MISSION STATEMENT

potential and developing in each a curiosity and love of learning.”

Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community Members,

I cannot believe it is May, already. Where has the time gone? We are quickly getting our transition meetings done for our grade eights, prepping their future high school teachers on the quality of students they will be receiving from JR Reid School.

Our students were extremely busy in April with Easter activities, Power of Pink week, Spring Bus Evacuation drills, fire drills, severe weather threat drills, shelter in place, Spring and grad pictures, Conservatory Chorale assembly, hot dog day, culture club, games’ club, badminton, open gym, cross country running, enrichment clusters, field trips (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra), Sky Zone, Beauty & the Beast, etc.

Congratulations to Marlee Sobchuk for winning the Environmental Awareness award and being recognized in the Brandon Sun! Big thanks to the kids for their efforts on our magazine campaign, great job to our YR team and their work within the community, thanks to our Parent Council for all that they do. Stop by our Library to see the latest contribution! Be sure to check out or rent a table the garage sale on June 3rd at JR Reid School. Just think, in less than eight weeks, summer holidays will be here!

The Grade Eight Farewell will be held on the last day of school:

This year our ceremony will be a little different than previous years as we have

43 students leaving J.R. Reid for High School! Congratulations!

We require contact information for anyone that you give

permission to pick up your child. Until we get to know them

they are to sign in to the building and show I.D. at the office.

The Warm Weather is Here…….

Please remember that the Brandon School Division Policy states that students are expected to wear

APPROPRIATE clothing that is acceptable to the established norms of the school community, staff and school administra-

tion.

Clothing should be free from:

Inappropriate words, phrases and images

Being sexually explicit or revealing in nature (NO UNDERGARMENTS SHOWING)

Inappropriate accessories that may cause potential harm to self and others

No headgear such as bandanas, hats, toques and hoods

As well, if students must bring their bikes to school, please make sure they have them

LOCKED UP, as there have been reports of bikes being stolen from

various schools (as well as our own). We can aid the police in any potential

recovery by reviewing our surveillance cameras.

Please remember that skateboards and scooters are NOT allowed at the school.

Rollerblades should be left at home as well. The school cannot take any responsibility for these (or

any other valuable item), if brought to school. This includes Ipods, MP3’s, cell phone’s, etc.

A group of YR students have been working closely with a group of YR students at Vincent Massey to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Together, students created artwork to highlight citizenship under four themes; reconciliation, diversity and inclusion, the environment, and youth. Their artwork is now at Vincent Massey with the Media Arts department who is putting it all together to create a mosaic. The final creation will be unveiled May 30th and will be on display at the front of the school until the end of the year.

Thank you to our JR Reid Community for

supporting our QSP Magazine campaign

this year! We sold over $9,000 in subscriptions and gift items,

which will net JR Reid approximately $2,700. Two years ago,

our profits helped us purchase a Projector for the gymnasium.

Brooklyn W, Jack B, Julianna V, Jayce W, and Jordyn R. Each

of these people will receive a DQ Treat!

MANITOBA SUMMER FAIR

Wednesday June 7—Sunday June 11

This year, J. R. Reid School decided to hold a community walk to raise awareness for the Red Cross Pink Shirt Day and anti-bullying. Families were invited to walk around the neighborhood with all the students in our pink shirts and ended in the playground for a school picture. Throughout the week, teachers also taught lessons on anti-bullying which included videos, art work, discussions and hands-on activities. Way to team up and stand up to bullying J.R. Reid!

BULLYING

Parent’s Rights & Responsibilities

Parents, as their child’s first teachers, establish the foundation for lifelong learning.

Parents have the right to be involved in their child’s education and are encouraged to

be involved as long as they respect the rights of others.

Parents’ Rights:

1 Classroom observing: by prearranging times with the school.

2 Teacher conferencing: these are scheduled throughout the year but can also

be requested.

3 Volunteering for the improvement of school facilities and programs.

4 Timely notification of student absenteeism without permission.

5 Being notified of student testing and academic progress.

6 School selection granting of requests is up to each school.

7 Safe school environment.

8 Examining curriculum materials of classes and information regarding standards expected.

9 Access to their child’s records and the ability to address inaccuracies or privacy concerns.

10 Written notification of school rules, policies and dress codes.

11 Information regarding psychological testing recommended for their child.

12 To participate in councils or committees in accordance with established rules and regulations.

13 To discuss any concerns with staff and have them

15 To access information regarding budget, expenditures, or any other financial matter pertaining to an

individual school, or to the Division as a whole.

Parental cooperation with and participation within the school and community enhances everyone’s involvement. How well

a child does in school is greatly affected by the support the student receives at home and from the community, as well as

the example set by the parents.

Parents’ Responsibilities:

1 Provide a positive learning environment at home and encourage their child to do their homework and studies

promptly and efficiently.

2 Ensure that their student is attending school on time and is well prepared, rested, fed and properly dressed for

the activities of the day.

3 Encourage the child’s successes and involvement at school and supervise and guide appropriate behaviour at

home, en route to school and in school.

4 Attend parent teacher conferences, as well as open school meetings, and maintain close contact with the

MULTILEVEL CLASSROOMS—FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Something you are all familiar with is multilevel classrooms (ie. combined classes).

What is a multilevel class?

A multilevel class contains students from two or more levels (ie. 4’s + 5’s)

Why is my child in a multilevel class?

There are many reasons for creating multilevel classes including enrollment irregularities and philosophical beliefs.

How can a teacher instruct two levels at once?

The teacher will spend time working with groups of students in various areas of the curricula, regardless of age or level. At times,

groups will include students from two levels. The teacher will focus on identifying skills required and teaching those to meet

appropriate curriculum.

Will my child have equal attention from the teacher?

Absolutely, just as he/she would in a single level classroom. The teacher is continually working to identify the academic strengths and

weaknesses of the student, grouping and regrouping him/her with other students to teach to their specific level, in various subject

areas.

Why is my son/daughter in the 1-2 classroom not the 2-3 classroom?

Placements are made based on the individual needs of the students, as well as the overall group dynamics necessary for a positive

learning environment. Age, interest, ability, social skills, independence, self-concept, and learning style are factors which contribute to

the decision.

Will the older students be placed in a 4-5 classroom or a 5-6 classroom?

If placed in a 4-5 classroom, it is an opportunity for the older students to develop leadership, self confidence, and social skills while

learning to make decisions and work independently.

Are the older students responsible to help teach the younger children?

The class members will not be concerned with who is older and who is younger, but give and take advice as needed. Co-operation

and sharing are a large part of working together.

Doesn’t that heighten competition?

Actually, it works to the contrary. When children work with others of different ages, there are more opportunities for co-operative

learning in which acceptance of individual differences is the norm. They develop a natural caring about helping their fellow

learners. Students are fully aware that they are learning different things at different levels, and therefore, are less likely to compare

themselves to others.

What are the 3’s doing while the teacher is working the 2’s?

While the teacher is working with any group of students, the others may be involved in independent activities such as reading, writing,

art, drama, etc.

Will the room be divided? Where do they sit?

The classroom will be arranged with areas for students to work in groups according to the particular teaching and learning needs as

they arise. It is essentially the same as a single level classroom.

How are the students being evaluated? Is the assessment different?

Just as information about each student’s learning is gathered and reported in single level classrooms, it will be in multilevel classes

as well. General outcomes for each subject area will be regarded.

Are the 5’s, for example, in the 4-5 class covering the same material as the students in the 5-6 class?

As in all classrooms, curriculum from Manitoba Education and Training will be used as a guide for the teaching of concepts and skills.

How can I learn more about multilevel classrooms?

Just ask your child’s teacher or principal. They will be happy to share the details of your child’s multilevel class with you.

Grade 7 Home Economic Class and Grade 8 Industrial Arts Classes are every Day 2 in the afternoon.
