Hilsner til en og alle.

“It’s May, it’s May, the lusty month of May!” (From Camelot by Lerner and Lowe). The weather seems to be softening a bit and the trees are starting to leaf out. Winter is

behind us at last!

Our annual membership meeting was a huge success, thanks in part to Ruth Gibson who alerted us that Solvei Larson would be in the area and would like to attend our Lodge meeting. She was a wonderful addition to our evening. Many awards were presented to Lodge members for their continued membership in Sons of Norway and for recruiting new members for the Lodge. Mange takk to all who helped make the evening so enjoyable. May is a month of celebrations; May 1st (International Day of the Worker) is a big day in Europe, May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) commemorates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, and of course we have May 17th, Norwegian Constitution Day (May 17, 1814). We will be celebrating Syttende Mai at our May Lodge meeting. The junior lodge will be joining us for this special event. In keeping with Norwegian tradition, we will have a barnas tog (children’s parade) and will be serving varmt pølse (hot dogs) wrapped in lefse, and an ice cream treat. From what I understand, in Norway Syttende Mai is all about the children and ours will be also. Lowell Johnson will be presenting a short video about Syttende Mai and Ron and Susan Stow will be assembling a special gift to give to all lodge members attending. Children and grandchildren who are not part of the Junior Lodge are also welcome to attend. Please let me know, by May 6th, how many will be attending so we can ensure that we have enough food available. You can contact me at: 651-433-2008 or via email at [email protected]. Our May meeting is the last meeting we will have at Gustavus Adolphus until next September. Our June meeting will be the annual picnic at Island Lake Park. Please contact Mary Beth Mutchler at our May meeting to make reservations. You may also contact her by telephone at: 651-484-8872 or via email at [email protected]. A delicious chicken dinner will again be catered by Magnolia’s. The program for the evening will be a drone demonstration by Air Bears. Their mission is to utilize UAS "drone" technology for the benefit of all life. Air Bears has created a global network of volunteer RC pilots dedicated to aiding local authorities in any capacity including, but not limited to, search and rescue and aerial surveillance assistance to law enforcement agencies and other emergency services. Jean and I have seen the presentation, it is interesting and educational and demonstrates how drones may be used for more than just fun. Be sure to read the June Brevet for final details on this fun event.

NORSO by Don Halvorson

On July 2, 1942, the 1st Special Service Force was activated. This elite force would be a joint American/ Canadian contingent, consisting of young men who spent most of their time in the outdoors. Under the code name Operation Plough, the unit would be trained to carry on a guerilla campaign behind enemy lines in Norway. The trainees would be trained as infantry units, with additional training in airborne, winter and mountain warfare. Seventy-four of the trainees were volunteers who had begun their training with the previously activated 99th Battalion (Separate) in Camp Hale, Colorado. They had been recruited because of their Norwegian descent and some knowledge of the Norwegian language. In 1943, the recruits were moved from Colorado, to their new base, Bethesda, Maryland. There, the Army’s newly named Norwegian Special Operation Group (NORSO) went through an extensive, punishing training program on the converted greens and fairways of the Congressional Country Club. In addition to normal training, they were trained in demolition, small unit amphibious actions, and the confiscation and operation of trains. Arriving in England in December 1943, they waited for their chance to reach Norway. That chance came on the evening of March 24, 1945. Under the command of O.S.S. Major William Colby, 35 commandos loaded in eight B-24 Liberators, lifted off a Scottish runway. They were bound for frozen Lake Jævsjo, 200 miles south of the Arctic Circle on the Swedish Norwegian border. Codenamed Operation Rype, their mission was to link up with a local resistance group, sabotage the Nordland Railway, and slow down the departure of 150,000 German troops from northern Norway. Their primary target was the 335-foot Grana Bridge near the small village of Snåsa. Colby and his three

commandos parachuted from their lead plane and landed successfully on the iced-over lake. Waiting for them was the resistance. Through the night, 12 more found their way to the drop zone from the nearby woods. Three planes totally missed the target, and returned to Scotland without dropping their troops. Another plane dropped their group in neutral Sweden. Several days later, four bombers appeared again, trying another drop, but the weather suddenly turned to mist, and the planes again turned back. Three made it back, the fourth crashed in the Orkneys, killing 13 men. On April 6, an attempt was made to drop the rest of the team, but cloud cover again made that impossible. Another drop was never attempted. With 17 men, Colby’s options were limited. Attacking the well-guarded bridge at Snåsa was a risk. Briefly they considered stealing a train, but finally decided to destroy another bridge, a shorter span at Targen. It was totally unguarded, and destroying it would halt traffic for at least several days. After a grueling five-day 100 mile march through a sleet-storm, they reached their objective on April 14. The team proceeded to cut all telephone lines, climb down a steep river gorge, and set the charges. At 6:30am, the bridge disappeared in a loud explosion. Now it was a race to escape. The noise would draw every German for miles around. Coyle feared a German spotter plane would soon be in the air. They started back to Jævsjo, and intended to take a short rest halfway, since no one had slept in two days. But before they could stop, word reached them that German mountain troops were hot on their trail. After planting mines in the snow, they raced for freedom,

skiing 56 straight hours, until, exhausted, they crossed the Swedish border on April 18. Surprise, Kill, Vanish: Operatives Take On Nazi Forces in Norway https://www.historynet.com/suprise-kill-vanish.htm

Benefits and Finances Spring is here ! It has been a long Minnesota Winter. For most of us, it is a time for renewal and planting of new seeds. I would

like to plant a seed about financial Security. It may be a time, to review existing certificates and coverage through products provided by Sons of Norway.

Sons of Norway can provide to you a complimentary Financial Security Analysis. This review includes a financial check up, and may discover changes or gaps in your financial planning. This check up is also available for your children or grandchildren. It is

never too early to set goals and to start a plan of action. Please contact me if you would like information regarding the financial Security Analysis. Thank you.

Counselor’s Corner On April 6th, five members of our Lodge attended the Zone 9 Leadership Conference that was held in Anoka. Chuck and Jean Draheim, Ron Stow, Heidi Walsh, and I met with several other Zone members as we learned and shared with one another. I would strongly encourage you to think about attending this annual meeting next January (2020). There are no stipulations to attend, just a willingness to meet, greet, and eat with other fun and active Sons of Norway members. I have always come away with new ideas and encouragement. I am really looking forward to Festival of Nations. This is another annual event that provides something for everyone. We need people to help on Monday, April 29, with Cooking Day. The crew makes krumkake—dozens, and dozens, and dozens. We also cook up a couple cauldrons of fruit soup. On Wednesday, May 1st, a group is needed to load, drive in, unload, and set up our Norway Café to be ready for the Opening Day on Thursday, May 2nd. We always need people wearing bunads and sweaters to work the front selling all our items. We also have several chairs and a couple tables for volunteers to butter lefse. And, you know what my mom always said, “Many hands make light work.” One of the best perks of working at the Festival of Nations in our Norway Café is the access to everyone else’s culture through food, dance, programs, and the Market Place. Please don’t miss out on the fellowship, food, and fun.

Blessings, Sharon Amann

(lodge meeting minutes, continued from page 3) Knaak, Kathy and Richard Vevang, Karen Lilley, Gayle Englund, Lare Strom and Karen Kiviluome. President Chuck Draheim called the meeting to order. The March minutes were accepted as printed in the Brevet.

1. Financial Benefits Counselor, Dave Okeson (sp?) presented the Lodge with a revenue-sharing check for over $229, earned through members insurance certificates. Please call him with any questions, needs, changes, and account reviews.

2. Recruitment Awards presented to Susan Stow, Dianne Anderson, Lenore Jesness, Margaret and Paul Dormody, and Jenna Stow. 3. Membership Longevity Awards presented for members who joined in years 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014. Golden

Member Certificates awarded to Leif and Linda Erickson. Congratulations and thanks to all! 4. Lodge met Sons of Norway membership recruitment goal for 2018 in October.

Meeting adjourned. Singing provided by special guest, Solvei Larsen of Bergen, Norway. Membership buffet dinner enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who helped set up for Lodge Meeting and Dinner, and a special thanks to those who stayed late to clean up. NEXT LODGE MEETING: Tuesday, May 14, 2019, beginning at 6:30 pm. Respectfully submitted, Heidi Slen Walsh

Junior Lodge Update On April 1st, April Fool’s Day, we think of harmless jokes and tricks to lighten the day. “I think you just ate a magpie’s egg,” is said by the Sami about someone easily fooled, as is the magpie. We learned about Sami Easter Festivities in Kautokeino, Norway. The World Championships in Reindeer Racing, the Sami Grand Prix, an impressive program of concerts and gigantic weddings, christenings and confirmations with everyone wearing their traditional best. The Easter Festival in Kautokeino is the high point of the year for the Sami. This festival is just before the start of the spring migration. The World Championship in reindeer racing are in two classes, on skis behind the reindeer or lying flat on a sledge around a racetrack on ice. Prizes are also awarded for the best costume. Lassoing championship contests are just as popular as the reindeer racing. Reindeer antlers are placed at different distances from the contestants. Peer Gynt is looking forward to performing on Saturday, May 4th on the World Stage at the River Centre. The children are on at 12:15 and our teens group at 1:20. We hope you will be able to see their performances!

Sports Medal Program The sports medal program is a way for members & their lodges to stay active and

share their enthusiasm for the Norwegian tradition of outdoor life and outdoor recreation: walking, skiing, biking, sports/fitness, swimming, and even Judo. You simply need to provide documentation of your activity. This year’s sports medals will be presented at the June picnic for activity from June 2018 - May 2019. For questions, please contact Jacqueline Carlone at 715-377-7578.

The Lodge Board of Directors is pleased to announce the "Bookcase Challenge"! You may recall that last year, Ron and Susan Stow's grandson constructed and donated a beautiful bookcase to our lodge.  It is used to store our library of books and other membership materials.  It is stored at Gustavus Adolphus Church and brought out at each of our Lodge meetings.  While constructed wonderfully and able to serve its purpose very well - it is in need of some "flair" and it needs to be easily identified as belonging to our Lodge. Here's where the challenge comes in!  Lodge members are encouraged to consider submitting an item to be used to identify our Bookcase as belonging to Synnove-Nordkap Lodge!  Submit an artistic or cultural portrayal of our Lodge Name, Lodge Number (1-008) and Sons of Norway to be encased in a framed holder installed on the

bookcase.  The framed holder will be constructed by Lynn Hoffmeyer and/or other members of the Lodge.   Items should be no larger than 14" w x 18" h x 1 and 1/2" thick/deep.  Painted items, needlepoint work, quilted patterns, relief carving, chip carving, knitting or other can be entered.  Please prepare and submit items to Lowell Johnson and/or Lynn Hoffmeyer by the Challenge deadline of Sept. 10 (our regular meeting date).  The Board will serve as Judges and select a winner or winners!  Prizes will be provided.  Contact Lowell Johnson at [email protected] for more information.
