editions. Pontiac production records are available from two different sources depending on the vehicle model year. For model years 1961 thru 1986, factory production records are available from PHS Automotive Services, Inc. For a nominal fee, PHS can provide color, trim, engine, transmission, and optional equipment ordered for a specific vehicle and determine

MEET THE MECUM TEAM

PAUL WEGNER. A little over 10 years ago, “Big Paul” Wegner walked onto the Mecum auction block. A grinder from Day 1, Paul works closely with every seller to help get their car sold. As the liaison between the the seller, the auctioneer on the podium, and Dana Mecum himself, he could be considered the “Dealmaker’s” right hand man. “This is a serious business, but its all about having fun,” says Wegner. When asked what has been the biggest change seen since starting with Mecum Auctions, Wegner replies, “Going from the little, one day sales in a pop up tent, to the mega-events we put on today has been a wild ride to the top.” M

DAWN VOIE, as head of the consignment department, ensures every vehicle consigned is properly entered into our system. Cross checking titles, VINs, descriptions, etc. and getting all paperwork organized and entered for each event are Dawn’s domain. Starting with Mecum Auction over 7 years ago answering phones and entering data by hand, she’s played a key role in setting up the automated data technology in place at Mecum today. When asked about Mecum and the future, she replies, “As we continually automate, I’m excited to see how our consignment process continues to get easier and more user friendly for our customers. We pride ourselves on customer service, and I’m happy that we keep working to make it even better.” M

GREG SMELTZER joined the Mecum Auction road team back in 1998. Along with his wife Lynn, Greg worked in customer service at Bloomington Gold Corvettes USA when Dana began hosting auctions in conjunction with the event. From there, Greg and Lynn have remained on the Mecum circuit and have worked every auction since. With an organized and dedicated personality, it’s fitting that Greg is the longest lasting member of the vehicle coordination team. After vehicles are checked in, Smeltzer carefully and accurately positions the vehicles in their proper parking areas to be viewed by potential buyers. As a hobbyist, Greg is an avid Camaro enthusiast and owns a ’67 Convertible and a ’69 Coupe. M
