    The Master of Business Leadership (MBL) provideshighly proessional management development atpostgraduate level with particular emphasis on the theoryas well as the practice o management. It also ofers anopportunity or the development o leadership qualities.

    WHAT IS THE MBL?

    The MBL is a highly proessional, three-year, postgraduatemanagement development programme, which is ofered ona largely distance learning platorm. This distributed learning

    model oers a special learning opportunity and a uniquesel-development programme to graduates who want toollow management careers in the business and public sectors.

    Its unique structure incorporates contact with academics,group and individual work, and multimedia interactionthrough an electronic delivery system (eds online) enhancingthe learning experience. The economic environment o theorganisation, the unctions o the organisation and theintegrated concepts o strategy and leadership are the mainelds o study which are integrated into the MBL. The firsttwo years o study deliver a broad spectrum o both theoryand practice which covers aspects o management romthe operational level through general management andculminates in strategic management and leadership.

    During the nal year, the student will have the opportunity to

    integrate the learning experience through a compulsory yearmodule: executive project management that includes a eldstudy project and a research report. In addition, during thenal year, advanced studies in certain modules are presentedas an elective.

    During the period o enrolment in the programme, studentswill have had the opportunity to apply learning experiencesboth personally and within their work environment.

    The resulting master's degree equips the student or ameaningul top management role in business, public andprivate sectors and other organisations.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    In order to be considered or admission to the programme,

    students must: Hold a three-year recognised Bachelor's degree with 360

    SAQA credits

    Have had at least three years managerial experience, toensure that they can contribute meaningully to groupdiscussions, assignments and the study schools

    HOW IS THE MBL STRUCTURED?

    The study period is three years and the programme is basedon a combination o theoretical and applied content.

    The first two years consist o compulsory core modules. Thefinal year ofers the opportunity to integrate all learningexperiences through a research project, an executive projectmanagement module and one elective module.

    The distributed distance learning element comprisessel-tuition and group work in which the student mustdo both prescribed and recommended reading, completeassignments, and contribute to group activities. Attendanceat the compulsory study schools and group meetings givestudents an opportunity to network with ellow students andto interact with academics.

    Open book examinations will be written during October/November.

    STUDY SCHOOLS

    All study schools are held in Midrand. Attendance iscompulsory. Students will be advised about the venues wellin advance.

    Students are responsible or their own accommodation, travelarrangements and expenses incurred while attending thestudy schools.

    Interactive study groups

    Each student is allocated to a study group comprising five ormore members in a specific geographical area. In exceptionalcases a group o less than five students may be allowed withthe permission o the Programme Delivery Manager. Groupmembers meet on a weekly basis or interactive study andthe preparation o group assignments. These sessions usuallylast a ew hours. International students as well as studentsresiding in remote areas will be allocated to virtual groups,which will unction largely by using electronic media such asthe eds online, e-mail, Internet, ax and telephone.

    ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS

    Assignments contribute 24% towards the final mark permodule. The tests are written during May at approved Unisaexamination centres and contribute 16% towards the finalmark. In all the modules, the weight o the year mark is 40%and that o the written examination 60%.

    EXAMINATIONS

    Examinations consist o one our-hour open-bookexamination per module. Each module contributes 60%per module towards the final mark. Examinations will bewritten during October and November at centres designatedby Unisa. Examination eligibility will be according to the rulesand procedures applicable to the MBL.

    Students will be required to adhere to the Unisa examinationtimetable as well as the designated Unisa examination centres.

    Students may be required to write more than one moduleper day during the exam period.

    ELECTRONIC DELIVERY SYSTEM (eds online)

    The programme delivery will occur via eds online, which canbe accessed via www.sbleds.ac.za.

    Study material and contact with the SBL, academics andellow students are provided through eds online, 24 hours aday. All study guides and other material supplied by the SBLare available through eds online.

    Assignments are submit ted electronica lly. Students willwork on common projects, share ideas, inormation andunderstanding, and create new ideas or solutions. Studentscan use eds online to interact with their own groups andalso with other students, groups and academics. Using edsonline means that distance between students, members otheir group and the SBL becomes irrelevant.

    Requirements: eds online

    Students will be required to have access to a computer and theinternet with Microsot Oce, Adobe Reader, Internet Explorer7 or higher or Fireox or Saari.

    In the interests o speed o contact, quality o delivery, and odeveloping a truly computer literate manager, all students arestrongly encouraged to make use o eds online.

    Language Medium

    Prescribed material is available in English. Students shouldsubmit assignments and do examinations in English. Thelanguage medium or study schools is English.

    APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

    Application or admission must be made rom October eachyear. The closing date or applications is during December o thesame year. No late applications will be considered. Successulstudents will be notified by e-mail not later than end oFebruary o the ollowing year.

    The application orm is included in this brochure or visit theSBL website: www.sblunisa.ac.za. A clear photocopy o theorm can be used. The application orm must be completed,signed and accompanied by the required documents as set outin section 31 A-I o the application orm. All correspondence

    will be done via e-mail. Please ensure that all details are correctlyrecorded on the application orm.

    Once admission is approved, student registration willtake place from December to mid January.

    Study material and required textbooks

    A students registration must be finalised by the administrationo the university beore any textbooks can be issued. Allcompulsory textbooks are supplied upon registration. Studyinormation is only available on the eds online and can beaccessed ater registration is finalised. Instructions on how touse the eds online wil l be sent to you ater registration.

    Adequate progress and re-registration

    For the duration o the students study he/she must re-registerannually beore the stipulated date. Re-registration at the SBLmay be reused in any year on the grounds o inadequateprogress and poor perormance.

    A student must register or all the prescribed modules o theyear o study concerned

    Students ailing three modules or more in the first academicyear will not be allowed to continue with the MBL degree

    Students ailing three or more modules during theirsecond year must register or the outstanding modulesand cannot proceed to the third year unless they complywith the rules as stipulated in the Unisa calendar

    Students are allowed to register or the prescribed moduleso the third year i they do not have more than two modulesoutstanding rom previous years

    A student repeating any module will be required to ollowthe current years curriculum

    Concurrent registration

    Concurrent registration at two or more universities is notpermitted without the permission o all universities.

    Application for exemption

    Exemption rom MBL modules will only be considered ia student has completed modules as part o a master'sdegree at an accredited university. Pre-MBA/MBL and bridgingcourses are not considered or exemptions. Students arerequired to ully complete and submit the application ormand all the required documentation, as well as syllabi andacademic records o the modules passed at master's level.

    Upon completion o the programme, a student will receivethe Master o Business Leadership degree, conerred by the

    University o South Arica.
