Dying To Be Thin Chuck Norris

May - June 2012 14

Experts say that it takes certain personalities or men-talities to take diet and exercise to an obsessive extreme but that our culture also may be breeding them.

It is bombarding young minds with messages every-where that if their looks can’t equal the airbrushed cover images of many magazines, movies and media stories, they’re not worthy of being loved, liked or even noticed.

Moreover, in order to obtain their ideal look in record time, young people are taking greater risks by inducing a plethora of new hyper-fat-burning, muscle-building products that promise to make you “ripped” and lose massive amounts of weight very fast. These products have become a multibillion-dollar industry. Drop by any nutrition store and you’ll see them lining the shelves. They include, according to a recent report on ABC’s “Nightline,” some products containing illegal and unapproved drugs.

Obesity is a growing problem, but dieting can turn obsessive, too, and is no “weigh” to live. We need to help young people temper all things with moderation

An alarming number of young people are suffering from eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia.Girls’ obsession with weight and calories is now guys’ preoccupation with fat indexes and muscle mass.

and balance, gain victory over their thoughts and desires, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly but not obsessively, and be willing to seek help when they need it.

Victory here starts with parents and guardians repeatedly reminding their children and grandchildren of these truths: They are loved and valued just as they are. They are beautiful creations of God, inside and out. Their lives are not accidents. They were born with a purpose. They are God’s greatest treasure, and he doesn’t make junk. And if they regularly chew on those truths, it will help keep them from swal-lowing the lies of this world.

The Mayo Clinic offers some further noteworthy tips for working with kids in the critical teenage years, though these actions would be beneficial for children of any age:

ENCOurAgE hEAlThy EATINg hABITs

Talk to your teen about how diet can affect his or her health, appearance and energy level. Encourage your teen to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and to avoid skipping meals. Make healthy eating easy for your teen by eating together as a family.

DIsCuss MEDIA MEssAgEsTelevision programs, movies, Web sites

and magazines may send your teen the message that only a certain body type is acceptable. Encourage your teen to talk about and question what he or she has seen or heard — especially from Web sites or other sources that promote anorexia as a lifestyle choice, rather than an eating dis-order (commonly called ‘pro-ana’ sites).

ENCOurAgE A hEAlThy BODy IMAgE

Talk to your teen about his or her self-image and offer reassurance that healthy body shapes vary. Your acceptance and re-spect can help your teen build self-esteem and resilience. Encourage family and friends to refrain from using hurtful nick-names and joking about people who are

overweight or have a large body frame.

DIsCuss ThE DANgErs Of DIETINg

Discuss obsessing about food and emotional eating. Explain that dieting can compromise your teen’s nutrition, growth and health. Remind your teen that eating or controlling his or her diet isn’t a healthy way to cope with emotions. Instead, en-courage your teen to talk to family, friends or a counselor about problems he or she may be facing.

TEAM up WITh yOur TEEN’s DOCTOr

Your teen’s doctor can help identify early indicators of an eating disorder and prevent the development of full-blown ill-ness. For instance, the doctor can ask your teen questions about eating habits and satisfaction with his or her appearance during routine medical appointments. These visits should include checks of body mass index and weight percentiles, which can alert you and your teen’s doctor to any significant changes.

sET A gOOD ExAMplEIf you’re constantly dieting, using food

to cope with your emotions or talking about losing weight, you may have a hard time encouraging your teen to eat a healthy diet or feel satisfied with his or her appearance. Set a good example by eating healthy foods and taking pride in your body.”

* * * * * *Dying to be thin is no laughing matter.

It can be lethal.Early detection is key. Symptoms in-

clude eating alone, being compulsively concerned about cutting fat, being obses-sively picky about food, hiding food and using clothing to hide a diminishing body.

If you think that you or a loved one may be suffering from an eating disorder, here are some helpful resources:

• National Eating Disorders Association live helpline: 800-931-2237 (weekdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Eastern time). 31

17 Hi Class Living

And when it comes to matters of not just the heart but money as well, there’s no better time than a first date to find out if your new guy cuts the proverbial mustard! After all, you don’t want to become emotionally involved with someone who doesn’t have the same approach to money as you do.

“Dating is all about learning, and one of the most im-portant things you need to know is if your date is good with his money,” says Leslie Greenman, author of the book Dating Our Money: A Women’s Guide to Confidence with Money & Men. “While the first flush of romance can be a head-spinning experience, make sure you do your homework prior to giving your heart away. Forget about anyone who won’t meet you halfway with a healthy approach to money. Make sure he is getting on the right track if he hasn’t been before, and keep an eye out for telltale signs of slip-ups.”

Finding Out About A Man’s Finances On The First Date by DottieDeHart

If you’re planning on going out with a new love interest, remember that his good looks and winning personality aren’t all that matter. the blunt reality is that money is the #1 cause of divorce in the u.s.

May - June 2012 18

Finding Out About A Man’s Finances On The First Date by DottieDeHart

19 Hi Class Living

Greenman offers some tips on how to zoom in on your new date’s views on money management so that you can find the love of your life and keep your financia:

BrINg CAshHave cash with you on the date so when

it is time to pay you can offer to cover your half with cash. While you’re offering to pay, mention to him that you don’t like to use credit cards and wait to see how he responds. You might be surprised at how he reacts.

“A date once told me that he wished his ex-wife had had the same philosophy with credit cards,” says Greenman. “He told me she racked up $70,000 in credit card debt — money he was left paying back. That was a huge surprise! But it opened the door for me to find out more from him about his financial health without having to ask point blank.”

ChECk OuT hIs WhEElsIs your date driving a flashy sports car,

but you know he’s in the first job of his career? Is he driving a more modest set of wheels but you know he’s in a leader-ship position at work? The type of car he drives when taken into consideration with his career can be an indicator of how he spends and budgets his money. It might also indicate that he turns to material ob-jects for fulfillment.

“Remember, though, you’re not marrying the guy’s sports car, and you certainly don’t want to wind up in a situation where you’re paying for it if he can’t,” says Greenman.

Ask ABOuT hIs rElATIONshIp WITh hIs fAMIly

Often, he’ll give you the information you want without you having to pry. For example, he might reveal that his divorce from his wife resulted because of money issues. Or he might reveal that he was raised in a middle class family with frugal parents.

“While he might not necessarily still follow the money values and habits his parents raised him with, finding out about

his parents is a great way to learn what his initial lessons about money entailed,” notes Greenman. “And finding out if he’s carrying around any financial baggage from a past relationship is a must. Re-member, though, that if he is that doesn’t mean you have to give him the boot. It’s all about finding out if he approaches those financial bumps in the road in a fiscally responsible way.”

fIND OuT If hE Is rEluCTANT TO DIsCuss DIffICulT suBjECTs

The best approach might be to ask him about his past relationships. Did they end well? Does he still talk with any of his exes? If he is very reluctant to talk about his relationships, it could be a red flag that he won’t be able to communicate about dif-ficult decisions if you’re in a relationship.

“Communicating, listening, and sharing are integral parts of a successful partner-ship,” advises Greenman. “Make sure this guy knows how to not only share his thoughts but also to listen to yours. Life is full of decisions and ups and downs; how has he handled his own past issues?”

ChECk OuT hIs phONEOn average, people spend $150 on phone

apps per year, but some people have bills as high as $900 per year. Is that a luxury you feel comfortable with? “Check out your date’s phone,” recommends Green-man. “Is it the latest, greatest smartphone model? Ask him what his favorite app is and whether he gets only free ones. If it appears he spends a lot of money each month on something as trivial as phone apps, consider how he might spend money in other areas. On the other hand, if he has an app that helps him manage his monthly budget, that’s probably a good sign!”

gO ONlINEWith all of the information available on-

line, you can find out a lot about someone with a quick search. For example, you can check if a person has paid their property taxes by searching online public records.

“It may seem like playing a game of I Spy, May - June 2012 20

but if you are going to give your heart to someone, and commit to a lifelong partner-ship, at the very least you need to be able to trust them,” says Greenman. “Before you even go on that first date, you might want to do some research. If you find a record online of his eight counts of tax evasion, go ahead and cancel your evening out!”

lOOk AT hIs fACEBOOk pAgEHas he posted a lot about expensive

clothes or gadgets that he’s bought? Or about being low on money? Are the pictures he has posted of him with other people or with his stuff?

“Facebook is a great way to find out about your date’s life without ever having to ask an awkward question about money,” notes Greenman. “You want to be romanti-cally involved with someone who not only has the time, but makes the time, to be with you and share your life. If this guy can only post pictures of himself on his Facebook page, or if he is constantly bragging about all the latest stuff he’s bought, picture a big red flag. It could be an indicator that either A) he’s overspending on unimport-ant items or B) he thinks he can use money to impress people or buy their love.” 72

Here are some vacation planning tips for you and your family.

TAkE All yOur VACATIONTo enjoy your vacation, you must decide

to take it. Americans take many fewer weeks of vacation time than most other civilized nations.

This year, make a pledge to accept all the vacation time you have coming, even if you can only afford a Staycation. Vacations don’t have to involve expensive hotels or exotic locations. There’s great value in just shifting your mindset: from work to play, from pressure to pleasure, from pleasing the boss to taking care of yourself.

If you can’t find a way to disconnect from your job when you’re on vacation, you’re not allowed to call it that. Don’t check emails, phone the office or surf on work-related topics. Breaking the habit is what freedom feels like.

Ever since this ‘70s favorite started ap-pearing on the runways last year, designers have reinterpreted them for modern women this season. Now a favorite of celebrities, the jumpsuit is once again rockin’ the style scene.

Here are a few ways to jumpstart your wardrobe this season.

• Choose a jumpsuit that really fits and flatters your figure. One reason jumpsuits often get a bad fashion rep is that it can be hard to find the perfect suit for your shape. Let’s face it; the one-piece outfit has to not only fit your lower half but your upper half as well. There is little room for making mistakes on this style statement.

• Make sure the jumpsuit you choose doesn’t make you look like you’re getting ready to take flight in yards and yards of fabric. Draping in all the right places is key. Or choose a more tailored top that contrasts

Theia features the jumpsuit for a sophisticated fashion-forward alternative.

with flowing legs. If you’re on the petite side, choose a higher waistline that will make your legs look longer.

• Focus on the waist. Whether the jumpsuit or romper is belted or elasticized, emphasize your curves. The one-piece jumpsuit that is loose, baggy and has ab-solutely no waist whatsoever, may be the perfect thing to wear when you’re out in the garden, but when it comes to making a public appearance... it’s time to accentuate the positive!

• “Too tight is not right!” Unless you’re starring in a new Batman movie as Cat-woman or channeling a rock star such as Madonna, the tight black leather look is not something that works for most of us mere mortals.

• Go for solids. There are lots of fun floral prints out there, but perhaps the “safest” way to play the jumpsuit this season is to stick to solid colors. Or if you want to tone down a graphic print, top off your jumpsuit with a well-cut jacket in a complementary solid color.

• Get formal. Jumpsuits are a great way to express yourself in a new way for more formal occasions. From one-shouldered jersey jumpsuits to tuxedo-inspired white satin numbers to slinky halters and back-less cutouts, this one-piece wonder is a sophisticated way to stand out in a crowd of little black dresses.

• When your summer is all about casual, jumpsuits can go short, too. The strapless romper is a great way to cover up at the beach or backyard pool and still sport great style.

• And what shoes to wear? It’s easy... taller heels or wedges easily dress up jumpsuits and rompers, while flat, strappy sandals or espadrilles add a more sporty edge for dressed down occasions. ∆

The Baby Phat collection goes green with palm prints.

One of nature’s favorite hues, the greens this year are balanced with cool pastels. One of the freshest ways to go a little green this season is to wear the cooler hues from head to toe, according to fashion designer rebecca Minkoff. “I like tones of one color,” she says, “like the spectrum of a bright green with a soft fading jade. It’s a feeling like fragile vintage colors, and it is interesting to place these into modern shapes.”

The ocean greens are riding the waves in collections like the ones from Ella Moss where “crystal clear Ca-ribbean” green is the signature color. Designer pamela protzel scott at Ella Moss pairs this shade of green with a neutral light oatmeal. “This feels fresh and new for spring and pairs well back to the palette of bright colors and muted tones,” she says. her must-have item for spring? playful, but also has an elevated sense of casualness.”

Other designers weave green into ab-stract floral prints like the palm printed dresses from Baby Phat or the fern greens inspired by tulips in Todashi Shoji’s spring collection. The graphic prints in designer Tracy Reese’s spring collection contrast her “amazon greens” with navy, orange and yellow.

The paler icy mint greens are another way to give a spring closet a refreshing bite. These cool hues showed up in spring col-lections at Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Yves Saint Laurent and Prabal Gurung. A touch of mint is one of the easiest ways to pop a little “cool” into your spring and summer wardrobe.

Since you’ve probably collected various shades of green over the years, try a new look by combining several shades of analo-gous greens together. Think peacock feath-ers, a favorite inspiration when it comes to color. Check out the “Talithia” peacock

Green comple-ments the red colors, and this spring many designers use this complementary theory to make green come alive with all shades of pink. White is a great way to lighten up any shade of green this spring, too.

The warmer yellow greens also promise to be hits for this year. Pantone has named “bright chartreuse” as one of the hot colors of the fall 2012 season. Watch for designer Nanette Lepore’s collection, which artfully combines chartreuse with intense blues and purples.

DON’T gET shOrTChANgEDYes, we know those cropped pants have

been the fashion trend du jour for the past few years, but they don’t necessarily work for everyone. If you have short legs, remember cropped pants make them even shorter. Ditto with cuffs. Consider wearing heels with cropped pants, if you are indeed very short.

If you are trying on pants in a store, be

AVOID ThE ExTrA BElls AND WhIsTlEs

Yes, the embroideries and the pockets and all the extra hoopla on pants can get in the way of finding the perfect pair of pants. However, this season, the extras are all about color. Buying a pair of jeans in a bold hot pink can boost your wardrobe for months to come.

NO plEATs plEAsEPleated trousers have gone the way of

“Mom jeans.” Stick to flat front pants, which will give you a much better silhou-ette. Yes, you may have to try on dozens of brands to find the ones that fit and don’t give you the dreaded “muffin top,” but it will be worth it. Then stick to the style that flatters you most, and buy several pairs when you find a pair that works.

If you’re as drawn to these delicious colors and patterns as I am but aren’t sure how to incorporate them into your decor, never fear. Weaving color and pattern into any style of home is easy, if you know how. Here are some tips for achieving this season’s bold and beautiful look.

Remember the color wheel you learned about in high-school art class, where groups of colors are paired perfectly with one another? Pull it out and use it as your guide when creating a color palette for your room. That way, you’ll end up with a space that is harmonious, not chaotic.

If you’re going with really colorful up-holstery, go neutral on the walls. If you go

Using Color And Pattern

bold with the wall color, the upholstery is toned down. Then bring in the wall color through accents, like accessories and pil-lows. You have to pick one or the other.

If the thought of bringing in bright color and bold pattern intrigues you, try starting out with just a splash of color here and there in your decor. Even a tiny pop of magenta, turquoise or marigold, brought in through a few lovely and inexpensive ac-cessories, can have a big impact in a room.

Put a turquoise, apple-green or yellow vase, urn or cachepot on your fireplace mantel, on a sofa table or inside a bookcase. Toss a silk green pillow in a chain pattern on side chairs. Start small and stay in your

May - June 2012 38

comfort zone. You’ll be amazed by how these little additions punch up your room.

An easy yet effective way to bring color into your home is to paint a room a vibrant hue. Wall paint is relatively inexpensive, and if you end up regretting your decision, you can just cover the offending color with something a bit more sedate.

Instead of tackling one of the most vis-ible rooms in your home, like the living room or kitchen, experiment with color in, for example, a spare bedroom. Paint the walls a soft neutral, then layer in lovely colors and interesting patterns through the bedding.

A fabulous way to work color and pat-

tern into a room is through a piece of up-holstered furniture. Cover an upholstered ottoman or side chair in a fresh geometric fabric, making it the vibrant focal point for the furniture grouping.

You can also bring in color and pattern through window and floor treatments. I’m a huge fan of curtain panels that feature a relaxed pinch pleat, hemmed so they just break on the floor, like a man’s trousers. But just because the design of a window treatment is simple doesn’t mean the color or pattern of the fabric has to be. Crafting the panels out of a contemporary fabric will go a long way toward updating the look of the room. ∆

like the purple “Tokyo,” violet “Molokai” and pink “Sonja,” and even flowers with double blooms, such as the maroon “Cra-ter Lake” and the pink “Cezanne.”

Some things to consider:

lIghTIn a natural setting, African violets

grow in the shade of tree canopies. In winter it’s OK to place them in a south-facing window, but for the rest of the year, keep them in an east-or north-facing window out of direct sunlight. As with all houseplants, turn every few days for even growth.

TEMpErATurEAfrican violets like the

same temperatures we do, 65 to 75 degrees. They stop growing below 55 -- pro-longed cold snaps or even a light frost can kill them. They also can’t take high heat for very long.

sOIlYou can buy special pot-

ting mixes for African vio-lets, but I prefer to make my own by combining two parts sphagnum peat moss, one part commercial sterilized potting soil and one part vermiculite.

African violets flower more heavily if they’re a little root-bound, so don’t feel compelled to increase the size of the pot too quickly.

MOIsTurEGardeners disagree about watering.

Some let the plant’s soil dry out com-pletely; others insist on keeping the soil evenly moist. But neither camp lets the soil stay too wet, which will rot the roots. I water when the surface of the potting mix is dry to the touch.

As an added precaution, let water stand overnight to come to room temperature and allow the chlorine to dissipate. Avoid

watering from above: wet foliage will cause leaf spotting, and water standing in the crown can quickly rot new buds. Instead, set the container in a pan of water for 20 minutes to soak from the bottom. Remove and let the container drain completely.

fEEDINg AND MAINTENANCEUse an African violet fertilizer accord-

ing to the instructions on the package. Flush built-up salts every two months by pouring several cups of clear water through the soil mix.

African violets need high humidity. If moisture is needed, mist lightly twice a day. Spray warm water from 2 feet away and it will cool to proper temperature as it settles on the foliage. This ultra-light misting won’t cause leaf spotting. Be sure to pinch off any dead flow-ers and foliage.

pEsTs AND DIsEAsEsCyclamen mites, invisi-

ble to the naked eye, attack African violets and turn the crowns gray, brown or yellow as the leaves be-come twisted and brittle. Unfortunately, the best

treatment is to burn the plants, throw the potting mix out in a sealed trash bag and disinfect the containers with bleach. Thrips cause flowers to become speck-led and blotched; but they are easier to control.

lEAf CuTTINgsPropagate African violets by cutting

a healthy leaf and stem from the center of the rosette. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone. Poke a hole in the potting mix with a pencil, insert the cutting halfway and firm the soil around it. Keep in bright light, and also water every other day. In six to eight weeks, new plants will grow from the base of the stem. ∆

In her new book Lose Weight Without Dieting or Working Out, nutritionist and certified weight loss expert JJ Smith says that diet foods can make you fat and you have to be really careful when shopping.

“Many products,” she says, “are al-lowed to use the word ‘diet’, because they have some reduced amount of sugar or fat. But unless you look really carefully at all the ingredients, you won’t be able to iden-tify all the hidden ones that can contribute to weight gain.”

She has come up with a quick list of the reasons why anyone who is trying to slim down needs to avoid certain diet foods:

A number of tasty herbal seasonings, spices and plant foods can actually help lower blood glucose levels. In some cases, regular consumption can lead to reductions in blood sugar levels that are equivalent to those achieved with prescription drugs.

In an article published in the medical journal Diabetes Care, scientists at the Human Nutrition Research Center in Belts-ville, Md., reported that daily consumption of less than a half-teaspoon of cinnamon produced significant reductions in blood-sugar levels.

Led by Dr. Richard Anderson, the sci-entists recruited 60 men and women with type-2 diabetes to participate in a study designed to test the glucose-lowering ef-fects of cinnamon. Half of the study partici-pants were given capsules containing 1 to 6 grams of cinnamon daily, while the other half received placebo capsules.

In just under six weeks, the volunteers

taking the cinnamon capsules experienced a 20 percent reduction in their fasting glu-cose levels. The group taking the placebo pills showed no decrease in its blood-sugar levels.

Cinnamon also had an impressive im-pact on the volunteers’ cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Study participants who received the cinnamon capsules saw their triglyceride levels fall at least 25 percent, while their total cholesterol levels fell 12 percent to 26 percent.

Although its precise mechanism of action isn’t fully understood, cinnamon appears to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Scientists also speculate that because the spice slows stomach emptying, it helps reduce the rise in blood glucose that typically follows meals, especially in individuals with type-2 diabetes.

Anderson and his research team re-ported that, like cinnamon, bay leaves

appear to enhance the glucose-lowering actions of insulin. In a study of 40 volun-teers with type-2 diabetes, the researchers tested the effects of ground bay leaves on blood-sugar levels.

The results of the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemical Nutri-tion, revealed that volunteers consuming 1 to 3 grams of ground bay leaves daily experienced reductions in blood-glucose levels ranging from 21 percent to 26 per-cent. Significant reductions in blood sugar were seen in as little as 10 days, and those reductions persisted for more than a week after the volunteers stopped consuming the bay leaf capsules.

The scientists also noted major improve-ments in the subjects’ cholesterol profiles. After consuming ground bay leaves for 30 days, blood tests revealed that the volun-teers’ total cholesterol levels had declined at least 21 percent and triglyceride levels

were as much as a third lower. In a study published in the journal Plant

Foods and Human Nutrition, researchers reported their findings that diabetic rats fed turmeric, a yellow spice used to flavor curry powder, experienced dramatic re-ductions in blood-sugar levels. In another study, turmeric was found to delay the development and progression of diabetic cataracts in rodents.

If you’re looking for a refreshing bever-age that doesn’t send your blood sugar soaring, black tea is an excellent choice. The results of a study conducted by re-searchers at King’s College London sug-gest that consumption of black tea may help stimulate insulin production by the pancreas and produce a measurable reduc-tion in blood-glucose levels.

Scientists at the University of Massa-chusetts found that natural compounds in plant-based beverages like black tea

While herbs, spices and tea can impact blood sugar levels shortly after consump-tion, their long-term benefits may be even more important. Because they’re rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory com-pounds called polyphenols, they can help protect the entire body from complications related to diabetes and high blood-sugar levels, including heart disease and stroke.

Fortunately, herbs, spices and teas are well tolerated by most folks, with very few adverse side effects. Still, if you have type-2 diabetes or if you’re at risk for the disease, it’s important to work closely with your doctor to manage your blood-sugar levels, especially if you’re planning to make major changes to your diet. ∆

When the body receives a protein or power bar, it tries to break down the sugar and chemicals in it, but when they cannot be fully digested by the body, the excess ends up being stored in the body as fat. This excess can actually produce a weight gain instead of a weight loss. It’s better to eat a vegetable like avocado, which is healthier and high in protein.

They increase appetite by sending false signals to the brain that sweet food is on the way, and when it never arrives, the brain never gives the signal that you are satisfied caus-ing cravings for sweets. There’s research that shows that aspartame in particular, stimulates the release of insulin, which tells the body to store fat! Bottom line – they actually contribute to weight gain.

“The best alternative,” JJ says, “is to lim-it or avoid these foods! Drink more water and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. You’ll feel better, lose more weight, and enjoy what you eat more too.”

Get Fit While You Sit Stretch, Tone and Strengthen From Your Chair! Paul Krupin

For many people vigorous stand up exercise is simply out of thequestion. they may be overweight, have diab etes, an injury, or bea senior citizen with mobility issues. But accor ding to Jodi stolove, creator of Chair Dancing Fitness programs, th ere are plenty ofexercises that can be done. all you need is a chair.

TONE yOur ArMs AND lEgs:

Sit forward in your chair, using weights, or water bottles, if available: Press your leg and arm front like you are cross country skiing- pulling with your arms like you are using ski poles. Repeat 8 times.

sIDE sTrETCh:

Sit straight, raise your arms towards the ceiling, lean towards to the right, counting slowly to four, back to the center. Then lean left, again counting to four, then back to center. Repeat both ways, three to four times.

It’s easy and fun and can help people burn calories, improve circulation and re-duce stress. It’s a convenient way to relieve pain and stress.

Ms. Stolove says that even if you are stuck at your computer all day long, five minutes of exercise every few hours can help people stretch and relax, strengthen specific muscles and even get your heart rate up and your oxygen circulating throughout your body.

“The economy still isn’t great so I’d bet-ter lie low,” you reason. “No, it’s not what I was hoping for, but if I get too pushy I’m sure they’ll pass me over for one of the other candidates. I should just be grateful to have made the cut,” you think.

If you’re like many women, this just seems like common sense. But according to Vickie Milazzo, author of the book Wicked Success Is Inside Every Woman, settling for less than you’re worth is a big mistake — even in the wake of the Great Recession. In fact, it might even cost you the job.

“When I’m hiring, I actually weed out candidates who underprice themselves because I assume they won’t perform at the

level I expect,” shares Milazzo. “In my eyes and in the eyes of many other CEOs, job candidates actually lose credibility when they underprice themselves.

“Many women mistakenly think they’re doing their employers a favor by not pushing for more or that they’ll be more appealing if they don’t ask for what they’re worth,” she adds. “The bad economy might be the current excuse, but I believe most underpricing occurs because many women just aren’t comfortable with ne-gotiating.”

If you’re ready to stop sitting back and start negotiating like you mean it, follow Milazzo’s tips.

Let’s say you’re on the short list for a

promotion. if you get it you’ll take on far

more responsibility and you definitely feel up

to the challenge. But the salary attached to

the job is a little lackluster. you’d love to ask

Negotiate Like You Mean It:Tips To Help Women In Business Dotti De Hart

55 Hi Class Living

NEVEr lET ThEM sEE yOu As A COMMODITy

After all, commodities are easy to obtain and easy to replace. And that’s certainly not how you want to be perceived at your job — whether you’re an employee, a leader, or an entrepreneur. After all, if the people you’re working with know that others share your skill set, they won’t have any reason to pay the price you’re asking for. They’ll be in control, not you. From Day One, do everything you can to ensure that you aren’t seen as interchangeable or dispensable.

“Don’t shrink into your chair and be-come the invisible employee,” Milazzo urges. “Do what you need to do to stand out. Get in the middle of everything and bring new ideas to the table. Build relation-ships throughout the company. If you’re able to make yourself invaluable and leverage the things that make you unique, you’ll also make yourself impossible to replace. And when that happens, you’ll be in control of your own price.”

DIsTINguIsh AMBITION frOM grEED

Prior to launching yourself into a nego-tiation, it’s a good idea to take a step back and ask yourself why you’re working to-ward this particular goal. For example, say you’ve been in your current position for two and a half years without a significant raise, and you think your skills are worth much more. Before you march into your boss’s office, ask yourself: Why do I want a raise? Do I just want more money, or am I honestly interested in advancing in this company?

“It’s very important to distinguish ambition from greed,” Milazzo insists. “Wanting more money isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, but it can get you into trouble if your quest for cash mires you deeper in a commitment you’re not passionate about or causes you to ignore opportuni-ties that might be ideally suited to your strengths and interests. Always make sure you’re negotiating for the right reasons.

I’m ambitious and competitive, but I’ve left very large sums on the table because the opportunity wasn’t something I was passionate about. And I haven’t regretted those decisions once.”

BE yOur OWN NuMBEr ONE fANIt can be hard for women to toot their

own horns. To a certain extent, we’re actu-ally wired to nurture and care for others and to put the good of the whole over our own personal interests. While these impulses aren’t inherently bad, it’s time for a newsflash: if you don’t announce your own achievements, you can bet that no one else is going to do it for you. With humility, make sure that you’re keeping your name, your accomplishments, and your skill set in front of everyone.

“Have you ever noticed that women tend to downplay their accomplishments, while men routinely highlight their achievements and use them to advance?” Milazzo asks. “Recall the stat on men and women making salary negotiations when they’re hired. Clearly, we females need to take a page from the male playbook and make sure that we’re getting the recogni-tion and credit we’ve earned. If you still have doubts, consider that announcing your accomplishments validates the in-vestments others have made in you. Your boss, for example, wants to know that she bet on a winner when she hired you!”

Ask fOr EVEryThINg AT ThE BEgINNINg Of ThE NEgOTIATION

This can also be a difficult strategy for women to adopt. We don’t want to come on too strong or appear to be overly ag-gressive, so we don’t put all of our cards on the table at the beginning of negotiations. We tell ourselves that we’ll get the other person used to the idea gradually. But es-pecially in business, adding on as you go along generally isn’t a good idea because it makes you appear unfair.

“Consider this situation,” Milazzo asks. “If, for example, you tell a prospect your consulting fee is $150 per hour and his

reply is, ‘That’s very reasonable,’ you can’t jump in and say, ‘Well, but what I really want is $175 per hour.’ Think through what you want before you sit down to negotiate. Remember that some people do keep score, so being able to track what you really need helps you let the other party win points as you score big.”

Remember the old adage: nothing risked, nothing gained. Don’t jump too fast to say yes to the first offer, even if you think it’s fair. It’s always smart to assess the situ-ation, the person making the offer, and how far you might be able to go before signing your name on the dotted line. Chances are, if your request for more is denied, you’ll still be left with the initial offer.

If you like cruising you’ll surely love the yachting experience on a beautiful and luxurious

seaDream yacht. seaDream yacht Club is a family

the ultimate yachting experience.

“It’s yachting not cruising,” is their motto, clearly defining the difference be-tween today’s mega ships and SeaDream’s intimate yachts. Carrying up to 112 guests and a crew of 95, they are dedicated to pampering and indulging their passen-gers with top service and all inclusive amenities.

We recently experienced the “yachting” difference while sailing with the SeaDream I on a seven night voyage form Puerto Rico to St. Martin.

The trip begins in San Juan where we board the yacht and are welcomed with champagne and canapés in the main sa-lon. Following a brief check-in, we head to our spacious 195-Sq Ft stateroom. The room is appointed with a large sofa, coffee table, blond wood cabinets, a well stocked mini fridge, flat screen TV, Belgian linens, robes and personalized stationery. The marble bathroom features a glass enclosed multi-jet shower and a selection of Bvlgari toiletries.

We pop open a chilled bottle of cham-pagne, make a bon voyage toast, and head out to explore our new home.

The yacht is compact and easy to get around. There are two restaurants, a pool, fitness center, beauty salon and spa, library, a small casino, and the popular Top of the Yacht Bar on the upper deck.

yAChT AMENITIEs AND ACTIVITIEs

Sailing the Caribbean with SeaDream is an enjoyable, stress-free experience, somewhat similar to cruising on a friend’s yacht. The ship moors for the day or overnight in sheltered bays or coves and guests can go ashore, relax by the pool, or enjoy complimentary water sports.

The yacht is equipped with a retract-able platform where you can try water skiing, stand-up boarding, wave running, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, and banana boat rides.

For more leisurely activities try a pam-

pering Thai massage at the spa, practice your swing on the golf simulator, catch up on your reading on a deck chaise, or simply take in the sea breezes, the blue sky, and the crimson sunsets.

A favorite pastime is meeting fellow passengers, mostly upscale, avid travelers from all over the world. With only about a hundred guests on board, you’ll soon be chatting and making dinner plans with your new friends.

After dark, guests enjoy performances by the on board musicians, dance music, disco nights, and outdoor movies on the big screen by the pool.

For a memorable night, reserve a cushy Balinese bed on the upper deck and let the ocean breeze and the starry skies lull you to sleep.

The yachting experience is enhanced by personal touches such as complimentary pajamas embroidered with your name, roses, and Belgian truffles. The service is flawless and friendly, staff members ad-

DININgBreakfast and lunch are served at the

Topside restaurant, offering a la carte specials and lavish buffet spreads. All breads and pastries are baked daily, and many dishes are prepared “a la minute.” They also feature exotic fruit such as succulent Asian rambutan, sweet passion fruit, pomegranates, and lingonberries.

Every evening before dinner, guests gather in the main salon for port brief-ings over drinks and hors d’oeuvres. During the Captain’s reception guests are welcomed with champagne and caviar.

Dinner is the culinary highlight of the day. It is served in the dining room and on special nights, “al fresco” on the top deck. You can also reserve a private table outdoors for a romantic dinner under the stars.

The dinner menu features a fusion of tastes and textures from all over the world, using only fresh ingredients. In addition to the signature dishes, you will also find vegetarian, gluten free, wellness, and raw food entrees.

Some of the culinary highlights in-clude gourmet dishes such as Dover sole meuniere on artichoke barigoule, turbot on saffron risotto with caviar beurre blanc, and pepper coated beef fillet on wild mushroom and truffle demi-glace. For the farewell dinner the chefs prepare an exquisite tasting menu featuring a parade of epicurean delights.

reached by larger ships. Itineraries often feature overnight stays in some of the best yachting harbors.

In St. Barts, we moored overnight, allowing guests to enjoy the nightlife and the fine French restaurants in town. Many spent the day on the beach at the famous Eden Rock hotel and en-joyed lunch at the trendy Nikki Beach restaurant. St. Barts is also a shopper’s paradise with picturesque streets lined with designer boutiques.

On the island of Nevis we were treated to a picnic on a secluded sandy beach, surrounded by lush vegetation. The barbecue lunch was preceded by SeaDream’s signature champagne and caviar served on a surf board. Some guests tried the complimentary water sports, while others worked on their tans and cooled off with frozen mar-garitas and pina coladas.

Other stops included the island of St John, famous for its underwater snorkeling trails, Virgin Gorda and its magnificent Bath rock formations, and the beautiful island of Anguilla.

and wines, motorized and non motor-ized water sports, bicycles, and even tips. Spa services, premium wines, and shore excursions, are offered at an ad-ditional charge.

SeaDreams itineraries vary with the seasons: From May to October they sail the Baltic Sea, the Norwegian Fjords and the Mediterranean. From Novem-ber to April they visit the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, and explore the Amazon River.

Chances are that once you expe-rience “yachting” you may never go back to regular “cruising.” Visit www.seadream.com, or call your travel agent.

el Conquistador resortEl Conquistador is a Waldorf Astoria resort

located on the Eastern tip of Puerto Rico where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Carib-bean Sea.

It takes about an hour to travel from the airport to the resort’s verdant grounds. (Shuttle buses are available). The entrance road winds along a manicured 18 hole golf course, over rolling hills, amidst palm trees and tropical vegetation.

Dramatically set atop a 300-ft high bluff on over 500 private acres, the El Conquis-tador offers breathtaking views of the panoramic coastline.

The lobby, appointed with white washed walls, decorative archways, and floor tiles is reminiscent of a Moorish hacienda.

Accommodations are in a top-of-the- bluff V shaped building, in marina condos, and in casitas, all surrounded by lush vegetation and colorful tropical flowers.

Guestrooms are spacious and airy, with white furniture and amenities from slip-pers and robes to complimentary WiFi. Most rooms feature terraces with sprawl-ing ocean views.

Spend some time at the resort’s main pool area, swim in the lap pool, soak in the whirlpool, and cool off with a refreshing cocktail at the swim-up bar.

If you are a beach lover, take the half-hour ferry ride to the hotel’s 100-acre Palomino Island. The private island is a self-contained tropical paradise, a playground with white sand beaches, shady palm trees, thatched huts, beach chairs, and lively bars and restaurants. You can also enjoy water-sports such as snorkeling, canoeing, and wind surfing.

Take the cable car to the resort’s marina and view the beautiful yachts, browse the boutiques, sip a drink at the outdoor bar, and dine in the seafood restaurant.

Another attraction is the Coqui Water Park, where you will enjoy three exciting water slides, float on a “lazy river,” and wade in the large infinity pool.

El San Juan is located along a two-mile beach in the city’s trendy Isla Verde district, only minutes from the airport but a world apart.

As you enter the spacious lobby you are surrounded by lavish opulence: red marble floors, mahogany paneling, carved ceilings, and fine artwork. The focal point is the lively Blue Bar, with its blue ceiling and huge crystal chandelier. To the far right, a casino hums in the distance, and to the left, the spacious reception area awaits your arrival.

Guestrooms are large and airy, many overlooking the ocean. Furnishings are light and contemporary, and the amenities range from flat screen TVs to complimen-tary WiFi.

The resort’s main attraction, however, is its Encanto Beach Club, a playground for sun and surf worshippers. Here you can enjoy a free-form pool, a grotto waterfall, a swim-up bar, and a spacious sundeck. Claim your spot under a shady canopy, sprawl on a thick cushioned chaise or on a day bed for two, and enjoy a frozen pina colada, while listening to salsa music.

However, the project involved a lot of moving parts, and a flat fee could end up costing her instead of making her a profit. “If your date has only one or two of these faults, you might still want to give him a chance and that’s okay,” notes Greenman. “Be clear about your own goals and ex-pectations and stick to those when you’re deciding on whether you should go on a second date.”

“Real love is about forming a partnership

between two people who care enough about one another to make responsible decisions in all aspects of life, including finances,” says Greenman. “Forget about getting swept away until you make sure you won’t get tossed overboard or financially sunk in the process! When you’re confident that you’ve found someone who is as financially aware as you are, you can develop other as-pects of the relationship with less anxiety.” ∆

FINDING OUT ABOUT A MAN’S FINANCES— From Pg. 21

that! I have rewritten entire contracts with companies much bigger than mine — companies who claimed I had to sign their offer ‘as is’ — by remembering that I was ultimately dealing with other people, not with a faceless corporation. I have learned that everything is negotiable, so if you have something to offer, go ahead and negotiate!”

NEVEr TAlk Off ThE rECOrDWhen you’re negotiating for something

you want, make sure you only go public with information you’re comfortable with the other party knowing.

“Never tip your hand,” Milazzo insists. “You may think that saying to a colleague, ‘Just between you and me, I’m asking to spearhead the new project, but I’d settle for just being on the team,’ will stay between the two of you. Maybe it will — but maybe it won’t. If you let others know that you’ll settle for something, you risk ending up with that instead of with what you really want — or worse, even less.”

NEVEr lET yOursElf BE BullIEDWomen who aren’t used to negotiating

are especially susceptible to being intimi-dated by a show of force — but even vet-eran businesswomen can be taken aback by unexpected aggression or resistance! If you find yourself in this situation, remind yourself (once again) that you are dealing with another human being and that you have something valuable to offer. Don’t be afraid to demand respect. And if you

consistently don’t get it, well, it might be time to rethink whether you want to work with the other party in the first place.

“I’ve worked with plenty of attorneys, met some tough negotiators, and seen many different negotiation styles,” Mila-zzo says. “When I’m up against a pit bull, I’ll take a walk and role-play with my hus-band Tom, who can be a pit-bull himself. I anticipate every possible objection and get myself into a Zen-like state. When it comes time to negotiate for real, I am centered and ready. I know that if I allow myself to be intimidated or provoked instead of remain-ing calm and professional, the negotiations are destined to fail.”

Now you might be thinking, “that’s all well and good… but times really are tough and money really is in short supply. So no matter how great a negotiator I might be, does it really matter if the money just isn’t there?”

“Yes, times are difficult for many right now and your odds of getting what you want at work might not be as high as they were five years ago,” Milazzo concedes. “But why give up before you even start? What’s to be gained from that? I believe it’s better to ask and not receive than to not ask and to meekly settle for less than you deserve.”

“Besides, it’s when times are hard that raw talent and know-how really count,” she adds. “Right now, more than ever, you de-serve to get paid what you’re worth. Don’t let anyone — including yourself — forget just how much you’re bringing to the table.” ∆
