The McGovern! of HockessIn, Delaware, are mentioned In local histories aslII10ng the early famllles of that 19th-century clay-quarrying community, andtheir Imprint remains In the names of McGovern Road and of businesses carriedal by descendants. Todays McGoverns might readily have misidentified theirthree Immigrant male ancestors as "three brothers who came to America" soOOrtlmon In many famJly accounts, but one ltvlng granddaughter preserves thetradition that they were In fact cousins, whleh Is consistent with thedocumentary evidence.. f-bwever t their exact relationships have not beendetermined, nor has a record or memory of their place of origin In I reiand beenpreserved.

The Hockessin McGoverns' experience Is qUite representative of the pattern ofearly famlne..,ra Irish Immigration to the Ullted States--unmarrled young men orwomen from the same small Carmtng community, often In Uts ter, coming alone orsometimes In pairs to a single locality In America. Here they continued whattheir non-l rlsh neighbors called their "clannish connections" and attractedothers bound by the same ties, In many cases paying for the later passage ofsiblings or parents with money sent back from their meager earnings. Theirattitude of contInuing responsibility toward the family and community they hadleft was In marked contrast to the Individualism of contemporary Immigrantsfrom other cultures like the English and Ge~an, and which critics of the IrishconsIdered a value better suited to America.

The Hockessin area. however, was very untyplcal of the usual Irish-Americansettlement, because It offered both Industrial and agricultural opportunities todie newcomers. The limestone quarrIes and, after 1872, the "clay pits" (kaolinquarries) of the area, whJch were the economic base for Hockessin's growth anddevelopment, provided the unskIlled Industrial Jobs the Immigrants needed onarrival. AvailabIlIty of reasonably priced farm land In the Immediate area gavethem an early opportunity to return to theIr tradItional farming pursuits withoutdisrupting the family and community ties that sustained them during thetr flrstyears In Amerlca.3

The result was a community cohesion among the Irish of fbckessln that lastedfrom the mid-19th century until World War ". As will be seen, the McGovernsand their close neighbors the Laffer ties bought farmland In the area, probably assoon as saVings from their wages permitted. and several generations cont1nue~

farming until 20th ceotury suburbanlzatlon of the area overtook them. In spiteof this unusual stabUJty in one location. however, today's McGoverns, likedescendants of most famlnerera Irish immigrants, have no records or tradJtlonsof their ancestors' place of orIgIn In Ireland, and only one branch has preserveda Bible record of vital events after arriving In the U.S.

The Hockessin McGoverns are so typical of the broader patterns of Irishmigration that the family provides a cas&-study In the micro-demographics of the

famIne era.. Their story-pJeced together from census, land, church, andcemetery records and vital records registrations, with help from severaldescendants--shows how readily Irish-American families may be traced throughthe sources commonly used in American genealogy. The name McGovern and thetwo maternal family names Identified are less corrunon ones, so it was alsolXlsslble to pinpoint the family's probable place of origin In [reland. The"Householder Index" to the family names [n Griffith's Valuation, the 1848-02 landassessment of Ireland, was used to locate the one place where all the family andgiven names of parents occur together--the Parish of Desertmartin, near

4Drapers town , In Derry, now one of the six counties of f\brthern Ireland.

The ~k'essln McGovern! descend from three couples representing fourImmigrant McGovern ancestors--Edward McGovern (ca 1835-1921) and his wifeSarah Hagan (1838-1896); John F. McGovern (1837-1906) and his wife Catherine(1837-1912), also a McGovern by birth; and Daniel McGovern (1849-1928) andIjs wife louisa Denning (1855-1934). [n addition, ties to the family of JohnJ, McGovern lca 1833-1912) of WIlmington and his wife Marla (ca 1840-1908) aresuggested gy their cemetery lot adjoining Edward's [n Cathedral Cemetery,Wilmington.

Earliest /"lcGoverns In Hockessin

The first McGoverns of record In what Is now the I-kK:kessln area wereDaniel, laborer, and EJlza, who appear In the 1850 U.S. Census, age 30 and 20respectively, with Mary Ann, age I, and a John Shayary [?J age 60, also alaborer, living with them, all except Mary Ann having been born In Ire[and. Theywere IJI the house next to John and Mary Lafferty, both 32 and also Irish, andtheir five children, ages 4 to 10. This Daniel McGovern Is probably the Daniel, age 49, "works In Lhne Quarry,· recorded In the household of WIlliam McDo~ell

In the 1870 Census, but nothJng more is known about him or any descendants.

Four houses further on, In the household of John G. Jackson, leading citizenof lixkesstn, developer of Its Jlmestone quarries and kUns and later chiefengIneer of the WIlmington and Western RaIlroad, was a David [or Daniel]McGovern, 50, quarryman, born in Ireland,. forerunner of other McGoverns whoIn future censuses wOUld be found 8S dcmesUcs In the Jackson home, but he hasnot been Identified, and no further record of him has been found. 7

Although the Irish origins of the McGovern and Lafferty famJlles listed In 1850aren't known, their adjoinIng dweJllngs anticipate the future closeness, Inhousing, marriage, and eventually burial, among later arrivals of those names, and strongly suggests famtly connections. Even earlier, 8 Dan Lafferty waslisted In 1827 as one of the Ii pew holders In the newly enlarged (to 14 pews)Catholic church at Coffee Run.

The later-arrivIng famlly of James and Mary (Rogers) Lafferty were todevelop the closest associations with the McGoverJ's. From the birth dates andplaces of their chlIdren, they immigrated ca 1865-71, settling In Kaolin, Justacross the Pennsylvania line from John F. McGovern's farm at Southwood. They'orlglnated like the McGoverns In tbe Draperstown area. James was the son of

Patrick and Mary (Conners) Lafferty. of Keenaght townland In the small civilparish of Kilcronaghan, within the same Roman Catholic parish of Desertmartinwhere the McGoverns probably orlginated.9

The famUles of James Lafferry and of his brother MIchael Lafferry. whoarrived ca 1872-73 with his wife Mary Magdalen (Kelly) and first chUd Peter andalso lived In KaoUn, were representative of a less common post-faminelmmlgratlon 18attern-famllles wIth ~hUdren comIng as a group. rather thanIndivIdually.

No record of the other McGoverns lis ted In the 1850 Census has been foundeIther In New Castle Counry or adjoining Chester Counry PA. and there are nogravestones recorded for them at Coffee Run cemetery In the WPA HistoricRecords Survey. made In 1939. The Lafferty family. without Mary. appears In1860 In the same relationshIp to the Jackson house.

E:dward McGovern came to the U.S. In 1853 and John F. McGovern thefollowing year. according to the 1900 Census. E:dward Is undoubtedly theEdward, age 15, accompanied by Mergt, age 12, both listed without occupationsas arriving In Philadelphia on the ship Tuscarora from Uverpool. probably viaDerry, on 12 March 1853. John may be the John. listed as age 13 although hisaetual age would have been 17, who arrived on the Tonawanda 24 April 1854.since no other John Is found In the PhUdelphla Index for that year. 11

Catherine Mc Govern also came to the U.S. In 1854. according to the 1900Census; she may be the Catherine, no age or occupation Hsted, who arrived onthe Wyomlnll. on 24 Oct 1854. On II Nov 1855. she and John McGovern werewitnesses when Edward McGovern married Sarah Hagan, prob8blYl~t St. Mary's,Coffee Run. although recorded at St. Joseph's-<ln-the-Brandywlne.

John F. McGovern also had a sister Ann, known from famlly tradition but notIdentified in records, who married and moved to California, but was never heardfrom arter the San Francisco earthquake and was presumed a victim by thefamlly. Jnhn F. McGovern's cemetery lot at Ashland is shared with his Laffertyand Baldwin sons-tn-law; aJJ three names are on 8 large central monument. 16

Among the other seven boarders Usted In the McKenna household in 1860 wasanother Jo~n McGovern, quarryman, age 25 (perhaps the John J. McGovern bornca 1833 who later lived In Wilmington, but possibly a duplicate entry for the firstJohn Usted) and Daniel McGovern, 17, teamster. He Is probably the sameDaniel, age 23, who was a blacksmith in Red Lion Village, Red LIon Hundred, In1870 and who married In 1871 (bond dated 25 March) louisa Denning, daughterof Michael Denning, Irish-born shopkeeper of Red Lion, Village, Red LIonI-klndred, and his wife Bridget. Daniel and louisa remained In Red Lion until1884, when Louisa purchased a lot In HockessIn for $140. 17 , 18

Although Daniel, blacksmith and husband of louisa, was 23 In 1870 and born InAug 1849 accordIng to the 1900 Census, and so four to six years younger thanDonlel the teamster as reported in 1860, such a conflict with the Informationgiven the 1860 census-taker about a workIng child boarder would not beunusual-partlcularly wben John's possible duplicate entry with different ages Isfound In the same Ust of boarders. As noted in the 1900 Census, Danlers age50, Aug 1849 birthdate, 1856 immigration and 44 years residence In theU.S. would place his age on arrival at seven. 19

WhIle no direct evidence for a relationshIp of the Hockessin McGoverns toJohn J. McGovern of WilmJngton has been found, such a relationship might beInferred from the fact that Edward and John J. bought adjoining cemetery lots Inthe then recently opened New Cathedral Cemetery In WilmJngton--John J. to burya 24-year-old daughter who died In 1893, Edward to bury his wife Sarah In 1896,as noted In the cemetery records cited earlier. Most other Hockessin

The Index prepared by the National LIbrary of Ireland for surnames InGriffith's Primary Valuation of the Lands and Tenallents of Ireland. sometimescalled the "H>useholder Index," provides 8 means for zeroing in on 8 small areawhere all the family names Identified may occur. The valuation of County Derrywas made In 1859, so the likelihood of finding the parents as occupants of realestate Is high. The names McGovern, ~1cGuckln and McIlwee are not among themore common Irish surnames, and they occur together only tn the parish ofDesertmartln, where 5 to 18 of each are found, along with Hagans and oneLafferty; additional McGucklns, Hagans, and Laffertles are found In the adjoiningcivil parish of Kllcronaghan, which Is part of Desertmartln Roman CathoJkcparish. The old Hockessin family name of Gormley Is also found In the parish.

Among occupants of the 40 holdings In TIrgan town/and are found Neal, Johnand Phlllp McGovern--names of three of the known fathers of the lnunlgrants-aswell as four other McGoverns-Brldget, Patrick, Daniel and Bernard-and fourMcllwee families. While there are no McGucklns In TIrgan, 13 are found In theimmediately surrounding townlands, along with six more McGoverns, includinganother Neal, and three McIlwees.

Of the known McGovern parents, only Fergus and one John--probably Daniel'sfather-are not found In TIrgan, and both identifIed maternal surnames can befound there or close by; the evidence strongly points to TIrgan as the Irishhome of the McGoverns of Hockessin.

Genealogical publication has two advantages, other than the obvious one ofpreserving and disseminating the results of research. First. It may bring newdata sources to light, and second. It lets the author correct erroneousconclusions. based on either the new data or sound criticism by otherlIOnealoglsts. Part I of this article In the last Issue has already produced boththese beneficial effects.

"" a result, the conclusion In Part 1 that the Immigrant McGoverns ofHock.essln--Edward, John F., and Daniel-were all cousins must be corrected, based on new Information from Ruth Johnson Glllan of Kennett Square, PA, agranddaughter of Edward who had not been Identlfled earlier. I t Is now clearthat Daniel was a younger brother of Edward, Bnd both were first cousins ofJohn F. McGovern, and also of John J. McGovern of Wilmington, to whom arelationship was only suggested in Part I. Other siblings of Edward who came to

the U.S. have also been Identified.26

The new Information from Edward's granddaughter demonstrates how essentialpersonal recollections are to tracing Irish-American famllles, and how ImportantIt Is to search out all such recollections that stili survive In the memories ofolder family members.

"" descrIbed In Part I, John F. McGovern's granddaughter recalled that thethree immigrant young men were cousins (the other two were In fact firstmuslns of her grandfather) and her recollection appeared to be confirmed bydocumentary evldenc~Danlel's 1927 death certlflcat~whlchshowed his parentsas John '1'rGovern and Sarah, while Edward's were known to be John and NancyMcElwee.

ThIs Is a case where the docwnentary eVidence, being secondary, Is lesslikely to be reliable thlll! oral evidence that Is primary, or based upon flrst-handknowledge. The death certificate of an adult Is not prImary evidence for theparents' identIty. because It is recorded long after the person was born, and Isbased on answers from an informant who usually lacks first-hand knowledge andmay be under the stress of bereavement.

Here the oral account Is from a reliable wItness who knew the parties andwhose curiosity caused her to Inquire about their relationships. Her continuinginterest in the subject matter gives further assurance that her currentrecollection Is more accurate than the Information on Daniers death certificate, even after the passage of many years. •

•To a possible objection that her knowledge Is mere hearsay, It should benoted that hearsay evidence about one's own family relationships Is accepted Incourts as an exception to the usual rule that rejects hearsay testimony in favorof witnesses who actuallv saw an event. The reason Is that none of us know of

Page 8: McGoverns of Hockessin

our own relationships other than by being told about them by other family•members, and this knowledge can be relled upon because people don't readily let

themselves be misled about such an Important matter.

Mrs. GlIIan also offered non-hearsay evidence, In her recollection of the titlesof respect she heard her mother use toward the older generation ofMcGoverns-"Uncle" for Daniel, but "Cousin" for Jobn F. McGovern. She alsorecalled that her mother's godfather was the son of another fiut cousin of hergrandfather, John J. McGovern of Wilmington, whose connection to the HockessinMcGoverns was only suggested In Part I. Her account Is supported by hermother's baptismal record, which shows the godparents were Franctscus(Francis) McGovern and Helena (Helen or Ellen) Hyde; the only Francis ofrecord In either Hockessin or Wilmington at that time was John J. McGovern's19-year-<lld son.28

The McGoverns In Ireland

The relationships among the four Irish forebears (Generation A; NI to N4below) have been Inferred from the relationships among their children, both fromdocumentary sources and as recalled by Ruth Gillan, granddaughter andgrandniece of two of them. No documentary sources bearing directly on theforebears' relationships have yet been found.

Three of the Irish ancestors are almost certainly those recorded as tenantsof the Worshipful Company of Drapers at Tlrgan, Oesertmartln Parish, CountyDerry, In 1859; not only do the names match precisely, but no other parish InDerry or Tyrone has more than two McGovern households listed. The TlrganMcGoverns all held 10 to 30 acres, placing them In the cia.. described by Milleras "middling fanners," as contrasted with "strong farmers· with over 30 acres,or the "smallholder" of 2 to 10 acres, liVing usually on the edge of poverty.31

All of the children of the four who have ao far been Identlfled came to theU.S.; no research has yet been urxlertaken to Identify others who may haveremained In Ireland.

AI. John McGovern, born In Ireland ca 1810, married !'Boey McElwee. He ·Is

probably the aame John recorded as holding a house, outbuildings and II acres I•rod 5 perches of land In Tlrgan townland, 1859. John and Nancy were brought to

Since he is not found In the 1900 Census, It was probably his death thatwas recorded at tbckessln 24 Mar 1893, with his parents named as (another)John McGovern and Mary. l-bwever t his age, given as 95, exceeds by 12 yearshis age based upon the 1880 Census. Place of burial is not given. 32

The First American Generation

5. Edward l McGovern (Jobrt) was born In 1835 or 1836 based on the 1880census and his age at death, probably at TIrgan, Deser trnar tin , County .Derry.Although the 1900 Census shows him born In Jan. 1839, this would have madehim only 16 at the time of his marrIage. He arrived In the U.S. 12 Mar 1853 onthe Tuscarora from Liverpool to Philadelphia, with his age recorded as 15 andaccompanied by "Margt", probably his sIster, age 12.37

He marrIed Sarah Hagan on II IIbv 1855, probably at St. Mary's, Coffee Run,although recorded at St. joseph's-on-the-Brandywlne, with cousin john F.McGovern and Catherine McGovern (most likely his cousIn, since his sister•CatherIne probably hadn't yet come over) as witnesses. Sarah's malden name Is

Page 10: McGoverns of Hockessin

•Page 52 Delaware Genealogical Society Journal Vol. 4

known from the death certlflcate of her daughter Sally; her own death certificateis silent as to her birthpl~ce and names of her parents. From her age of 58 ather death on 23 Sep 1896, her birth was about 1838. She was born In Irelandaccording to the 1880 Census, but her age, recorded as 39, only 14 years olderthan her eldest daughter, Is probably understated there. A granddaughterrecalls that the Hagans originally settled farther north, perhaps around NewYork, some years before they carne to li:>ckessln, and thought Sarah may havebeen born In the U.S. The other Hagans removed to Kentucky and were not heardfrom afterward.38

Edward has not been found In the 1860 Census for either New Castle Co.,Del., or Chester Co., Pa., but appears to have lived Just across the state lineIn Chester County at least from 1861 to 1867. An 1860 move to Pennsylvaniaafter the census enumeration there but before the Delaware count would explainhis absence from the lists for both states. Hs chlldren were listed as born InDelaware up to 1859, but In Pennsylvania between 1861 and 1866. He Isdescribed as "now or late of New Garden Township, Chester County, Pa." (justacross the state Une from Hockessin) at his 25 March 1868 purchase of 23.29acres on the north side of the Newport and Gap [Lancaster] Turnpike, Just westof a private lane that was later opened as McGovern Road. In the 1870 Censusfor New Castle County he Is Usted as a farmer. By 1880, although st!1I at thatlocation, the Census gives his occupation as quarryman, Indicating that farmingwas not his principal source of income. His first nine chJldren are listed In the1870 Census, and 12 of the 14 total In 1880~90ne had died young before 1880, andthe youngest was not born until after 1880.

Edward's McGovern Road property was the first of several McGoverrrownedplrcels in that Immediate vicinity; his cousin John F. bought six acres just tothe east. across McGovern Road. a year later. and in 1898 Edward's youngerbrother Daniel bought the 10 acres adjoining on the west-a parcel that wouldeventually pass through all three branches of the famlly.40

Although small parcels were sold off from Edward's original 23 acres startingIn 1883, most of the property remained In the possession of Edward'sdescendants until the'1987 death of his granddaughter Marjorie C. Meany, whohad worked the farm with her twin brother Jay; after Jay's 1973 death she soldthe farm. but retained a life interest in the house. where she lived until herdeath.

41

Edward's fortunes prospered sufficiently for him to Invest in several otherpieces of real estate between 1883 and 1888, Including 151 acres of farmlandalong the pike for $14,123; 60 acres of farmland on the north side of OldWilmington Road opposite McGovern Road for $4,666; two lots In Hockessin oneither side of the turnpike, and a 59' by 44' lot on Grant St. In Hockessin, whichhe sold In 1899 to Lodge No. 4 of the Colored American Protective Association •

•This may have been the site where his daughter Mary taught school for the blackchlldren of the area, while his daughter Kate taught In the white school onValley Road; a granddaughter recalls that Mary taught In a building her fatherowned.42
