McCall Matters May 2013
General Manager’s Letter Bob Casler
Where did the month of April go? Unfortunately the weather hasn’t been the best to open the season. Let’s
all hope that May will bring us the perfect weather we have had in the past several years. Our Spring Scramble was
outstanding with 129 people in attendance and being sold out weeks before. What a day, even with the chilly
weather. The entire staff did a brilliant job. Our staff as usual, gave 110 percent. Joe Candelore and his staff did a
fabulous job with the rear of the clubhouse. Now we need some warm weather to get the area growing.
Our annual Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch is filling up nicely. The last three years this event
has been a sellout, so to accommodate more members like last year, we are having two seating’s. Chef
Bill, as usual, has a great menu planned. Bill Shields and his staff will be prepared to accommodate your
family and friends. Many restaurants are over booked on Mother’s Day, so if you have been to other
places and have experienced waiting and poor service as well as cold inadequate food try McCall. I’m
sure you will be quite satisfied. Call Bill Shields at 610-734-7900 for the perfect table.
For the past two years we started bundling events and will continue this year as it was a success.
We are open on Tuesday evenings for our Tuesday Night Golf League and Poker Night that is once a
month. We offer a $13 buffet for all members each week, so members please invite your guests to come
out to McCall. During the month of May we are planning to open the Grille at McCall on Thursday
evenings as well to accommodate the Thursday All Star Event. We hope that by adding Thursday night in
the Grille this will give our membership another evening to join us for a light fare menu. Look for a flier to
announce the start. For Tuesday night, Chef Bill is planning a different theme or menu each week and the
feature entrée will be posted.
After reviewing 200+ member surveys that were sent out with our dues letter for 2013, I am proud
to report that the general consensus was again above average, giving the golf course and Pro Shop higher
marks than 2012 and the food and beverage at above 93%.This is paramount to our operation, because
without the support of our members, none of our growth would be possible. For the folks that had
comments and suggestions for improvement, we are listening and will continue to strive to accommodate
everyone. Thank you all for taking the time to fill out the survey.
Let’s talk about safety! I would like to ask for some support from our membership relative to
another lifesaving issue. As you may be aware, we have two automated external defibrillators (AED) on
site at McCall. One is in our Pro Shop and the other is located outside the fitness room for obvious
reasons. We have at McCall several employees that have been certified in first aid and safety. I would
greatly appreciate if a few members would volunteer to spend a little time with our Safety Committee
Chairman, Joe Candelore, for a short briefing about these devices and discuss a plan of action. The more
people that are trained in the use of these devices, the higher our probability is of helping someone survive
a heart attack.

I If you are willing to step forward for the good of our Club, contact Joe Candelore at 610-734-7916
or email him at [email protected]. It only takes a few people to stand up and volunteer and
the rest will follow. I express my thanks in advance. Also for our member’s convenience, you will notice
we now have sun block in our locker room areas.
Enjoy your Golf Season!

The Golf Course Joe Candelore, Director of Golf & Facilities
We have had a couple tastes of spring but nothing consistent. Matter of fact some days it was down
right cold and the wind seems to always be blowing. Soil temperatures are still below 60 degrees and soil
activity and turf growth really start to happen as we approach that mark. The course is coming to life slowly
but the slower growth has the greens firm and quick. We pushed back aeration to get through the Spring
Scramble, GAP team matches, start of the Tuesday Night Golf League and just to let everybody get back
into the swing of golfing. With the greens growing slow, they would have taken several weeks to heal and
we could not afford that time. We will aerate on Monday, May 6th, to make sure the greens get what they
need to make it through the season.
In between taking care of the course, we have been working on the range and gazebo area. Right
now the mats and lower range are open and the Pro Shop will tell you where to go. Once the weather warms
and all the aeration, seeding, top dressing and fertilizing we have done takes effect we will put the rest of the
range into service. In talking with Eric, we have divided the range into areas as it is contoured (upper,
middle, lower range and short game area). We will have signage that will tell you when each area is open or
closed. When the upper range is open, no other part can be open because of safety issues. We will roll
through open and closing of the different areas on a daily basis and this will be published so you know, so
watch as this area comes back to life. Our four additional riding carts seem to be very popular. It seems as
though a lot of people are opting to ride but don’t forget at McCall walking is the best way to enjoy the
course. As always hit ‘em long and straight and thanks for being a member at McCall.

May Hours of Operation
Mondays - 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Tuesdays thru Fridays - 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM
Weekends & Holidays - 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM
Even though we have not had much of the spring weather, we are almost out of the woods with the
cold. May will most likely bring a few cold spells. However, those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are
right around the corner. I hope to see you all out and enjoying the weather and the golf course. We have a
gem here and you should be taking advantage of some time out on the course.
TOURNAMENT RESULTS
129 players participated in this year’s Spring Scramble. We dodged some rain that was supposed
to come through. Although it was a bit cool and windy, everyone had a great time. Thank you to all who
participated. I hope you all can join us for the Fall Scramble in October.

As we head into May, and even better weather, April marked an energetic start to our golf season
here at McCall. The Tuesday Night Golf League has started along with the GAP Team Matches. On
April 20, we held our annual kickoff event – another great Spring Scramble. As usual, we had a sellout
crowd and as usual all of the staff at McCall did a great job to make everyone’s day so enjoyable. Check
out the Pro’s section for all the winners.
Congratulations to all three of our golf teams for their perfect start to the GAP Team Match
season. Each team won their opening match. Hopefully their records will continue through the second and
third weeks. By the way, don’t forget that the first tee will be closed again on Sunday, May 5, from
8:30 AM to 11:15 AM for the last week of these matches.
Don’t forget that you can (should) post all of your rounds on the GAP handicap computer. This
includes all 9-hole scores and any partial rounds of seven or more holes (as a 9-hole score) or 13 or more
holes (as an 18-hole score). If you have any questions, contact me, Rick Bunn (our Handicap Chairman) or
the Pro Shop staff.
Another GAP info item - If you’re looking for some more competition or a different kind, go on to
the GAP website (gapgolf.org) and take a look at their group of thirteen new 9-hole weeknight leagues –
GAP League Play. These leagues are being set up at a number of public courses all around the area.
Last GAP item - Congratulations go out to several members on their recent successes in GAP
competitions:
Matt Koehler – 1st place overall in the April 8 Members Play Day at Manufacturers
John O’Rourke – 3rd place Senior Net in the March 20 Winter Series event at Green Valley and 1st
place Senior Net in the April 4 Winter Series event at Talamore.
Nice going guys!
Club Championships
Quickly approaching are the two men’s Club Championship events; the Club Match Play
Championship (the Rubenstein) and the new Club Stroke Play Championship.
The Championship Flight of the Rubenstein crowns the year’s Club Champion. The first step in all
this is the annual Qualifying process; 36-holes to be played, “whenever”, between May 13 and 27 to
attempt to qualify for the Championship Flight play. Anyone not qualifying for that flight will be placed in
Flight B or C, based on their handicap. The match play schedule begins on May 29 with two weeks
allowed for each round’s match.
Golf Committee Report Bob Murray, 2013 Chairman
Page 8 May 2013 McCall Matters
These Qualifying scores also will count as the first 36-holes of the 54-hole Stroke Play
Championship. Everyone in the Stroke Play event will play their final round together at 9:30 AM on
“Championship Day” Saturday, June 1. After everyone is finished, the Champion and the various flight
winners will be announced, followed by some socializing. Sounds like a fun day. For more information,
please see Bob Casler’s April 27 email and flier or contact the Pro Shop.
For those who want to play in just the Rubenstein tournament (which is fine but I don’t know why
you wouldn’t want to play in both the Rubenstein and the Stroke Play Championship), you can either play
in the 36-hole Qualifying (to try for placement in the Championship Flight) or sign up in the Pro Shop (for
placement, by your handicap, directly into the appropriate flight for handicapped match play). I certainly
hope that you’ll sign up for at least one of these events.
Coming up in early June are the Women’s Club & Senior Club Championships.
The next Golf Committee meeting will be at 5 PM on Wednesday, June 19. This will be the
annual ride-around-tour of the course hosted by Joe Candelore and Green Chairman, Howard Loflin.
As the course gets into really great shape, your help is needed to keep it that way. Please fix or fill
several divots or ball marks on tees, fairways and on each green. Don’t forget to rake every trap that you
step into. The new sand really is messed up by each and every step and by every shot you hit out.
Here’s to great golfing during a beautiful time of the year.

will be golfing every Wednesday at 8:15 AM with a different tournament each week. Our season goes

away!

Culinary Corner William Bodek, Chef
Well after a cool April, hopefully Mother Nature will give us a warmer month. Of course, while
working in the kitchen I'm enjoying every moment of this unseasonable cool weather, but all good things
will come to an end. Our Grille menu has a couple of new additions such as The Cuban (pulled pork with
Swiss cheese and ham on a sourdough baguette, grilled) and our Signature Grilled Cheese (grilled cheese
with bacon and tomato served on sourdough bread) which have been popular hits. Changes to our Mixed
Greens Salad has a blend of an assortment of baby greens added (baby oak, baby fraise, and baby red leaf).
As many of you know during our Tuesday Night Buffet, I'm always asking you for any suggestions for
future buffet nights and was asked if I could find a healthy salad that could be served as a dish or wrap so I
would suggest this menu recipe that works for both.
White Bean Tuna Salad - Serves 4 to 6 People
Ingredients
2 (6-ounce) cans dark meat tuna, packed in olive oil
2 (15-ounce) cans cannellini white beans, drained and rinsed
1/3 cup small capers, nonpareil in brine, drained and rinsed
6 tablespoons red wine vinegar
Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper
1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
1-1/2 cups cherry tomatoes
2 cups fresh arugula
6 fresh basil leaves
Directions
In a large bowl, add the tuna, reserving the olive oil in a separate small bowl. Break tuna into bite-size
pieces with a large fork. Add the beans and capers. Into the bowl of olive oil, add the red wine vinegar.
You should have 1 part vinegar to 2 parts oil (add more extra-virgin olive oil if necessary). Season with
salt and pepper. Pour dressing on the tuna, bean and caper mixture and allow the flavors to infuse while
slicing the vegetables. Add the onion and tomatoes to the tuna mixture and toss gently.
Place the arugula on a large decorative platter and top with tuna mixture. Tear fresh basil leaves over the
top and serve immediately. Bon Appetite!
