Touching Torah
& Being Touched by Torah!
Rabbinic Thoughts Rabbi Jesse Gallop
Monroe Temple Beth El
Shavuot is the holiday where Jews celebrate receiving the Torah from God on Mount Sinai. It takes places 50 days after the 1st night of Passover. Shavuot is one of three Festival Holidays (with Sukkot and Pesach). It is our community’s tradition to hold Confirmation on Erev Shavuot. This year we will celebrate the important educa-tional milestone with 15 teenagers on Tuesday, May 30th at 7 pm. Our 10th grade class will lead the service and chant for us the 10 commandments from the Book of Exodus.
Traditionally associated with Shavuot is also the Book of Ruth. This book of the Bi-ble comes from the section of Writings. Ruth is one of the 5 Megillot (scrolls from the Bible) that we read associated with spring and summer holidays. It is a powerful text that shows devotion, love, and perseverance. Ruth is a Moabite woman mar-ried to a Jewish man who lives outside of the land of Israel. Ruth’s husband dies along with his brother and father. Ruth’s Mother-in-law, Naomi, tells her to return home. Instead Ruth utters deeply profound and touching words, “And Ruth said: 'Entreat me not to leave you, and to return from following after you; for whither you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my peo-ple, and your God my God.” The Jewish tradition understands this oath to represent one of the first formal conversions into Judaism. Ruth is seen as devoted, strong, and humble. Judaism even teaches that King David is her descendant.
Shavuot is harvest holiday, where Israelites would bring the first crops of the season to the Temple in Jerusalem, as an offering to God. It is also marked by studying throughout the night, remembering God’s revelation of Torah is a gift to be studied and by which we live. May we be inspired to keep learning, growing, and devoting ourselves to our God, our tradition, and our community. Please join us for Erev Sha-vuot on Tuesday, May 30th at 7 pm or for Yizkor (Memorial Service) on Wednesday, May 31st at 10 am.
Chag sameach!
