But practice makes perfect and I plan on using what I learned from my experience in San Vicente to fuel my future Motheread/Fatheread classes. I look forward to the summer time wherein I can teach a Chamorro lan-guage class integrating our Motheread/Fatheread lessons. This whole experience is exciting and worthwhile. “For my first session I was, of course, nervous, but it gave me a chance to open up — being the quiet and shy person I am. It was quite a wonderful experience! Not only did the parents have the chance to learn different ways to get their children to read more, but they got to share ways to make it both meaningful and fun through litereacy. Thank you Moth-eread/Fatheread I look forward to more fun and experiences with future classes.”

Taotao tano’-ta: People of the Island encompass a collection of local leaders, individuals, and groups from the CNMI

whose vision, wisdom and skill have made an enormous impact in the lives of the people of the Commonwealth in many

ways. These are progressive local leaders that showcased exemplary leadership roles in public service, community build-

ing, and undertakings that benefited the CNMI as a whole. Taotao tano’-ta are Individuals & Artisans that promoted and

represented the CNMI local culture and traditions through the arts of healing, music, crafts, dances, culinary, and language

enhancement in the Commonwealth and beyond thePacific. These are also groups and innovative individuals that contribut-

ed generously in the development of agriculture, fishing, education, health, law, religion, public safety, and good govern-

ance in the Northern Marianas Island. Their untiring efforts to lift the Commonwealth to prosperity leaves no question of

their true leanings; that is for the betterment of the CNMI.

Charlene Taitano Cruz was born on Guam on May 18, 1972, and she resides on the beautiful island of Luta. She is married to Danny Kent King and has 2 children: Dannitia Teri and Danny King, Jr. She has been a certified Motheread/Fatheread Story Sharing/Story Exploring Instructor for more than 10 years. Charlene currently works for the CNMI Public School System for the Sinapalo Elementary School on Rota. She holds a Masters

in Education in Curriculum and Instruction. When asked why do you love volunteering for the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Family Literacy Program, Charlene shared, “I love literacy and working with children. I love learning from and with children!”

As a certified Storysharing /Story Exploring Instructor, Charlene Cruz actively utilizes the Story Exploring curriculum, designed for use with children from birth through age 11, which uses more than 100 multicultural children’s books to build reading and criti-cal thinking skills. This curriculum uses targeted reading, writing, listening, and speak-ing activities to foster problem solving, increase comprehension, and nurture a love of books.

Story Exploring provides teachers, parents and caregivers with strategies to increase children’s reading comprehen-sion, vocabulary and translation of spoken language to the written word. The curriculum is comprised of handbooks

for four separate reading levels: infants and toddlers, older preschoolers, children in grades K-2, and students in grades 3-5. The lessons help adults ask open-ended questions and invite children to respond. Children learn vocabulary and how to interpret stories. The curriculum uses props, games, songs, and other activities to make reading fun. Accompanying each Story Exploring lesson is a take-home Story Extender that caregivers can provide to parents. We thank you, and we appreciate all the hard work and commitment you do for the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Family Literacy Pro-gram! We are truly blessed to have you on our team! God bless you!

“The Motheread/Fatheread Program has been a helpful additional training. Through these weekly practices, I have learned new ways on how to connect with my student to the book. I have learned that even in the smallest ways, we can both relate to a story and understand it on a greater level.”— Jasmine Gortayo, Americorps Motheread/Fatheread

“The Motheread/Fatheread Program taught me that reading to children is much more than simply reading words out loud. Story telling can be much more than than, it is expanding their imagination and their love for reading. This program helped me be that sort of educator to my students.” —Edna Nisola, Americorps Motheread/Fatheread

“The Motheread/Fatheread Family Literacy Program has taught me to connect with my students through storytelling. It is not simply something you do to wear them out and prepare them for bedtime, it is your eagerness to join in the stream that channels endless imagination. That in turn encourages them, to dream more and a child who dreams is a child who will never allow the smallest (or biggest) setbacks in life to drag them down.”

— Rita Lifoifoi, Americorps Motheread/Fatheread “This Motheread/Fatheread Program has opened a new door for me and my students in that communication is much clearer and (it) has given my students a newfound love for reading they never believed they possessed.” — Diana Lopera, Americorps Motheread/Fatheread
