‘Divestment is very muchat the top of our agenda’

What are Tata Power’s nextgeneration plans in powerand how do customers profitfrom it?We are eyeing new growth inemerging areas prevailing inEuropean and Americancountries. These areas markthe convergence of electricaltechnology, IT andcommunication technology.In each of these areas, we aretalking of leadership. And, weare ensuring that thesetechnologies are effective inthe Indian context. We dodemand response and alsobattery storage solutionswhich we have done recentlyin Delhi. We are talkingabout EV (electricvehicle) chargingfacilities and how wecan manage the loadeven when a largenumber of EVs have tobe connected to thegrid.

So, are these technologiesdeveloped in-house or areyou tying up with foreignplayers?For development oftechnologies, we havepartners like Siemens IBMand 3M. They develop thetechnology but they do notknow how to use it – like thebenefits that can come to theconsumers, the utilities andthe stakeholders. We arepartnering the whole lot oftechnology partners who arebig international names. Thatapart, we are tying up withinstitutions we work veryclosely like MIT, University ofChicago and other researchinstitutions.

Can you give us a peek intohow these technologieswork?Look, there are days when youhave more consumption anddays with less consumption(of power). We need tomanage the load. Today, weare sourcing energy fromdifferent power plants. Thereare coal-based plants andintermittent renewablepower. You cannot have ascenario of excess or deficientpower. For optimum loadmanagement, we do a whole

lot of data analytics. Also, wedo machine learning, andbased on that, we do accuratedata prediction.

Say for instance, if thedemand surges during peakhours, you can tie up withthe large commercialconsumers and check ifthey can reduce load for anhour.

Or, during afternoon in ashopping mall, when thereisn't much load, they canrun four or even twoescalators instead of eight.Under home automation,we enable the consumers tomanage their load by

controllingappliances likeair conditionersand washingmachines whilethey are in officeor elsewhere.Similarly, if you

have to charge 100 e-vehicles simultaneously,you have to manage theload in such a way that itdoes not lead to burning oftransformers.

This distributionmanagement system is onlydone by Tata Power. Wehave integratedcomponents like SCADA(Supervisory Control & DataAcquisition) and GIS.

Coming to your corebusiness, have youabandoned plans to buildnew coal-fired plants?We are not building anygreenfield coal basedprojects. We feel the long-term PPAs (power purchaseagreements) will not come.There are a large number ofstressed power projects –good projects in terms oftechnology and equipment.So, we are looking at thosesort of opportunities.

You also have a firm focuson building your greenpower portfolio...Renewable energy is ourkey area of growth.Presently, our renewablecapacity is around 3000Mw. We will be adding fourtimes over to reach 12,000Mw in the next three to five

years. Our growth will bedriven primarily by solar.We are looking atinvestment structures thathelp us.

So, is Tata Power also opento tapping InfrastructureInvestment Trusts?We keep looking at theseopportunities. There aresome issues andgovernment guidelines. Wewill go for anything thatbrings value to ourshareholders.

Your debt has beenswelling. How do you planto contain it?We are working onmanaging debt. We havestarted the divestmentprocess. We will divest allnon-core assets. If debt isnot able to be serviced, wewill have a problem. We arelooking at divesting some ofthe foreign assets – the onesin Zambia and South Africa.Selectively, we are alsolooking at divesting non-core businesses in India.investment is very much atthe top of our agenda.

Will Tata Power retain theMundra plant in itsportfolio or are you lookingto sell it off?It (Mundra plant) will be verymuch a part of our portfolio.We have started negotiatingwith states on reworking thePPAs. For stressed assets ingeneral, we keep workingclosely with the governmenton how we can make themfinancially viable so that theyhave long-term PPAs and fuelsupply arrangements.

Cement firms use waste as fuelAMRITHA PILLAY

The fuel mix of cement manu-facturers is going through achurn. The last decade saw

cement companies partially substitutecoal with pet coke.

However, the fuel mix now includesplastics and tyres, as companies lookto rejig their sourcing.

“Our fuel mix currently comprisesalternative fuels at 7 per cent.According to Geocycle (a waste man-agement solution), the estimatedamount in the long-term will be 13 percent,” an official from AmbujaCements had said last month.

The company has adoptedGeocycle as a co-processing techniquefor industrial and other wastes at itskilns.

Co-processing refers to the use ofwaste materials in industrial process-es as alternative fuel or raw material.Due to the high temperature in thecement kiln, different types of wastescan be effectively disposed of withoutharmful emissions, according to theCentral Pollution Control Board.

Others like UltraTech, Nirma’sNuvoco, JK Lakshmi and MadrasCement, are among companies whichare burning waste ranging from tyrechips, rubber dust to rice husk andcashew nut shells in their kilnsto generate heat.

At Dalmia Cement’s ResponsibleIndustrialisation initiative, 18.9 tonnes

of plastic waste was collected from res-idential areas, the plant and neigh-bouring villages and used in the kiln tosave a good 56 million kilo calories of energy.

For the country’s largest cementmaker UltraTech, alternative fuels con-tribute three per cent to the total fuelmix. In an investor presentation inFebruary, the company said it is tar-geting 10 per cent contribution fromalternative fuels by the end of the cur-rent financial year.

Cement manufacturers are also wit-nessing a cost benefit from alternativefuels. In its March quarter presenta-tion, UltraTech said increased usageof industrial waste as a fuel has con-tributed to cost savings.

According to an India Brand EquityFoundation report, use of bio energythrough the burning of coffee huskand cashew nut shells at MadrasCement’s Alathiyur plant has led to anannual cost savings of $1.7 million.

Most of the waste collection so far

has been through arrangements withmunicipal authorities. However, com-panies like JK Lakshmi are also exper-imenting to further expand into wastecollection. A rejig of fuel mix is underway for JK Lakhsmi where the compa-ny looks to increase its share of alter-native fuels.

According to sources, it looks to for-malise the supply of waste materialsthrough community collection, includ-ing plastics, to be used as fuel in itskilns.

Companies like Shree Cements havealso extended the fuel mix to sourceslike automobile sludge, waste waterwith high ammonia levels as well asmedical waste. “Alternative fuel nowcontributes four to five per cent to ourtotal fuel mix,” said HM Bangur, man-aging director of Shree Cements.

Anumita Roy Chowdhury, executivedirector at Centre for Science andEnvironment or CSE, said, “To ensuresuch processes do not cause environ-mental hazards, there is a need for strin-gent monitoring of stack and processemissions as well as profiling of emis-sions.”

She added, “Cement companies willhave to invest in effective emission con-trol systems to stay within the permis-sible limit and reduce toxic emissions.Adequacy of emission standards willhave to be reviewed from time to time.”

Industry sources said that emissionsare kept under control through an ide-al mix of raw materials and other pol-lution controlling equipment.

Plastic, coffee husk and medical waste make it to the kilns

Axis Bank toraise ~18k crPrivate sector lender AxisBank said on Saturday that itsboard has approved raisingup to ~18,000 crore throughan issue of equity shares,depository receipts or con-vertible securities. The Boardapproved a proposal in thisregard in the meeting held onSaturday, the bank said in aregulatory filing.

"The Board... hasapproved raising of fundsaggregating up to ~18,000crore," Axis Bank said in theregulatory filing.

The bank is one of theworst-affected private lendersafter the Reserve Bank's assetquality review, which led to ahuge increase in bad loansover past three years. Thebank's provisioning for badloans reduced to ~ 2,711 crorein the fourth quarter of 2018-19, from ~7,179 crore in the cor-responding period last fiscal,according to regulatory fil-ings. The fund will be raisedsubject to shareholder'sapproval to the fund raisingproposal through postal bal-lot process.

Pratap Bhanu Mehta hasquit as vice-chancellor ofSonepat-based AshokaUniversity, one of India’smost prestigious privateuniversities.

Chancellor RudrangshuMukherjee has acceptedhis resignation with effectfrom August 1. ProfessorMalabika Sarkar will suc-ceed Mehta. He, however,will continue to teach at theuniversity.

In a letter to rest of thefaculty, Mehta said the“timing” of his steppingdown as VC “may occasionspeculation”, but describedit as a personal decision. Hesaid his “decision to stepdown was not an easy one”.Mehta said he “hadincreasingly begun to feelthe tension” between hisvocation as an academicand obligations as anadministrator.

“The contemporaryworld has unsettled somany of our political andphilosophical assump-tions, and I increasinglyfelt the need to reorientmyself academically.Hence, the decision to stepdown,” he said.
