“That Rock Was Christ”
Our lesson this morning is from Matthew 5:17-18 in which
Jesus describes himself as the fulfillment of the old law.
God had planned on sending Jesus as the savior of sinful
humanity from before creation (1 Pet. 1:20), and he gave
portraits of the coming Christ to Israel in their law by both
prophecies and types. A type is an Old Testament person,
place, thing or event that pictures beforehand the person
and/or work of Jesus.
One interesting type that Paul speaks of was the rock from
which God gave Israel water during their wilderness
wanderings (1 Cor. 10:4). Twice--once in the first year of
wandering and once in the fortieth year of wandering--God
is said to have provided Israel water from rocks when
Moses struck them (Exod. 17:1-7; Num. 20:1-13).
Interestingly enough God commanded Moses to strike the
first rock with his staff (Exod. 17:5-6), but he only ordered
him to speak to the second rock with staff in hand (Num.
20:8). When Moses struck the second rock, even though
water gushed forth, God rebuked Moses and on that account
punished him by not allowing him to enter the Promised
Land (Num. 20:12).
Why would God condemn Moses for doing the very thing
that he approved of forty years before? I think that part of
the answer lies in the nature of the rocks. Though it seems
clear that these were two different rocks, Paul interprets
them as one rock that typified Jesus. Jesus provided the
water of life (John 4:13-14) to his people when Israel struck
him in the crucifixion (Acts 13:27; Matt. 26:31). The
Hebrews writer makes much of the fact that Jesus was
struck once for all time (Heb. 7:27; 9:28). After Jesus was
struck that one time he provides water to any who call upon
him (Rom. 10:13); he doesn't have to be struck a second
time. Thus Moses was condemned because he broke the
type--he obscured the picture of Jesus--by striking the rock
a second time.
Jesus said, "You study the Scriptures diligently because you
think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very
Scriptures that testify about me" (John 5:39 NIV).
