As I write this letter, I am thinking of the final preparations for the Norfolk, Virginia Trip. It is always great spending time with this wonderful group of students and getting to know the chaperones better. I would like to thank Maria Matchett for coordinating the preparations for the trip. Thanks also to all of the Chaperones who went along to keep things together. Finally, thanks to all of the students for being well behaved and making it an easy and enjoyable experience for all. We had elections at the April meeting for the Executive Board officers who will serve during the 2014-2015 band season. Thank you to those that were elected to guide us through another year. At the May meeting, we will continue discussing some fundraising options for 2014 – 2015 season, and we need your input to help in making our decision, so please plan to attend as this will be our last Booster meeting of this school year. I also want to thank all those who have stepped up to chair one of our committees for next season, we still have a couple openings in; Ways & Means (fundraising) and 50/50 sales. With the 50/50 sales we have a volunteer who has volunteered to help us with completing the required paperwork so that we can be prepared for the season, but would like to have someone in the position prior to the beginning of the school year so that we can get an early start on sales for the year. We also need to fill a few spots for next year with a shadows to take our Boosters and lead them into the future. The positions are: Concessions and Uniforms. We can also look to take a different approach and spread the responsibility for fund raising coordination among more people next year, so please contact me if you are willing to take on a portion of any of these important jobs. I encourage you all to get involved. Working together, we can continue to provide wonderful experiences for our students into the future. A Note From the Directors

Page 2

Note:

This newsletter serves as

the main form of commu-

nication for the Band

Boosters organization as

well as all band

activities.

You are welcome to

submit articles by the

15th of the month before

you want the information

to be printed. This

newsletter is published

at the beginning of

every month except

January and July. Send

your articles via e-mail

to:

[email protected].

Please use “band

newsletter” as your

subject line.

What an amazing month it has

been. I am sure that some of you are not even aware of how many

enrichment activities have taken place with our band students over the past month. Let us reflect for

just a moment. On Saturday March 22, Seneca

Valley hosted a “Trombone Day” in the SHS Auditorium (Natalie Byers

Senior Project). Approximately 55 trombonists ages 9 to 75 and from all over the state participated in the

event. Clinicians included Mark Lusk (Penn State University),

Reggie Watkins (Jason Mraz Band), Kevin McManus (Seton Hill Universi-ty), and Bruce Lazier (Freelance

Performer).

Also on March 22 was the annual Big Band Dance which was once again a fun and successful evening

featuring the Jim Cunningham Orchestra, S.V. Jazz II and SV Jazz I.

March 26-29 was the PMEA All-

State Conference in Hershey, PA. 12 SV Band students participated in the All-State Wind Ensemble,

Concert Band, and Jazz Ensemble. All 12 students performed fantastic

concerts with their respective All-State groups. On Thursday March 27, the SV Jazz Ensemble I gave a

FANTASTIC performance at the PMEA All-State Conference. Playing to a capacity filled room and with

people crowded along the back wall and into the hallways… the band

brought the house down. It was a true highlight! To check out the SV Jazz I closing number at the PMEA

concert, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=Qxa58XAd3FU

April 3rd brought the amazing Dallas

Brass to Seneca Valley for clinics, a concert, and a fantastic joint

performance with our own 8th grade band.

Saturday April 5th was the Slippery

Rock University Jazz Festival featuring 6 High School Jazz Ensembles (including our own SV

Jazz Ensemble I) and legendary trombonist Michael Davis. The SV

Jazz I received all “Superior Rat-ings” and four outstanding soloist awards: Dan Eppler, Dan Singer,

Seth Beck, and Kyle Morgan.

On Friday April 11th, Dr. William Stowman from Messiah College worked with several of the ensem-

bles, students, and music theory class throughout the school day.

Dr. Stowman is the director of the department of music at Messiah.

On Saturday April 12th, Seneca Valley hosted a “Trumpet Day” in the SHS Auditorium (Matt Ruwe’s

Senior Project). Over 30 students participated in the event. Clinicians

included Chad Winkler (Pittsburgh Symphony), Dr. James Moore (West Virginia Wesleyan), Dr. Stephan

Hawk (Slippery Rock University), Dr. William Stowman (Messiah College),

Mr. Joe Herndon (freelancer), and Mr. Dave Wingenbach (freelancer).

So as you can see, this past month has been a very busy and enriching time for the students of the S.V.

Band Program. We look forward to a wonderful and fulfilling end of our

school year! Musically,

Mr. Matchett, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Babick, and Mrs. Snyder

May 2014 Page 3

All students participating in Marching

Band or the Auxiliary Units must turn in the health form on the first day of band camp. These forms are included

in this newsletter or you can find them on the band web site www.svband.net

under the Booster Page Link. Health forms from the previous band trip or last year’s band season cannot be

used for this school year.

The student cannot participate in any band function without a health form on

file. Please complete both sides of the form. Both parents and students need to sign the form.

It is not necessary to have a physician’s order to dispense over-the-counter medications for band

activities, however we do need the parents or guardian’s permission to dispense any prescription or over-the-

counter medications to your child, so please sign the form in the spaces provided and check the medications

your child is permitted to take. Please consider giving permission, even if

your child does not normally take any over-the-counter medications. Often, students request medications for

headaches, upset stomachs, colds and pulled muscles. We cannot dispense any medications (even Tylenol)

without having received a signed

medical form and the appropriate medica-

tions checked. If we do not receive this form, your child will not be able to participate in band activities.

Please have your child bring a filled water bottle to band camp, wear sunscreen

and wear shoes that will not cause blisters. When the directors decide to go outside, there is not enough time to fill

water bottles and apply sunscreen! Insect repellent should also be considered. These actions will help prevent most of the first

aide problems during band camp. Stinging insects can be a problem. If your child is allergic, send prescribed medications

every day. Also if your child uses an inhaler, please have them carry it with them, especially when the students go

outdoors to practice.

Remind your child to re-fill their water bottle after lunch and to reapply

sunscreen at that time.

If your child has any medical or psychologi-cal problems, please let us know so we can

be prepared to handle any situations which may occur.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact First Aid Chair:

Part Two! Pastries by Andrea www.PastriesAndMore.com

It’s time for the second part of our PASTRIES by ANDREA fundrais-er. YUMMY doesn’t begin to

describe the Baklava (sweet, flaky, Greek/Syrian pastry), Kolachi (large nut or apricot roll), and

Ladylocks (traditional puff pastry with sweet cream filling) that Andrea personally creates by hand

for us. Our spring sale will finish with delivery at the May 8, 2014

concert—JUST IN TIME FOR MOTHERS’ DAY! Profits from the spring sale go into the general

fund, which has helped to pay for the new uniforms and to decrease

the cost of the band trip. And don’t forget the benefit to tastebuds and tummies!

Students will receive an order form or

one can be printed from the website. Sellers need to take orders and then

input the TOTALS onto Andrea’s Website. There is no need to input a separate order for each customer,

only for each band/auxiliary member who is selling. You will receive a confirmation email when your order

has gone through. There will be an option to prepay, or you can pay at

pickup. Orders need to be in by Sunday, May 4, 2014.

All items freeze well, and the

ladylocks are especially tasty right out of the freezer. If you have questions,

please call Mrs. Erin Scott at 724-772-7499. Thanks, and GOOD LUCK SELLING!!
