Older Americans MonthEvery May, the Administration on Aging, part
of the Administration for Community Living, leads our nation’s observance of OlderAmericans Month. The 2018 theme, Engage atEvery Age, emphasizes that you are never tooold (or young) to take part in activities that canenrich your physical, mental, and emotionalwell-being. It also celebrates the many ways inwhich older adults make a difference in ourcommunities.
Participating in activities that promotemental and physical wellness, offering yourwisdom and experience to the next generation, seeking the mentorship of someone with morelife experience than you—those are just a fewexamples of what being engaged can mean. Nomatter where you are in your life, there is nobetter time than now to start. We hope you willjoin in and Engage at Every Age!
In honor of Older Americans Month therewill be a Fun Fair at Star Lanes Bowling Alley onFriday, May 4, 2018, from 10 AM-3 PM. Bri willbe attending the Fun Fair from 10:30 AM-12:30PM, so for those who are interested pleaseinquire at the Front Desk. Have Fun!
God Bless,Lauri

Hum and Strum forBetter Health
Music therapy uses songs, rhythms and instruments topositively influence brainfunctioning. This therapy, whichhas been practiced for about 60years, employs two techniques—passive listening and activemusic making. Passive listening, generally used for people withlimited mobility, allows patientsto sit and listen while engagingtheir brains. Active musicmaking involves playinginstruments or singing, whichhelps to strengthen muscles orboost skills that might havebeen compromised duringa trauma.
Many people can benefit frommusic therapy, and musicalability is not required. Here areways certain groups of peoplecan benefit from music therapy:
Stroke and dementia patients. For patients who have suffered astroke, playing an instrumentcan help build muscle in theweaker side of the body. Musictherapy helps dementia patientswork on their strength, but italso helps with memory.
Seniors. By engaging the brain, music and rhythm can increasephysical and mental function inolder adults.
Healthy patients. Musictherapy can help reduce stress byallowing the patient anemotional and physical outlet.People also use the passivelistening technique forrelaxation.
