www.themayhew.org 5

Our ambitions for 2014Despite all our achievements in 2013 we face a challenging year in 2014 to ensure we meet our ambitious targets. With your support here’s what we will be striving to achieve this year…

We’ll be busy ensuring that all the animals who find themselves needing our help receive the highest standard of care and rehabilitation.

Helping animals find their forever homes will always be achieved to the highest of standards.

Our community Veterinary clinic will continue to provide free and low cost neutering programmes and other low cost services to benefit animal welfare and the community as a whole.

Outreach programmes (trap neuter & release, pick n’ snip and our work with the homeless and their pets) will be expanded and strengthened to benefit even more communities.

Our work to explore and support the human-animal bond, through our therapaws and pet refuge programmes, will bring happiness to all involved.

We’ll continue to advocate responsible pet ownership.

Our voice will be heard locally and nationally to champion animal welfare acts, policies and issues.

News updateJEANNE MArCHIgIt was with great sadness that we received the news that Jeanne Marchig had passed away on 2nd May 2013. Jeanne was founder of the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust who has given massive support to The Mayhew and Mayhew International and the cause of animal welfare worldwide.

Over the years, the generosity of the Trust has contributed to the construction

CrISIS AT CHrISTMASOver the festive period, our vets, Animal Welfare Officers and volunteers were busy supporting the work of Crisis at Christmas. For more than 15 years we have worked in collaboration with the charity to provide support to homeless people and their dogs at the temporary shelter over the Christmas holiday. Christmas can be an incredibly difficult time of year for a person cut off from family and home, let alone the anxiety of being separated from their dog whilst they visit the Crisis centre and make their first steps out of homelessness. Our team provide assurance, with owners being able to stay with their dog while they are examined and treated, and are on hand to look after their animals while they receive support from the centre.

Marion Garnett, a Mayhew volunteer and columnist for getwestlondon.co.uk spent eight days helping to look after the dogs at the Crisis at Christmas residential

centre and had these kind words to say about our work: “There’s nothing like seeing The Mayhew Animal Home van arrive early in a cold, desolate area on the other side of London during Christmas time, to make you realise the contribution The Mayhew make to animal welfare.”

of our Community Veterinary Clinic, our Trap Neuter and Release Programme, the purchase of our animal ambulance and the development of our International Vet Training Programme.

We are indebted to the work of Jeanne and the Trust for enabling us to fund these achievements.

BArK IN THE PArKIn October our Animal Welfare Officers joined forces with representatives from Brent Council, the Metropolitan Police Service, the RSPCA and Brent Housing Partnership as part of the BARK (Brent Action for Responsible K9s) collaborative programme. Our team set up a mobile service in Gladstone Park to provide free microchipping and were on hand to offer advice and support to dog owners.

PAWS N’ CLAWSOn the 22nd December Ace Café London’s motorcyclists met for their annual Paws n’ Claws motorbike ride to bring us food, toys, treats and bedding for our residents. A huge thank you to all the riders who made the journey from Ace Café London in Stonebridge Wembley to see us in Kensal Green. The dogs and cats awaiting new homes over the holiday season certainly enjoyed meeting all the bikers!

The Mayhew _ Spring 20148

We answer between 60–70 telephone calls on a MondayYou can never be sure what you’ll have to deal with but the most frequently asked question I have to answer is ‘Would you be able to take my animal?’.

The best thing about working at The Mayhew has to be the animalsThe staff are extremely kind to the animals who find themselves needing our help and I’m glad I can be a part of that.

Working here can be challengingDespite my length of time on Reception, it doesn’t get any easier answering distressing phone calls from people who have to give up their animals and are struggling to find someone to take them in. You certainly never get used to seeing an animal who has been neglected or abused.

I first heard about The Mayhew back in 1981

I was the Headmistress at a school in Brent for children

with disabilities. We had always raised funds for the school but I wanted my pupils to have the opportunity to give to other causes, such as an animal charity, like The Mayhew. I’ve continued to be a supporter ever since and started volunteering when I retired.

My role is very variedAs well as welcoming visitors to The Mayhew, I receive calls from members of the public who are concerned about animals in the community, direct pet owners to our clinic for vaccinations and neutering, and liaise with members of staff such as the Animal Welfare Team and Adoption Officers. I work very closely with Joan Dixon, a fellow volunteer and previous trustee, who has tremendous experience relating to The Mayhew and the needs of the animals.

We wouldn’t be able to achieve what we do without the dedication of our team of more than 300 volunteers.

Volunteer Receptionist, Judy Edwards, has been manning the phones every Monday for eight years but started supporting The Mayhew 33 years ago!

Our volunteers

I’ve had so many memorable days working hereThe really good days are when we are able to reunite a lost animal with its owner. It truly is a special moment.

I was honoured to receive a Community Champions Award in MayMy colleagues at The Mahyew nominated me for the award which is hosted by Brent Council each year to recognise volunteering in the community.

I’ve adopted quite a few cats from The Mayhew over the yearsThomas is the most recent addition to my family – a beautiful marmalade cat who loves to eat, sleep, play on the stairs and climb into bags, suitcases and boxes whenever possible .

If I had to sum up The Mayhew in three words they would be: Compassion, kindness and care!

A night at The Mayhew

The Mayhew never sleeps. Our team works around the clock to care for animals who need our help.

We caught up with members of our night staff, the Night Owls and the Night Foxes, to find out more about the rewards and challenges of their work.Just some of the jobs that need doing…

Top, left to right: Night Owls: Taylor West, Gillian Sanchez and Laura Stubbs.

Bottom, left to right: Night Foxes: Emma James, Shauna Naughton and Lauren Bailey.

- discharge patients- Provide post-surgery care advice- scrub and prepare the theatre for the next day’s operations- administer treatments- care for animals in hospital ward and isolation unit- feed kittens, puppies and mums- make sure the animals are settled for bed time (televisions off!)- deal with out-of-hours calls- admit and take care of stray and abandoned animals- Keep on top of the laundry- Be ready for the first dog walks at 5am- hand over to day staff- try to find 5 minutes for a cup of tea!

www.themayhew.org 1 1

WHAT IS THE MOST ENJOYABLE ASPECT OF THE JOB?Lauren: To be a part of making an animal better mentally and physically so that they are in a position to be rehomed is magic! Taylor: Knowing the animals appreciate what we do and being able to give them all of our attention.Gill: It has to be working as a team with such a lovely crew and knowing our hard work with the animals pays dividends in terms of their health, welfare and general happiness.Emma: When an animal has been with us a long time and they finally go off to their forever home. It’s lovely to see!

WHAT IS THE HArDEST PArT OF THE rOLE?Laura: It has to be looking after the welfare cases; when something awful has come in during the day and staff have done all they can to make the animal comfortable. We monitor the animal overnight and try to keep them at ease.Gill: It can be very physical. I’ve dropped three dress sizes since working here!Shauna: When an animal is abandoned or brought to us in a terrible state and knowing that no amount of medical attention, care or love can help will always be the hardest part.Lauren: Trying not to get too attached to the animals! So many of the animals capture my heart and I want to take them all home with me.

IS THErE ANYTHINg YOu HAvE LEArNT THAT YOu DIDN’T ExPECT FrOM THE JOB?Taylor: I really hadn’t expected the volume of animals being dumped on us, healthy or injured, overnight. The response and lack of care from people can be truly heart-breaking to witness.Shauna: I’ve always been good at working in a team, but when you only have two people working with you on a night shift you truly appreciate how important they are. You have to build such a strong bond to get through the emotional challenge of working at night and caring for animals.Emma: What has surprised me the most is the huge misconception about Staffordshire Bull Terriers. It’s people who have given this breed a bad name. There is a belief that staffies are somehow wired wrongly when in fact any dog in the wrong hands is a danger. Laura: I’m surprised at just how much there is to do overnight!

Love at first sight

Famous for loving dogs, the TV star regularly invites a selection of rescue dogs onto his show as part of an adoption appeal to help them find the perfect owner and a new home.

Kayleigh Kilcommons, one of our Animal Care Assistants, was on hand to ensure Bella was well looked after during her TV debut but no one could have foreseen the unlikely turn of events. We knew the adorable Bella would pull on the heartstrings of the audience but before she’d even gone live on air she’d stolen the heart of the celebrity who was due to take her on stage!

In November, we were lucky enough to be invited to appear on the Paul O’grady Show with one of our residents, Bella, a Dogue de Bordeaux puppy who arrrived at The Mayhew because her owner’s dog took a dislike to her.

www.themayhew.org 1 3

Left: Bella, now named Nala, has even appeared in Hello Magazine.

Below: JB took to Twitter to share his excitement.

Former JLS member, JB, was starring as a guest on the show and was chosen to appear with Bella. He met Bella backstage and walked on set with her but when it came to saying goodbye he couldn’t bring himself to leave her!

As you can see from our photographs it certainly was love at first sight. Bella jumped straight in his lap and was very content.

Following the show, JB kept in touch with The Mayhew and went through the formal adoption procedure for Bella. Despite being a celebrity, JB still went through the stringent process and passed all of the necessary checks, including a home visit.

Bella, now named Nala, is very much enjoying her new home with JB and his fiancé Chloe.

Thank you to Paul O’Grady for being a fantastic ambassador for dog rehoming and for bringing JB and Nala together.

Events round-uprOYAL PArKS FOuNDATION HALF MArATHONIn October, a team of runners completed the stunning 13.1 mile autumnal route on behalf of The Mayhew.

The distance was made slightly easier thanks to the picturesque course through four of London’s magnificent Royal Parks and past many of the capital’s world-famous landmarks but we can’t thank our runners enough for the hard training required to complete the distance. Their determination and effort to gain sponsorship from family, friends and colleagues raised a staggering £11,840.69!

CHILDrEN’S HALLOWEEN PArTYWe celebrated everything spooky with our amazing Halloween party and fancy dress competition. Our ghoulish games, creepy crafts, ghastly ghost trail, frighteningly fun games, spooky stories and ‘revolting’ refreshments raised £2,085.90! A big thank you to all our young supporters who made it such a fun day!

THE MAYHEW CHrISTMAS FAIrOur Christmas Fair really ensured we all got into the festive spirit as we held it right here at The Mayhew. It was lovely to have so many visitors, including a few ex-Mayhew residents! A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the day. Together we raised more than £4,000 which well and truly surpasses our previous year’s total.

Thanks to all our supporters and sponsors!

TINSEL AND TAILSAn unbelievable £12,000 was raised at our glamorous Tinsel and Tails event. The annual Christmas fundraiser didn’t fail to impress with its sparkling wine reception, delicious vegan buffet, live music, readings and luxury auction. Guests were greeted on the red carpet by happily rehomed canine residents of The Mayhew before being treated to a night of star-studded entertainment with an exclusive performance from singer songwriter Elsie and readings from Marc Abraham, The Barking Blondes, Sue Jameson and Zara Boland. Thank you to everyone involved for making it such a memorable evening.

Q I worry that my cat is bored when I leave him alone by himself all day…should I get him a friend?

A Cats are solitary by nature and don’t tend to live in packs in the wild, as canine species do. While they may seem bored or lonely by our definition, don’t forget cats are nocturnal creatures and it is completely normal for a cat to waste the day away snoozing on the armchair!

Thinking that your cat needs a friend to keep him company may just disrupt his regular routine which is very important to cats. Instead, try introducing activities for him to do while you’re out at work.

You can leave dry food scattered in various locations for him to forage, stuff some biscuits into a rolled up bit of paper or empty toilet roll, or try a puzzle feeder which will keep him entertained while also rewarding him with tasty food at the end.

Make use of vertical spaces to make his home more interesting by putting up shelves or investing in a tall cat tree that he can lounge on and view his domain from.

Toys that can be played with on their own, such as the ball-in-a-track toy can be left for your kitty to enjoy but also remember to indulge in play with your furry friend when you get home, as this strengthens your bond and also keeps your cat active.

And if you’re out all day and your cat doesn’t have access to the outdoors, consider fitting a catflap so he can go off on his adventures, remembering to lock it at night to keep your cat safe during the twilight hours.

However, if you think your cat would really like a furry friend, visit your local rescue centre (The Mayhew, for those readers who live nearby!) and take their advice. They will know the cats and kittens in their care and can advise you on who would make the best companion for your puss.

Campaigns updateCHArLES AND CHELSEAWe are sure you will be delighted to hear the two Shih-Tzu puppies, Charles and Chelsea, who featured in our Boxing Day e-newsletter have now found their forever homes.

Charles and Chelsea were only three months old when they arrived at The Mayhew as unwanted presents just days before Christmas. We were all saddened but not surprised by their arrival. Despite the well-known message that animals are not objects to be given away as gifts it continues to be an issue every year in animal rescue centres all over the country.

PEPPErWe have been running an advertising appeal featuring Pepper, a young Jack Russell/Chihuahua X, who arrived at The Mayhew in a terrible state. Little Pepper was so severely malnourished,

Fortunately Charles and Chelsea’s story has a happy ending and they are now settled in loving homes.

her tiny body covered in sores, she hardly had the energy to stand and didn’t want to come out from under her blanket.

Although the story and images of Pepper are shocking and upsetting, such appeals help us to highlight the terrible cases we deal with on a regular basis and ensure our vital work can continue.

After a short stay at The Mayhew and plenty of care from our team, Pepper was able to go up for adoption. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for Pepper to be snapped up!

www.themayhew.org 2 1

AvErSIvE TrAININg COLLArSIn December we launched a campaign calling for a total ban on the use of aversive training collars. The support was overwhelming with more than 3,000 people signing our petition against their cruel use.

Our appeal featured a German Shepherd, Mitch, who was brought to The Mayhew after being found in a park tethered to a tree by a prong collar. These prong and shock collars are often used as a training method by means of inflicting pain on the dog to modify behaviour. They not only cause serious physical injuries but can also cause emotional trauma to the dog.

With treatment and lots of love and care Mitch was able to have his second chance at happiness but our fight to ban the use of ‘training collars’ continues.

Sign our petition at: www.themayhew.org/trainingcollars

thank you to everyone who has supported our campaigns! your donations, time and commitment to the mayhew allow us to achieve what we do.

In addition to our lovely Adopted and Loved stories on pages 24 and 25 we thought we would share with you the beautiful story of an ex-resident who now finds herself living in Canada!

Hello MayhewI just thought I would send you a quick update about our rescue

dog ‘Fortune’ who we got from yourselves in December 2008. We have since renamed her ‘Holly’ as we did get her at Christmas! These days Holly lives in Vancouver, Canada, her greatest adventure

yet. Don’t worry she coped with the flight better than we did and jumped out of the crate as if nothing had happened. She was already on first name terms with the airport staff when we picked her up.

Holly would like to thank The Mayhew Animal Home for looking after her while she was waiting for her new family and finding her such a great home.Jo, Howard and Holly x

It’s a wonderful life

How Holly looked when we got her. Holly didn’t waste any time in making new friends at the local park, though she had to ‘convince’ some of them to share their toys…

She’s a very cheeky girl who knows how to make herself at home and LOVES having her belly rubbed...

www.themayhew.org 2 3

She is also a very keen swimmer…

But it’s not all play, sometimes she has to go to work…

And generally likes getting wet...

OK, so it is all play, but even at work she knows how to make herself at home…

Don’t get me wrong, we do proper dog stuff with her too, she even does what she is told, sometimes...

What the pictures don’t show is me trying to bribe her with a bit of sausage off camera!

She has her own waterfall two minutes from where we live and the only way we can get her to leave, even after two hours, is to offer her biscuits and promise a big salmon dinner.

But she’s also a sun dog and likes to tan her nose as she dries off, on my chair...

lokihelloi thought i would send an update and some photos of loki (short for lokshen, Jewish vermicelli and also, apparently, the Norse god of mischief - so entirely appropriate!).

loki is growing in both size and confidence. he loves playing, particularly with our great maine coon, dizzy, who he teases mercilessly and swings from his ruff in an effort to get him to play!

he is very cute indeed and because of his looks, the long fur and ear tufts, we have been calling him the mini-maine-coon! talk soon

vincent (now django)hi mayhew teamWe just wanted to say a massive thank you for helping us to adopt vincent (we renamed him to django).

django has really settled in very well indeed and has been getting lots of exercise as well as socialising and playing with other dogs.

all in all he has pretty much been the perfect dog. he’s incredibly well behaved and is doing really well in training class. We absolutely adore him and are so glad we were lucky enough to get him.We will update you again soon.

luigi hi allour little man, luigi, has been with us just over six months now and has given us nothing but joyous moments of silliness, entertainment and oodles of love.

he joined two other mayhew ex-residents, hula and clive, who have taken him under their wing and taught him all the mischief they have in their repertoire - not that he needed much tuition, to be fair!

luigi has stolen not only our hearts but also those of the rest of the feline family.

thanks for allowing us to be owned by four wonderful cats.Warmest wishes,

duchess (now sooty)dear mayhewi thought i’d let you know how the lovely sooty (aka duchess) is getting on.

all i can say is... she’s an absolute joy. my mum wasn’t too impressed when we told her we were getting a rottweiler... i guess they have had bad press (rotties, not mums!) but when she met her, she was... like everyone else... totally smitten.

our daughters... particularly the younger one, who has autism... absolutely adore sooty and she adores them back.

sooty has brought so much joy into our world and is definitely part of the family... we wouldn’t be without her.

thank you for letting us have such a wonderful pet.Kind regards

We know that planning your Will can seem a daunting task and we always recommend using a qualified solicitor for advice and guidance. However, we have outlined the most commonly asked questions:

HOW DO I LEAvE A gIFT IN MY WILL?Including The Mayhew Animal Home in a Will is a straightforward and cost-effective way to support our work. It simply involves adding a short paragraph (clause) to your Will.

WHAT INFOrMATION DO I NEED TO INCLuDE THE MAYHEW IN MY WILL?The most important information to include is our:Name: The Mayhew Animal HomeAddress: Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green, London, NW10 6BJRegistered charity number: 1077588

CAN I ADD THE MAYHEW TO MY ExISTINg WILL?Your solicitor would simply need to attach a written instruction, called a codicil. Do not make changes yourself as you could inadvertently invalidate your Will.

Without the forethought and generosity of our supporters our work could simply not continue.
