SMS students are among the most courteous, well-behaved, and academically- focused that I have experienced as an educator. Additionally, SMS has some of the most talented, dedicated, and profes- sional faculty and staff with whom I have had the privilege to work. I look forward to continuing next year the good work that has been accomplished this year. Mr. Beachy and I wish everyone a safe and restful summer break. Please save the date for Open House on Thursday, August 1, 2019, from 4:00-7:00pm. Student schedules will be available for pick-up beginning at 4:00pm in the gym. There will also be informational tables available for athletics, PTO, transportation, food service, and more. At 4:45pm, please make your way to the auditorium for a brief welcome address at 5:00pm. After the presentation, at 5:30pm families will visit their child’s classes on an abbreviated bell schedule to meet the teachers, learn about their classes, and receive a copy of the teachers’ procedures, routines, and supply lists. More information about Open House will be mailed home over the summer. Please update your contact information with the SMS office if you are moving. As a friendly reminder, please encourage your middle schooler to continue to read daily this summer. Reading regu- larly will help prevent summer learning loss, raise reading skills, and increase vocabulary. The graphic to the left shows how a student who reads 20 minutes a day all school year will have read for a total of 60 full school days, which is equiva- lent to reading almost two million words! Summer reading is essential to keep students’ reading skills strong and could even bring their reading level up by the start of school on Au- gust 5 th . Have a great summer!
