The idea of a day honoring mothers was first sug- gested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe, author of the well-known Civil War song, “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Anna Jarvis is credited as the woman who made this suggestion a reality. Her own mother, a social worker who worked with families and children, had felt there should be a day when all mothers are recognized for their countless contributions. When her mother died in 1905, Anna sought to honor her memory by seeking to win popular support for a day to recognize mothers. EAST LAKE AND MOTHER’S DAY:

A SPECIAL PLACE AND A VERY SPECIAL DAY

Rain, rain, everywhere. ELLOA residents are especially tuned in to the weather and so we are all quite aware it has been a very wet Spring. How wet and soggy? From March through the first two weeks of May we have seen some 15 inches of rain—the wettest spring in 21 years! The May rainfall total alone, just through Mother’s Day weekend, was 4.66 inches of rain, the wettest May since 1961. I am sure I am not the only person on the lake who was reminded of the childhood nurs-

ery rhyme:

Rain, rain go away Come again another day.

Rain, rain go away

Little Johnny wants to play.

All in all, Spring 2017 is the fifth wettest on record and it is not yet over. The good news—the silver lining in this rain cloud—is that our new dam has been doing a

superb job handling all of this extra water exactly as it was designed to do.

Fortunately, Lake East residents did finally see the rain go away in time for Mother’s Day weekend. The weather was stunningly beautiful: sunny and unseasonably warm for this time of year—one of the finest Mother’s Day weekends on East Lake I can remember. And ELLOA members took note: the lake was active with boats, pontoons, kayaks and children splashing around in the water. It was a fantastic,

unofficial opening weekend to EAST LAKE SUMMER 2017!

And why not? Mother’s Day weekend is a very special time of the year, the day we honor the one person in our lives who gave us life and nurtured us throughout our childhood and young adulthood. It is our mothers who, from the moment we are born, selflessly provide us with daily care and sustenance, see to all of our many needs, and provide us with unconditional love. Our mothers are always there for us, putting our needs above their own, whether putting Band-Aids on cuts and wounds, giving us hugs or wiping away our tears when we were afraid or upset. No doubt we all owe our Mothers a huge debt and gratitude for all of their love and sacrifice on

our behalf.

result of Anna’s tireless efforts, nearly every state in the Union celebrated Mother’s Day by 1911; within three years it be-came a national holiday. Today Mother’s Day is an international holiday celebrated throughout the world, including Canada,

the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, China, Japan and Turkey.

As we look forward to the end of Spring and the beginning of Summer season on the lake—when boating and swim-ming is at its peak—please keep in mind that SAFETY is everyone’s priority. Know and follow the ELLOA Safety Rules and Regulations. They are available online on our website or available from Linda Morris (933-9193). Rules will also available from our two Co-Chairs of the Safety Committee: Cis Littiken (933-2138) and Evert Yager (933-

2789). Feel free to contact Cis or Evert about any boating and water safety concerns you may have.

REMEMBER SAFETY FIRST: Fast boating and skiing is limited to the main lake from 12 to 5 pm daily; IDLE speed at all other times and places. When on the water, always use common sense and avoid unnecessary risks to fellow boaters,

swimmers and yourself. Let’s all have a great and safe summer water season together on the lake!

We have a new professional Fireworks Show planned for Saturday July 1st this year that will be conducted by Kevin C. Hendrixson’s company, Darkstar Pyro-Tactics, LLC. This marks a change from the past: Greg Robison in recent

years, and his father before him, put on our annual Fireworks display over the past several decades. Greg informed the Board a few months ago that he had decided it was time for a change. This led to our search for a replacement and, fortu-nately, we found a well-qualified person right in our community: Kevin also serves as the Town Building inspector. Our com-munity owes a debt of thanks to Greg and his father for their past service. And we want to welcome Kevin and his team as

our new Fireworks agents. We are all looking forward to what promises to be a spectacular new display this year!

Our Annual Meeting this year is on Saturday, July 8th at 10 AM at the ELLOA Clubhouse. Several ELLOA Board mem-

bers’ terms are expiring and elections will be held as normal. Board members and I will report on our activities this year and share more information about current and possible future projects. This year’s recipient of the Captain’s Award for Service will be announced and recognized. As always, the Annual Meeting is first and foremost for and about the community. Plan to

come out, see your neighbors, and communicate concerns and priorities with the Board.

Until then, best wishes for a great summer season on East Lake!

Boating Safe

ty

Just a little note to our members and their guests………………………….

Please remember to refresh your memory about the rules and regulations here on our lovely lake.

A few quick reminders: (more details on ELLOA website)

• Fast time is from noon to 5pm only. Idle only the other 19 hours of the day. Idle speed means no

wake/wave no wash – this usually consists of the slowest speed you can possibly go in your

boat which is just enough to propel it forward.

• No wake, no wash behind buoys always.

• Visiting water craft is never allowed.

• Water craft must be the personal property of a member (lot owner).

• Current stickers and lot numbers must be on each water craft.

• All motorized water craft operated during fast time must proceed counter-clockwise and no

closer than 40 feet from the shore line, docks or idle speed areas - slow moving water craft

must stay within 30 feet.

• Never cut across the lake during fast time – you must continue counter-clockwise to your de-

sired destination during fast time.

• Remember life jackets and an orange flag.

Thanks to everyone who slowed down this past weekend, 5/7/17, around people who were working

on their docks.

Please help us all to stay safe as we start our season of fun. Reminding your fellow boaters of the

rules and regulations may just save a life this year – following them saves us all.

Have a great time out there and feel free to pop over to lot 81 if you have any questions or concerns.

My home phone # is 317-933-2138, you must leave a message and I will call you back.

SUMMER SATURDAY BREAKFAST ON EAST LAKE

THE BEST VALUE IN FOOD AND FRIENDSHIP – WITH A PURPOSE THAT BENEFITS WHO?

YOU!!!!

In the mid 90’s, our family became a part of the wonderful East Lake family. We soon learned that

every Saturday morning in the summer, volunteers arrived to the ‘pole barn’ in the wee hours to start the

breakfast prep. I swear I could smell the coffee and the bacon from our dock. At that time, the Summer

Saturday morning breakfast was going strong. It was so popular, you had to go early to get a place to

park. It was so busy you had to go early to get a table. It was so savored, you had to go early before they

ran out of food.

I could not wait to get there – to see and talk to all the neighbors. I wanted to ask John what he

was using to catch all those bass, or to talk to the Smith’s about their gorgeous new boat, or to hear

whether Judy’s granddaughter made it to the state finals, or to see how Mr. Randolph was feeling after he

had kicked cancer.

The money from the breakfast has always gone toward the cost of unique expenses of the lake, such

as dredging the coves to create more clean water. It was meant to be a source of money for special needs of

the lake. It was set up in an effort to deter special assessments per lot owner.

With busy schedules, we have gotten away from this wonderful tradition. Let’s revive the Summer

Saturday breakfast. Let’s start with just four Saturdays this summer. But to have the breakfast, we need

volunteers. Don’t stop reading because you read the ‘V’ word. Can you spare an hour on the morning of

breakfast? If you can smile and greet, fill salt and pepper shakers or scramble eggs, we can use you!

It is such a win-win-win: Win because you get a good, inexpensive breakfast, win because you have

an opportunity to see and socialize with the people you share this lake with and a win because we are rais-

ing money for YOUR lake.

An award for a career of outstanding volunteer service to ELLOA, above and well beyond the normal

expectations of any lot owner, was established by the Board in 2016, approved at the Annual Meet-

ing, and incorporated into the Bylaws. James Wurster was named as the first recipient of the Cap-

tain’s Award in 2016 for his outstanding volunteer service to the community over the past decade.

The 2017 Captain’s Award recipient will be announced at our upcoming Annual Meeting.

1. This award is established to recognize persons who exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and altru-

ism in support of our community and, in so doing, to acknowledge the critical contributions such per-

sons make in contributing to and preserving the well-being of the ELLOA community.

2. The Captain’s Award carries a cash award of $250 and a suitable plaque will be presented to the

honoree as a token of this award. In addition, the honoree’s name will be added to a Captain’s Award

plaque to be established and added within the Club House interior to honor persons who have con-

tributed time and effort to the community in a significant and substantial way.

3. The ELLOA Board will determine winners of this award whenever such a person is deemed worthy

of recognition by the Board for outstanding service. Suggestions or informal nominations may come

from any board member or lot owner. There is no requirement or expectation that this award will be

given on any scheduled or regular interval (annually, for example). It is hoped, however, that deserv-

ing members of the community will be recognized by the Board whenever their service is warranted.

4. Recipients of the award will be recognized at the ELLOA Annual Meeting.

Weed and Algae Control Dates

Weed control dates were not available at the publication time of the newsletter. All dates

will be posted to the bulletin boards at both entrances, website and clubhouse when they

become available

All weed and algae treatments will be scheduled on a Wednesday so it should not effect

boating or fishing during the peak times that members, and their guests, are on the lake.

The ELLOA board has decided to keep the lake open to all members and guests during the

treatments EXCEPT for when the lake gets sprayed for weeds. We want to ensure that

the chemicals have time to settle and be most effective for controlling the weeds. Aquatic

Control told us that there is no warning on the labels of the chemicals they use about ac-

tivity on the water. We do ask everyone to be safe and courteous when Aquatic Control is

spraying and try to stay out of their way to ensure our lake gets treated correctly. For ad-

ditional information or questions, please contact Aaron Vick (317) 410-6953

Fishing Tournament and Fish Fry

This year the Environmental Committee will be holding our second annual fishing tourna-

ment for kids and adults, on June 16-17th. There will be winners in each category of bass

and bluegill. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the to fish fry. We are going to

keep some of the bluegill to clean and fry at the clubhouse! It will be a great way to get to

know your neighbors on the lake! So if you would like to help with the tournament, or the

fish fry, contact Aaron Vick 317-410-6953 or Evert Yager 317-518-1941. Your help would

be greatly appreciated!

Largemouth Bass Slot and Bag Limits

We would also like to remind our members and their guests that we

have a slot and bag limit for bass so we can ensure and enhance the

quality of fish in the lake.

All bass 12 to 16 inches must be returned to the lake.

The bag limit is 5 per day under 12 inches and 1 per day over 16

inches.
