Un Mensaje de la Directora Ejecutiva

Estimados Miembros Jubilados,

Atentamente,

Dear Retired Members,

Our Retired Members Division motto is “Retired but Active,” and that has never been more true than it is today. As Union President George Gresham writes in this issue, we are facing unprecedented challenges to vital programs like Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. Many of today’s seniors have only these benefits, and their own savings, to rely on in retirement. Too often, it is not enough.

But you are different. For more than 70 years, 1199SEIU members have been able to depend on their Funds. We have grown from a single benefit plan covering a few hundred pharmacists to a whole family of Funds supporting 400,000 workers, retirees and family members. And as our Funds have grown, our Retired Members Division has grown, too. Thousands of 1199SEIU members are retiring each year. Today, more than 100,000 of you receive a regular pension check, and 55,000 of you receive health coverage that supplements your Medicare benefits.

Our benefits are valuable, rare and worth protecting. Today, fewer than one in five retirees receives a pension or health coverage through their employers. More than 80 percent of retirees lucky enough to have health coverage through their employers at all have to pay a monthly premium—a cost that many seniors just cannot afford. At your Benefit and Pension Funds, we work hard every day, with your help and the help of our active members, to preserve our benefits in the face of escalating healthcare costs, and provide you with the health coverage and retirement security that so few retired workers enjoy.

Of course, your Retired Members Division offers you other opportunities to stay active and connect with other retirees. You can enjoy a range of classes, from arts to fitness, as well as your regular chapter meetings and other get-togethers.

Your Benefit and Pension Funds are always here to support you. If you have any questions about your health or pension benefits, please don’t hesitate to call our Retiree Services Representatives at (646) 473-8666 or (800) 892-2557.

President’s MessageMensaje de la Presidenta

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As we welcome the arrival of spring, the warmer temperatures and longer days are sure to help us continue to fulfill our pledge, as 1199SEIU retirees, to remain “Retired but Active.” In fact, this is perhaps the perfect time of year to go outside and get moving!

As a retired healthcare worker—I spent 40 years as a clinical laboratory technologist—I saw firsthand the value of quality healthcare benefits. We are fortunate, as 1199SEIU retirees, to have supplemental health coverage, but we must do our part to stay well. And we know that getting preventive screenings and developing healthy habits are the best ways to avoid chronic illness.

On a related note, let me take a moment to thank all of you who have been regular visitors to the Retired Members Division or attended chapter meetings. As many of you know, a great way to stay active is by participating in classes and activities both at 330 West 42nd St. and our local chapters. I encourage you to check your monthly bulletin for class schedules, as there are choices to suit nearly every interest—from photography, drama and mindful meditation to yoga, dance, Tai Chi, Chi Gong and many other selections.

Last but not least, I’d like to thank the retirees who have stayed current with their Union dues and encourage those of you who may have fallen behind to restart your contributions. Supporting our Union is an important way to help ensure that future 199SEIU retirees have a voice.

In solidarity, Mary Stovall-Merrill

Estimados Hermanos y Hermanas:

A Message from / Un Mensaje de

GEORGE GRESHAMPRESIDENT / PRESIDENTE, 1199SEIU UNITED HEALTHCARE WORKERS EAST

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

It should not come as a surprise to 1199ers that working people these days have few friends in high places in Washington, DC. Despite his claim to represent the working class, President Trump has chosen a cabinet and a close circle of advisors that include only billionaires, mult-millionaires and a handful of retired generals.

These are the folks who attempted to destroy healthcare coverage for 24 million workers in order to give the wealthiest Americans nearly $1 trillion in tax cuts over the next decade. They are also the ones who developed Mr. Trump’s budget, which would eliminate or severely diminish legal services for the poor, family planning, Meals on Wheels, housing subsidies, public transportation, medical research, environmental protection, occupational safety and health, etc.

For all the promises about “bringing back jobs,” this is a government that opposes raising the federal minimum wage above $7.25 an hour (and includes many advocates for eliminating the minimum wage altogether). High on the legislative wish list are laws to curtail union organizing and collective bargaining. To be clear, this is not a worker-friendly government. Most employers—including some of our own—are thrilled.

The president’s anti-worker agenda is certain to encourage employers to try to take back our hard-earned gains, just as his xenophobia and racism sparked a wave of attacks on immigrants, Jewish cemeteries and Islamic mosques.

Our veteran 1199ers, you retirees, helped build this Union. Our members have jobs. Millions of our fellow workers can’t say that. Most of the new jobs created since the crash of 2008—the jobs that news commentators mention when they describe the “recovery”—are part-time jobs, or temp jobs or low-wage service jobs.

Most 1199ers have some form of job security, or at least on-the-job security where we can’t be fired without cause. Most other workers do not. Most of us receive periodic wage increases. Most other workers do not. We have some form of pension or retirement security. Most other workers do not. We have some form of health benefits. Most other workers do not. Perhaps most important of all, as 1199SEIU, we are not alone. We have one another and the collective strength of many thousands of brothers and sisters. We employ that strength not just on our jobs, but also to improve the lives of our families, our communities and working people as a whole when we fight for the $15 minimum wage; for protection of immigrant communities and their rights; in support of women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, civil rights and an end to police abuse; in support of our public schools; and in defense of our environment, clean air and clean water.

With an anti-worker administration and Congress in control of Washington, and the encouragement they give to employers to take back our hard-earned gains, are you ready to fight to protect our pensions and health coverage in the difficult months ahead? I have great confidence in your positive response.

In solidarity,

George Gresham

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,

George Gresham
