Ensure that files that changed during backup process are copied corectly

� You can back up various types of media

� You must have appropriate permissions and user rights




Types of Backup

� Backup types defines what data is backed up� Backup types use archive attributes that show the file

has changed since the last backup

� When a file is modified, the archive attribute is set,

and when you back up the file, the archive attribute is

cleared or reset.

Automated System Recovery

� A recovery option in the Backup utility that containstwo parts: ASR backup and asr restore

� Can back up the operating system

� Does not include data files

� Creates a floppy dis, which contains information

about Backup location data

Disk configurations iincluding basic and dynamic volumes0

How to accomplish a restore procedure

� Choose the all information on this computer option, it

will back up all data including System State Data.




How to Back Up Data

� Back up data files by using the Backup utility� Back up System State data by using the backing

utility

� Back up the operating system and data files by using

the Backup utility

Backing up data files or System state

Procedure� On the Start menu, point to All programs, prompt

Accessories, point to system tools and click backup

� On the welcome page of the Backup or Restore

wizard, click the Advanced Mode link

� In the Backup Utility dialog box, on the Backup tab,

on the Job menu, click New

� Under Click to select the checkbox for any drive,folder or file, click the box net to each file or folder,

click the box next to System state

click Browse

On the welcome page of the Backup or Restore wizard,

this computer, and then click Next





On the Backup Type, Destination, and Name page, click Browse





In the Save As dialog box, in the File name box, type

D:\Complete.bkf and then click save

Scheduled Backup Job

�T

o keep backup files up-to-date without having torember to back them up, you can schedule backup

jobs.

� You can schedule a backup job in two ways

-- When you create a new backup job in Backup-- By using the Scheduled Jobs tab in Bacup to

schedule an exisiting backup job.




Scheduled Backup Options

Scheduled Options Executes the Job

Once Once, at a specific time on a specific date

Daily At the specified time each day

Weekly At the specified time each day of the specifieddays of the week

Monthly At the specified time once a month

At system startup The next time the system is started

At Logon The next time the job owner logs onWhen idle When the system has been idle for a specified

number of minutes





Procedure

� Open Backup, and then on the welcome page of theBackup or Rstore wizard, click the Avanced Modelink

� In theB

ackup tab,on the Job menu, click new

� Under Click to select the check box for any drive,folder or file that you want to back up, click the boxnext to each file and folders that you want to backup.

� On theJob menu, click Save Selections to save your selections as a backup job file

� Click start Backup, make any change you want in theBackup Job information dialog box and then click Schedule.

� In the Set Account Information dialog box, enter theusername and password that you want the scheduled backup to run under.

then on the Schedule data ta, click Properties to set the

date, time and frequency parameters for the scheduled

backup

Procedure

� Open Notepad.

� Type the following command:

ntbackup backup ³C:´/j ³Command line backup 1´ /f ³d:\full.bkf´

� Save the file as backup.bat

� Close Notepad

� Open a command promt, and then type the following

commandsat 18:00/every:M,T,W,TH,F backup.bat(This command causes drive C to ne backed up to D:\full.bkf on the server at

6.00 P.M every Monday through Friday)





Open Notepad.





Type the following command:

ntbackup backup ³C:´/j ³Command line backup 1´ /f ³d:\full.bkf´





Save the file as backup.bat

Restoring Data

� Backup Restore Feature

Restore FAT or NTFS files

� ASR Restore Reads the disk configurations from the floppy disk

Restores the entire disk signatures, volume and partitions on

the disks required to boot up at a minimum

Installs a simple installation of Windows Starts to restore from backup

� Open Backup, and then on the welcome page of theBackup or Restore Wizard, click the Advanced Modelink.

� In the Backup Utility-[untilted] window, click theRestore and Manage Media tab.

� In the left pane, expand File, expand the desiredmedia item, and then select the check box for theitems to be restored.

� In the Restore files to box:

Orginal location, Alternate location, Single location

Recover a Server Failure using ASR





Procedure

� Insert the orginal installation compat dis for theoperating system into your CD-ROM drive

� Restart your computer. If prompted to press a key tostart the computer from the compact disc, press the

appropriate key.� If you have a separate driver file a described in step 1,

use the driver as part of Setup by pressing F6 when prompted

� At the beginning of the text-only mode section of setup, press F2 when prompted (You are prompted toinsert the ASR floppy disk that you previously created).






� Follow the directions on the screen

� If you have a separate driver file as described in

step1, press F6 a secound time when prompted after

the system restarts

� Follow the directions on the screen.

Recover a Server Failure using ASR Restart your computer. If prompted to press a key to start

the computer from the compact disc, press the appropriatekey

� Select the volume where you want to enable Shadowcopies of shared folders, click Enable, and then click

Yes when prompted to enable shadow copies
