MECANO CABLE is a tool providing a static and dynamicanalysis of the nonlinear behaviour of structures consisting ofcables, taking into account any possible electromagnetic andaerodynamic loads.
It is a component of the set of nonlinear MECANO softwares, which also comprises MECANO STRUCTURE devoted tostructural nonlinearities, and MECANO MOTION, devoted tothe study of flexible mechanisms.
This software has undergone many experimental validations, inparticular in the case of the mechanical effects of short circuits.
Static analysis of complex structures made upof slack or weakly tautened cables.
Various dimensional constraints may be imposedin view of the final desired configuration, e.g. thetension in chosen components at a giventemperature, the sag…
TYPES OF ANALYSES
MECANO CABLE allows any type of dynamic or staticanalysis. The electromagnetic loads are evaluatedcontinuously , and include the heating up resultingfrom short circuit currents.
Classical damping can be included in the timeintegration scheme (Newmark, HHT) which isavailable with a fixed or automatically updated timestep.
Moreover, coupling with the other SAMCEF modulesallows e.g. a modal extraction from an equilibriumposition of the structure.
TYPES OF ANALYSES
Study of the dynamic behaviourof the Normandy Bridge, France
(SAMTECH, JANSSEN Eng.)
The Normandy Bridge
MECANO CABLE includes a generator ofturbulent wind samples, based on aspectrum with known spatial coherenceand vertical profile.
Dynamic behaviour ofan antenna (JanssenEng., LERC)
Dynamic analysis, up to the point wherea possible limit cycle occurs, of structures
exhibiting known aerodynamiccharacteristics which could depend onangle of incidence. This study allows anassessment of the efficiency of control
devices and dampers.
Tension in cables resultingfrom a short-circuit
Transient dynamic analysis of electricalnetwork substructures (overhead lines, rigidbar or cable stations, distribution boxes, reactance, coil head, …) after the occurrenceof a two- or three-phase short circuit.

USER INTERFACE
• Menus and acquisition boxesallow the user to input data veryeasily
• An integrated CAD modellerfacilitates modelling and dataapplication
• Groups allow the user to doaway with numbering nodes andmeshes
• A function manager makes theinput of variable data much easier
• The control language isparametrizable

AVAILABLE RESULTS
Time evolution of quantities such as node displacements, tension in cables, beam deflections, distances between “macro-cables”. Time animation and visualization of the structures at anyinstant in time.

ELEMENTS
The large-displacement small-deformation formalism is applied to beams and cables. Cable elementshave two nodes and 4 degrees of freedom per node (3 translation d.o.f. and the tangent rotation).Bending is deliberately neglected so as to accelerate convergence of very slender structures.
A pulley element is available as well as the idea of a “macro-cable” (set of cable elements) to which afunction can be applied such as compliance with a maximum deflection or post-evaluation of theminimal distance between two “macro-cables”.
ELEMENTS
Moreover, these structures madeup of cable and beam elementscan be combined with themechanism, structural or usercomponents available inMECANO.

Starting from aclassical list of
specifications, HVSensures automatic
discretization, a well-ordered computation
and retrieval of theresults which give the
maximal reactionloads for each
external load patternchosen by the user.
HVS is a professional tool derivedfrom MECANO, which allows to
use it as a black box for typicalbus-bars (rigid or flexible) design
in substations.
