2014 Pinewood Derby Race Results

Race Day

O ne hundred pinewood derby cars entered this year’s

Central Section Pinewood Derby held March 22 at

Highway Assembly of God in Fredericksburg. Rang-

ers from nine outposts from throughout the section participat-

ed.

A special addition to this year’s derby activities included

static displays by the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office,

which featured the department’s SWAT vehicle, police cruis-

er and appearance by a search-and-rescue horse team.

Bob Randall’s return with his dragster was also a hit with

Rangers during their breaks from racing their pinewood cars,

as were the popular craft time and video race games.

Rev. Dick Jackson, pastor at Highway Assembly of God,

presented the devotion during the opening program for the

derby, which also featured the presentation of the colors by a

squad of Gold Medal of Achievement recipients in the sec-

tion.

F orty years ago I entered a pinewood derby. It was a dismal car, but the joy I ex-

perienced still brings a smile to my face. Shortly thereafter, both of my parents passed away and I never built another pinewood derby car. Last year I was not involved with Royal Rangers when Outpost 215 senior commander Randy Johnson asked me if I wanted to bring my son on Wednesday nights to help him build his car. (My son is currently a Ranger Kid in the outpost.) I was amazed at how many kids hungered for adulation and instruction. My heart was broken when I realized that the kids I had seen with smiles in church on Sun-day had no father, or their father was in jail, too busy or just wasn’t interested in participating. My minimal knowledge and skill be-came an invaluable asset in the children’s lives, but best of all my son and I bonded over a block of wood. I was hooked. Our car wobbled down the track that year and ex-cept for design, was barely no-ticed. Well, it has been over a year and I have been committed ever since to teaching the Ranger Kids every Wednesday night. This year, Marcus and I com-bined every bit of knowledge and wisdom we could gather and de-signed what we thought was the

perfect car. He said it was “perfect” because he wrote on it “Son of God!” Then the night be-fore the race I dropped the car and the front end broke off just be-hind the axles. My heart sank. I panicked, but a nearby Expedi-tion Ranger had some super glue and I glued the broken car back together. My son came bounding up to me (not knowing the car had been broken) and said, “Dad, we need to pray for the car and the race.” How right he was! To my surprise he not only prayed for his car, but for the other kids, and that if he or the other

kids’ cars didn’t win that they would still be able to smile. I confessed to breaking his car and God honored his prayer. He smiled, but did not gloat when his car won just about every race, ulti-mately winning the overall fastest time. God used a broken car to teach us that the excellence of power is His and not ours.

Camp iGovern. All of these have been real adventures for me and I don’t plan to forget them anytime soon. The idea behind character is your hobbies, skills, talents, per-sonality, and other things that de-fine you. A well-built character means knowing what you can or cannot do well and knowing your likes and dislikes. Of course, eve-ryone has character flaws. For me, I need to not take what people say personally all the time. However,

I ’m David Hannold, born Oct. 18, 1997 and I became a Chris-tian at around age 6 and have

been part of Royal Rangers for as long as I can remember. As a re-quirement for my GMA, I read “A Guy's Journey to Manhood” by Doug Marsh. This book had been split into three parts: Adventure, Character, and Task. To me, Adventure is some kind of unusual or abnormal event that occurs to you and possibly others around you. Within “A Guy's Journey to Manhood,” it went on to point out two dif-ferent kinds of adventure. There’s a common adventure where it’s an adventure that everyone takes. For example, a road trip to see relatives, tak-ing up a business opportunity, or finding out what you’re go-ing to have for dinner. The other kind of adven-ture is a special adventure. As per the name, this is an adven-ture that is suited by God for you or for a very small group of people. My unique adven-tures have been Ranger events like Pow Wows and hiking up Old Rag Mountain. Others are going to camps about govern-ment known as TeenPact and

character can be improved by the adventures we take. Adventure will shape your character. Then there's your Task. This basically means your life calling or dream. I received my calling at Camp iGovern. Simply put, I was praying and God spoke in my ear. He told me to enter the world of politics. On the last day, they (the camp directors) asked people while we were all in one room if anything significant happened. I said that I was most definitely go-

ing into the world of law and government. That got some cheers let me tell you. But even knowing my life calling, I know that’s not my end goal. I can truthfully say that I have never directly wit-nessed and therefore lead someone to Christ. That is truly my highest task and goal. Overall, this book has opened my eyes to things in a new way and to help define who I need to be. I will say one thing however; any book (other than the Bible) can’t sum up how to run your life that fast. But while this book is not able to get someone fully on the right track, it will help a lot.

His was the 524th GMA awarded in the Potomac District.
