Cable levels field for small biz
Many new customers are already tapping into a newly installed high-powered Internet cable in the Albemarle.
Microelectronics Center of North Carolina finished work four monthsago on a fiber optic cable to offer better computer access to schools,colleges and nonprofit hospitals.
Local schools have eight times the bandwidth they had five years ago,but are not paying any more for it, thanks to the federally and state-funded project, said Joe Freddoso, MCNC president and CEO.
The school districts in Dare, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank, Edenton-Chowan and Currituck, along with Elizabeth City State University andCollege of The Albemarle are already connected to the MCNC cableline.
Camden and Perquimans school districts are expected to upgrade theirconnections as soon as they need to.
The cable was built with enough capacity for businesses to connect,too.
Freddoso said about a fourth of the fiber available for private purchasehas already been bought.
“I am pleasantly surprised at the demand we have gotten in thenortheast,” said Freddoso.
The $144 million MCNC project was designed to expand computercapabilities to schools across the region and the state. About 1,200miles of cable were added to the existing North Carolina Research andEducation Network during phase II of the project that included the
Albemarle area.
Only MCNC’s target customers — schools, hospitals, colleges anduniversities — were eligible to tap directly into the MCNC cable.
Other customers most likely will go through a middleman that paysMCNC for access to its broadband cable. The companies buying fiberare responsible for providing the connections to their residential andbusiness customers.
Three wholesalers have now purchased fiber that makes bandwidthavailable to service providers in northeastern North Carolina that waspreviously unavailable, said Freddoso.
One Chowan County businessman is now buying bandwidth from oneof those wholesalers.
Mark Montgomery with Net-Change in Edenton said buying bandwidthfrom Shelby-based RST Global Communications will mean “hugesavings” for his company.
Net-Change, which offers wireless, high-speed Internet service to about400 rural customers, is now getting 10 times the bandwidth at a thirdthe cost his company previously paid, said Montgomery.
Another local entrepreneur, Stephen Lane with InteliPort in PerquimansCounty, actually bought fiber rather than buying it from a wholesaler.He plans to expand his company’s services in the Albemarle area.
Lane said small businesses were previously edged out by the region’spowerful Internet providers, but the new cable will offer newopportunities.
“(The MCNC cable) completely changed the playing field. It leveled it,”said Lane.

As the system grows, adding more capacity should not be difficult,Freddoso said. The cable can be easily upgraded with routers andswitches to expand.
“We could potentially take on a lot more customers than we havetoday,” he said.
Freddoso said he expects that demand will build quickly in comingyears.
Demand for more bandwidth in schools grows by about 50 percenteach year, Freddoso noted. With North Carolina’s online testing andnew emphasis on relying less on textbooks and more on online service,the demand will only increase more, he predicted.

Cable levels field for small biz

RALEIGH, N.C. — Former North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue returned briefly Wednesday to the
public stage after a year away by announcing her initiative to expand the scope and value of
electronic technology for teaching students of all ages.
Perdue, the founder and chairwoman of DigiLEARN, or the Digital Learning Institute, envisions the
effort as bringing together teachers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and students to develop the
most effective online or portable learning tools. The idea, Perdue said, is to determine how
technology can best be used, then encourage companies or software engineers develop it for use
in all classrooms.
DigiLEARN "will help build a pathway so that we can scale digital learning all over the world,"
Perdue said at a news conference as the institute held a strategic planning meeting on the North
Caroilna State University campus. Such digital innovation also can lead to job creation, she added.
Perdue, a Democrat from New Bern, was elected North Carolina's first female governor in 2008
and left office in January 2013 after choosing not to seek re-election. Since then, Perdue has
spent time on the campuses of Harvard and Duke universities and started a consulting firm.
Now the ex-governor says she'll give a lot of time to the institute, which is getting off the ground
thanks to $450,000 in grants from the Carnegie Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation. The next steps are to flesh out the nonprofit foundation's work and raise additional
funds.
"This is a primary job for me because I want to see it succeed," Perdue said.
Now age 67 and out of elected office for the first time in more than 25 years, Perdue has chosen
to remain on the political sidelines as Republicans have run state government since she left the
Executive Mansion. Fellow Democrats have complained GOP Gov. Pat McCrory and the legislature
are reversing course on education.
Save for praising words from McCrory this week on teacher pay increases, Perdue didn't want to
comment on the past year in state government, saying it was a day to talk about digital learning.
"I politely decline," she said. Perdue said McCrory and legislative leaders have spoken out in
support of digital learning efforts.
Perdue, a former public school teacher herself, was involved in digital learning expansion while
governor and previously lieutenant governor. She helped in the creation of the North Carolina
Virtual Public School, where tens of thousands of students take classes online, and promoted the
use of hand-held devices for teachers to assess students.
Perdue held the news conference with vice chairman and former Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer. He
talked about how the Western Governors University — an online, accredited college founded by
19 governors and which he is a founder and current trustee board chairman — is a great example
of how technology transforms education. Students work at their own pace and can be assessed for
learning skills and concepts on a routine basis, not just at midterms and exam time.
Young learners are engaged by technology found in smartphones and tablets, Geringer said.
"If you can make that work in a classroom you've got the opportunity for 'discovery learning' that
every child gets very excited about," he said.
The DigiLEARN board includes, among others, former West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise, former
National Education Association executive director John Wilson and the CEOs of the Research
Triangle Foundation and broadband infrastructure provider MCNC. Wednesday's scheduled
speakers included former Gov. Jim Hunt and venture capital company founder Michael Moe.

DigiLEARN to Accelerate Digital Learning and
Education Innovation

Today marks the official launch of the Digital Learning Institute known as DigiLEARN. The non-profit
organization was founded and will be chaired by former North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue, with former
Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer serving as vice chair. DigiLEARN will be dedicated to accelerating digital
learning for all ages with a goal of increasing personal learning options for students and expanding
instructional opportunities for teachers and instructors. In addition, DigiLEARN will focus on
cultivating an innovative economy for education technology start-ups and entrepreneurs with
accountability for improved learning results. The DigiLEARN Board will begin this week by hosting a
collaborative strategic planning conference with educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and
technology experts.
"The digital world is bringing us profound and rapid changes and it is revolutionizing education and the
way we live," said Gov. Perdue. "Technology can power each education, so it's imperative that we give
every child and adult across the nation access to cutting edge technology tools that can raise the
quality of education. To do that we must support a climate where education innovation thrives and new
ideas for learning can be tested."
Perdue is the former Governor and Lt. Governor of North Carolina and led many education technology
initiatives including the creation of the North Carolina Virtual Public School, improving K-3 diagnostic
assessments using real-time technology tools, and the state's successful public-private partnership with
MCNC to provide schools, community colleges, and universities with affordable broadband
connectivity that scales to speeds up to 10 Gbps. This broadband collaboration is seen as a national
model because North Carolina school districts now collectively use six times the bandwidth while
expending essentially the same costs they did more than five years ago. In addition she led a number of
economic initiatives in North Carolina to improve the business climate for innovators and
entrepreneurs, including access to needed capital.
Gov. Geringer led the State of Wyoming from 1995-2003 and was focused on improving education
through standards, accountability and technology. He is currently one of the founders and chair of the
Board of Trustees for Western Governors University, a non-profit online university founded and
supported by 19 U.S. governors that certifies competency based education. Geringer is a past chairman
of the Education Commission of the States, and he served on John Glenn's National Commission on
Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century. He currently serves as the director of policy
and public sector strategy of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
"Technology is an enabler for access to education," said Gov. Geringer. "The more opportunities we give
students for individualized learning the greater the chances we have of increasing our educational
outcomes and preparing them for a technology-driven world. DigiLEARN will focus on engaging kids
through timely innovations that they can use both in and out of the classroom. Teachers will be a key
part of that focus."

DigiLEARN to Accelerate Digital Learning and
Education Innovation

Today marks the official launch of the Digital Learning Institute known as DigiLEARN. The non-profit
organization was founded and will be chaired by former North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue, with former
Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer serving as vice chair. DigiLEARN will be dedicated to accelerating digital
learning for all ages with a goal of increasing personal learning options for students and expanding
instructional opportunities for teachers and instructors. In addition, DigiLEARN will focus on
cultivating an innovative economy for education technology start-ups and entrepreneurs with
accountability for improved learning results. The DigiLEARN Board will begin this week by hosting a
collaborative strategic planning conference with educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and
technology experts.
"The digital world is bringing us profound and rapid changes and it is revolutionizing education and
the way we live," said Gov. Perdue. "Technology can power each education, so it's imperative that we
give every child and adult across the nation access to cutting edge technology tools that can raise the
quality of education. To do that we must support a climate where education innovation thrives and
new ideas for learning can be tested."
Perdue is the former Governor and Lt. Governor of North Carolina and led many education
technology initiatives including the creation of the North Carolina Virtual Public School, improving K-
3 diagnostic assessments using real-time technology tools, and the state's successful public-private
partnership with MCNC to provide schools, community colleges, and universities with affordable
broadband connectivity that scales to speeds up to 10 Gbps. This broadband collaboration is seen as a
national model because North Carolina school districts now collectively use six times the bandwidth
while expending essentially the same costs they did more than five years ago. In addition she led a
number of economic initiatives in North Carolina to improve the business climate for innovators and
entrepreneurs, including access to needed capital.

through standards, accountability and technology. He is currently one of the founders and chair of the

DigiLEARN to Accelerate Digital Learning and
Education Innovation

Today marks the official launch of the Digital Learning Institute known as DigiLEARN. The non-profit
organization was founded and will be chaired by former North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue, with former
Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer serving as vice chair. DigiLEARN will be dedicated to accelerating digital
learning for all ages with a goal of increasing personal learning options for students and expanding
instructional opportunities for teachers and instructors. In addition, DigiLEARN will focus on
cultivating an innovative economy for education technology start-ups and entrepreneurs with
accountability for improved learning results. The DigiLEARN Board will begin this week by hosting a
collaborative strategic planning conference with educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and
technology experts.
"The digital world is bringing us profound and rapid changes and it is revolutionizing education and
the way we live," said Gov. Perdue. "Technology can power each education, so it's imperative that we
give every child and adult across the nation access to cutting edge technology tools that can raise the
quality of education. To do that we must support a climate where education innovation thrives and
new ideas for learning can be tested."
Perdue is the former Governor and Lt. Governor of North Carolina and led many education
technology initiatives including the creation of the North Carolina Virtual Public School, improving K-
3 diagnostic assessments using real-time technology tools, and the state's successful public-private
partnership with MCNC to provide schools, community colleges, and universities with affordable
broadband connectivity that scales to speeds up to 10 Gbps. This broadband collaboration is seen as a
national model because North Carolina school districts now collectively use six times the bandwidth
while expending essentially the same costs they did more than five years ago. In addition she led a
number of economic initiatives in North Carolina to improve the business climate for innovators and
entrepreneurs, including access to needed capital.
Gov. Geringer led the State of Wyoming from 1995-2003 and was focused on improving education
through standards, accountability and technology. He is currently one of the founders and chair of the
Board of Trustees for Western Governors University, a non-profit online university founded and
supported by 19 U.S. governors that certifies competency based education. Geringer is a past
chairman of the Education Commission of the States, and he served on John Glenn's National
Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century. He currently serves as the
director of policy and public sector strategy of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
"Technology is an enabler for access to education," said Gov. Geringer. "The more opportunities we
give students for individualized learning the greater the chances we have of increasing our
educational outcomes and preparing them for a technology-driven world. DigiLEARN will focus on
engaging kids through timely innovations that they can use both in and out of the classroom. Teachers
will be a key part of that focus."
DigiLEARN has received national support through initial planning grants. In addition to Geringer,
Perdue will be joined on the DigiLEARN Board of Directors by one other former governor and
nationally-recognized education, entrepreneurship and technology leaders. Bios can be seen at

DigiLEARN "will help build a pathway so that we can scale digital learning all over the world,"Perdue said at a news conference as the institute held a strategic planning meeting on the NorthCarolina State University campus. Such digital innovation also can lead to job creation, she added.
Perdue, a Democrat from New Bern, was elected North Carolina's first female governor in 2008and left office in January 2013 after choosing not to seek re-election. Since then, Perdue has spenttime on the campuses of Harvard and Duke universities and started a consulting firm.
Now the ex-governor says she'll give a lot of time to the institute, which is getting off the groundthanks to $450,000 in grants from the Carnegie Foundation and the Bill and Melinda GatesFoundation. The next steps are to flesh out the nonprofit foundation's work and raise additionalfunds.
"This is a primary job for me because I want to see it succeed," Perdue said.
Now age 67 and out of elected office for the first time in more than 25 years, Perdue has chosen toremain on the political sidelines as Republicans have run state government since she left theExecutive Mansion. Fellow Democrats have complained GOP Gov. Pat McCrory and the legislatureare reversing course on education.
Save for praising words from McCrory this week on teacher pay increases, Perdue didn't want tocomment on the past year in state government, saying it was a day to talk about digital learning.
Perdue said McCrory and legislative leaders have spoken out in support of digital learning efforts.
Perdue, a former public school teacher herself, was involved in digital learning expansion whilegovernor and previously lieutenant governor. She helped in the creation of the North CarolinaVirtual Public School, where tens of thousands of students take classes online, and promoted theuse of hand-held devices for teachers to assess students.

Perdue, a Democrat from New Bern, was elected North Carolina's first female governor in 2008 and left office in January 2013 after choosing not to seek re-election. Since then, Perdue has spent time on the campuses of Harvard and
Duke universities and started a consulting firm.
Now the ex-governor says she'll give a lot of time to the institute, which is getting off the ground thanks to $450,000 in grants from the Carnegie Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The next steps are to flesh out the nonprofit
foundation's work and raise additional funds.
"This is a primary job for me because I want to see it succeed," Perdue said.
Now age 67 and out of elected office for the first time in more than 25 years, Perdue has chosen to remain on the political sidelines as Republicans have run state government since she left the Executive Mansion. Fellow Democrats have complained GOP Gov. Pat McCrory and the legislature are reversing course on
education.
Save for praising words from McCrory this week on teacher pay increases, Perdue didn't want to comment on the past year in state government, saying it
was a day to talk about digital learning.
"I politely decline," she said. Perdue said McCrory and legislative leaders have spoken out in support of digital learning efforts.
Perdue, a former public school teacher herself, was involved in digital learning expansion while governor and previously lieutenant governor. She helped in the creation of the North Carolina Virtual Public School, where tens of thousands of
students take classes online, and promoted the use of hand-held devices for teachers to assess students.
Perdue held the news conference with vice chairman and former Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer. He talked about how the Western Governors University - an online, accredited college founded by 19 governors and which he is a founder and current
trustee board chairman - is a great example of how technology transforms education. Students work at their own pace and can be assessed for learning skills and concepts on a routine basis, not just at midterms and exam time.
Young learners are engaged by technology found in smartphones and tablets, Geringer said.
"If you can make that work in a classroom you've got the opportunity for 'discovery learning' that every child gets very excited about," he said.
The DigiLEARN board includes, among others, former West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise, former National Education Association executive director John Wilson and
the CEOs of the Research Triangle Foundation and broadband infrastructure provider MCNC. Wednesday's scheduled speakers included former Gov. Jim Hunt
and venture capital company founder Michael Moe.

RALEIGH, N.C. " Former North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue returned briefly Wednesday to thepublic stage after a year away by announcing her initiative to expand the scope and value ofelectronic technology for teaching students of all ages.
Perdue, the founder and chairwoman of DigiLEARN, or the Digital Learning Institute, envisions theeffort as bringing together teachers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and students to develop the mosteffective online or portable learning tools. The idea, Perdue said, is to determine how technologycan best be used, then encourage companies or software engineers develop it for use in allclassrooms.
DigiLEARN will help build a pathway so that we can scale digital learning all over the world, Perduesaid at a news conference as the institute held a strategic planning meeting on the North CaroilnaState University campus. Such digital innovation also can lead to job creation, she added.

Today marks the official launch of the Digital Learning Institute known as DigiLEARN. The non-profit
organization was founded and will be chaired by former North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue, with former
Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer serving as vice chair. DigiLEARN will be dedicated to accelerating digital
learning for all ages with a goal of increasing personal learning options for students and expanding
instructional opportunities for teachers and instructors. In addition, DigiLEARN will focus on
cultivating an innovative economy for education technology start-ups and entrepreneurs with
accountability for improved learning results. The DigiLEARN Board will begin this week by hosting a
collaborative strategic planning conference with educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and
technology experts.
"The digital world is bringing us profound and rapid changes and it is revolutionizing education and
the way we live," said Gov. Perdue. "Technology can power each education, so it's imperative that we
give every child and adult across the nation access to cutting edge technology tools that can raise the
quality of education. To do that we must support a climate where education innovation thrives and
new ideas for learning can be tested."
Perdue is the former Governor and Lt. Governor of North Carolina and led many education
technology initiatives including the creation of the North Carolina Virtual Public School, improving K-
3 diagnostic assessments using real-time technology tools, and the state's successful public-private
partnership with MCNC to provide schools, community colleges, and universities with affordable
broadband connectivity that scales to speeds up to 10 Gbps. This broadband collaboration is seen as a
national model because North Carolina school districts now collectively use six times the bandwidth
while expending essentially the same costs they did more than five years ago. In addition she led a
number of economic initiatives in North Carolina to improve the business climate for innovators and
entrepreneurs, including access to needed capital.
Gov. Geringer led the State of Wyoming from 1995-2003 and was focused on improving education
through standards, accountability and technology. He is currently one of the founders and chair of the
Board of Trustees for Western Governors University, a non-profit online university founded and
supported by 19 U.S. governors that certifies competency based education. Geringer is a past
chairman of the Education Commission of the States, and he served on John Glenn's National
Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century. He currently serves as the
director of policy and public sector strategy of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
"Technology is an enabler for access to education," said Gov. Geringer. "The more opportunities we
give students for individualized learning the greater the chances we have of increasing our
educational outcomes and preparing them for a technology-driven world. DigiLEARN will focus on
engaging kids through timely innovations that they can use both in and out of the classroom. Teachers
will be a key part of that focus."
DigiLEARN has received national support through initial planning grants. In addition to Geringer,
Perdue will be joined on the DigiLEARN Board of Directors by one other former governor and

DigiLEARN to Accelerate Digital Learning and Education Innovation

Today marks the official launch of the Digital Learning Institute known as DigiLEARN. The non-profit organization was founded and will be chaired by former
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue, with former Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer serving as vice chair. DigiLEARN will be dedicated to accelerating digital learning for
all ages with a goal of increasing personal learning options for students and expanding instructional opportunities for teachers and instructors. In addition,
DigiLEARN will focus on cultivating an innovative economy for education technology start-ups and entrepreneurs with accountability for improved learning
results. The DigiLEARN Board will begin this week by hosting a collaborative strategic planning conference with educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and
technology experts.
"The digital world is bringing us profound and rapid changes and it is revolutionizing education and the way we live," said Gov. Perdue. "Technology can power
each education, so it's imperative that we give every child and adult across the nation access to cutting edge technology tools that can raise the quality of
education. To do that we must support a climate where education innovation thrives and new ideas for learning can be tested."
Perdue is the former Governor and Lt. Governor of North Carolina and led many education technology initiatives including the creation of the North Carolina
Virtual Public School, improving K-3 diagnostic assessments using real-time technology tools, and the state's successful public-private partnership with MCNC
to provide schools, community colleges, and universities with affordable broadband connectivity that scales to speeds up to 10 Gbps. This broadband
collaboration is seen as a national model because North Carolina school districts now collectively use six times the bandwidth while expending essentially the
same costs they did more than five years ago. In addition she led a number of economic initiatives in North Carolina to improve the business climate for
innovators and entrepreneurs, including access to needed capital.
Gov. Geringer led the State of Wyoming from 1995-2003 and was focused on improving education through standards, accountability and technology. He is
currently one of the founders and chair of the Board of Trustees for Western Governors University, a non-profit online university founded and supported by 19
U.S. governors that certifies competency based education. Geringer is a past chairman of the Education Commission of the States, and he served on John Glenn's
National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century. He currently serves as the director of policy and public sector strategy of
Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
"Technology is an enabler for access to education," said Gov. Geringer. "The more opportunities we give students for individualized learning the greater the
chances we have of increasing our educational outcomes and preparing them for a technology-driven world. DigiLEARN will focus on engaging kids through
timely innovations that they can use both in and out of the classroom. Teachers will be a key part of that focus."

DigiLEARN to Accelerate Digital Learning and
Education Innovation

Today marks the official launch of the Digital Learning Institute known as DigiLEARN. The non-profit
organization was founded and will be chaired by former North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue, with former
Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer serving as vice chair. DigiLEARN will be dedicated to accelerating digital
learning for all ages with a goal of increasing personal learning options for students and expanding
instructional opportunities for teachers and instructors. In addition, DigiLEARN will focus on cultivating
an innovative economy for education technology start-ups and entrepreneurs with accountability for
improved learning results. The DigiLEARN Board will begin this week by hosting a collaborative strategic
planning conference with educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and technology experts.
"The digital world is bringing us profound and rapid changes and it is revolutionizing education and the
way we live," said Gov. Perdue. "Technology can power each education, so it's imperative that we give
every child and adult across the nation access to cutting edge technology tools that can raise the quality
of education. To do that we must support a climate where education innovation thrives and new ideas for
learning can be tested."
Perdue is the former Governor and Lt. Governor of North Carolina and led many education technology
initiatives including the creation of the North Carolina Virtual Public School, improving K-3 diagnostic
assessments using real-time technology tools, and the state's successful public-private partnership with
MCNC to provide schools, community colleges, and universities with affordable broadband connectivity
that scales to speeds up to 10 Gbps. This broadband collaboration is seen as a national model because
North Carolina school districts now collectively use six times the bandwidth while expending essentially
the same costs they did more than five years ago. In addition she led a number of economic initiatives in
North Carolina to improve the business climate for innovators and entrepreneurs, including access to
needed capital.
Gov. Geringer led the State of Wyoming from 1995-2003 and was focused on improving education
through standards, accountability and technology. He is currently one of the founders and chair of the
Board of Trustees for Western Governors University, a non-profit online university founded and
supported by 19 U.S. governors that certifies competency based education. Geringer is a past chairman
of the Education Commission of the States, and he served on John Glenn's National Commission on
Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century. He currently serves as the director of policy and
public sector strategy of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
"Technology is an enabler for access to education," said Gov. Geringer. "The more opportunities we give
students for individualized learning the greater the chances we have of increasing our educational
outcomes and preparing them for a technology-driven world. DigiLEARN will focus on engaging kids
through timely innovations that they can use both in and out of the classroom. Teachers will be a key part
of that focus."
DigiLEARN has received national support through initial planning grants. In addition to Geringer, Perdue
will be joined on the DigiLEARN Board of Directors by one other former governor and nationally-

RALEIGH " Former N.C. Gov. Beverly Perdue returned briefly Wednesday to the public stage aftera year away by announcing her initiative to expand the scope and value of electronic technology forteaching students of all ages.
Perdue, the founder and chairwoman of DigiLEARN, or the Digital Learning Institute, envisions theeffort as bringing together teachers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and students to develop the mosteffective online or portable learning tools. The idea, Perdue said, is to determine how technologycan best be used, then encourage companies or software engineers develop it for use in allclassrooms.
DigiLEARN "will help build a pathway so that we can scale digital learning all over the world,"Perdue said at a news conference as the institute held a strategic planning meeting on the NorthCaroilna State University campus. Such digital innovation also can lead to job creation, she added.
Perdue, a Democrat from New Bern, was elected North Carolina's first female governor in 2008and left office in January 2013 after choosing not to seek re-election. Since then, Perdue has spenttime on the campuses of Harvard and Duke universities and started a consulting firm.
Now the ex-governor says she'll give a lot of time to the institute, which is getting off the groundthanks to $450,000 in grants from the Carnegie Foundation and the Bill and Melinda GatesFoundation. The next steps are to flesh out the nonprofit foundation's work and raise additionalfunds.
"This is a primary job for me because I want to see it succeed," Perdue said.
Now age 67 and out of elected office for the first time in more than 25 years, Perdue has chosen toremain on the political sidelines as Republicans have run state government since she left theExecutive Mansion. Fellow Democrats have complained GOP Gov. Pat McCrory and the legislatureare reversing course on education.
Save for praising words from McCrory this week on teacher pay increases, Perdue didn't want tocomment on the past year in state government, saying it was a day to talk about digital learning.
"I politely decline," she said. Perdue said McCrory and legislative leaders have spoken out insupport of digital learning efforts.
Perdue, a former public school teacher herself, was involved in digital learning expansion whilegovernor and previously lieutenant governor. She helped in the creation of the North CarolinaVirtual Public School, where tens of thousands of students take classes online, and promoted theuse of hand-held devices for teachers to assess students.
Perdue held the news conference with vice chairman and former Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer. Hetalked about how the Western Governors University " an online, accredited college founded by 19governors and which he is a founder and current trustee board chairman " is a great example of

how technology transforms education. Students work at their own pace and can be assessed forlearning skills and concepts on a routine basis, not just at midterms and exam time.
Young learners are engaged by technology found in smartphones and tablets, Geringer said.
"If you can make that work in a classroom you've got the opportunity for 'discovery learning' thatevery child gets very excited about," he said.
The DigiLEARN board includes, among others, former West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise, formerNational Education Association executive director John Wilson and the CEOs of the ResearchTriangle Foundation and broadband infrastructure provider MCNC. Wednesday's scheduledspeakers included former Gov. Jim Hunt and venture capital company founder Michael Moe.
