When was the last time you tried to walk with a small child? A child of 5 or maybe 6; just the two of you. The sun was playing peek-a- boo through the clouds, and the breeze was just enough to keep you cool as you explored together. You watched the birds eating in the grass; saw butterflies around a flower bush. You took great joy in blowing dandelion seeds with as you walked along the trail. It was just a simple, ordinary day but was it really ordinary? As you walked along, you talked and laughed, and maybe even sang, but if you think hard and remember, one thing this small child did which made this day so special was how he/she skipped along. People don’t skip much anymore especially adult people, grown people, mature people just don’t skip. We have too many worries and too much on our minds to do something as silly as skipping. We’re all too self-conscious and way to careful and far too serious to skip. As a matter of fact, by the time you read this you too may have actually forgotten how to skip. That happens when you get older and mature. My prayer is that it doesn’t happen to you my child. Right now child you are full speed ahead and wide open. The happiness which is in your heart can’t be contained there, and so you aren’t satisfied doing something as sensible as just walking. Where’s the fun in that? No, you skip through these days and it’s a thrill to watch. As I watch you skipping along, I want to remind you to never stop skipping. You see child, one day you may find yourself worrying about all kinds of things; about whether you’re pretty enough or thin enough or smart enough or successful enough. You may doubt who you are and look to other people to tell you. You may find your worth in how much you weigh or how much money you make or the friends you have or don’t have, or in a person who does or doesn’t like you the way that you like them. You may fear the future and regret things you’ve done and grieve people you’ve lost. You may have scars from the past that will scare you into stillness, when you really need to run. You may let all your grown-up cares and heavy worries gradually weigh you down and slow your stride, until all you can do manage to do, is to just walk. And that my child, would be a shame because you were created to skip. You were made to bound wildly through the trails and paths of this life, savoring the seconds and laughing loudly, with the wind in your hair and your eyes full of sunlight. You were created to live that way. Love who you are, always: Don’t ever let another person define you. Don’t ever let the mean angry people in the world change you or harden you. Don’t ever feel like you are less than or no good or not good enough. Don’t ever forget how beautiful and amazing and perfect you are. Don’t ever stop seeing the wonders in all of your ordinary days. Don’t ever lose the hope in your heart that makes you want to fly. Don’t ever be content just to walk through your life. My sweet child of God, don’t you ever stop skipping, because that’s what were you created to do. You were created to enjoy God’s creation so enjoy His creation and please don’t ever stop skipping. We are still investigating installing new carpeting in the Nursery and Children’s Sunday School rooms. We continue to look at options such as carpet squares, role carpeting, etc… We would really like to improve the playground this year and need teams to build playground items. If any group in the Church would like to take on a playground project, please contact any Trustee. We have a list of ideas (with pictures) that we can share. We have obtained estimates for renovating the FLC Tower are in the process of refining those estimates and deciding whether to repair or replace the tower and also the timing of when this could be done given the resources available.
Please help us manage utilities at LUMC like you would manage them at home – turn off lights, reset thermostats if they are changed, and report water leaks.
Please report all maintenance issues to your friendly Trustee!!! (THANKS ALOT)

Can you believe that we are approaching our FOURTH Annual BBQ Dinner? Well, it is occurring in about 2 weeks – May 16th, 5pm – 7pm. Tickets are available from many of the men of LUMC, as well as, from the office and also at the door. Whole Smoked Boston Butt Roasts are also available. Please reserve your Whole Smoked Boston Butt Roast by calling/seeing Glenn Downey (864-472-9228) or John Kylin (864-350-6590) by Friday, May 8th. We will be having a Corn-Hole tournament starting at 6PM at the FOURTH ANNUAL HOLY SMOKE BBQ DINNER. There will be three flights (Children, Youth, and Adults) with prizes to each the winner of each flight. Come on out and show your skills!!! The Men’s Ministry continues to formulate ideas for ‘NEW BEGINNINGS” in our Ministry. We are
seriously considering the expansion of our “Helping Hand’s” ministry to include the guests of our Community Meals and Mobile Meals recipients. We are also investigating continuing the Pumpkin Patch tradition for 2015. We will not have a Men’s Breakfast in May due to all the activities already planned for this month. Stay tuned for information about the next Men’s Ministry activity.

IF GOD IS YOUR CO-PILOT, SWITCH SEATS!!!

You must have seen the bumper stickers stating GOD IS MY CO-PILOT. Many times I have driven back from a long trip and not remembered some of the road. I have asked myself – Who was driving?
I received a phone call from a college roommate and my Maid of Honor in my wedding. We have exchanged the yearly Christmas card and kept in touch somewhat, but lately we have strayed from our communication. She called asking if we could get together and reminisce about our college days. “Oh, you might have to give me a couple months advance notice and let me lose some of this weight ..’’ I joked. She laughed and answered that she did not think she could do that because she had terminal cancer. I was shocked as she explained the situation. Her husband had died a few years earlier and so she must now take care of the arrangements for their children and the estate. How can this happen? What do you say? What can you say?
She remained positive throughout our conversation. When I asked how she coped with all of her problems she answered that she has allowed God to take over. And with that statement the bumper sticker I had seen came to mind. How does one argue with God? When plans that we have made are destroyed - who else do we blame? She has given the controls over to God and He is in complete control. His direction is leading her. She quoted a passage from JOB- “Agree with God, and be at peace, thereby good will come to you.”
If we are willing to let God take over, how different our living would be! If our belief, faith and trust in the Lord is so strong as to let him always be in control, how much smoother our travel would become. If God is your co-pilot, why not permit him to drive!

These people are vital to the worship experience and we will be counting on you to be at the ready, on time, smiling, and energetic. Your presence, in place, on time, smiling can and does contribute to the presence of or not of the Holy Spirit. As we read in 1 Thessalonians 5:19 “Do not quench the Spirit.” Our attitude, your attitude either fuels or quenches the Spirit’s presence. Let’s work together to fuel the Holy Spirit within our midst and beyond. — Pastor Kevin

Women’s Bible Study
organizing the material and your thoughts and then writing the information as simply and as interestingly as possible. But music isn’t about thinking and analyzing and organizing. For me, it is about feelings and communicating. It is a talent that I have always felt was a gift from God. Writing about my feelings for music… and a gift from God is a very scary and personal task. But here goes: I started singing in front of audiences at the age of 4. Through grade school, high school and college my identity was tied to my ability to make music. I sang with high school, church and All State choirs. I auditioned for a New York theater production company that was doing “The Sound of Music”. At the audition, I was the only vocalist that was allowed to finish 2 songs. By the end of my audition, you could have heard a pin drop in a gym that moments before had been filled with the noise of laughter, tap dancers and other vocalists warming up. Did I get the role of Reverend Mother? Nope. But that didn’t matter. I had made music and entertained the professional entertainers. For those two songs, I had done my best and others judged it as good enough. I have always thought that God quieted that gym that day so that I could give and receive a blessing. Many years passed without singing being a part of my life. As with other unused gifts, my voice became weak from age and disuse. With the loss of my husband, it was time to reclaim the things that were important to me as an individual and to live the winter of my life my way. I found my way to Landrum United Methodist Church and met a kind and caring woman who insisted that I join her in the choir. What a blessing! As an alto and a sometimes tenor, my music puts joy in my heart. I hate to miss Wednesday night choir practice. There is more there than beautiful music and singing beautiful songs. The atmosphere of fun and Christian caring is addictive.
What does music mean to me… using my gift to touch the hearts of listeners and to share “making a joyful noise” with fellow choir members. Oh yes… my voice is coming back!
When asked to write about what music means to me, I thought, “No problem.” I’ve written training material, methods and procedures for major corporations, newspaper and magazine articles for various publications. A short piece about what music means to me should be simple. “Not so much” as I found out when I tried to write about something that I love so much and that is so important to me. Writing factual material is about gathering the facts,

The Choir is a family within the Church Family praising God in all his glory. I hold in high regard the Choir Directors and Choirs I have had the privilege to be a part of...all unique in their own way providing the utmost music for the pastor and congregation.
I especially want to thank my husband, Bill, for allowing me to sing in the Choir for most of our married life and all other spouses supporting the choir members.

Edith Biswas, 81, of Tryon passed away on April 13, 2015.
She was a native of India and was a Registered Nurse having retired from the Veterans Administration. She was the manager of the Tryon Plaza Motel. Graveside services will be held at 3pm Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Kevin Dalton. Receiving friends followed the service at the Landrum United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
In loving memory of Edith Biswas – After higher education in her country and becoming a nurse, Edith came to America. She nurtured people all of her life through nursing and taking care of her husband during his illness until death. She continued
their dream to help those in need after her husband passed away. She helped at the church with meals, munch and mingle, along with the community meals. Her love for the Lord carried through her entire life and never did she express annoyance for doing so. She attended bible study on Wednesday evenings and was very helpful in reciting passages from the bible for topics we may be studying that evening and often asked that we pray for those in need at her Motel. The Tryon Motel was more than lodging; it was a place for helping individuals to get a fresh start or a stopping point until they were ready to move on. Edith fed those not able to afford food, took people to their doctor appointments and even shopping. Was she able to help all? No, but her persistence to help was unfailing and unselfish. Her Motel was not making her rich in money but richer than you and I have experienced in God’s eyes. Edith was one of the richest people I know. She had more than most of us could ever hope to have. She enjoyed helping people, it was obedience to God. Her daily witnessing to people was second nature to her. Edith, I won’t forget the impact you have given to mankind and to me. You will be missed. I know you have earned your place in heaven because you have certainly pleased God. Love you Ms. Edith! Suzan Hahne
