Membership News:

‘Chamber Bucks’ Referral Program

The Twin Cities North Chamber is excited to announce the new “Chamber Bucks” referral incentive program for members. With this new program, members can person-ally benefit when they refer new members to the Chamber. When a current member refers a new business to the Chamber and that prospective member joins, the referring member receives $35 in “Chamber Bucks” which can be

used for any Chamber programs, events or even membership renewals. There is no limit on the number of referrals and the credit is valid for one year from the date of issuance. Refer 10 businesses who in turn join and you’ll have $350 to spend toward Chamber programs. In addition to the financial incen-tive, referring members will receive Ambassador points and recognition in the Chamber newsletter. What is an eligible referral? To be eligible for incentive, the prospective member must acknowledge that they were referred to the Chamber by a current member. Talk to your contacts, vendors, associates and social media connections. Let them know how you have benefited from your Chamber membership and how you believe it would help them as well. Encourage them to check out the Twin Cities North Chamber website to view our calendar of events (www.twincitiesnorth.org), or invite them to a Chamber event. We believe this new incentive program is a great way to help members stay actively involved with the Chamber. Help us grow while being rewarded for your efforts!

Recently you received your 2011 Membership Directory in the mail. I encourage you to take a look through it and utilize the businesses that are committed to strengthening the business community through their sponsorship. A special thank you to the members that stepped up and purchased additional advertisement in the directory! Unfortunately the Directory is already out of date, as 30 new members have joined the Chamber since the directory went to print. We will be listing all of our new members periodically, but you can find new members to the Chamber, monthly, here in the newsletter on the next page, and/or daily on the homepage of our website. We have made changes to our website to ensure it is as up-to-date as possible, featuring our live twitter feed, chamber and member events, our newest members, featured event

banners. The membership directory on the Chamber website is also a “live” feature, meaning that within hours of receiving a new members application, or an existing members dropped notice, the membership directory on the website will reflect those updates. You can also use the website to post member events, which appear on the home page, and you can also post “hot deals”, which are essentially coupons that you can offer to members only or to anyone that visits the Chamber website. If you are interested in learning more about the social media aspect of your Chamber membership, join me on May 24th as we discuss the many ways to get the most out of your Chamber membership.

Authentic Marketing views our wholehearted, authentic selves as integral to the dynamic lives of our

businesses. When we experience market changes beyond our control, we can use our authentic selves

to respond quickly with personal energy and confidence. We become a key component in the resilience

of our own business & marketing plan. Our individuality can spark innovations great & small to quickly

deal with changing market conditions.

Authenticity also fosters strong relationships and loyalty – building blocks for success in any business.

Consumers are cautious; they want to work with someone they know and trust. Being genuinely inter-

ested in helping others becomes a basic marketing tenet. And, being authentic brings an inherent per-

sonal reward of greater purpose and satisfaction – all very exciting stuff!

Business Councils: Be in the know, know your community!

FREE monthly meetings from 7:30-8:30 a.m.

The Business Council meetings are not committee meetings that require reoccurring time or financial commitments. Instead the Twin Cities North Chamber has identified a need to focus on each individual city, bringing together the businesses and other key decisions makers in the city. You do not need to be a member of the Chamber, nor do you have to be a resident or business of the city in which you would like to attend. Each meeting we have a featured guest speaker, and will allow time for other discussion and networking.

Legislative Breakfast with the Chamber Friday, May 20, 2011

Shorewood Bar & Grill, Fridley

“The State budget and what it means for business and job creation” **Invited Panelists**

The only thing that can be said is if you missed the last Legislative Breakfast…you missed it. We had Tom Dooher from Education Minnesota (yes, the guy you see on the commercials) and Charlie Kyte, the Executive Director of the Minnesota Association of School Adminis-trators (I’ve never seen him in a commercial). You can imagine from the sides that they represent, the conversation was interesting, and timely as reform is being discussed in this tightly funded biennium. We heard many familiar talking points, the “1950 and 60’s model” we’re using, the power the union holds, and the need for education workers to help our economy groove, now and in the future. The amazing part was that we also received a little insight into one of the reasons the industry is hard to manage. Most teachers tend to have a very altruistic nature, and therefore don’t teach for the pay as much as to help the kids. Mr. Kyte indicated that this belief system tends to result in teachers that may even be offended by an incentive based compensation system, which assumes better production for more money, when in fact, they are always doing their best based on their obligation to the kids. This fact makes it difficult to incent and motivate the teachers, and to find the proper compensation structure all together. Mr. Dooher also stated that this is one of the major reasons the union exists. Teachers won’t fight for a fair wage, and would often allow themselves to be “taken advantage of” if the union wasn’t there to help them, again for the benefit of the children. In either view, this point of discussion only goes to prove how complex the Education discussion is, including how to best fund the system, and how to attract the right highly skilled individuals. Each month this year the Legislative Breakfast has brought these types of eye opening facts to light on timely topics. Not only that, but it has attracted 60+ members each and every month who are decision makers in their respective firms. Why don’t you kill two birds with one stone by 1. learning about a great topic and 2. meeting some even better people at the next Twin Cities North Cham-ber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast.
