"Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold support from an

organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere." Theodore Roosevelt

Pretty powerful statement, that I can’t say I disagree with! Thank you for be-ing a member of the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce. With your sup-port we are doing great things. Business Councils meeting with individual cities, surveying for an Economic Trending report, starting up the 2nd series of the Legislative Breakfast with the Chamber.

This doesn’t even include all the work happening for the election. The Public Policy committee has been diligently working to ensure the members of the Chamber have a good understanding of the candidates running for office. From questionnaires for local candidates to partnering with the North Metro Mayors Association on State and Federal debates, we will be providing you with the information to assist you in making an even more educated decision come election day. Be sure fill out the Economic Survey on the Chamber website, and attend the Legislative Break-fast with the Chamber the third Friday of each month!

Thank you to the Minnesota Twins for hosting our Board of Directors meeting at Target Field on August 27th! The details within the entire stadium are amazing.

Target Field is available for social and business functions. A company recently held a meeting at Target Field and

played the PowerPoint on the outfield scoreboard!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities has been matching children with caring, adult mentors for 90 years. Our one-to-one mentoring programs are proven to have a positive and lasting influence in the lives of young people. Of the 3,400 children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters in 2009, 85% improved their self confidence, 68% improved their academic performance and 55% were better able to avoid substance abuse.

Big Brothers Big Sisters offers programs to meet the needs of a wide variety of volunteer interests. In our School-based Program, volunteers meet their Little Brother or Sister one hour a week at one of more than 25 participating schools. The Community-based Program connects adults and children who prefer to plan activities outside of school hours at a variety of locales.

Enrich a child’s life and help build a stronger community by getting involved with BBBS. There are hundreds of kids waiting for the friendship and encouragement you can provide. To support our life-changing mentoring programs by volunteering or donating, call us at 651-789-2400 or visit www.bigstwincities.org.

Business Councils Columbia Heights - 1st Friday of each month

Fridley - 3rd Wednesday of each month Roseville - 3 Tuesday of each month

I have no single definition of leadership. I just know it when I see it.

Unknown

Like many of you reading this column, I earned money for college by working construction where the one ordering the ditch to be dug, was expected to be the first to pick up the shovel. Setting that example was how those men, on that construction site, defined leadership.

Industrialist John Frost explained his success thus; “I never saw problems in my business, I only saw challenges.” Initiating that attitude was how he defined his role as a leader.

During the reign of Coach Bud Grant, you didn’t see a Viking player engage in the celebratory end zone antics so frequent today. His admonition to his players was simple; “Act like you’ve been there before.” His model for leadership stressed that discipline would lead to success. And it did.

Once again, election season is here and each of us will soon vote to determine the type of leadership we wish to see in public office. And, as an educated vote is the best one to cast, your Chamber has arranged a series of debates/discussions between candidates for local offices.

Starting September 30th, co-sponsored with the North Metro Mayors Association, a debate will be held between candidates seeking to represent legislative Senate District 50.

On October 5th, a debate will be held between candidates seeking to represent legislative Senate District 51.

And, on October 12th, co-sponsored with the Metro North Chamber, a tentative debate has been scheduled between all three candidates for governor.

Watch your email, or contact the Chamber office, for specific information as to times and places.
