Remembering our heroes

Ingleburn High School has a proud tradition of honouring those who have served our country and participating in local events to remember the sacrifice of those who have gone before us.

Laura Zucchetto (School Captain) and Kristofor Newington (School Prefect) attended the Dawn Service on Anzac Day at Ingleburn RSL and laid a wreath on the School’s behalf. Over 4000 community members attended the dawn service, a testament to the strength of our community in pulling together and showing respect and gratitude for our servicemen.

Similarly, on Friday 16 May, four of our student leaders, Jarred Murphy; Laura Zucchetto; Rachel Minton and Nabeela Styer attended the Ingleburn RSL ceremony to remember the battle of Coral-Balmoral.

Achieving Excellence

Our School Captain, Jarred Murphy, has been awarded the Nanga Mai Award for Indigenous Leadership. This is a state-wide award and Jarred is a very worthy recipient. Jarred has also recently been successful in winning an Indigenous Affairs Scholarship that will allow him to study in Canada for five months next year. We wish Jarred all the very best.

Broadening Technology

We have recently purchased and installed ten additional interactive projectors into the school. These projectors will allow teachers to present even more dynamic lessons that allow students to have access to internet resources. This is part of a program where we aim to have all classrooms have such technology within the next two years and is part of our 21

ANTI-RACISM – A MESSAGE FROM THE ARCO

Ingleburn High School has a strong commitment to Multicultural Education, equity and equality. These beliefs permeate all of our school policies including our Anti-Racism Policy, the Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy, Multicultural Education in schools, the Aboriginal Education and Training Policy and the Complaints Handling Policy, amongst others. This ethos is embedded in our teaching practice and not only is it taught explicitly to students, but it also forms part of our expectations of the safe, respectful learners that attend Ingleburn High School.

Any member of the school community has the right to lodge a complaint and seek a favourable resolution if they have been the victim of racial vilification in the school context. The resolution of such complaints can be either formal or informal depending on the severity and frequency of the abuse. It is my duty as an Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) of Ingleburn High School to handle such complaints and to provide mediation, education and monitoring that leads to reduced recidivism of racial abuse in our school.

If any student experiences such vilification, they are encouraged to speak to their teacher and to see myself in the History, Languages and Music Faculty in B17. If you have any questions regarding our policies or the resolution process, please contact me through the school’s front office.

Mr D. Levkovski ARCO Representative

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING NEWS

Welcome back to an eventful year of VET. I hope everyone is well rested and had a fabulous break over the Easter Holiday period. This year sees some very big opportunities for our students studying a VET course.

For those parents / guardians new to VET please read on. The NSW BOSTES has developed Industry Curriculum Frameworks (ICF) for delivery to students as part of the Higher School Certificate.

Each course is based on a national industry training package, which leads to recognition under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The courses are based on national competency standards which have been determined by industry. They are designed to ensure national consistency in the standard of skill and knowledge required to gain a qualification at a particular AQF level.

Students will receive credentials from the Board of Studies on behalf of the Registered Training Organisation (Ingleburn High School, RTO Ultimo 90072) which could include Statement of Attainment or Certificate I, II or III.

Many students of our school in Year 11 and Year 12 are currently completing competencies in any one or more of the following frameworks:

Business Services

Construction

Hospitality

Retail Services

Sport Coaching

Most Year 12 students by now would have completed their mandatory 70 hours of work placement. If they have not, it is very important that they come and see me to have the issue resolved. Year 11 have begun their first work placement this term. It is imperative that school, home and students work together to achieve the most positive outcome. This means that a quality work placement is selected through the Macarthur Work Placement Learning Program (MWLP), students, parents/ caregivers understand the responsibilities of work placement and that all parties are in communication before, during and after the placement.

I would also like to take this opportunity and congratulate the following students who through their outstanding commitment and initiative while on work placement and have been nominated and placed on the MWLP Honour Roll recognised by their host employer:

Well done and congratulations!

Please feel free to contact me for any further information.

Ms Koskinas Vocational Education and Training Coordinator

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Recently our school ventured to the Campbelltown Athletics Field for the annual Athletics Carnival. The weather was kind to us as we enjoyed a sunny Autumn day. The day began with the usual 400m race which truly tests the athletic abilities of all athletes. It was pleasing to see the number of students get involved and, whilst we cannot all be Olympic athletes, most were competing to the best of their ability and having fun. As a further incentive five students received $20.00 iTunes vouchers for great effort. A special shout out to Rhiannan McDonald who competed in just about every event.

The field events were a success with all events filled by competitors from every house, we certainly have some future champions in the areas of shot put and javelin. The glamour event, the 100m Sprint, saw many close races which made for great viewing for those in the grandstand. The day finished with the 4 x 100m Relay which is always the day’s highlight.

Cyclone took out Champion House with 980 points. 2nd place: Tornado 739 3rd place: Monsoon: 674 4th place: Hurricane: 658

Age champions were as follows:

Girls: 12 - Jaleesha Singh 13 - Brooke Wilkins 14 - Maya-Violet Andrew 15 - Abby Edwards 16 - Adriana Alaelua 17 - Emy Edwards

Boys: 12 - Jeremy Boualorn 13 - Braith Wallace 14 - Grant Kembrey 15 - James Tautaiolefua 16 - Brendan McGuire 17 - Eman Donaire

A special mention to the Champ of Champs, Grant Kembrey, who tallied the most points across the school with 90 points coming from first place in nine events. Well done.

On a final note, well done to all the students who attended and who were well behaved. Any students who did not attend, may I encourage you to attend all school events with pride.

Thank you to Mrs Underhill and Ms Rogan on a well organised carnival and a further thank you to Mrs Roberts, our P&C President, for her efforts in catering on the day which was very much appreciated by staff.

CAREERS UPDATE

“The UWS excursion was an enjoyable and worthwhile excursion. We had the opportunity to experience what life was like as a uni student. We got shown the endless possibilities in terms of career paths and we all left with thoughts of our futures on our mind. We got to visit the University of Western Sydney at Campbelltown campus and we saw how relaxed it was and we felt a great atmosphere surrounding the place. Overall, the excursion was very interesting and should be recommended to every student with hopes and dreams of going to university.” Shivneet Kumar

“It was a wonderful day at the UWS Campus. It was a good way to explore how university life is. They showed us around the campus, we participated in activities that can help us to make educational decisions and had staff and faculty talks. I am very excited to go to uni after school.” Navneet Kaur

“On 1st May, about 47 Year 10 students, including myself, were lucky enough to participate in a program called Steps@UWS. We attended the University of Western Sydney campus in Campbelltown to experience what it was like to be a uni student. We were split up into three teams which were led by a Unim8, a student attending that campus. We came up with team names (eg. Blue Babes of Erudite!) and participated in activities designed to help us decide what we might like to study in the future, and also heard inspirational stories from people who seemingly had no chance of getting an education, going through uni and fulfilling their dreams. Overall it was a great experience and really made me feel more confident about going to university in the future.” Nicole Kershaw

The UWS excursion was definitely a great introduction to university life. Throughout the day many of the students including myself had fun completing the activities the leaders had set out for us although they were challenging, they were good fun. The Unimates (Unim8s) helped us and shared their experiences they’ve had through UWS. I know I learnt a lot about how university life would be and I’m definitely excited to go there upon leaving school and have my own unique experiences.” Phoebe Prior

“The University of Western Sydney has excelled my greatest expectations, not only has it opened my interest for university but their encouraging and enthusiastic staff and faculty have done justice in providing their students with the best opportunities for future careers. On the day many of Ingleburn High School’s students, including myself, got to experience the life of university, we had talks from the staff, students, played games and got the chance to explore the campus. This experience has not only provided me with a better idea of uni but also allowed students like me to see the different varieties of courses and extra curriculum activities provided at the campus. Overall I can say I really enjoyed my experience at UWS and am very thankful that I got the chance to experience this amazing opportunity.” Kristine Narayan

YEAR 7 AFRICAN DRUMMING PRESENTATION

On Thursday 20 March African Beats came to Ingleburn High School to give a presentation of African Music to our Year 7’s. This was not just a musical event but it was also a welfare initiative to encourage team building and harmony within the students’ year group. Students took part in small and large group activities and worked with the presenters as part of a cohesive and musically in tune team. Drumming and dancing ensued and all students who took part thoroughly enjoyed the event and even got a chance to join in.

SSW RUGBY “On Tuesday 20 May I went to Newcastle for Sydney South West Rugby Union Team. The tournament went for four days.

On the first day we played three games. We won all three games. I scored two tries in each game. Later that night we had a team dinner where we talked about our games and watched video footage to analyse our game.

The second day we played three games, where we won two but lost one. We still made it to the quarter finals to be played the next day.

The next day our quarter finals game was against Sydney West. We won 48-25 meaning we went through to semi-finals.

On the last day we played against City for third and fourth place. We won against them in a tight match 28-20, where I scored three tries. This was my favourite match because it was a tough match and we won.

I recommend the younger students to trial for Sydney South West as this was a good and fun experience.

Jacob Tupuola”
