TIDEWATER PLANTATION COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION 1 President’s Message Cathy Weis, BOD President How sad that we are entering the beautiful month of May while our world is suffering from this horrible pandemic! As I write this, over 600,000 cases have been confirmed in the United States and nearly 35,000 deaths from COVID-19. A couple of weeks ago we were at the 3,000 death mark, so unfortunately this will continue to get much worse before improving. I fully expect that by the time you read this we could be close to 50,000 deaths from the Coronavirus in the US. In our lifetime I don’t believe we have ever experienced such a tragedy. We are all in this together and we will get through this together if everyone remains vigilant and follows the CDC (Center for Disease Control) guidelines. The best sources for up-to-date information on COVID-19 are the following: www.cdc.gov www.who.int News Break: Local and Breaking: a great app that can be downloaded to your phone or tablet As of this writing there are nearly 150 cases in Horry County with 7 deaths, including a few cases confirmed in our zip code, but we must all do our part to keep it that way. This means staying home, washing hands frequently (soap and water is better than hand sanitizer), ordering groceries and take-out food and wearing a mask when in public. Please also look after your neighbors. Our Good Samaritan group has offered to shop for those who cannot and their contact information has been published in email blasts. If you are not getting the email blasts, please contact Chelsa Fenner at 843-663-3500 or [email protected] to be added to the list. Also you may contact Chelsa and her staff to get a copy of the list of Good Samaritans. Many have complained that some of our facilities like the Beach Cabana and adjacent parking lots and tennis courts, to name a few, are closed. For a while, the beach was open to anyone who had private access. Tidewater does not have private access; the beach access next to our Cabana is a public access path into which our gate opens. People argue that they could go to the beach and not use the Cabana. This is true, but to do so one would be using the public access path which is currently banned or would be entering the beach from someone’s private property which is trespassing. While many may still want to do this, your Association does not want to encourage that behavior. A similar argument is made for tennis. People are exercising, in the fresh air and far enough apart. However, everyone touches the gates and nets and is sharing tennis balls. Again, while it may seem safe, we do not want to encourage it. I am sorry that some people don’t agree with our closure decisions, but we would rather you be angry with us than unsafe. Our Board meeting held on Thursday, April 2 was a virtual meeting for Board members and the Management staff as we used a “Go To Meeting” application which worked very well. We could all see and hear each other, but we were practicing our “social distancing” by being apart. Residents were able to dial in and listen and provide input as necessary. Going forward, virus or not, we may continue to use the dial-in feature for any resident who would like to attend our Board meetings but may not be able to leave their home. I pray that all of us will be looking back on this soon and enjoying a normal life again in Tidewater. Stay safe! Board Notes David Chambers, BOD Secretary At the regular meeting of the TPCA Board of Directors held on Thursday, April 2, the following actions were taken: Tennis Rules – The Board approved changes to the tennis rules within the Rules and Regulations document. Property Management MessageChelsa Fenner, CMCA, AMS, Community Manager

I think I can speak for everyone when I say what a crazy couple of months this has been. Each day is different and we are all learning to cope with this new lifestyle we’ve been forced into. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. I encourage you to take nice strolls through the neighborhood, do some work in your yards, FaceTime your loved ones, or take up a new hobby. There are also many virtual classes, such as yoga or cooking classes, available online. Most importantly, let’s come together as one and remember “this too, shall pass.” I also want to recognize your Board of Directors. They have been unified during this madness and have shown true care for the Tidewater Community. Cathy, Roger, Jim, Brian, Dave, Mary Jane and Chris - you all do a tremendous job and I am thankful to work alongside each of you.

Below are some general reminders:

• Please know that security signs are not allowed within Tidewater. Decals are allowed on the windows and doors, but the security signs are not permitted.

• Contractor working hours within Tidewater are Monday-Friday, 7AM – 7PM and Saturday, 9AM – 4PM. This is important information to relay to your contractors.

• The speed limit in Tidewater is 20 mph. Please make sure you are adhering to that speed limit, and please remember to pay attention while driving. This is also good information to relay to your contractors.

• The Beach Cabana (currently closed) is open to Property Owners and their immediate family members (parents, children, and grandchildren). Only immediate family members can be at the Cabana without an Owner present, and these individuals must be registered in our system. Other guests are allowed to visit the Cabana, but the Property Owner must be present. Please remember that glass containers, such as bottles, are not allowed at the Beach Cabana and pets are not allowed in the Beach Cabana. I am hoping the Tidewater facilities will be open by the time you are reading this.

• Both parking lots at the Beach Cabana are normally open to all Property Owners (currently closed due to COVID-19). The auxiliary parking lot at the Beach Cabana is open to immediate family members of Property Owners (parents, children, and grandchildren) and their vehicles must have a special pass displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle. This pass can be obtained from Security at the front gate. In order to obtain this pass, these immediate family guests must be registered in our system. For more information on registering your immediate family guests, please contact the onsite management office at 843-663-3500. Also, please remember that there should only be one car parked per unit/lot.

I also want to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there. Being a mom is the absolute greatest privilege of my life. I am so fortunate.

“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.”

- Tony Robbins

Into May we go, and thank you to all residents for the help, communication and teamwork during the constantly changing nature of the COVID-19 situation. This is a time that tends to change day to day, and everyone has been great about checking in on each other and pulling together in time of need. The importance of communication is paramount, so please make sure that you are receiving both the Tidewater Plantation email as well as those from your specific HOA. If you seem to be missing one or the other, reach out to [email protected], or call 843-385-3995.

With the increase of COVID-19 cases throughout the United States, it is important to stay vigilant about hand washing and social distancing. With local stores closing and inventory shortages, it is becoming extremely common and helpful to order items online. The virus remains on cardboard much longer than in air. To reduce risk, it has been recommended to leave the outer packaging outside of the home, carry only the contents inside and then break down the packaging and put directly into the recycle bin.

The virus does not seem to survive long on plastic or paper bags, but also be aware that these are transferred from one surface to another, so there is a slight risk of transfer to inner contents. The main thing is to stay safe, be cautious, wash hands often, and be proactive. The television show MythBusters did an episode on bacteria spreading and you can still find the video online, which is an extremely eye opening example of how easily these things can move. You can stream old episodes on go.discovery.com, which is available to anyone with a cable television provider. You can also view a clip at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=232&v=3wPKBpk7wUY&feature=emb_logo

Please be sure that you are all being careful and information with updates will continue to come out in email blasts. You can follow all of the local executive orders from the governor at https://governor.sc.gov/executive-branch/executive-orders. The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) has also created educational posters, videos, factsheets, and intervention training to help you contribute to prevention efforts. These free materials are available in multiple languages for you to distribute, post and circulate as you deem appropriate. http://www.cdc.gov/nonpharmaceutical-interventions/tools-resources/educational-materials.html.

Teal Lake VillageTeal Lake Village is ending the staircase project with only touch up, handrail, and painting to go. The painting will take place this spring, as will the normally scheduled building maintenance. All projects could be affected by the changes of ordinances put

This would be a great opportunity to take part in this community effort and come out to join your neighbors in the betterment of Teal Lake Village.

This is extremely important in the event that an emergency situation would arise and also for day to day communication. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to [email protected] or call 843-385-3995.

Although it is not an executive order, we would like to ask that all residents be thoughtful when using the elevators. We would like to ask that you allow residents to ride alone if at all possible to avoid the possible spread of COVID-19.

Outstanding Performance of the Quarter Award – 1st Quarter, 2020Eddie Link

Eddie was born and raised in North Wilkesboro, located in the foothills of North Carolina. Although a small town, it had a great entrepreneurial spirit, and was the location where several national companies were founded, including Lowe’s Hardware, Lowes Foods Stores, and Holly Farms Poultry. Wilkes County was also famous for being the “moonshine capital of the world” and the birthplace of NASCAR. It was truly a great place to grow up.

Eddie received a bachelor’s degree in economics & business management from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC (Go Wolfpack!). He is also a graduate of the North Carolina School of Banking at UNC-Chapel Hill, and the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University.

Eddie spent 40 years as a banker in the state of North Carolina. He began his career in his hometown at Northwestern Bank. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, he was moved to the wonderful city of Charlotte, NC where he worked for First Union National Bank, Wachovia Bank and Wells Fargo Bank. He spent his entire career in the Cash Management / Treasury Management areas of banking.

Eddie is a Certified Cash Manager and was a member of the North Carolina Treasury Management Association and the Association for Financial Professionals throughout his banking career. In recognition of his expertise in the area of electronic payments, Eddie was elected as chairman of the board of directors of the North Carolina Automated Clearing House Association, and also served on the board of directors of the EastPay Automated Clearing House Association, and the National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA).

Eddie and his wife Jane built a home in Tidewater in 2009 – 2010 and loved living in the Bluffs section of Tidewater. They truly enjoyed all of the social activities of Tidewater, particularly the concerts at the Amenity Center. Being members of the O.D. Shag Club, they especially enjoyed all of the beach music concerts by the Band of Oz, Blackwater Band, the Tonez Band, Gary Lowder and Smokin’ Hot, etc.

Given Eddie’s financial background, he joined the Tidewater Budget & Finance Committee in 2017, and was elected as the chair of the committee in 2018. Serving on this committee was truly an honor and a privilege, as the committee is comprised of Tidewater volunteers with a tremendous amount of financial experience and expertise. The committee works very hard to support the financial goals set by the Board of Directors, and also to be good stewards of the money contributed by the homeowners to the Tidewater Plantation Community Association.

Eddie (an avid NC State Wolfpacker) and Jane (an avid UNC Tar Heel) live in a “house divided,” splitting loyalties between the fierce rivalries of these two universities. They have three sons and five wonderful grandchildren, ranging in age from four months to eight years. Earlier this year, Eddie and Jane made a very difficult decision to leave Tidewater to return to North Carolina to be closer to their grandchildren. There was a “tug of war” between staying at the beach or being closer to the grandchildren (and having more involvement with their growth and development.) In the end, the grandchildren won the “tug of war.”

After making this difficult decision, they decided that they would only trade “beach life” for “lake front life,” and they found a beautiful home at High Rock Lake, near Lexington, NC. The Links miss all their friends at Tidewater and hope they will come visit them for some boating, tubing, and waterskiing on High Rock Lake!

Nominating Committee Seeks CandidatesRoger Quinn, BOD Vice President and Nominating Committee Chairperson.

As a homeowner, you have an important interest in the future of Tidewater.

How can you be assured that our community will be properly maintained and cared for? One way is to volunteer on one of the committees. Another way is to serve on the Tidewater Plantation Community Association Board (TPCA). As a Board Member, you will share your experience and contribute to important decisions that will have a positive impact on everyone. It’s your chance to work with other community members to come up with creative ideas on how to make your community run better.

The Nominating Committee is seeking candidates to run for two positions on the TPCA Board of Directors. Board members serve a three-year term and are eligible to run again.

You must be a homeowner or the designated representative of an owner that is a corporation or partnership or other entity of multiple owners; all must be in good standing. Any member may nominate herself/himself by completing a Board Nominee Application and submit no later than Friday, July 24. Applications will be available at the TPCA Administrative Building, online, or from a member of the Nominating Committee.

Your Nominating Committee members are respected community volunteers who have served on committees and/or the TPCA Board of Directors. Committee members are available to discuss and inform residents about the duties of a Board Member. Tidewater Author’s CircleLeonard Di Gregorio

The Tidewater Author’s Circle is proud to announce the release of the third novel, Ocher’s Wind by Teal Lake resident, Mike Gipson. This latest book continues the series from Ocher’s Dawn and Ocher’s Rain which introduced the Philippine assassin to the United States. Mike’s western series takes place during the 1800’s in the American West. All three books are available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback editions. You can contact Mike at [email protected].

The Tidewater Author’s Circle is a group of published authors meeting periodically to exchange ideas on publishing and marketing. All published Tidewater authors are invited to attend. If interested, please email me at [email protected].

Tastebuds & Soup and SaladMarty Turnauer & Audrey Poole

Spring Tastebuds and Soup and Salad have been cancelled until the fall. Please watch for an email and newsletter notice announcing when the groups will be forming again.

Teal Lake Village ConcertLeonard Di Gregorio

Teal Lake Village residents want to thank Roger Quinn for his concert in Teal Lake. On Friday, April 3 Roger entertained all the residents around the lake. The show lasted from 4 PM until 5 PM when the batteries in his keyboard ran out. Please note

everyone stayed at least six feet away from each other. Thank you, Roger, for this impromptu entertainment. It was a “feel good” time needed by all.

Safety ReminderDiane Williams

Spring is here. The weather is beautiful, and with stay-at- home restrictions, it is a wonderful time to stroll through our neighborhood or take a ride on your bicycle. With so many of us out enjoying this weather, please be cautious when bike riding and use good judgment with reasonable speed to ensure everyone’s safety.

Tennis Anyone?Jackie Burton

Tidewater has community tennis sessions for the men on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9AM (8AM in the summer). For the women, it is scheduled for Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9AM (8AM in the summer). Mixed tennis sessions are on Thursdays at 4PM and Saturdays at 9AM (8AM in the summer). Players of all levels are welcome. We play doubles only and the format is round robin. If you are new to the community, this is an excellent opportunity to meet others. We welcome all new players and look forward to seeing you on the courts.

WOW, The Happiest Birthday EverTami Lee

Our family wants to thank our wonderful neighbors! When I put out a message to our WOW group (Welcoming Our Women) to stop by our house to honk horns for my daughter Sadie’s 4th birthday, I thought maybe 5 or 6 people might show up. Boy, was I wrong! Car after car lined up and honked their horns. Neighbors also brought handmade gifts, decorations, and signs. You have no idea what this meant to my little girl who told me later that evening that “this was the best day ever.” What I thought might be her worst birthday ended up the best. We are so blessed to live in this community!
