THANK YOU

My Journey as a Priest of 25 Years (Continued from last week.)

As a pastor I used to celebrate three masses on Sunday in different villages. In the beginning of my ministry I did not have any vehicle to go to the villages, so I used to depend on the public transport which was often unreliable. Some-times I used to miss the bus, so I used to walk to reach the village to celebrate the Mass—around 25 miles round trip to one village which was very interior. Those days the roads in India were not laid well and the connectivity to such area was inadequate. Later my diocese gave me a motor bike to go to the mission stations to celebrate masses. But the roads were not so good to drive, so I developed severe back pain. Looking for additional help for my mission, one day I went to invite the religious sisters who serve at the shrine of our Lady of Good Health to help me in my parish. Before leaving there I went to the church and knelt down to pray the rosary. I prayed for the intercession of Our Lady of the Good Health for the healing of my back ache, which was becoming worse by day. After that I went to visit my priest friend 30 miles away on my motor bike, and realized that my back pain had miraculously disappeared. My responsibility as pastor in my parish gave me a lot of pasto-ral experience, joy and dedication to continue my call to be the witness of the Master who called me. Each incident added to the determination I had as a Priest. Later I was appointed as the Priest in charge at the Centre for Evangelization from 2002 to 2008. Thus during my 6-year tenure I had the joy of serving the people of over 300 villages, through preaching the Word of God, screening religious films, and motivating them. There is no limit to how we could be instrument to God’s ministry. All we need is to be open to respond to His call. Those six years were packed with various activities and it was a fruitful mis-sion. After this ministry I felt a call to serve beyond the geographical borders and accepted to be an Associate Pastor from 2008-2011, in a parish in New York. The parish was a big one with a huge number of faithful. There my pas-toral activities included being a moderator of religious education for 600 chil-dren with whom I spent 3 hours a day from Monday to Thursday. On the weekends we used to have 7 masses. (To be continued next week.)

Keep in Prayer We pray for parish-ioner Nancy Kroll, age 75, who died April 23. Nancy resid-ed at Care Partners in Medford. Please also keep her entire family in prayer at this time, including parishioner and sister Deb (Dennis) Komarek and many other relatives. A Memorial Mass will be cel-ebrated Fri., Aug. 7 (her birthday) at 11 am, with visitation beginning at 10 am at the church. Please also pray for Harvey Mann who died recently. Harvey is brother to parishioner Cliff (Tammy) and brother-in-law to Velma Mann. Keep him and the entire Mann family in your prayers.

May Nancy and Harvey rest in the peace and joy of God.

Make A Joyful Noise Week Those who shared their emails at the parish were made aware of a number of opportunities the week of Apr. 20th to wish Father Raj a Happy Anniver-sary—from “Honk for a Happy Anniver-sary,” to phone calls, yard signs, post-ing your prayer offerings for him on the bulletin board and more. But one event included a prank. Father Raj was ticketed by our local police. Father wasn’t sure what was happen-ing at first when Officer Beckstrand arrived with the lights on, and a short siren blowing. The officer said he had to “ticket” Father. Father was a bit per-plexed, until he heard the tickets being issued were actually to our local pizza parlor—a big relief for him! You can see his expression here—of both sur-prise—AND relief. Blessings Father, for being such a good sport!

Honor Your Father and Mother Dear Friends, we have just stepped into the month of May. May is very significant for us Catholics, as it is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our loving Mother. In his 1965 encyclical, Mense Maio, Pope Paul VI wrote about the importance of Mary’s intercession for the entire world, explaining that those who encoun-ter her encounter her Son, Jesus. The importance of Mother Mary in the eyes of God and thus in our life can be described through the words of St. Louis Marie de Montfort, a great Marian devotee who in his book the “True Devotion to Mary” says—”God the Father gath-ered all the waters together and called them the seas. He gathered all His grace together and called it Mary.” Mary is the mediator who brought the Savior into the world. Great miracles have taken place through her intercessions. Further to emphasize the power bestowed to Mary I quote again Saint Louis, “God the Holy Spirit entrusted his wondrous gifts to Mary, his faithful spouse, and chose her as the dispenser of all he possesses, so that she distributes all his gifts and graces to whom she wills, as much as she wills, how she wills and when she wills. No heavenly gift is given to men/women which does not pass through her virginal hands.” (True Devotion of Mary). How to receive this grace? Well it’s very simple—through the recitation of the Holy Rosary. I invite all my Parish Community, each member in our Parish community to pray earnestly to God through her intercession. The easiest and surest way of seeking God’s blessing is through the Holy Rosary, for it is a mighty weapon against all the evil powers. Mary lived a life of humility, yet her trust in God and in His plan has made her the Queen of Heaven and earth. This reminds me of 1 Samuel 17, the confrontation between Goliath, the mighty 9-foot giant and David, merely a shepherd boy who courageously accepts the challenge of the mighty warrior. David, armed with the blessings of Samuel, “Go, the Lord be with you,” steps forward. He chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in hand, ap-proached Goliath. Meanwhile, Goliath, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he des-pised him. He said to David, “Am I a dog, which you come at me with sticks?” And then he cursed David by his gods. David said to Goliath, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel.” As the Goliath, the Philistine, moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and Goliath fell face down on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand, he struck down the Philis-tine, killing him. For us the sling symbolizes the Holy Rosary, the five stones are the five dec-ades of each mystery of the Rosary. David was able to triumph over Goliath with one stone, that’s to say that we are able to triumph over Satan’s snares and all the evil forces through the Rosary which is prayed with complete trust in God and in His power. Evil is constantly in war against God’s plan, therefore we need to be constantly on guard against evil and consciously stay attached to God through the intercession of Mary, our Holy Mother. Armored with the Holy Rosary, we will be able to defeat any Goliaths who come into our life, be it in the form of illness, misfortunes, failures or temptations, or the corona virus. The smooth stones which are rosary will always see us through all the hard-ships. David fought with Goliath to save others (the Israelites), and we too, on our turn, pray for those in most need. The world had never been in more need of her intercession as today, with the whole world being inflicted with the Pan-demic COVID-19, we are directly witnessing the disaster it has been causing. Let’s remain firm in our faith in God and pray the whole Rosary individually or with the family. God will definitely hear our prayer through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. Let’s make a conscious effort this month to encounter Mary, to encounter her son, Jesus Christ. —-Father Raj

Raj: Baker’s Basket for India This is the last week to get your ticket money in for the “Basket for India.” Drawing will be Mon., May 11th. Cost is $1 per ticket. Place your money in a white en-velope marked “Basket for India.” Put your name and phone number on the outside of the envelope. Drop your envelope in the basket in the center aisle of the church by next Sun., May 10. Tickets will be made out at the office for you. These donations will be given directly to Father Raj, who in turn will send the money to his home diocese in India. For that reason, ticket money is not part of your “parish giving.” (Note: Father Raj was not involved in this idea in any way to raise money for his home dio-cese, but he graciously accepts this token of generosity from us, as a parish gift, in honor of his 25th.)
