From 1926 many of the original houses on The Square were demolished to make way for more desirable apartment buildings. This met initially with some resistance from the then Duke of Westminster and whilst it was hoped that some houses would be included in a re-building scheme, flats were effectively accepted as the programme for 1931.

The next decade will bear witness to the most extensive and exciting re-development of Grosvenor Square for nearly 100 years. The former Naval Attache building at 20 Grosvenor Square is presently under construction to create 30 apartments of varying sizes, the former Canadian High Commission at No.1 will be converted to provide 41 apartments and The American Embassy itself with be converted into an extraordinary hotel. Perhaps the tennis court that once served the private homes on The Square may also one day be re-instated.

H E R I T A G E

The second largest of all London Squares, Grosvenor Square was originally conceived in 1720 and built between 1725-31 by the then Duke of Westminster.

At the time of its inception, it was thought that the Square would appeal the residents of nearby St James Square which was at the time considered to be the most fashionable address in London.

In its early years The Square was considered to be sufficiently grand enough for it to be rumoured that George II was considering it as a place of residence for the Prince of Wales and people of title consistently made up a majority of the residents which is still very much the case today.

The Square has been much altered in the near 300 years since its creation with all but a small handful of the original Georgian townhouses remaining. The first complete re-building took place around 1800 with significant internal and external alterations signifying a change in fashion.Between 1853 and 1866 12 houses were either completely re-built or refaced, with many of the houses taking on institutional usage with the French and Belgian embassies moving in. This trend would continue over the years with the Japanese, Canadians and most distinctly, The Americans who would take up residence at 1 Grosvenor Square in 1938 before moving to their Eero Saarinen designed building in 1960.
