Volume 3, Issue 7 | Holiday 2013

editor’s note

During the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season, McMurray Girls all over are

facing all of the same questions. Which gifts to buy them? What to wear to the holiday

bash? How to decorate? And most of all, how on earth will we check everything off of our list

before December 24th?!

…Then of course, there’s the New Years Eve Dilemma! (Don’t even get me start-ed!) With so much going on in Fort McMurray – and even more if you’re planning to travel – the biggest question we’re all facing is “How to survive the holidays?”

As with most situations, the common answer is when in doubt to ask a girlfriend! And that’s just what we’ve done!

With a little help from REAL, savvy McMurray Girls, in this issue you’ll find pages full of holiday inspiration with a little help and friendly advice for entertaining, setting a festive tablescape… and even a fashion lookbook from Yvonne Lauren boutique with gorgeous go-to looks for every event on your holiday calendar! Shopping woes? We’ve got gifts galore with buyers guides from local retailers with all of the hottest gifts of 2013… for every lucky person on YOUR list!

Amidst all of the ‘questions’ you’ll face this holiday season, take note of this one important ‘answer’. After all of the shopping, wrapping, baking and decorating is done – the most important answer to filling your season with the true spirit of the holidays comes in finding a way to help someone in need. I want to congratulate all of the women who took part in the SPOTLIGHT event earlier this Fall. Through the fundraising efforts at our women’s event, we collectively raised over twelve thousand dollars for The Friends of the Fort McMurray Fire Fighter’s Charitable

Fund – which will benefit 6 local charities this year.

Happy Holidays, McMurray Girl! However you choose to celebrate, I wish you joy, fun and togetherness – the best gifts a girl can ask for!

Tell us a bit about the Northern Lights Health Foundation.

The Northern Lights Health Foundation is a non-profit fundraising organization which raises money to meet healthcare needs in our region, as identified by Alberta Health Services including: programs, services and new medical equipment for our hospital. The Foundation holds major fundraising events such as Radiothon, Spring Fling and Festival of Trees.

What is the Festival of Trees?

This year will mark the 24th Festival of Trees! It’s our community’s kick-off to the holiday season. The event started out on a much smaller scale, raising just over $10,000 in its inaugural year at MacDon-ald Island Park. It has grown into a four-day event featuring Santa’s Workshop, Family Fun Night and Skating Party, Ladies Holiday Luncheon, Breakfast with Santa, and new to Festival this year; The Ugly Christmas Sweater Party- at which Signal Hill will perform!

What is your fundraising goal for this year’s Festival of Trees?

It’s always nice to raise more funds than were raised in the previous year. Last year, the Festival of Trees raised $375,000.

What is the most money that a tree ever sold for?

Bearj and Karen from Canadian Jewellers donated a beautiful Swarovski Crystal Christmas Tree in 2006. That tree auctioned for $25,000! The winning bidder then donated the tree back to be re-auctioned, auctioning a second time for $25,000! I can safely say $50,000 for one Christmas Tree is the Festival of Trees record to break!

MY STORYI grew up in a very close-knit family in Cape Breton and took my undergraduate degree in St. John’s at Memorial University before going on to complete a Public Relations graduate program at Seneca College in Toronto. After moving back to Nova Scotia and spend-ing a couple of years in Halifax, I took on a contract with the City of Toronto through a marketing agency. I had planned to move back to Toronto permanently, but after three months living on the corner of Bloor and Spadina downtown, I quickly realized Toronto was not where I wanted to plant my roots. It was at that time, after being convinced by a friend over the phone, that I found myself in Fort McMurray.

After a month living in Fort McMurray I met the lovely Linda Macdonald, co-owner of the Fort McMurray Boston Pizzas. She informed me she was looking for a PR professional. I worked with Boston Pizza as the Community Relations Coordinator for just over two years before accepting my current role with the Northern Lights Health Foundation. My role with Boston Pizza gave me the opportunity to work with non-profit organizations frequently as many fundraisers and patio parties hosted at Boston Pizza are held in support of local charities. As a result of introductions made through my role with Boston Pizza, I became an active volunteer as a member of the Run for the Cure Committee, 2015 Western Canada Summer Games Media Committee and Director on the Big Brothers Big Sisters Board of Directors.

Through my various volunteer roles and professional positions, including a part-time Recreational Program-mer with the RMWB, I’ve acquired a large network of amazing contacts from every industry here in Fort McMurray. The cherry on top was meeting the love of my life last year, here in Fort McMurray. My mother pointed out the irony that I moved all the way to Fort McMurray, only to fall in love with a guy from Nova Scotia! I’m definitely feeling the “Happily Ever After Ef-fect” of my choices leading up to where I am now in my home-life and career.

Tell us about some of the tree themes that have been entered this year.

I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say companies, organizations and teams putting trees in this year appear to be stepping it up a notch!

Tree theme sneak peek: Race Away from Winter, 50 Shades of Grey, and Ice, Ice Baby!

How can someone get involved?

There are numerous ways to become involved with the Festival of Trees:

Sponsor: Sponsorship opportunities are still available! The Sponsorship Package can be found online at www.NLHF.ca.

Donate: In-kind donation items are needed for silent auction and raffle prizes. This is a great opportunity to promote your business as over 12,000 guests are expected to visit the Festival of Trees! See the Sponsorship Package for in-kind levels of recognition at www.NLHF.ca.

Volunteer: We are in need of 300+ volunteers from November 13th -18th. Various shifts and roles are available. For more information, or if you’re interested in volunteering, please email the Volunteer Coordinator: [email protected]

Attend Festival of Trees: Aside from spending time and having fun with your loved ones, your dollars spent at the Festival of Trees, whether on event tickets, silent auction, or raffle ticket purchases, support the Health Founda-tion’s efforts to make improvements to local healthcare.

my gift giving tips:Making your list and checking it twice –

Something personalized is always a winner. Last year I purchased personalized M&M’s online and they were a huge hit! A trip or tickets to see a concert is a great gift as it’s something to look forward to when the holidays are over.

When in doubt, ask around, maybe someone you know already bought the perfect gift for who you’re shopping for and you can pitch in on it!

3 wardrobe must-havesfor a party-perfect holiday look

Black pantyhose are classy and flattering - remember to always pack a back-up pair!

Dark red nail polish is festive, sexy and can make any woman feel like a vixen.

Purse or clutch appropriate to your outfit - nothing looks worse than when women get dressed up for a night out and then carry their big, old, everyday purse around all night!

how to be a gracious guestover the holidays

DO bring an appetizer and/or bottle of wine

DON'T wear your shoes inside of the house

Tis the season for entertaining, and McMurray Girls throughout the region are planning their festive feasts! Epicure Selections Independent Consultant and home entertaining aficionado – Denise Hildebrand shares her personal secrets for stylish tablescapes. Whether your personal decorating style is cozy and rustic, glamorous and sparkly – or you prefer to stick to tra-ditional red and green… these tabletop tips and tricks will set the scene for an unforgettable soirée.

Denise: Having a few key pieces makes changing your place setting a bit easier on your budget. I recommend a good set of white plates and charger plates – gold is always in style for Christmas. Glasses – I love glasses! You can never have too many glasses on hand. You’ll also want a good set of cutlery, and cloth napkins. Start with these items and build from there.

Look around the house – you’d be surprised what you can find to make a festive centrepiece for Christmas, or any time of year.

Serve a decadent dinner that’s a step beyond tradition. I love this glamorous theme for an intimate setting – very classic romantic.

Add new sparkle to some old favourites. The ornament on the plate and the Large Ornament standing were purchased at The Final Touch. The napkin ring and individual cake stand with dome are from Pottery Barn. The silver cake stand is from Homesense, and the napkin and placemat are from the bay. Everything else you see has been collected over the years.

The Glamorous Setting holiday luxury

holiday 2013 | mcmurraygirl.com 23

Start a collection. The nutcrackers were purchased years ago. Our youngest son Mason loved Nutcrackers, and so began the collection! Each year, each of our three children receives an ornament for the tree – with the idea that when they move out on their own, they will have enough ornaments to at least decorate their first Christmas Tree.

The ornaments scattered between the nutcrackers can be any size – and whatever colours you’d like to be the focus of your table. I chose gold, silver, green & red – traditional Christmas colours.

easy gingerbread bars

What’s tradition without a family memento? The table runner and place mats were hand made by my Mother – she loves to quilt. Lucky for me, I have been given some beautiful quilted items for Christ-mas from quilts to wall hangings… the runner and placemats are out on my dining room table from the middle of November until the end of December.

My family’s favorite Christmas Cookie is Easy Gingerbread bars. They are delicious, moist chewy bars which can be cut into cookie shapes. This family favourite is a staple on every holiday table. For best results, I always use Epicure Selection’s pure cinnamon, pure ginger and decorating sugar.

1 ¼ cups Sugar 1 ¼ cups Softened Butter 1 Egg 3 tbsp Molasses 3 cups Flour1 tsp Baking Soda 2 tsp Pure Cinnamon*2 tsp Pure Ginger*Pieces finely chopped Crystallized Ginger1 tbsp Decorating Sugar*

Heat oven to 350 F. Combine first four ingredients in large mixer bowl.

Beat at medium speed until creamy.

Add next four ingredients, beat on low speed.

Mix in Crystallized Ginger. Line a large baking sheet with silicone baking mat. Press in mixture until evenly distributed and flattened.

Sprinkle with decorating sugar. Bake for 16 – 20 minutes, or until lightly browned on edges.

Cool completely. Cut into bars or use cookie cutters and cut into shapes. Makes about 48 bars or cookie shapes.

They make the perfect gift to take for a cookie exchange, to give in a tin to your child’s teacher, or to simply sit down and enjoy, yourself!

*I always use Epicure’s.

Bring the outdoors in. Start with a simple vase filled with your favourite green-ery. I always add a few birch branches. The Santa or Father Christmas is from The Bay. I have collected Father Christmas’ for years… I now have so many I that don’t have enough space to put them all out! The wooden ball was picked up last year at Dunvegan Gardens, the other ornaments were found in my orna-ment box. The red tree candle was from Superstore.

Collect as you go. Every year I purchase a few things to add to our holiday décor collection. Whether it fits in with the romantic glamorous, traditional or woodland themes – there always has to be something new!

beauty review:

High qualitylash choice...these get an A+

M·A·C Lashes are handmade in a variety of perfectly shaped designs. These particular lashes are extremely dramatic, though the brand offers a variety of shapes and densities. One of the more expensive brands (at just about $20), you’ll want to care for these lashes in order to get more than just one wear out of them. Make sure to carefully remove any lash glue from the band after use with your fingertips. The quality packaging allows you to store your lashes safely.

Lashes available locally: MUSE Makeup Artistry 780-607-1778

Available at Shoppers Drug Mart, the QUO brand lashes come in a number of varieties. Don’t be shy to clip your lashes - custom-izing the size is crucial! You’ll want to make sure that your lashes are no wider than your natural lash line. Batting lashes that sweep the inner corners of your eyes will cause irritation and tearing which can ruin your entire makeup application! Lashes are always designed to taper in toward the nose. Always trim from the outer corner of the lash (where lashes are longest). New lash users can also try my method of trimming lashes into three, easy-to-apply mini strips.

Flash those lashes and add an element of unmistakable glamour to your holiday party look this season! Editor Kyla Getty scopes out local false lash brands and shares her tested eyelash batting tips ‘n tricks!

beauty reviews on the latestproducts in our makeup kit.

Shown in #505 (human hair) and D/612. I found the 505’s to be a great option for new lash users... easy to apply and wear! The thinner lash band makes application a breeze, allowing the lashes to curve nicely along your eye’s natural shape... (just don’t forget eyeliner!) For advanced lash wearers, the D/612 lashes feature gemstone details - which create a fun sparkle for your holiday look.

Available at Chatters, the Ardell line offers a number of lash products. I tried the individual lashes and Lash-Free remover. Individual lashes allow you to hand-place false lash clusters. For this, you’ll need a good pair of tweezers, a steady hand and a bit of extra time. The final look is natural and very customizable. The LashFree remover for individual lashes helps loosen the glue. No matter what, a nice warm cloth over your lashes works wonders for hassle-free removal.

holiday greetings! The remaining weeks of 2013 are winding down, but there are still many events and activities to close the year out. On November 11, the community gathers solemnly for Remembrance Day to honour the brave men and women who served their country. At the end of November we will bundle up and come together once again for the annual Santa Claus Parade. The parade kicks off plenty of holiday events and activities – so keep your eye out for the upcoming fun!

In all that you do, make safety a priority for you and your family this holiday season. That means everything from driving to the conditions of the road, to practicing fire safety in your home, to identifying

a designated driver if you’re at a holiday party. Let’s keep this season joyful and bright for everyone.

One way we can keep this season joyful and bright is helping out those who are less fortunate. Wood Buffalo is a generous community, so consider volunteering your time with a local service group or collect donations for one of our many charitable organizations.

2014 is just around the corner and that means another busy year ahead. On the heels of October’s general election, it also means a new Council. Municipal staff look forward to fulfilling Council’s mandate and we remain committed to creating a balanced future with opportunity for all. As Council begins its four year term, we are excited to see Wood Buffalo emerge as a global model for sustainable living in the north.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo extends warmest season’s greetings to our residents and best wishes for the new year. We look forward to working for you in 2014!

With the most wonderful time of the year just around the corner, Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is making his annual stop at the Legacy Dodge Santa Claus Parade. This Wood Buffalo tradition rings in the holiday season and lights up the night. At 6:30 p.m. on November 23, 2013 Franklin Avenue will be filled with holiday joy, exciting parade floats and hot chocolate galore.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Lights of Christmas”, to keep the magic of Christmas alive, Events Wood Buffalo would like the help of residents to light up the downtown core. Whether you choose to simply sit back and enjoy the parade or get amongst it with putting a float in- sup-port your community and celebrate the holidays with Fort McMurray.

With the arrival of winter, it’s very important heat sources such as space heaters, furnaces and fireplaces are properly inspected before use. Before turning a heat source on, have it inspected for damages that may have arose over the summer and be sure to clean out any buildup that may have accumulated over the previous winter. Ensure that all heaters have a “safe zone” of at least one meter. Do not place near bedding, curtains, clothing or furniture. Heaters must be placed on a level, non-combustible surface, and be equipped with an automatic cut-off device to shut off power should the heater get knocked over.

Holiday Cooking and Entertaining While it’s a great way to get family and friends together, it is also currently the leading cause of home fires. Residents should always stay in the kitchen while cooking and avoid distrac-tions, as leaving a pan on the stove unattended can quickly lead to a kitchen fire. Residents are reminded to never use water to extinguish a fire on the stove and to always cook with a lid and oven mitt close by, to safely place on the pan if a fire ignites.

Electrical safety Most residents rely on extension cords to plug in their vehicles, Christmas lights or extra sources of heat. Keep in mind that last year’s extension cords may have accumulated damage making then unsafe to use. Always inspect your extension cords, Christmas lights and electrical outlets for fraying or damage before powering them up for the winter!

Jillian’s prevention tips:One thing that I cannot stress enough is to check your smoke alarms! If you do not have a functional smoke alarm in your home, your chance of safely escaping a fire decreases by the second. Ensure that your smoke alarm has not expired. Test monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.

fire preventionIt is important to teach children at a very young age how to safety escape a fire, including two ways out of every room and how to recognize the sound of a smoke alarm. The biggest question a family should ask is “if there was a fire, could my children safely escape without my assistance?” Children instinctively want to hide at the sight of fire, but practicing a home escape plan and reiterating the important of meeting at the muster point when the smoke alarm sounds, increases the chances of a safe escape.

When the cold weather hits and furnaces and fireplaces begin to be used, the chance of carbon monoxide in your home is also increased. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odorless gas that can be very poisonous if left unnoticed. Give your family and/or roommate peace of mind by installing carbon monoxide alarms in your home, and test regularly to ensure it is working effectively.

Being a leader... is about creating a culture where everyone has a significant role to play.

MCMURRAY GIRL SINCE: 2008

BEING A LEADER AT MACDONALD ISLAND PARK: In my role the most important part is listening to the com-munity and identifying our needs with respect to recreation and leisure and then assisting in the process of articulating those needs into vision with our partners.

AFTER HOURS AT MACDONALD ISLAND PARK: In the winter I enjoy spending time on the leisure ice or curling surface, while in the summer I enjoy spend-ing time on the Miskanaw Golf Course.

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT LIFE IN FORT MCMURRAY: Is that even though we are transitioning into a large urban centre, we are still able to maintain that small town, close knit, community feeling.

MCMURRAY GIRL: of 5 years

BEING A LEADER AT MACDONALD ISLAND PARK:It’s about clearing a pathway to allow my staff to make a difference each day.

BEST PART OF THE JOB: Our job is everyone else’s fun! We represent community and quality of life.

AFTER HOURS AT MACDONALD ISLAND PARK: Our 5 year old keeps us going all the time. Swim lessons, dance class, skating, or family brunch at the Fox Den!

ON THE JOB MUST-HAVE? Running shoes of course - in the Sport and Recreation depart-ment, you are always on the go! LOOKING FORWARD TO: THE CRAZE - our annual New Year’s Eve celebration for families, and it’s free! This is one of our best events of the year as it is an opportu-nity to give back to the community and I think it truly speaks to the qual-ity of life that we look to provide to the citizens of Wood Buffalo.

MCMURRAY GIRL SINCE: 2009

BEING A LEADER AT MACDONALD ISLAND PARK: My role provides me the opportunity to find great talent that helps us create the MiTeam experience and hopefully be a source of inspiration and encouragement to future leaders.

AFTER HOURS ACTIVITIES: We bring the kids to the pool, climbing wall, badminton, library and of course our favourite – enjoying the chocolate lava cake at Fox Den Lounge. WORK/LIFE BALANCE: Respect it! There is no perfect work life balance, each has its importance and being able to prioritize helps find that balance.

ON THE JOB MUST-HAVE: A great team and a bowl of candy.

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP AT MACDONALD ISLAND PARKThe strength of a team begins with its leaders and filters down throughout the entire organization. McMurray Girl talks with Rachel Gordon, Jodie Mercier, and Fatima Mirza – three women proud to play leadership roles at the facility.

“Being a leader at MacDonald Island Park is about creating a culture where everyone has a significant role to play. It means leading with transparency, innovation, and accountability”, says Jodie, Sport & Recreation G.M. for the facility, “our COO has built a culture that absolutely everyone makes a difference. We are truly one big team.”

The women share a passion for the community and the people of our unique region. For Fatima Mirza, Director of Human Resources, finding new team members to share in this is exciting. “Success in any organization is driven by its human capital. Having the opportunity to contribute that value to our organization is rewarding; especially when we see team members growing within our company. It’s an incredible opportunity to work along-side some of the finest, most passionate people you have ever worked with.”

For Rachel Gordon, the most rewarding aspect of her role is in the experience of a ground breaking ceremony and then watching the components of a facility as they come to fruition. At every level of the organization, the excitement and anticipation of MacDonald Island’s future is contagious. The exciting next phase of growth includes transitioning into becoming the ‘Regional Recreation Corporation’ and the opening of Shell Place.

If joining the Mi Team is something you might be interested in, Jodie says to be prepared to ‘work hard and be great!’ “Our team comes to the island to contribute each day, make a difference, and set expectations high. With that said, we are all in it together! Take ownership over your role but know we are all working towards the same goals and vision.”

holiday 2013 | mcmurraygirl.com 47

Occasionally succumbing to food cravings and indulging ourselves is generally alright. Unfortunately, many tend to overeat during the holidays, and this is what those pesky extra pounds and inches can be attributed to. Overeating is not the only culprit to blame for holiday weight gain. Physical inactivity tends to be higher during the holidays, as well. Although rest and relaxation are important for anyone – too much of this ‘good thing’ leads to an overall decline in energy, which will leave you feeling slow and sluggish.

Here are 10 tips to keep you happy and healthy this holiday season:Eat in ModerationDuring this time, moderation will be key to help maintaining your weight. You do not need to completely avoid holiday foods… just make sure you have one regular plate full of food rather than a mountain covered in gravy!

Limit the Treats Enjoy a few treats, however set a limit. If you set a number beforehand instead of mindlessly snacking, you can avoid excess calories without feeling deprived.

Drink Plenty of Water & Limit Holiday BeveragesMany people don’t drink enough water during the day and tend to mistake thirst for hunger. Ensuring you get plenty of water well help subside food cravings.

During the holiday season, health and wellness often take a back seat to other festive priorities such as

time with family and friends at parties and celebrations

– which are usually accom-panied by delicious holiday

treats and a few extra drinks. With all of these enticements,

women ask “how on earth can one enjoy herself without gaining any

holiday weight?!”

Plan Fun ActivitiesMost people are less active during the holidays. Family time is time well spent, so try planning a fun activity such as a game of football, some Wii Fit, tubing, ice skating or snow shoeing. When going outside, make sure everyone has appropriate clothing and have a healthy snack afterwards.

Don’t Forget the GymThe holidays can be a hectic time. Keeping up with a gym routine is definitely work, but is always worth the effort. Whether your goal is to lose weight or burn off some stress, make the effort to keep up with your exercise. The only workout you will regret is the one you didn’t do!

Plan Ahead – Never Go to a Party HungryBefore attending a holiday party, have a healthy meal or snack. Make sure you are getting some good protein and fiber to help keep you fuller, longer. That way when you arrive at the party, you won’t be tempted to fill up on goodies.

Keep Yourself Accountable – Say No, PolitelyHosts and hostesses have nothing but good intentions when it comes to their party spread. However it is up to you to choose healthier alternatives and control your portions. Don’t feel forced to eat food because people keep offering it to you. If you politely say no thank you, people will under-stand when your full. Their intention is to keep to happy, not force you to stuff your face.

There’s An App For ThatCheck out one of the free apps available to help you monitor your diet and exercise such as My Fitness Pal. Track calories consumed and burned – monitor the overall quality of the foods you’re eating.

Keep the Scale Handy Don’t avoid the scale, it can be a great reminder or motivational tool. Normally weighing yourself more than once a week is unnecessary, but if it keeps you from putting on holiday weight, keep using it.

Have Fun! Enjoy your holidays, and don’t stress too much! Excess stress leads to increased level of cortisol, which can increase cravings for unhealthy foods. If you’re getting stressed, burn off that negative energy with a jog, a message or a relaxing yoga class.

The holidays are a time for celebrating with friends and family. By sticking with healthy choices and introducing some of these tips into your holiday habits, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle, and choose a different New Year’s resolution, this year!

The Southern Living Big Book of Christmas – Southern Living

Best of Christmas Ideas – Better Homes and Gardens

This is one of my favorite books on Christmas entertaining, of all kinds. The photos are absolute eye-candy,

the recipes never fail (and are easy to do for large crowds), the decorating ideas are wonderful, and it’s all easily explained and not at all hard to pull off. If you love to entertain, or even if you simply must entertain, this is a treasure trove of great ideas for the Holiday season.

Adding a personal touch to Christmas is always welcome, and handmade gifts aren’t only for kids. Giving from the heart

is what it’s all about – and look to BHG for ideas, tips, and techniques to make that giving really shine with your love and personality? This new book from Better Homes and Gardens is absolutely full of great ideas to make the Season bright!

Martha Stewart’s Christmas – by Martha Stewart, with Christopher Baker

You may have heard that Martha Stewart will be at the Fort McMurray Public Library in December. This is one of the

classics of Christmas decorating and entertaining. Martha Stewart is the expert, and this is one of the books that started the “you-can-do-it!” trend of holiday decorating and entertaining. The information here is all about timeless classics and the know-how to do it yourself. Don’t be afraid to celebrate like a pro! (Have we mentioned that Martha Stewart will be at the Fort McMurray Public Library in December?)

Sometimes – even though we’ve planned, even though we’ve gotten

great ideas, even though everything has been heartwarming and jolly and gay… Sometimes, there comes a point during the holiday season when we look at our families and say, “I love you all dearly, but I’m sick to death of you. Please get away from me.” It’s at those times that you need this book. The Stupidest Angel is the third book in the Pine Cove series – it’s a light read, and above all, it’s FUNNY. If you have an appreciation of the absurd and you just need to laugh or else you’ll scream, then this is the book for you!

Family lawyer, Corie Flett advises us of a few things to consider before you ‘dash away’ for your holiday vacation with the kids.

The seasons are changing, the temperature is dropping and we may be preparing for those holiday escapes to warmer destinations or fun-filled holiday festivities across the seas at grandma and grandpa’s.

For many, the trek across the Canadian border may involve travel with children – without the other parent. Even the most diligent of travelers may think they’re prepared, having remembered the passports, birth certificates or health care cards for their children. What few of us realize however, is that without proper documentation you may find yourself being denied to travel with your own children.

What documentation, you might ask? A simple letter signed by the non-accom-panying parent acknowledging and authorizing travel of the children without their presence. There is no legal requirement for this letter, but you will find that customs officials are taking a hard-lined approach on having them to allow one parent to travel with the children, or no parent at all in the instance of travel clubs, grandparents, family friends, aunts, uncles, etc. Further, although there is no legal requirement to have the document commissioned in any special format, it is recommended to have the document notarized by either a notary or lawyer to signify the taking of a legal oath.

If both parents are present, obviously the document isn’t required. However, if one parent isn’t present – even if you’re happily married, together, divorced, separated or have an “it’s complicated” status on Facebook, you will want to have this letter. Keep in mind, even if you have sole custody or sole guardian-ship, you will still need this letter signed by the other parent unless you specifi-cally have a court order or agreement stating their consent is not required.

Now what happens if you cannot obtain the other parent’s consent? To avoid any complication, you should speak with a lawyer as to how you would go

about applying to the Court for an Order dispensing with the other parent’s consent. To ensure there are no disruptions to your travel, do this as soon as possible, because you may further be required to take a special parenting course referred to as ‘Parenting After Separation’ before you may be able to

apply to the Court. In our jurisdiction, this Course is currently only offered every second month and therefore, it would do no one justice to wait 10 days before your scheduled trip to speak with a lawyer if you’re having difficulty finding or obtaining the other parent’s consent.

Remember, this is only required for international travel and not out of town, city, or province travel as some may believe unless, once again, specifi-cally restricted by a court order or agreement signed with the other parent.

Happy Travels!

Since the beginning of time women have been making huge

contributions within their families, their workplaces, their com-

munities and the world. Locally, there has been a real need to

recognize Wood Buffalo’s hard working, critical thinking, intelligent

and inspirational women. Women who challenge gender roles in

the workplace and at home, women who break boundaries for

the greater good in their communities, and women who do what

it takes to help the causes they’re passionate about. These are

the type of women that are recognized and celebrated through

Women of Inspiration Series presented by Syncrude

Monica MankowskiSince moving to Fort McMurray in the early 80’s with her husband, Monica has been a tireless supporter of the children of the Wood Buffalo Region. She began teaching in the Fort McMurray Catholic School District but quickly realized that students with special needs held a spe-cial portion of her heart. She is now the Deputy Superintendent-Inclusive Education with the Fort McMurray Catholic Schools.

Monica’s strong dedication to special needs children is endless. She works tirelessly to support the parents and the child to find the best placement or program. She advocates for special needs children around the province, sharing the FMCSD success stories as well as the trials and tribulations. She annually writes program proposals requesting essential funding to continue programming or introduce new funding to support children. She boldly ignores the first rejection and persistently will fight for what is right for children.

The vision, creativity, initiative, drive and leadership of Monica Mankowski has brought about positive change in Fort McMurray. If it is right for children, Monica will be there supporting it in any way she can.

The overall goal of Women of Inspiration is to recognize women throughout the

Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers, and help

create positive change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models

who live right here in our communities.

HOLLY’S INSPIRATION

People inspire me daily, but my main inspiration is my mom, Lina Gallup. She was raised in the bush, with a traditional lifestyle, in Ft McKay by her grandmother and family. When she was 6, she was abducted and taken to Indian Residential School (a Government policy in Canada to force Aboriginal children to assimilate). Her strength and determination to move forward after that was amazing. She became a mother of 4 successful children, an entrepreneur, activist, and a role model who has helped many people along the way. It is a success story. Also my father – Geologist Bill Gallup. He was outdoorsy and full of adventure. Our family life was always so exciting. I am very blessed to come from two extraordinary people.

HOW IS SUCCESS DISPLAYED IN YOUR LIFE?

My biggest love in life is my 3 children. I base my success on the people that they are. They all have a great sense of humour, many talents, interests, amazing partners, morals and character that I am extremely proud of. My daughter and her husband just gave me my 1st grand- daughter, Soleil Cree. Those amazing people are my number one priority.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CAREER PATH?

I knew from a very young age that I wanted to help people. I went to Mount Royal University, and after graduation, worked with Aboriginal Youth. I worked with 100’s of youth one-on-one. I also facilitated wellness programs that were culturally relevant to Aboriginal people. I stayed in that field for over 2 decades, it was very rewarding. At the same time, for 15 years, I worked in the Film/TV Industry as a Stand-in, Actor, Stunt Person, Wrangler, and Producer.

In 2006, I was asked by leadership in Ft McKay to work on Special Projects and Cultural Consulting for the community. I was so blessed to have the opportunity to public speak and much to my surprise, people started asking for more. I developed my ‘Aboriginal Awareness Training’ to tell the story of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada from pre-contact to future. I have now taught thousands of individuals, in over 40 different groups of Industry, Government, Business, and Agencies. I am so full of gratitude – to everyone who believes in me, my work, and the importance of building meaningful and respectful relationships with Aboriginal Peoples and Communities. I am also so thankful that I am surrounded by family and friends that are healthy, wise and support me.

I really believe if you have a good work ethic, are happy and positive, and are a warm person…opportunities will come knocking!

HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

I strongly believe that my purpose is to love God, Love Myself, and Love people around me. So I make the best effort to practice a strong faith; take good care of myself through wellness, fitness and clean eating; and find opportunities to encourage individuals ... and help them find their gifts. In that... I can be a role model to my children, granddaughter and others. I have had the great opportunity to present to thousands of people and I hear over and over again that they not only learned about Aboriginal Peoples, but also learned something positive for their own personal growth. That is such a blessing!!
