Volume 3, Issue 4

There's nothing quite like putting on that special dress for a big event and feeling like a million bucks... feeling like royalty! For me, the feeling came in seeing our cover model, Jasmine – absolutely gorgeous – modelling our original 'McMurray Girl Couture' gown.

The gown grew from concept to creation – tailored from amongst the compilation of the 700 pages of McMurray Girl's issues over the years. As exciting as the creative process was, seeing the dress' form brought to life meant so much more to me. As we lovingly chose and layered pages to create the bodice and skirt, we were taken on a journey. We relived amazing events and reminisced about the fun and collaboration that went into each and every photoshoot. This piece of art is not only a commemoration of our 12 issues, but the accomplishments of each and every one of the women we have featured along the way. The dress tells the rich story of McMurray's female community – the strength, beauty, and creativity of the women who have made this region home.

event tool kitThe team's secret weapon is their “event kit”. If you're planning a wedding or event of your own, create a kit with the following:

1. Band Aids2. Batteries3. Tide 2go Sticks4. Double Sided Tape5. Clear Nail Polish6. Safety Pins7. Screw Drivers8. Industrial Stapler

“Whether our clients are looking to plan a meeting, conference or special event, MacDonald Island Park Event Specialists are on hand to assist. We offer a unique experience, making sure our clients always remain our main priority. Our team of talented profes-sionals are on hand to assist with planning, concep-tualization and execution of the event”, states Kelsey Stefanizyn who leads the team of Event Specialists at MacDonald Island Park.

Kelsey's recipe for a great event is to first make sure she understands the purpose of the event. “What does the client want out of it? Who are they targeting? What is their budget? What can I offer them? How can we push creative boundaries?” – Wise criteria for anyone to consider when embarking on the planning of an event.

Kelsey's personal connection to Mac Island runs deep. Growing up in this community, she even assisted in planning her high school graduation at the facility. She feels she has come full-cirlce in her career. This pride

is mirrored throughout entire team who are a passionate, creative and determined set with a collective, mega-portfolio of impressive event accomplishments at the facility known as Canada's largest social centre.

“The best events always ensure the following: hospitable hosts, incredible live music, mouth water-ing food, décor that leaves a lasting impression and always a little “something” that surprises the guests.”

LARGEST EVENT PLANNED Definitely The Northern Classic. It was an outdoor hockey game in the dead of our Canadian Winter with approximately 5000 people, that also had a live concert with The Trews. It had a lot of moving parts!

All my life, I've known that my mother and I had a special connection. Last year, I found out just how deep it would become. Last year, my family was faced with an incredible challenge. For many years, my mom had been living with liver failure, caused by a blood transfu-sion. After 24 years of living this way, she was in dire need of a liver transplant. Even though my mother had felt ill for years after being in the hospital in 1989, it wasn't until 1996 that she was officially diagnosed with the Hepatitis C disease. Over time, Hepatitis C can become chronic, causing liver failure, among other things.

Growing up, my three siblings and I watched as our mother went in and out of the hospital. I can remember being as young as 10 years old, counting change from under the couch, my piggy bank, and anywhere I could find it – hoping to catch the bus so that I could visit my mom in the hospital while everyone was at school or work.

As children, it was hard for us to under-stand why our mom couldn't receive a new liver or be added to the donor list right away. It took a lot of education from

| a true story of courage, recounted by Tita CoolPhoto © JM Photography

Page 17: McMurray Girl Celebrations 2013

the BC transplant society and family doctors for us to under-stand the complexity of her case, and even longer to compre-hend the process ahead.

21 years after she was diagnosed, my mom was finally told she was being placed on the donor list. At first, we were excited... but soon realized her next obstacles: would she be strong enough for the recovery of an intensive surgery? She also had a rare blood type. As the next couple of years ticked by, my mom continued to get sicker, and was now in need of a transplant as soon as possible.

A routine call to the BC Transplant Society and one question that I felt we had already exhausted over the years, was the beginning of the rest of our lives. I had called to follow-up after the last check up to see where her diagnosis was and what our next step may be. After hear-ing that 6 months to a year was all the time we had left, In desperation, I had asked if there was anything else we could do. The lady over the phone asked me if I had ever thought about being an in-house donor. I had said yes, but thought that my sister and I were not a match (and I guess age, at the time the family had considered it.) She explained that it would be best that I come in for an exam.

I flew out to Vancouver in May for a week of exams – from ultra sounds, to MRIs, to speaking with a psychologist – there was no stone un-turned. I had various exams here in Fort McMurray, as well. One month later, I found out I was a match and they were preparing for surgery in September. They asked me if I wanted to think it over – but I knew I was going to do it no matter what.

The transplant took place on September 17, 2012 in over 10 hours of surgery. My family, husband, and friends in both Fort McMurray and BC were all an amazing support to my mother and I through the entire process. We went through a whirlwind of emotions, but our family stuck together and helped each other through the hard times. My eldest brother, who is like a father figure to us, kept everyone going. My mother's recovery is more complicated than mine was, and she will face yet another surgery, but I'm happy to say that we are both doing well.

My mom is a hard-working, single mother. She is the glue that holds everyone together, the rock that only a mother can be for her family. I had an extraordinary opportunity to give back life to the person who gave me mine, and I took it! This year, more than ever, Mother's Day will be a celebration of love, life and family.

66Ingredients:1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 4 ounces chocolate, broken into pieces 1/2 cup boiling water 2 sticks (8 ounces) butter, at room temperature 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar 4 large eggs 1-1/4 cups flour 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup medium- to full-bodied red wine

Directions:Preheat the oven to 350°. Spray & Flour two 9” cake pans In a medium, heatproof bowl, combine the cocoa powder and chocolate pieces. Whisk in the boiling water until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is combined. In a large bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until blended. Sift in the flour, baking powder and salt and mix until just combined. Alternating, add the chocolate mixture and wine in batches, mixing well between each addition, until the batter is smooth. Divide among the pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 20-30 minutes. Let cool in the pan.

Chocolate Dome

Chocolate Fudge Frosting1 pound powder sugar1/2 cup cocoa1/4 teaspoon salt1/3 cup boiling water1/3 cup butter1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions: Combine dry ingredients, add the butter and mix well, add the water and vanilla mix well. It will look thin but it will get thick and fudgy.

To Make the Mousse:Prepare mold by taking two bowls that match each other, and line them with plastic wrap. Combine and heat the chocolate with the sugar. Melt the ganache in another saucepan. Dissolve gelatin in the water, let soften for at least 5-10 minutes. Combine all of these while still warm and fold in a small amount of the whipped cream to cool it down slightly. Fold in the rest of the whipped cream. Pour into prepared molds, push into them mousse any baked cake of your choice. Freeze overnight. When frozen, remove from the

molds, you can either leave them in the dome shape, or to create the sphere that I did, apply a thin layer of chocolate ga-nache on to one cake & top with the other. Decorate as desired; I like to drizzle mine with a little melted chocolate ganache.

6Ingredients:3 Sheets of Store-bought Puff Pastry 1L heavy cream (36%)15 grams gelatin with ¾ cup water½ cup icing sugar1 tsp vanilla2 cups ripe strawberries, slicedChampagne Extract (can substitute for any type of extract) to tasteWhite Chocolate Ganache

Directions:Prepare your puff pastry (some store-bought puff pastry requires you to roll it out to your desired size.) You will need to make three sheets at a size of 12”x 5”, place parchment paper underneath the pastry on a sheet pan, prick each pastry with a fork several times, then place a greased sheet pan on top of the pastry to weigh them down while cooking. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes. Prepare your filling by softening the gelatin. Whip the heavy cream with the sugar, and both extracts until you have reached soft peaks. Melt the gelatin mixture, gently so you do not overheat. Then fold into the whipped cream.

Take the backside of one of the pastry layers and ice that with the chocolate ganache. If you would like to make a design, drizzle some dark chocolate into the ganache before it sets. Put in the fridge to allow the ganache to harden slightly. Place one layer of the pastry on to your serving platter, arrange ½ of the strawberries on that piece. Pipe ½ cream mousse mixture on top, place another piece of puff pastry & repeat. Top the napoleon with the ganached puff pastry layer. Let set in the fridge for 4 hours.

Who makes a good candidate for teeth whit-ening? Everyone is a candidate. However, teeth whitening is like tanning – not everyone will have the same result. There are hundreds of whitening prod-ucts on the market – some will work better for some people better than others. Most whitening products will provide a noticeable result for the majority of the population.

What's the advantage of having your teeth whitened professionally over the store bought products available? Professional products to not cause much gum irritations, nor sensitivity.

Are there any previous conditions that could prevent me from getting my teeth whitened or prevent me from getting optimal results? Whitening does not work on teeth with tetracycline stain or on crowns, veneers or bonding.

Is there an average 'Shade' Improvement that can be expected? Most people can expect to achieve the lightest, natural white, known as shade A1. Whitening cannot get your teeth 'liquid paper white', or man-made white – as you see in porce-lain veneers. In most cases, we will see a major difference – though, sometimes it's difficult for the person to notice because we bleach the top and bottom teeth at the same time. Because of this, we take before and after shots to verify the extent of the difference to our patients.

How long after the procedure can I expect my teeth to be sensitive? 24-48 hours.

Are there any steps I can take before or after the procedure to help with sensitivity? We suggest Advil, Motrin or ibuprofen.

How long before my 'big day' should I have my teeth whitened? We suggest teeth whitening one week before your event to give time for the sen-sitivity to subside so you can enjoy your 'big day.'

How long after teeth whitening can I eat foods that may stain? 24-48 hours - the longer, the better.

What is the maintenance routine like after the whitening process? You can maintain by using the take home bleaching products.

What different options are available for teeth whitening in your clinic? The first option is Laser Whitening. This consists of one, 2-hour session. The second option is Take Home Whitening. Custom Trays are made for you to wear at home for 3 minutes per day. The more you wear, the whiter your teeth will be, in result.

Get event-ready by whitening up your best accessory – your SMILE...

Community Guide to Recreation, Culture & Social Services

On July 1, 2013, watch downtown Fort McMurray light up with colorful floats and exciting contributors eluding patriotic spirit for the Canada Day Parade. A great way to celebrate Canada’s birthday, support local organizations and - if you’re lucky - get free candy! It is a fun event for all ages!

Looking for an activity, club, or event to get involved in? Every spring and fall the Municipality produces what is popularly known as the Leisure Guide. This comprehen-sive community guide showcases the many recreational and cultural opportunities in the region. Since 2012, a social service directory has also been included. Copies are available for free at the Jubilee Centre and various other locations such as MacDonald Island Park, Keyano College, and the YMCA. It can also be viewed online at www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/CommunityGuide.

Hello, McMurray Girl!Winter is tucked away for the year, spring has sprung, and the summer sun is shining brighter and longer every day. This time of year always brings with it a wonderful sense of new beginnings, rebirth and appropriate to this edition of McMurray Girl… celebrations!

There is no shortage of things to celebrate in Wood Buffalo. We celebrate our people, our history, and the incredible future we have ahead of us.

One event that warrants celebration throughout 2013 is the Wood Buffalo RCMP’s centenary. For one hundred years our police force have been protecting the region and making our neighbourhoods safe places to live. More than a policing presence, the Wood Buffalo RCMP are a dedicated and passionate group of men and women who have been integral to developing our region into a wonderful place to call home. I thank them for the work they have done in this community over the last 100 years and the service they will provide over next 100. I invite you to take advantage of celebrations they will be holding throughout the year to mark the centennial and encourage you to extend a word of thanks and congratulations to them.

These months also bring us Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. I hope you have an opportunity to mark these occasions with loved ones. Given that many of our residents are away from family, perhaps those days provide the opportunity to reflect on someone around you who has been a mentor, a guide, or a role model. Our community is blessed to have an abundance of incredible people to admire, recognize and celebrate.

Of course, at this time of year many of our residents will be celebrating their new life together as wedding bells ring! For those of you in this category, or anyone planning a great spring party, I hope this edition of McMurray Girl offers some great ideas and insights.

Living in lush Wood Buffalo gives resi-dents and visitors access to its abun-dance of outdoor recreational parks. With more than 120 km of maintained trails, all are welcome to walk, run or bike the Birchwood Trails.

If specific sports parks are more your thing, Wood Buffalo can accommo-date; with basketball, baseball, football, skateboard, soccer, tennis and more!

And to cool off after a busy day of play-ing in the recreational fields or jogging the trails of Wood Buffalo, the region has spray parks for a splash of fun.

BUT, we can’t forget the pups of the family- with four off-leash dog parks in Fort McMurray everyone has the opportunity to let loose.

Visit woodbuffalo.ab.ca/living for more information and maps to the various parks in our region.

Sincerely, Melissa Blake, Mayor

Spring is here and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo knows how to celebrate! Beautification Coordinators at the RMWB work hard each year to coordinate the Community Clean Up; beautifying the region for all residents to enjoy! Each Spring, business owners and residents generously commit a couple of hours to the Community Clean Up by picking up unseemly garbage in a specific area of the region.

The RMWB supplies program participants with all of the cleaning supplies needed for the clean-up, including; bags, gloves and picker sticks. Participants are encouraged to docu-ment their community clean-up experience by submitting photos. There are three Com-munity Clean Up Contests; Best Team Photo, Best Clean Up Action Shot and Best Anti-Litter Message (image, video or voice). Garbage bag pick-up is provided by the RMWB to participants after they've finished beautifying their area.

Seville Kwan, Beautification Coordinator at the RMWB, Community Strategies Department, looks forward to the Community Clean Up each Spring.

"Community Clean Up is a fun way to get to know your coworkers and neighbours, while doing something great for the environment. Thousands of volunteers pitch in each year to assist with beautifying our community. Its been exciting to have watched this program grow into what it has become, with more participants registering each year." Register at www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/cleanup

NOMINATE YOUR NEIGHBOUR, coordinated through the Wood Buffalo Communities in Bloom, encourages residents to recognize their neighbours impressive front yard displays in landscaping, planting or floral designs. They danced the night away to the sounds of an Irish band that played Michael Buble tunes, and they stood on a damp green Irish lawn at midnight as I watched fireworks explode over Lough Corrib. They are a glittery pair of high-heeled Jimmy Choo sandals, and they will forever be associated in my mind with a magical night in Ireland.

I think many women associate shoes with special events in their lives. I still recall the first pair of shoes I fell in love with, bought the first week I started University in the city where I grew up. I had liked shoes before, but this pair of shoes, a pair of red and black checked flats that reminded me of the kind of flannel jacket a lumberjack wears, be-came my first “adult” shoes, and I wore them until the soles were paper thin. I suspect it’s because we often purchase shoes for a special occasion, and so they become intrinsically linked in our minds with those events.

They are still in my closet, worn a couple of times since then but unlikely to ever see the kind of celebration they

did at a New Year’s Eve gala in an Irish castle.

I even remember buying the Jimmy Choo sandals I mention above because it was on a very special trip to Selfridges in London, England. The shoe department at Selfridges is like a candy store for shoe lovers, the largest shoe department in the world with thousands on display at any one time. I recall spending hours trying on shoes to match the evening gown I had selected, and finally nar-rowing it down to two pairs of shining champagne coloured heels. Those sandals became part of the celebration for me, even when late at night they were no longer on my feet and instead clutched in my hand by their slender straps. Those shoes were not just part of the celebration, though – they were celebrations themselves.

I think while we might buy shoes for celebrations we can forget that the shoes themselves are cele-bratory. Shoes are a hallmark of personality, a way to define character. A shoe-nista like myself can tell a lot about someone from their shoes, whether they choose stilettos or flats, boots or pumps. The shoes we wear speak to who we are, and they tell the world a tiny little bit about us every time we take a step.

Shoes are not just for celebrations, shoes are cel-ebrations. They celebrate who we are and what we love. They show the world if we are whimsical or practical, if we are more concerned with comfort or fashion, and if we choose to race through life on flats or saunter through on 4-inch heels. Shoes are not meant to be worn to celebrations, they are meant to be celebrations of our personalities and ourselves.

They might just be the things we put on our feet to protect them

from the elements, or they might be the way we signal the world about who we are. Shoes might just be little pieces of leather or

lace or suede to some – but to me they are instead small beautiful

celebrations of the soul of the woman who wears them.

G E TGROOMED

1. The suits make the men. Whether a traditional tux or a well-tailored suit, it's always best to start the wardrobe search a few months in advance. Out-of-town groomsmen can have their measurements professionally taken in their hometowns, which will allow you to order the perfect attire for everyone on your list. 2. Take a comfort cue. Purchas-ing his shoes one month in advance allows him to break them in – avoiding unsightly barefoot reception dancing. 3. Put the 'Man' in manicure. There's no shame in being well-groomed. Book a couples mani or pedi leading up to the event. Once in spa robes and sipping the complimentary wine, this can be a surprisingly intimate way to get event-ready together. 4. Don't be a slave to the shave. Fine barbers such as Tommy Gunn's Original Barber shop offer professional, hot shaves. Book the guys in early that day to allow skin to relax in time for the big moment.

5. 50 shades. Bring his per-sonality into his attire by going beyond basic black. If he's a fun kinda guy, experiment with a patterned tie, a creative boutonniere - or even some fun kicks! Fun accessories can be added after the I Do's.

Chun Chun.

The unmistakable, intoxicating smell of henna delighting your senses.

An aromatic feast featuring scintillating entrees and desserts.

You wake up to the music of bracelets gleaming on your wrists, and the henna smiling on your palms. It’s Eid. The house is in a beautiful, and contagious frenzy. You begin the day with food that you will savour for the next three days, and dazzlingly beautiful clothes await you. If you are from Pakistan that means the latest, top fashion from the Eid collection. It means the tunic-like shirt – kameez, and the shalwar – loose pants, are custom made to ensure you look stunning, and ready to make even the severest critic do a double-take. It means you, and everything today will be memorable.

Eid (rhymes with deed) is a joyous holiday celebrated twice a year by Muslims around the world. Eid is an Arabic word, which means “festivity.” In Pakistan, it is a time to come together as a family, celebrate one another, with good food, beautiful attire for which preparation begins at least a month in advance, or more, and a lovely sense of togetherness.

The first holiday, Eid-ul-Fitar, or the Feast of Breaking the Fast, is celebrated after the holy month of Ramadan, while the second one is Eid-ul-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorating Prophet Abraham’s near sacrifice of his son Ishmael for God – an account that exists in every major holy book from the Holy Quran to the Bible. It follows the pilgrimage to Mecca known as Hajj.

Both three-day holidays are a highlight of the Islamic calendar, and should they fall on a week-day in Canada, or North America for that matter, you will often see Muslims take a day off from work, and school.

Locally, hundreds of Muslims come together to begin both celebrations with a morning prayer before enjoy-ing the day with friends and family, often with a big feast and party.

Fort McMurray fashionistas are in for a treat every time Eid is around the corner. Nisa Collection, our town’s premier Pakistani home-based, licensed boutique specializes in Eid couture and a collection to die for.

“Screen printing on silk is in right now when it comes to hot items in Pakistan. It involves vibrant ink sketches on the fabric, and it’s pretty much a traffic stopper,” explains Juvaria Javaid, who is overseeing Nisa Collection’s local chapter, following owner/designer Uzma Syed’s move to Calgary last summer.

“In addition, our Eid collection will also feature Mogul art, which of course is derived from the days of royalty in India. We have different cuts, styles, and can custom order anything you desire, in addition to bridal wear,” added Javaid.

Thanks to Nisa Collection, Eid means not only being treated to the latest fashion from home, but also to enjoy novelty items like henna, bangles, and other jewelry items, all available for sale.

Nisa Collection is located at 129 Gravelstone Way in Stone Creek. For more information, visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/nisa-collectionsyed

Planning parties can sometimes be so stressful that you, as hostess, never really get to enjoy the good food, specialty drinks or have the opportunity to truly admire the decor. Fort McMurray Public Library can help you plan, create and pull off the perfect summer party from casual backyard affairs to over the top weddings and other celebrations.

Wedding planning in particular, can cause stress for a number of months or even years leading up to the actual wedding date and whether you want to save on budget, save the earth, or savour time with friends and family, you will undoubtedly find useful guides, tips and resources in the library collection. Even though plenty of resources are avail-able online, collecting and checking out material from the public library will allow you to browse multiple resources at once and share with friends and family in a group setting. Passing a book around the room is much simpler than reading out a URL for everyone to enter in their own Internet connect-ed device, isn’t it? Many planning books contain checklists and charts that can be used from the engagement announce-ment right up to purchasing souvenirs for loved ones while on honeymoon. If copying charts is too time consuming for you, then know that by viewing each of the books available, you can make a more informed decision about the book’s con-tents and then purchase the best book to suit your needs.

Party Planning – Engagement and wedding parties, are not the only parties where you can explore your creativity with food and decoration. Planning a get together surrounding a sports event, special picnic or fire pit party will provide you with numerous recipes and ideas for décor that your guests will marvel over yet still allow you to enjoy the event. Cele-brate: A Year of Festivities for Families and Friends by Pippa Middleton, editor of The Party Times, an online party maga-zine from the UK’s leading online party supply company, luxury brand event organizer, and corporate party planner outlines an entire year of celebrations for every age. Give this book a look when considering themes and dishes for your next party.

For party planners who are a little more relaxed, The NFL Gameday Cookbook provides tasty food and delicious drink recipes for the sports loving party goers. The book even has themed recipes for each NFL team!

the buzz | your place to plug in | by

I think the saying goes that, 'every little girl's

dream is to have the big wedding with the dress,

the cake, and her one true love standing at the

altar.' I can honestly say that wasn’t me.

I never dreamed of a princess gown, nor did

I take magazine clippings for a year-on-end,

planning a big extravagant wedding. It was never

something that I thought about... I've always

been kind of a tom boy, I guess. Then, I met the

man of my dreams – my soul mate – my one true

love – the man that has made all of my dreams

come true... and who has stood by me through

everything. That’s when things changed for me.

6 months into dating, Tom proposed to me. We

were in Niagara Falls on New Years Eve. It was

nothing short of spectacular! I was never so

happy to be with him and to think that we would

spend our lives together, forever. So, after we

told all of our family and friends the next step

would be to start planning our dream wedding...

except that wasn’t our plan. We decided to wait

a little while... 2 years actually.

When we decided we were going to get married, we looked around

at a few places. The cost for a wedding venue was adding up quicker

then I could say, "I do". After many discussions and lots of search-

ing, Tom and I decided we would get married in Vegas at a cute little

venue for a very affordable price. Who wouldn’t like a trip to Vegas?

It’s affordable and would be lots of fun... or so we thought.

We planned for this wedding to take place on May 24, 2013. At this

point, it was December of 2012. I had made arrangements to meet

with the planners at the venue, as we were travelling there for Christ-

mas. Everything was going so smoothly – I was so excited for a small

wedding with just our family and friends. I couldn’t wait to marry Tom.

Then, it was time to shop for the dress. Because I didn't have the

normal 12 month planning period, my mom and grandmother

(who had been visiting) came with me to our local bridal boutique

– Castaspella. It was an awesome experience. We tried on many

dresses and our hostess, Jennifer Cluett, was amazing! Then – finally

a dress. A dress that had everything I was looking for... and it just so

happened that 'the dress' was called Cinderella! (Go figure, the girl

who never dreamed of a fairytale wedding would be wearing a

Cinderella dress, after all!) I knew it was the one when my mom

and grandmother started to cry. I just had to say yes to the dress.

Everything seemed to fall into place until it was time to tell our fami-

lies. Tom and I both have family across Canada. It was at this point

that things started to unravel. Sadly, my family is a little broken which

made planning stressful for me. All I wanted was for everyone to get

along. A family member on Tom's side was unable to travel and others

felt that we should get married in Canada, as well.

I was upset. How were we to choose who could stay, and who could

go? When it comes to family, this is an impossible question to answer.

So, Tom and I decided, "screw it!" We would marry in December dur-

ing our Christmas trip! “Just you and me,” he said, "problem solved."

So that’s what happened! In a whirlwind, Tom and I got married on

December 26, 2012 and it was the most perfect day a girl could ever

dream of. There was no stress, no hassle... it was simply perfect! Of

course, our families were technically there – watching live at home on-

line – a neat little service Viva Las Vegas Weddings offered! Tom and I

said "I do", and finished the ceremony with our own vows in under 10

minutes. It was perfect for us, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

you can watch, too!https://webcams.vivalasvegasweddings.com/play/index.php?eventID=3489

D’Andre was recognized for her long term involvement in the National Society of Black Engineers, and for her work to teach leadership and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) to black youths.

D’Andre moved to Fort McMurray in September of 2011, and in addition to her impressive academic credentials and strong engineering career, she is also giving back to the community in various ways, including her work with Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta on the ‘Intro to Engineering’ program.

Vincella Thompson Vincella has lived in Fort McMurray for over 30 years. She has worked an elementary school teacher, as a Behaviour Specialist in private practice supporting children with disabilities and their families, and is currently the Chair of the University Studies, Arts, Education and Social Sciences Department at Keyano College.

Vincella earned her Master’s degree in Education with a Specialization in Special Education at San Diego State University, and a PhD in Education with Training and Performance Improvement from Capella University. She has recently been involved in research projects involving student use of technology in this post-secondary institution. Her current research involves student mental health and wellbeing in the post- secondary institution.

Vincella gives back to the community in many ways – she has served on the provincial Board of Directors for Persons with Devel-opmental Disabilities, the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo, and the Alberta Division of Canadian Mental Health, where she was awarded the 2012 Bettie Hewes Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. She currently chairs the board of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Wood Buffalo.

Nancy Woodward Nancy passed away in December of 2012. She is survived by her seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren; all of whom are extremely proud that Nancy is being recognized as a Woman of Inspiration.

Throughout her life Nancy opened her home to many foster children – at one point wel-

coming eleven children at one time; all of whom she raised along with her own. Nancy also learned midwifery from her aunt and over time delivered many babies in Anzac.

Nancy believed whole heartedly in community, and in the impor-tance of keeping her traditional culture alive. She helped build the first school in Anzac and also taught Cree at Father Turcotte and Anzac schools; making sure that the traditional language wasn’t lost.

Nancy offered her traditional knowledge of the land to many of the developers and environmental groups who operate in the RMWB today. Although Nancy had a modest and quiet disposi-tion, she very boldly and honestly did her part to help ensure that both the land and her culture were protected.
