By. Martha SchoenNever say, “I hope

you have a child just like you!” because you will be the grandparent of that child. These are words from Dr. Ray Guarendi who presented “Laughter… The Sanity of the Family” on April 3 at the Spiritual Center of Maria Stein.

Dr. Ray is the father of ten children, a clinical psychologist, author, public speaker, and a nationally syndicated radio host. He has appeared on Oprah and CBS This Morning. His career has been built around putting authority and self-confidence back into the hands of good parents.

Over the past 30 years, discipline has become a dirty word. Parents are questioning themselves. They are getting grief for disciplining. Even though the purpose is to teach morals and have children learn to accept consequences for their actions.

Dr. Ray believes parents have loss confidence and authority in large part because of the onslaught of experts. He says beware of

experts. Experts are all over in women’s magazines, TV, and radio. It’s like you have to have a PhD to raise a child. Most experts will teach you how to discipline based on their values not necessarily yours.

Dr. Ray talked about a child receiving a cookie. The parent asked the child, “What do you say?” and the child did not respond. After prompting the child two more times to say thank you, the parent took the half eaten cookie from the child and returned it. The person who gave the child the cookie did not say you are a great parent because you are teaching your child manners and gratitude. Instead the person said, “Oh, that’s okay,” and gave back the cookie.

Dr. Ray use to tell parents in order to raise grateful children take away 50% of everything: toys, clothes, books, etc. Now he recommends eliminating 80-90% of the materials things that they have. The children will learn to amuse themselves better and the children will be more

grateful. Those who have less are more generous.

All of Dr. Ray’s ten children are adopted. His son John was put into foster care at 15 months. John did not receive any discipline at his foster home. He would not stay in bed and would be up wandering around the house at night. John was 4 years old the first weekend he stayed with Dr. Ray’s family. Dr. Ray carried an unwilling John upstairs and held him down in his bed. Dr. Ray told John, I am not going to let you go until I feel that you are going to stay here in bed. And, if you do get up I will be back. Then Dr. Ray asked his other son who was six to talk to John. His son said I’d listen to him. I tried it once and he was waiting there outside the door for me, and I got in trouble. I’d listen to him. He means what he says. At the end of the weekend, when the social worker came to pick up John, she asked if John had stayed in bed. Dr. Ray said that he did okay. The first night was a little rough, but the second night was

society. We want results instantly. How long will this take to work? Dr. Ray said that in the foster home it would likely take more than one night to teach John to stay in bed. John did not know what to expect from Dr. Ray and once he realized that Dr. Ray was not bluffing, he stayed in bed.

How many times has a child interrupted you on the telephone? If they interrupt you, send them to their room or put them in a time out.

If your child is disrespectful to you, have him write a 500 word essay on respect. If he continues to be disrespectful, you just keep adding … 600, 700, 800 words.

Dr. Ray also talked about blackouts. A blackout is where you shut the child down. No outside activities, no TV, nothing except love, a little food and maybe the bathroom.

He used blackouts for potty training. First, the child who is not ready to

MARIA STEIN, OHIO- The Marion Local Board of Education met for its monthly meeting on April 11 at 7:30 p.m. The highlight of Monday’s meeting included plans to the 2012 two week period of summer shutdown.

The current summer shutdown at Marion Local includes a two-week period during the first two weeks of July, in which the school facilities are shutdown and no athlete can have contact with his or her coach. An idea was proposed from the Athletic Council for next year’s shutdown. This would include a two week period in which, the first week the school facilities would be shutdown and no athlete could have contact. The second week would include the school facilities to still stay closed, but the coaches could have contact with athletes if

needed. Therefore, they hoped student athletes would be able to attend summer camps during this second week. Another idea was proposed to push the shutdown up a week. No action was taken on this proposal.

The technology coordinator, Dot Garman, discussed the new web page that recently went live on the web. Viewers can log on to www.marionlocal.org to view the new Marion Local Schools web page. Along with this, Patty Lefeld, Co-MLEA president, discussed recent activities within the MLEA. Self-defense classes were offered to all faculty, and the classes were a complete success. Also, the Race to the Top program is continuing training and preparation for the professional development of the teaching staff.

A Celina man who was already serving prison time on a Mercer County Sheriff’s Department investigation is now facing a five count indictment based upon the Celina Police Department investigation into an armed robbery at the Marathon located at 1027 N. Main Street. The incident was reported to the Celina Police Department on August 22, 2008, at 11:04 p.m.

At the time of the incident it was reported that a lone gunman wearing a blue ski mask had demanded money from the cashier when she walked from the back room of the business into the retail area. After taking the money from the register the suspect fled on foot around the south end of the building. It was suspected at the time that

the suspect had a vehicle waiting near the rear of the building. During the 30-month investigation it was determined there had, indeed, been a vehicle waiting with a second subject who served as the get-away driver.

Det. Ron Waltmire worked the case for over two years, gathering bits and pieces of information from varied sources during other non-related investigations. His diligence paid off late

in 2010, when he was able to determine the identities of the two suspects. Johnathan R. Dooley was identified as the suspect that entered the convenience store and brandished the weapon, demanding cash. The case was presented to the February session of the Mercer County Grand Jury, which issued the five count indictment. Dooley has been returned to Mercer County to face the indictment that includes two counts of Aggravated Robbery, (F-1), two counts of Robbery, (one F-2 and one F-3), and one charge of theft, (M-1).

The second suspect, who was the driver of the car, has not yet faced charges. His name is being withheld pending the filing of formal charges in connection with this investigation.

401(k) Review and Rollover Can Be Rewarding

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of earnings potential and a variety of investment options — so it’s a great tool for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. That’s why you should review your 401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.

Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isn’t available, you might want to consult with a financial professional to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit from your plan.

As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this:

“How much should I contribute?” At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t earn this match, you are essentially walking away from “free money.” Beyond this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if you’re eligible, you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth potential, provided you’ve had your account for five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½.

Of course, it’s not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines its success — it’s also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars. (Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices, such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right investment mix, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:

• Your age — Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because you’ll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat more conservatively, but you’ll still need some growth potential in your 401(k) portfolio.

• Your goals — Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your 401(k).

• Your other retirement income sources — If you have a variety of retirement income sources — a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse with generous retirement benefits — you may need to invest differently, perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement income.

Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out of your plan? Here’s a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly, you’ll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate retirement goals.

As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many ways — so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)’s performance.

If you’re purchasing a new home or refinancing your existing one, you’ve got some mortgage-related decisions to consider. And since your mortgage may well be the biggest financial transaction you ever make — and one that can affect your long-term financial goals, such as retirement — you’ll want to weigh your options carefully.

What types of choices might you face? Here are some of the most important ones:

• Fixed or adjustable? With a fixed-rate mortgage, your payment will remain the same throughout the life of your loan. However, if interest rates drop significantly below your mortgage rate, you may then be paying too much for your loan and will have to go through the time, effort and expense of refinancing. With an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM), your initial rate is likely quite low, so you can afford a bigger mortgage. This could be an advantage if you know your income will be rising or you are confident you’ll sell your house within the next five years. However, your ARM payment and interest rate can rise substantially, even with caps in place, and these adjustments can affect your cash flow. So, before taking out an ARM, make sure you understand the terms involved and how they will affect you down the road.

• 15-year or 30-year? These aren’t the only mortgage lengths available, but they are among the most common. The advantage of a 15-year mortgage is that you’ll pay it off quicker and, in the process, potentially save thousands of dollars in interest. The disadvantage, of course, is that you’ll likely need to come up with much bigger monthly payments than if you took out a 30-year mortgage. And since your mortgage payments will be lower with a 30-year loan, you’ll have more money available each month to invest for the future.

Over time, these extra investments can really add up. Suppose, for example, that you invested $100 a month to a tax-deferred vehicle, such as a traditional IRA, that earned a hypothetical 7% average annual return. After 30 years, you’d end up with a little more than $117,000, before you started paying taxes on withdrawals. But if your 30-year mortgage freed up enough cash for you to contribute $300 a month to that same IRA, earning that same 7% average annual return, you’d accumulate more than $350,000 after 30 years, before taxes . That’s a big difference — and the extra money could perk up your retirement lifestyle considerably. Keep in mind, of course, that these examples don’t reflect the performance of any available investments. Also, you will have to pay taxes when you start taking withdrawals from a traditional IRA, and any withdrawals you make before you turn age 59½ might be subject to a 10% penalty.

• Larger or smaller down payment? The bigger your down payment, the smaller your monthly payments, and the more you may have available to invest each month. But if you go with a smaller down payment, you most likely will initially have more money available for other purposes, such as paying down debt or purchasing investments. You’ll have to compare the alternatives carefully.

In fact, you’ll have to compare the options for each question we’ve looked at because mortgage issues have an emotional component as well as a financial one, and only you can make the decisions that fit your situation. So think about your choices today, as they can have a big impact on your life tomorrow.

On April 19, McDonald’s is launching National Hiring Day. The company plans to hire 50,000 people during this job event on a single day nationwide. In response to National Hiring Day, I have a great story to share: “I have a McJob – and I’m darn proud of it.”

In 1972, I began my McDonald’s career at a red and white tile building on Allentown Road in Lima, Ohio. My first job turned into a dream that became a vision of owning my own “Golden Arches” one day.

My first job also led to my first date with a blond-haired girl training on her first job for a new restaurant opening in Wapakoneta. She would become my wife and lifelong business partner now for over 30 years.

Although we had no college education or little savings, we remained undaunted in our

vision to one day own the counter we worked behind. Our McDonald’s journey took us from Ohio to Montana and back, with the unique opportunity to purchase the very restaurant where we began our McJobs. We now own five McDonald’s restaurants in the area, and proudly watch our three children fulfill the same vision as “Next Generation” Owner/Operators.

Who would have thought this would have come from a “McJob?” The image of a dead-end job does not tell the true story. We are not just a hamburger business that serves people. We are a people business that serves hamburgers – and opportunities. We still believe in opportunities, and enjoy creating them for others.

Consider that half of all McDonald’s franchises started as restaurant employees, as do 40 percent of McDonald’s corporate staff and 30 percent of its senior staff. On the local front, that one Lima restaurant produced a global purchasing officer for McDonald’s, a regional senior accounting director in Columbus, an award-winning restaurant manager in Hilliard, another 5 store McDonald’s franchisee in Arkansas, and our own multi-generational family business.

My grandmother summed it up perfectly when she advised me as a young man to take that first big job, “because people always have to eat.”

She was SO right!Jeff & Mary Monfort

Why i love my “mcJob”

$112.79 ! I am sure you all have seen this figure bounced around for the past few days. If not let me enlighten you on the matter. It is the current price of oil per barrel as of this writing. By the time you read this it will probably be even higher. I don’t know how most of you feel about the prices at the gas pumps but I think maybe you are as disgusted as I am at the price for a gallon of gas. I think it is time the United States becomes less dependant on foreign oil. There has to be a better way to go and I think it

comes down to tapping the natural oil found in the U. S. There seems to be no reason why the powers that be can’t come to a workable way to utilize the natural resources we have right here in the United States. With today’s technology, there is no reason why this can’t be accomplished with little or no difficulty. As far as costing too much, that is a farce that some people are using to prevent the drilling for oil in the United States. The time has come to appeal to your congress man or woman and let them know just how you

feel about this matter.A special thanks are

in order to all those who worked on the construction of the new depot and press box at the Memorial Park. They are both excellent additions to the park and as usual it shows how important the Community Picnic is to the town of Coldwater. As one who has seen this park develop through the years, it proves that anything can be accomplished when you all put your efforts together for a common goal.

This week’s “Words of Wisdom”: How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire? You All Take Care.....See You Next Week...

Letter to the EditorIf you live in Coldwater or frequent Community hospital at

some time you have seen our son. Chad rides a red pedal car, circling the block and on most days singing as loud as he can. Chad was born with Cerebral Palsy 22 years ago.

Cheryl Ann has been a large part of our support system from the very beginning, with infant stimulation, early intervention, speech, and occupational and physical therapies. And most recently, job placement, adult day services, and the workshop on Mud Pike.

Chad’s success is because of hard work, the programs provided by Cheryl Ann, a wonderful staff dedicated to what they do and a community that generously supports its MrDD programs.

Cheryl Ann and the MrDD program once again needs your support. look out over your community and see how maybe your family member, neighbor or friend has benefited from these programs and vote yes.

Celina Couple Receives Albert HecklerAward from Cheryl Ann Programs

louis and Dorothy hoyng never imagined that they’d be-come involved with cheryl Ann Programs.

they were raising three happy, healthy boys in their celinahome. louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door, and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. they were atypical family.

then a very atypical thing happened. their middle son,Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. Withthat bolt out of the blue, the hoyngs’ lives changed forever.

the odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,but the hoyngs couldn’t afford to spend much time thinkingabout their terrible luck. they had a son who needed themmore than he ever had. the first years after Brian’s accident, which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult, they said, as they searched for someone who could help themhelp Brian.

their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-Superintendent ralph Stelzer recommended a place the hoyngsknew about but had never visited as parents: cheryl Ann.“cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,”louie hoyng said. “it gave Brian his life back.”

the people of cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everydaylife. they gave him a place to go and jobs to do. he made newfriends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,up to and including the bus ride out to mud Pike.

“When he would see Sam morden (his bus aide) he wouldjust smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knewhow to make him laugh,” Dorothy hoyng said.

it wasn’t long before the hoyngs were finding ways to re-pay cheryl Ann for its help. they were regular volunteers.

louie hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the uniqueequipment used at cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendentmike overman, “louie would forget to send us a bill.” healso served a term on the county mrDD board and was theboard president.

For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf oftheir son, the hoyngs received the Albert heckler Award at

the staff appreciation banquet in march. the award is giveneach year to a cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service andadvocacy.

“the hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rateadvocates for their son,” overman said. “they rarely evermissed a day spending time with him, and they always spokeup to be sure his needs were being met. they were really spe-cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-gram.”

Brian hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. in theyears after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot aboutpatience, hope, endurance and acceptance. he introduced thehoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outside—but itwas a world where they found welcome and acceptance.

“We met some wonderful people during our years at cherylAnn,” Dorothy hoyng said. “they worked their hearts outhelping us with Brian.”

Dorothy and Louis Hoyng

celina rotary Dog Park Dedicated

BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL opening day at the celina rotary Dog Park received

rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the firsttime on tuesday may 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced inarea. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs haveover 2 acres. the new park, which is one of newest andbiggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns, rotary club President. her friend, Darlene lynskey, is alsoworking on getting a State Dog Park in her home town ofSt. marys. the two dog lovers along with many volunteersworked many hours with the help of the State and craigmorton, who is the regional manager of Grand lake St.marys. together they cleared away debris from the previ-ously unused land. the Park is located at the end of WestBank road

Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of thecelina rotary club’s major donation and businesses as wellas individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-tions. the idea came to her after visiting another dog park.At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of thepeople who made the park possible. Jeff larmore, Pastrotary President and celina city council member spokeas his 150 pound newfoundland, Bentley checked out thepark. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor ofthe recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for severaldays. craig morton, regional manager of State Park Gandlake St. marys and John hunter, Assistant chief of theDivision of Parks and recreation also spoke at the dedica-tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wiselessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few ofwhich were: never leave home without your leach andyour iD. if you stare at someone long enough, you will getwhat you want. last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not areal kiss.

immaculate conception School would like to honor Barb Phares as the volunteer of the month for march. Barb has served as the chairperson of the Pto’s semi-annual pizza, sub, and burrito sales for the past ten years. She began working with the pizza sales when her oldest son, Sam, was in kindergarten, and took over as the chairper-son a year later. She has done an outstanding job of organizing every step of the sales from order blanks to ordering materials to organizing the labor on the day of the sale. She sees it as a way she can give back to the school. Working at the sale has been a great way to get to know other parents and get more involved in

the parish. Phares has served as an ex-

tension educator for 4-h youth Development for the past 29 and one half years, 25 of those years for the ohio State university extension. She is the county

director for the extension. She and her husband Kent have been married for 29 years, and they are the parents of two children. Sam is a freshman at celina high School and rebecca is a sixth grader at immaculate con-ception School.

The Emperor of All Maladies

By: Siddhartha Mukherjee Cancer; the word strikes fear in the

soul of anyone who hears the diagno-sis. It is a disease that is responsible for 1 in 4 deaths in the United States, killing approximately 1500 individuals every day. By a physician who can also write, “The Emperor of All Maladies”, is a biography of this evil.

It may have started with Hippocrates in 400 BC, when the word karkinos, Greek word for crab, first appeared in medical literature. Another term onkos, described as a mass or load, but more commonly a burden, was from which oncology would take its name. But as early as 2500 BC, an Egyptian papyrus reports a case of a “bulg-ing mass in the breast” of which therapy is none. In 1847, a German researcher collaborating his work with that of a Scottish physician renamed a baffling blood illness; leuke-mia. Scientists, researchers and doctors have been searching for a cure for over 4000 years. And yes, they have made sub-stantial progress. Reading “The Emperor of All Maladies” made me realize just how far we have come in this war.

This book is not the story of intellectuals moving from one institution and lab to another. It is the story of patients who struggled and survived, only to move to another ill-ness. It is the story of how medicine has progressed from one trial to another. Using the best knowledge at the time, undoubtedly experimental procedures were performed when that was the accepted therapy. Only when a different method proved better, was the protocol changed. And anyone who succumbed to a procedure was a hero in his own rite. Every treatment, every surgery, and each injection advanced the ranks and would help save lives in the future. And admit it or not, that was the essential mission.

The good news is that changes from the early 1990s through 2006 have occurred, year after year after year. It is estimated that over this period of time, 767,000 deaths from cancer have been avoided. If that’s your daughter, son, husband, wife, friend or loved one it is ENORMOUS success! Battles can be won, but we may need to redefine victory. At the Stand Up To Cancer telethon last fall, a cancer survivor/athlete said this is the only game where if you tie you win. And as long as medical advances continue, we are winning. When trudging through the scary, foreign world of cancer, patients and researchers alike encounter unknown territories. “The Emperor of All Maladies” explores some of those routes taken.

Recommended by O magazine as one of the top ten non-fiction titles of 2010, I can attest that this is a book filled with information. But intertwined with facts are stories. There’s Carla, Germaine, and little Einar; known openly as Jimmy. How publicity, political issues and other diseases helped raise funding and national attention is addressed. Anyone interested in medical history and the advances made over the last centuries will find this book astounding. It reads like a crime novel with a villain, multiple detectives on the trail and a cast of thousands who continue to fight long after the last page is finished. You can find “The Emperor of All Maladies” with the new nonfiction 616.994 MUK. Read it with an appreciation of the champions that have been waging this battle for centuries. Georgia

Note the villages on the Lake Erie and Western Railroad Track in 1880.

This 1880 railroad map of Ohio tracks the rail-road of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad (LE & W) across Mercer County. The Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton (CH & D) is on the planning board, but not completed. The old Cincinnati Northern Railroad, which did not arrive at Saint Henry until December 1883, is not identified on this 1880 map.

Transportation routes often influence the estab-lishment and/or growth of a village. The intersection of transportation routes, increases the probability of establishment and growths of villages. Rockford, (Shanes Crossing) is an excellent example of this theory. One 1755 map of the Northwest Territory marked the site of Shanes Crossing as “Half Way Cross,” on that transpor-tation route of the Saint Marys River. U.S. 33, and St. Rt. 118 and 117 now intersect the Village of Rockford, even though the Saint Marys River is no longer a major trans-portation route across northern Mercer County.

The theory that settle-ments along railroads always grow, is not always true. Look at the 1880 map and see the village names and you can test this theory yourself.

F i r s t , look at the Jay County, Indiana, side of the map, and see the name of Lancas ter . L a n c a s t e r was plat-ted in 1839 at the head waters of the Sa lamonia River. In 1852, the post office was established, and the village name was changed to Salamonia. This com-munity has not grown into a major city.

The next site on the LE & W Railroad is the Village of Recovery, also located on the Wabash River, and St. Rt. 49, and this village grew. St. Joseph and Philothea are the next villages on the LE & W Railroad, but those villages have continued as small villages. Coldwater is the next village and

Coldwater has grown, and it is also located on the intersection of St. Rt. 118 and St. Rt. 219. Celina is the next site on the LE & W Railroad. Celina

has grown to a city, and is now the Mercer County seat. The city is also located on the inter-section of U.S. 127 and U.S. 29. Celina was founded in 1834 on the early trans-p o r t a t i o n route of the reservoir as a part of the

Miami and Erie Canal transportation system.

Blenheim, next village to be noted on the LE & W Railroad, presents a mystery. Blenheim Railroad Station stood east of Celina, at the inter-section of Riley Road, between Rt. 29 and Rt. 703. By the 1900 Map of Mercer County, this rail-road station was known as Reservoir Station. Now, here is a real puzzle: The United States Post Office listed the Reservoir Post

Office as being established June 4, 1856, and dis-continued July 10, 1863. Then, the Reservoir Post Office was re-established April 14, 1871, and dis-continued October 17, 1884. (There was never a post office with the name of Blenheim at this site.) The presence of the railroad did not influ-ence Blenheim to become a large village.

After leaving Mercer County, the LE & W Railroad continues to Saint Marys. The LE & W Railroad travels to the next major city, Lima, Ohio, which was a rail-road center, as early as 1880.

Thus, the theory that the railroad’s arrival at villag-es resulted in an increase in business as well as population, is not always true. Blenheim, Mercer County, lost somewhere in Mercer County’s past history, proves this point, better than any commu-nity in the county.

What’s happening around the Fort…….

Jerry and Lucy Laux celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary on April 10, with a few of their friends at the Orchard Tree in Celina. Jerry and Lucy were married on April 11, 1981, at Mary Help of Christians Church in Fort Recovery.

Mrs. Shelly Vaughn has been elected to take over Mr. Pat Niekamp’s position as Superintendent of Fort Recovery Schools. Mrs.Vaughn has served as the elementary principal for several years.

St. Peter Neurological Center’s winning number for the week was 755 won by Eugene Bruns from Burkettsville.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: There is a new SCAM going around the area. As a word of caution, beware of a phone call such as the following:

The caller will say that they are with the security depart-ment of the credit card company that you hold a credit card with. They have your number and your address and ask you to verify it. They tell you that they are investigating a charge that has been made to your credit card in an amount between $295-$495. They will tell you what the item is and give you a name of a company in another state and ask you if you have made this purchase. You say no. They then will tell you that they will credit your account with the charge in the next few statements. They will gain your confidence by giving you a 1-800 number of the security department of your credit card company and give the persons badge number that is making the call. At the end of the conversation they will ask you to verify that you still have your card in hand and that you really are the person that holds the card. Hear is the trick…. They will ask you to give them the three number security code on the back of your credit card. DO NOT GIVE THE THREE NUMBER SECURITY CODE. You are asked for this many times if you order things over the internet or mail order. This is fine as long as you know who you are doing business with. If you receive a call like this, check by calling the credit card company yourself.

If you have something of interest to the readers of the Fort Notes, please send pictures and information to [email protected].

UNTIL NEXT WEEK REMEMBER: Be happy, love one another and remember that there is a miracle out there that can change your life.

the celina Police Department served a search warrant upon a residence located at 311 S. main Street in rockford Friday afternoon. the warrant ordered officers to search for items believed to have been purchased through fraudulent credit card transactions. upon service of the warrant, officers located four major appliance items that were the subject of the search warrant. those items were removed from the home and seized by Celina Police officers. they included a side-by-side refrigerator, gas range, dishwasher and microwave/range exhaust unit. All the items were Whirlpool brand with a stainless steel finish. total value of the recovered property is approximately $6300.

Celina officers were assisted by a celina Public Works crew and the

rockford Police Department during service of the warrant. the resident of the home, Jennifer K. Brandt, 40, was taken into custody by the mercer county Sheriff’s Office on a Grand Jury indictment for theft, (F-3), that was issued from a case presented by the celina Police Department this week. the case revolves around the suspect’s employment with the victim company, new

Source management, llc, of celina. During the course of her employment with new Source management, Brandt is suspected of embezzling funds in excess of $100,000, which includes the value of the appliances seized. She is currently being held in the mercer county Adult Detention Facility and is expected to appear in mercer county common Pleas court next week.

Suspect arrested and items seized(Continued from Page 1)students, Amanda Lochtefeld, Gina Heitkamp, and Isaac Wilker for participating in the Mercer County Right to Life Oratory Contest and to Ashley Roeckner for receiving this year’s $1,000 Touchstone Achievement Scholarship. The high school and elementary also recently held safety week, which was very successful, as all students were flexible to accommodate to the drills by taking them very seriously. In other action, the high school drama club recently performed the school play, “The Cow Tippers,” which did a wonderful job entertaining the crowd. Lastly, the St. Henry Bank sponsored an assembly with former NFL star, Shawn Harper, about motivational goals to the junior high and

high school. Following this,

superintendent Doug Karst presented the BOE with various motions. Karst discussed that the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department wanted to use the school’s buildings to give training for their drug dogs. Karst noted that he would be in contact with the Sheriff’s Department to begin this training within the school grounds. Along with this, the Board approved a new contract with Perry Corporation to buy new copy machines. In the long run, these machines will save approximately $16,400 over the course of the machines. A motion is also in the process to move a handicap preschool from Cheryl Ann Schools to the elementary building, in order to accommodate with the amount of time students were travelling the bus.

In other action, the BOE approved the retirement of Deb Nelson, after teaching for

33 years. Along with this, the resignations were accepted of Jackie Winner as Junior High Assistant Volleyball Coach, Kristi Klosterman as Head Swimming Coach, and Tim Goodwin as Weight Room Coordinator, Dean of Students, High School Math Teacher, Boys’ Faculty Manager, and Varsity M Club Advisor. Certified and non-certified employees were granted contracts at their designated steps of pay scales. Ted Heitkamp was approved a two-year contract as Transportation Supervisor, Cindy Moeder was approved a two-year contract as Food Supervisor, and Sue Bruns was approved as a one-year Special Ed Supervisor. Jay Homan was hired as Groundskeeper on an as-needed basis, while Karen Bruggeman was approved to increase hours as a cook.

The meeting concluded as the BOE met in executive session.

Grand Lake Patriots plan meetings and mayoral debate

Discussion begun during the rockford Village council safety committee meeting continued at the regular April 5 council meeting regarding the removal of the stop sign at the corner of Buckeye and Parkway Streets at the northeast corner of the Parkway School property. the sign has been taken down and will be kept down for the rest of the school year when council will re-evaluate the situation.

there was disagreement regarding taking down the sign and the fact that some felt the decision had not been properly communicated and, that, in the future, the public should be made aware of what is changing several weeks in advance. A motion passed to put up 25 mph signs on both streets, and committee head ron Searight will be discussing 10 mph signs,

a crosswalk and speed bumps with Superintendent Puthoff.

mayor Amy Joseph, who chaired the meeting in the absence of Village Administrator Jeff long, read congratulations from the Arbor Day Foundation to rockford on being named a tree city uSA community for 2010 and reported that Governor Kasich had declared April as Safe Digging month to remind ohio’s residents that calling 811 is required before digging to avoid damaging the growing number of underground pipelines, wires and cables. the colonial nursing center has asked the council to recognize national nursing home week in may.

in other business, council approved the payment of bills in the amount of $35,028.78 submitted by the finance

committee which will be meeting in the near future to discuss budget issues. the service committee announced may 7 from 10 a.m. to noon is rockford clean-up Day. now that the weather is nicer, rockford police will be cracking down. Warnings have been served regarding removal of trash and junk, and citations will be issued for noncompliance.

the safety committee reported it had met to discuss Front Street parking plans, emergency entrance signs to be posted at the firehouse, a community helping community program and a neighborhood Watch program. mayor Joseph will get with chief may regarding the latter. Also reported was that the rockford Area Development corporation (rADc) membership drive

is underway. the splash pad board will meet April 25 at 6:30, RADC officers at 7 and the full rADc at 7:30.

In old business, Greg Pontsler of the public utilities committee reported just two shutoffs for non-payment of utility bills. “the new procedure seems to be working,” he said. chief of Police may said he is keeping in contact with the manager and owner of the trailer court on the west edge of town. no recent problems have been reported. in an item of new business, J & B equipment will be removing a house and trailer on its property and will be asking for re-zoning to extend its parking lot.

the next council meeting will be April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the rockford Village hall. the rules committee will meet prior to that at 6:30.

IT’S HERE

one day when i was very young and inexperienced, i did not distinguish the difference between salt and sugar. i can still recall the disappointment of tasting about four spoonfuls of salt on my cheerios rather than sugar. my salt/sugar shock is similar to those i have had recently when i walked outside wearing my April jacket and was greeted with biting winds and snow flurries rather than sun and gentle breezes. i was outside Saturday afternoon at 2:59 when i felt it. the weatherman had been talking about a front coming up from the south for a day or two, but i had become a little skeptical about this spring stuff actually happening this year. i was trying to hit a few shag golf balls about 75 yards with my 9 iron when i noticed it. i do not know what the exact temperature was but at that exact time, the first batch of warm humid air finally made it up from the Gulf of mexico to my castle and surrounding farmland.

i do not need robins, flowers, or ground hogs to mark the actual arrival of spring. i simply trust the first arrival of that damp southern air. the warm humidity is very welcome now, but will be the subject of constant complaints by most come August. i, however, enjoy the humidity even in the mid-summer months. Being in the heat and humidity on occasion without air conditioning reminds me of those summers in ohio when i was a youth and every day was a new adventure. At the risk of focusing a little too extensively on young mr. corey luebke, our sole mercer county native presently playing in the major leagues, i offer the following update. As of April 10, corey has pitched in three games

and his performance has been nothing short of outstanding. in three games he has pitched 5 and 1/3 innings and despite the minimal innings, he is the leader of the Padres staff with 8 strike-outs. he has given up only one hit in his three outings, a ball which did not make it back to the pitching mound. his erA is a respectable 3.86, but that figure is misleading. the two earned runs that were attributed to him occurred in his second outing. corey, after a strikeout with runners on second and third, gave up an intentional walk, and a swinging bunt hit. Another reliever permitted both runners to later score.

to date, corey has done exactly what the Padres have expected of him. he had two short outings where he saw three batters each time. his third outing last Friday was in the long relief role. corey entered the game in the second and pitched four innings without surrendering a hit. in the preseason evaluation of his team, Padre manager Bud Black mentioned corey could be used in a relief role as a long and short man. Black also said Corey was in the mix as a fifth or spot starter. i am sure corey would not mind getting the call to complete the third part of the manager’s job description. Fortunes can change fast in pro sports, but let’s hope first impressions are lasting for Black and the decision makers at San Diego. Since most of us will not be traveling to the West coast or even cincinnati to watch the pros play baseball, i should note that high school mAc conference games start this week. the price is right and the locations are convenient. there may be another corey luebke type pitcher on the mound somewhere in the county this spring.

(Continued from Page 1)be potty trained needs to be kept in diapers. For the child who is ready, you know the one that sits on the potty and as soon as he gets up, he makes a mess, black him out. If the child asks for his sippy cup, say no honey you can’t have it until you go on the potty. Or, if the child wants his stuffed animals, say no, they stay on the top of the refrigerator until you go on the potty.

When do you discipline? You discipline when it becomes a moral issue. Boys love to wrestle,

but when it moves from horsing around to hurting each other then it is a moral issue and the parent needs to discipline. Or, when the parent says “please stop” and the child does not, then it becomes a moral issue.

If you are having trouble with your child, for the next 3 weeks act exactly like your child to your best friend and employer. What would happen to you? You’d probably lose a friend and get fired from your job. Is this what you want for your child? Then Dr. Ray says you need to discipline.

Discipline without love is harsh. Love without discipline is child abuse because eventually the child will be abused by the world. The world will crush them. Every child will be disciplined. If you don’t do it, someone else will, like a judge, landlord, army officer, employer, or lawyer.

Dr. Ray has written many books including “You’re a Better Parent Than You Think!” and “Good Discipline, Great Teens” giving many more ideas and tips for parents.
