Bill Denton We learned of the passing of Bill Denton on July 20, 2014. Bill was a good friend of the Kansas City Section of MBCA as he served several national officer posi-tions in recent years. As Midwest Regional Director, Bill attended our local functions regularly. And, in his most recent office of National Treasurer, he continued to be ac-tive in the KC Sections events. Bill, lived in Oak Brook Illinois and was a member of the Chicagoland Section of MBCA. His passing was very sudden, collapsing while working in his yard. Bills wife Jeannie is in need of our thoughts and prayers during this sad time, too. She recently had knee surgery and later reinjured the knee resulting in more hospitalization.
As of this writing we do not know details of funeral arrangements. Please refer to the national MBCA website at www.mbca.org/bill-denton-memorandum-0 for the most recent information. Condolences can be sent to Jeannie and the family at their home.Address is 23 Concord Dr. Oak Brook IL 60523-1735

Help Wanted!Alright, all you aspiring Journalists!
Here’s a great opportunity to deliver the latest in club news and articles of substance surrounding our favorite Germans, satisfying your need to “get the word out”, and help your local MBCA section at the same time.
MBCA|Kansas City is feverishly searching for its next newsletter editor. The pay sucks, but, the satisfaction of working on the award winning der Benz! newsletter is priceless. Your “labor of love” will be delivered to over 300 eager readers every other month.
Please consider giving back to the club, and serving as Editor of der Benz!Contact [email protected] for more information.
Greetings Benz Friends,
As I write this, the board and I are making the final preparations for our Defensive Driving and Autocross event on August 2nd. We have also learned that Bill Denton, the national treasurer for MBCA and a good friend to our section has passed away suddenly. I know Bill was looking forward to attending our event again this year, we will miss him greatly.
This month we include a ballot for our annual election of officers and board members. It’s the boards responsibility to plan and organize the events we enjoy every year. Some events, like the DD/AX take a lot of effort, others much less. There are multiple vacancies on the board, and we could use your help. When you get your ballot, consider adding your name to the board.
When it comes to event planning, we try to include a variety of social, driving and other car related activities to include everyone. Which activities do you enjoy the most? Would you like more driving events like the DD/AX? Do you enjoy showing that special car to others at our annual Oktoberfest Concours D’Elegance? Is there some way that we could change
some of the events we currently have to make them better? The board and I would like your feedback. If you can take a moment and tell us what you think.
This issue of Der Benz marks the last issue for our esteemed editor, Bob Smith. For many years Bob has worked hard to provide us with an award winning newsletter. On behalf of a grateful board, thank you Bob for all you have done.
Paradise Diner !Our new First-Saturday
Meeting PlaceBeginning with the September membership breakfast, our new meeting location will be the Paradise Diner, 5501 W 135th St. Overland Park Kansas. The Paradise Diner is connected and shares the kitchen with the Newport Grill at the same location. We will actually be seated in the Newport Grill which is normally closed during the morn-ing hours. Our menu will be the breakfast items from the Paradise Diner.
Thanks to Bob DelPopolo for recommending it and to Dud-ley and Joyce Smith for making the arrangements.

For the July Sunday Drive our group took a short loop through southern Johnson county and enjoyed nice sunny weather. After our drive, we arrived at the new Kansas City Automotive Museum. There were twelve of us in our group and we were given a guided tour of the collection. The museum is dedicated to the automotive history of Kansas City.

In addition to the collection of cars on display many interesting displays of locally significant automotive history, including the many different models of cars and trucks that have been produced in Kansas City. After touring the museum the group headed over to the Old Chicago restaurant nearby for a late lunch.

ALetterFromtheEditorBy Bob Smith
In the previous issue and again this issue of der Benz! a want ad for a newsletter editor is included. I am stepping down as editor after handling the task for six years. It was a great job and I assure the new editor that I will help in the transition of duties. Maybe this would be a good time to make a few improvements in the look and style of der Benz!. Otherwise, I have been very satisfied with the content and writing by those who contribute news and information. This is the first editor’s column I’ve written since my first issue in the fall of 2008. However, I have written quite a few feature articles about club events, and I have contributed an abundance of photographs of events and people. The editor is not required to attend each and every event, but should go to as many as possible. If I can’t make it, I just ask those attending to fill me in on the interesting things that went on and send some photos to me. I bring my camera and try to get photos that will give a feel for what the event is all about. I find that many Benz enthusiasts also have interest in photography, and they love to provide photos of their activities in the MBCA.
Here is some information about the position. The software and PC goes with the job. It is Adobe InDesign CS2, PhotoShop CS2 and Windows Office running on Windows XP professional. The system was refurbished about two years ago and it has performed very well since. The PC has no connection to the internet which makes it more secure from viruses and malware. Data is transferred via a memory stick. A black & white version of der Benz! in PDF form is sent to the printing firm through its website. They print about 300 copies and mail them to the membership. Another 150 copies are distributed by a club member to the Mercedes-Benz dealers and the other advertisers to stock their reading racks. A color PDF version is sent to the club webmaster who posts it on the Kansas City Section website, kcmbca.org. Charges for Printing, advertising and ads are handled by the club treasurer. So, as editor, you don’t have to worry about revenue and bills.
If you are interested in the job, please contact club president Mark Moody. His contact information is in the want ad on page 2. Also, I will be glad to try and answer your questions about how all this is done and will do all I can to help you get started.

Mercedes-Benz Club STAR® Magazine Wins Record 18 Medals AtInternational Automotive Media Competition
Press Release from MBCA, July 3, 2014 Colorado Springs, CO — For the fifth consecutive year, the International Automotive Media Competition (IAMC), an awards program that recognizes excellence in all forms of automotive media, has awarded bronze, silver and gold medals to The Star® magazine, the official magazine of Mercedes-Benz Club of America. The Star received more gold medals than any other media outlet in the competition.
The 23rd annual International Automotive Media Competition presented awards for works published from January 1-December 31, 2013. Entries were judged by a panel of experts whose backgrounds include academia, professional auto racing, public relations and automotive fine arts; among other disciplines.
Eighteen medals were awarded to The Star’s editor and content contributors in the categories of magazine writing, graphics and best single/special issue. “I am delighted that so many of our writers and photographers received medals for their work,” reported Gary Anderson, Editor-in-Chief of The Star. “Several of them have been aligned with the Mercedes-Benz brand and the automotive industry for decades and their in-depth reporting reflects that. Others, like Matthew Crawford — a member of MBCA’s Desert Stars Section in Scottsdale, Arizona — is not a journalist, but his knowledge about Mercedes-Benz engineering and his enthusiasm for the Club showed through in his article about removing yellowing from headlights; earning him a silver medallion,” Anderson added.
Gold medals were awarded to Mr. Anderson, Karl Ludvigsen, Graham Robson, Richard Simonds (past National President of MBCA), Stephan McKeown (The Star designer), and Royce Rumsey (photographer for the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center). Silver medallions were presented to Messrs. Crawford, Anderson, McKeown, Robson and Ted Zombeck. Messrs. McKeown, Zombeck, Anderson and Anderson’s wife Genie, Associate Editor of The Star, also received Bronze medals.
