Absolute pressure (Pabs)

The pressure which applies to the va-cuum in the universe (zero pressure) isknown as absolute pressure. Absolutepressure has “abs” as its index.

MMeasuring principle

When designing pressure meters, the principle of the effect of pressure on a defined area is almost always used. This is thenretraced to a measurement of force.

The following formula applies:

Differential pressure, pressure difference(Δp)

The difference between two pressuresp1 and p2 is known as pressure diffe-rence (Δp= p1-p2). If the difference bet-ween two pressures is a variable, this isreferred to as differential pressure (p1,2).

Atmospheric pressure difference, posi-tive pressure

Atmospheric pressure difference (pe) isthe difference between an absolutepressure (pabs) and the respective atmo-spheric pressure (pe = pabs - pamb). Thisis generally referred to as positive pres-sure.

Atmospheric air pressure (Pamb)

This is the most important pressure for life on earth. Atmospheric pressure is crea-ted by the weight of the atmosphere surrounding the earth. The atmosphere rea-ches a height of up to approx. 500 km. Pressure decreases constantly up to thisheight (absolute pressure Pabs = zero). Atmospheric air pressure is also influencedby fluctuations in the weather. The average Pamb at sea level is 1013.25 Hectopas-cal (hPa) or millibar (mbar/ normal pressure in accordance with DIN 1343). Typicallythis value can fluctuate by ±5 % if there are low or high pressure weather areas.

Types of pressure metersAdvantages: Electrical pressure meters

There is a displacement of 1-3 mm inelastic pressure meters. The deformation in electrical pressuresensors is only a few μm. Due to thisvery low mechanical deformation, elect-rical pressure meters / sensors have anexcellent dynamic performance and lowmaterial stress resulting in high endu-rance levels and long-term stability.Electrical pressure meters can also bemanufactured in very small sizes.

An additional advantage is the easy-to-read display. Considering today’s tech-nology standards, accurate pressuremeasurement is becoming more andmore important. Precision measuring

meters have an accuracy of ±0.05 % ofthe full-scale value. In the case of me-chanical manometers, such accuraciescannot be read on account of the paral-lax error and mechanical performanceof the springs. Electrical precision me-ters with LCD display often have a reso-lution in the thousandth range of 0.001.

Liquid pressure meters– U-tube manometer– Inclined tube manometer– Multi-liquid manometer– Float manometer

Pressure balances with sealing liquid

Piston pressure meters– Piston pressure meters with spring-

loaded piston– Piston pressure scales

Elastic pressure meters

Electric pressure sensors and pressure meters– Sensor principles with strain meters– Sensor principles with path measure-

ment– Compression meter– Ionisation pressure meter– Friction meter

Unique

Efficient measurement due to ab-solute pressure compensation

testo 314 independently compen-sates fluctuations in absolutepressure during volume flow mea-surement via absolute pressurecompensation.

Fast

Zeroing phase for connected pipe

To determine ΔP efficiently andquickly, zeroing to ambient airpressure takes place while themeasurement is in progress. Thiseliminates interruptions and remo-val of pipes.

Efficient

Measuring using standard testpressure compensation with fee-ding unit

The flow test which is indepen-dent of gas mains, has the advan-tage that pressure fluctuations inpipes can be compensated. Thebuilt-in flow pressure controller(gas bubble with gas feeding unit)compensates for fluctuations. Thefinely adjusted value is displayedin testo 314 along with the lea-kage amount.

Configuration settings in instrumentAll of the important parameters in the in-strument can be easily adapted on yourPC using the PC software for testo 525;regardless of whether you wish tochange a unit or measuring rate or wishto activate smoothing. No problem. Sim-ply select the required value using thepull-down menu and it is transmitted toyour instrument straightaway.

Readout memoryData is transferred to a file on your harddisk, where it is permanently filed, whenthe “Readout memory” button is pres-sed. The data can also be shown in atable. Important information such maxi-mum/minimum and mean value appearin the top lines. The data can also beprinted or transferred to Excel.

Online Measurement All of the measurement data can be readstraightaway from the graphic appearingin the initial screen. The data is automa-tically saved during online measurement.

High speed testo 525 carries out 10/20 measure-ments per second. Fast measurement isnecessary so that pressure drops can berecognised and recorded. In the case ofhigh speed measurements, the user canselect when the measurement is to bestarted.

The following can be selected: immediatelyMeasurement starts running ad hocOvershootingMeasurement starts once a specific limitvalue is overshot UndershootingMeasurement starts once a specific limitvalue is undershot.

A trigger mode can also be set up. If alimit value is exceeded, you can deter-mine how long afterwards measure-ments can continue. Recording stopsonce the specified time has been rea-ched. If the limit value is again exceeded, recording begins again. This mode isideal for troubleshooting systems.

Wide selection of probes

• Measurement protocols can be prin-ted on site. No awkward cables requi-red on account of the infraredinterface.

• Long-term legible thermal paper en-sures that measurement data docu-mentation can be stored for up to 10years.

Documentation on site

• The saved measurement data can beeasily analysed and processed usingthe software available.

• Readings are taken by the instrumentand can be depicted online by thesoftware.

• Pressure drops can be protocolledonline in cycles of 0.05 seconds in the

Fast Measurement menu. Since, inmost cases, pressure drops cannotbe predicted, a rule can be definedvia the trigger function; the pressuredrops are then filtered out and storedseparately for the user in indexedpages.

Easy data management via PC

All transmitters or non-Testo probes (in 2or 4 wire systems, 18 V) can be con-nected to the 4 to 20 mA interface. Sca-ling is carried out on the hand-heldmeasuring instrument.

Major benefit: The transmitter connecteddoes not need its own power; it is sup-plied by the testo 521 or testo 526 pres-sure meter.

Inspection of transmitters with 4 to 20 mA interface

• Measurement data can be saved se-parately or as a measurement series. The measurement rate (0.04 seconds,1 second to 24 hours) and the num-ber of values to be saved are freelyselectable. The maximum memorysize is 25,000 readings.

• The readings are saved under sepa-rate names for the sites (max. 99sites) - with retracing guarantee.

• Online measurement for large quanti-ties of data can be activated via PC.

The sensor is permanently moni-tored and shows malfunctions orcontamination in the display. Theuse of test leaks is thus no longernecessary. If dirty, the sensor canbe easily cleaned and is immedia-tely ready for use again.

When leaks are detected, the dis-play changes from green to red.An audible signal additionally in-forms of leakages detected.Using the earplug, the testo 316can also be used in loud surroun-dings. The maximum indicatorfunction shows maximum leaka-ges and so facilitates the identifi-cation of leakage locations. Theflexible gooseneck allows the op-timum positioning of the sensorclose to the piping or the leakagelocation.

A simple change of sensor by theuser turns the 316-4 into an am-monia detector.

"EasyKool" software manages all custo-mer addresses, systems and individualcustomer and system information. Thedata recorded relating to repairs, leaktests or evacuations in refrigeration sys-tems can therefore be easily allocated tocustomers. The most important data such as custo-mer address, system, refrigerants anddate are automatically fed into tables orgraphs.

Managing refrigerants and downloadingnew refrigerantslPC software lists all of the available refri-gerants. Additional refrigerants can bedownloaded at any time to the analysersusing the Testo website and software.

Up to 40 refrigerants can be managedon testo 556 and testo 560 at any onetime. All – or the refrigerants identified inthe list by a mouse click – can be added. In this way each refrigeration systemanalyser can be individually equippedwith refrigerants.

"EasyKool" software can do even more...- Reads out and deletes memory con-

Save time and money when analysingerrorsIf the performance of a refrigeration unitslacks off or a system registers "Error", itcould be for any number of reasons: airin the refrigerant circuit, leaks in pipesand therefore loss of refrigerant, dirt inevaporators or condensers etc.

By recording the pressures and tempe-ratures measured over a longer period oftime, it is not necessary to monitor thesystem for several hours at a time. Therecorded data is analysed in the fastesttime on your PC.

testo 556 and testo 560 save all the rea-dings quickly and reliably. Electronic refri-geration system analysers can store over60,000 readings. In this way, large-scalemeasurement series lasting several dayscan be logged without any problem.

Measurement data stored in the analy-sers is transmitted to your PC using theinterface cable. The data is shown ingraph or table form.
