LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

June 12-Report Cards Mailed

From the Desk of the Principal

Puma Families,

I know that I wrote the staff not too long ago, talking about the unspoken feeling about

the end of the school year. My message was to finish strong and stay focused. The expec-tation at school is that we continue as usual all the way to the end. Each day should be

meaningful and each moment should be viewed as an important learning opportunity.

The message for “finishing strong” is an important one for students too. I likened the mes-

sage to one of running a race. If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to participate in a race, then you know that a strong finish to the race helps to motivate you to run another

one. Your mind already begins to prepare for “what it’s like next time” and you think about how you can improve.

That’s how I’d love for students to feel about the purpose to ending this year by “finishing strong.” Students can think about how they can improve and ensure a successful feeling

this year to grow confidence about next year.

To look back about what they’ve accomplished and we’ve accomplished this year, it’s been

tremendous. You and the staff were nervous about having a new principal and I was confi-dent about this year, but I knew there would be a lot of change and the transition would

be hard. What I found is an impressive community that loves their kids and their school. The impact of the accomplishments of this year can only be measured by the people our

children become. But since, each teacher lesson, conversation, musical, PTA event, student or staff recognition, meeting, and so forth are all done with heart and in the right of

“what’s best for kids”, what we did helped a student grow.

Because so much good for the “right of kids” has occurred, we all owe it to ourselves, each

other, and of course the children to “finish strong.” That way, we’ve set each other up for a strong return to do it again.

With heart and Puma Pride, Mr. Thiessen

the acting administrative intern through the close of this school year. I am a retired Loudoun Coun-

ty principal who most recently led Horizon Elementary from 1999-2011. Prior to my assignment at

Horizon, I served as the principal of three Loudoun County schools. I have met several parents since

my arrival at Pinebrook and look forward to meeting many more. Thank you for making me feel

welcome.

Breakfast/Lunch Accounts

The end of the year is quickly approaching. Beginning May

16th, students will no longer be able to charge their breakfast or

lunch. An automated message will be sent for all students who

owe money on their account. Please be sure to take care of any

balances before June 6th. If you have any questions regarding

your child’s breakfast/lunch account, you can contact the cafeteria by

calling the office at 703-957-4325.

Bucket Day a Huge Success

Teachers Makin’ Tracks would like to thank the Pinebrook parents and students for their generous support of our third annual “Bucket Day”. A total of $528.00 was raised for the American Cancer Society. That is amazing!

We invite all of you to come by Heritage High School on June 1, 2013 to say hello and participate in the many events that will be taking place on relay day. The theme for this year’s relay is Superheroes. Many of you have probably seen our team members wearing our Super Grover tee shirts on Fri-days. We have twenty three Pinebrook teachers and staff members on team Teachers Makin’ Tracks. For more infor-mation on our local event, visit www.westernloudounrelay.org.

It is with grateful hearts and continued optimism that we will walk proudly during this overnight event. Thank you again for your support. Because of you…lives

are saved!

News From the Clinic

Field Day is quickly approaching. A few reminders from the clinic

about field day.

If you want your child to wear sunscreen or bug spray, these need to be

applied at home. Your child’s teacher, staff, and the nurse are not al-

lowed to apply these to your child.

Please remember to provide a ball cap to protect their head from the

sun and a water bottle for extra hydration.

Proper footwear is important. Footwear should cover the toes such as

sneakers. Sandals and flip flops are not allowed.

Send a change of clothes for your child. There are many water activi-

ties during field day and students will get wet.

The last day to pick up medication that has been stored in the clinic is

Friday, June 7th at 2 p.m.. Any medication left after this date will be

discarded.

Parents of students with any health concerns will receive a letter with

instructions about care planning and physician orders for the 2013-

2014 school year

Music News

Dr. Pat Avery and Ms. Sue Correll

By this time of year, we are all

beginning to count down until the end of the

school year! Where has the time gone? Time

seems to move even more quickly as the

months pass. I look at our students and begin

to see how they have grown – physically and

intellectually as well.

As parents begin to plan for summer

activities, please include musical options for

your child. There are many music camps in the

area – opportunities for singing, playing

instruments and creating music. All of these

help your child’s brain develop in a unique way.

Plus it is fun!

Our first grade students will present

their patriotic program on May 13 and 14, 2013.

Plan to attend one of these programs. They will

begin at 6:30 in our Pinebrook Gym.

School Counselors

Melissa Roberts and Joyce Shanholtzer

We are quickly approaching the last months of

school, and it is an important time for our

students. The Virginia Standards of Learning

(SOLs) take place during May. In order to help

your child prepare for the upcoming tests, teach

him or her some of these test taking tips:

1. Get a good night’s sleep the night

before the test and have a healthy

breakfast the morning of the test. You

can think better when you are well-

rested with a full belly!

2. Read the test directions thoroughly and

carefully to make sure you know what is

being asked of you.

3. Don’t get frustrated or upset if you are

not sure of an answer. Relax and take 3

slow, deep breaths. Reread the

question and do your best to solve the

problem. If you are still not sure, move

on to answer the questions you do

know and come back to that one later.

4. Slash the trash! Use the process of

elimination for multiple-choice

questions. Cross out the answers that

you know are not correct and then

focus your time of the possible correct

answers.

5. Don’t rush! Take your time and review

your answers when you are finished.

Rushing can cause careless mistakes.

6. Believe in yourself!!! Remember that

you are smart and you can do this. A

positive attitude can go a long way!

Technology

Jenna Krause

SOL tests are rapidly approaching, and the third,

fourth, and fifth grade students are hard at

work to prepare for the tests! Not only are they

working hard in their classrooms learning new

curriculum and reviewing older concepts, they

are also beginning to practice using the testing

software for testing online. Over the next few

weeks, the students will be practicing using this

software in the computer lab. The students will

become familiar with the look and feel of the

SOL tests, and they will take sample tests to

familiarize themselves with the online tools that

will be provided to them during the tests. They

will also take some practice SOL tests from

previous years using testing software called

EPAT. This practice will not only give them time

to become comfortable with the testing

software, but it also gives them the opportunity

to utilize their test-taking strategies that they

have been learning to use all year. The students

should be proud of their hard work, and come

SOL testing days, they should also feel confident

and ready to take the tests.

Reading Tips for Parents

By: Reading Rockets (2006)

Read about it, talk about it, and think about it!

Find ways for your child to build understanding,

the ultimate goal of learning how to read. The

tips below offer some fun ways you can help

your child become a happy and confident

reader. Try a new tip each week. See what

works best for your child.

Make books special. Turn reading into

something special. Take your kids to the library,

help them get their own library card, read with

them, and buy them books as gifts. Have a

favorite place for books in your home or, even

better, put books everywhere.

Get them to read another one

Find ways to encourage your child to pick up

another book. Introduce him or her to a series

like The Boxcar Children or Harry Potter or to a

second book by a favorite author, or ask the

librarian for additional suggestions.

Crack open the dictionary

Let your child see you use a dictionary. Say,

"Hmm, I'm not sure what that word means... I

think I'll look it up."

Talk about what you see and do

Talk about everyday activities to build your

child's background knowledge, which is crucial

to listening and reading comprehension. Keep

up a running patter, for example, while cooking

together, visiting somewhere new, or after

watching a TV show.

First drafts are rough

Encourage your child when writing. Remind him

or her that writing involves several steps. No

one does it perfectly the first time.

Different strokes for different folks

Read different types of books to expose your

child to different types of writing. Some kids,

especially boys, prefer nonfiction books.

Teach your child some "mind tricks"

Show your child how to summarize a story in a

few sentences or how to make predictions

about what might happen next. Both strategies

help a child comprehend and remember.

"Are we there yet?"

Use the time spent in the car or bus for

wordplay. Talk about how jam means

something you put on toast as well as cars stuck

in traffic. How many other homonyms can your

child think of? When kids are highly familiar

with the meaning of a word, they have less

difficulty reading it.

Accelerated Reader Carnival

The excitement is building for those students who earned participation to the AR Carnival which is being held on May 23, 2013. The participants will rotate through eighteen different stations that include carnival games, moon bounces and two food stations: cotton candy and snow cones.

Parents, please speak with your child about whether he/she is allowed to fully participate in all stations at the carnival. He/she will be responsible to know this information and act accordingly. If you have any concerns, feel free to contact Mr. Thiessen or Mrs. Higgins.

We are in need of numerous parent volunteers for this event. If you can volunteer for one or more sessions, please contact Mrs. Higgins at [email protected] The Carnival schedule is as follows:

Session 1 – 8:15 – 9:45 (All 5th grade, Ms.Davis, Mrs. Turner, Ms. Wright)

Session 2 – 10:00 - 11:30 (All second grade)
