PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents, This week, the Whanau Group leaders enjoyed a day at the National Young Leaders Conference. Amongst all of the jokes, games, music and multimedia presentation, the fantastic motivational speakers had an important message for the children. The theme for the day was 3D, Dream, Dare and Develop. It is an important message not just for our young leaders but for all students at Kaikorai Primary School. Dream what your life could be, then chase that dream, dare to do the scary brave things that make life an adventure, and develop your strengths. It was pleasing to see the Whanau Leaders make the connection between the message of the day and our school values of being Aspiring (dream), Keen (Dare) and Independent (Develop). Kind Regards Simon Clarke

    SCHOOL NEWSSYNDICATE NEWS

Middle News - Art has taken over the middle syndicate as well as the whole school. Last week the children learned about famous artists and their famous works from well-known Pablo Picasso to Robert Delaunay s Disks and Friedensreich Hundertwassers Village. We topped it off with a walk to see what other classes around the school had done and we were very impressed.

Development of a new and improved National Memorial Park is underway in Wellington and will be opened on ANZAC day 2015. We are just beginning our learning about systems and our first port of call was a virtual fieldtrip to learn about the process of constructing a massive tunnel to remove traffic from the Memorial Park area. We will also be taking a special look at the roading systems in our own community as a part of our inquiry, and will have a walking field trip later in the term.

Junior NewsWhat a great start to the term we have had immersing ourselves in the wonderful world of traditional tales and fairy stories. We have been reading different stories every day, basing our art week around them and writing and retelling our favourite stories. Thank you to the parents who came to view their childrens art on Friday. I am sure you will agree that all that hard work over art week heralded some amazing pieces of art. Fun Friday starts this Friday please come along and help 1.30 to 2.45 for the next 5 Fridays. PMP is also well under way and we really need more helpers for each class. Some classes have no helpers at all.Our next big focus starts next week when the Life Education Bus and Harold the Giraffe come, to teach us about body systems. We love our new sandpit and the fine weather has allowed us a chance to enjoy it. Long may this last.

Senior NewsWe are all about systems in Term 2. This has been a very busy week for the senior classes, with all visiting Toitu to learn more about systems of transport. Sara Sinclair, the education officer at Toitu, has worked closely with our teachers to prepare an interesting programme looking at the museums artifacts relating to travel and communication by both Maori and European settlers. It was particularly exciting to experience the European settlers voyages to New Zealand, and also to find out how peoples needs have changed over time. We found out how the simple forms of early travel of walking, paddling and sails quickly became riding various modes of transport, harnessing steam energy, and later still electric energy, other fuels and flight. One class has focused more on systems of communication and Sara had plenty for them to see and try out as well. We look forward to developing some of these ideas in our classes with timelines, models and descriptions of these systems.

Last week was a fabulous Art Week where we suspended most of our usual programmes and developed art works instead. The children enjoyed the opportunities to work over an extended time and with different teachers, to create images and models all based on a theme of Plants in Nature. The media and inspiration used included stained glass windows, 3D modeling, scraffito and tapa cloths. The art works are now displayed in classrooms and hallways. They look great!

Kids for Kids ConcertCongratulations to the 52 children who represented Kaikorai Primary Kids for Kids show Everything is Ka Pai, featuring Jackie Clarke.

Our Kaikorai Primary School choir has worked very hard this year, as we had to learn 18 songs in total in order to join with schools all over Otago in a massed choir performance night! This meant that our children had to give up a number of lunchtimes, especially in the two school weeks leading up to the concert.

This year we had the amazing experience of singing with Jackie Clarke and her very charismatic musical director.

The songs were a wonderful mix of old and new, with great Kiwi classics including Six Months In a Leaky Boat, Shes a Mod and Something in the Water.

A special well done must be given to Judah Nika for his wonderful ukulele playing, as well as Scarlett Stretch-Treweek, Maggie Hunt and Hannah Bell, for their enthusiastic dancing in the last item.

    Special Thanks!

Thank you to two of our sponsors and parents for their generosity. Dave Callon and his family have kindly donated a netball hoop for the netballers to practise on in the hall and Marty Anderson from KM Builders who has done an outstanding job rebuilding the sand pit.

A huge thank you also to Lisa Randel and Christine Mein. They have been working with a number of students providing free speech language therapy on a Wednesday afternoon. This generous offer of their time and expertise is greatly appreciated and it will have a huge benefit for some of our students!

ChatbusChatbus is available to children on a Wednesday morning with our trained and fully qualified counsellor Stephanie

An appointment system operates in the school via the school office, and children can freely self refer to ChatBus. Sometimes school staff or parents make referrals for children. Referrals can be made via the school office, or by email or phone to the ChatBus office.

All children need to bring back the permission form whether or not you give permission for your child to use this service.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE 16 MAYLast Fridays Sausage Sizzle was a great success and raised just over $700. It was lovely to see so many parents at school sharing lunch and enjoying all the wonderful art works created by the children during Art Week.

PHOTOGRAPHY FUNDRAISERJenny McCreanor of Eye Spy Photography is offering a great photography deal to Kaikorai Primary School families during June. The package costs $150 and includes a 30-minute studio session, five 5x7 prints and five high resolution printable files on a disk. And, for every booking, the school will receive $20. More details about this fundraiser and how to book a time will be distributed early next week.

SCHOOL FAIR - SATURDAY 20 SEPTEMBERWe need lots more helpers for the School Fair in September, so if youre able to help out with a stall, then please contact Tor. We also need businesses to donate goods for the raffle and tombola and to sponsor various stalls/expenses. If you own or run a business that might be interested in supporting the School Fair in some way, Tor would love to hear from you!

PARENTS GROUP MEETINGThere will be a Parents Group meeting on Tuesday May 27 at 2pm in the Staff Room. All are welcome to attend.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the Parents Group, then please contact Tor Devereux (453-1108, 027-635-1512, [email protected]).

Scholastic Book FairWe are holding a Scholastic Book Fair at our school in the week beginning Monday the 9th of June through to Friday the 13th of June. The books will be on show in the kitchen after school each day.

Books can be purchased and the school receives a percentage of the total cost. This money will be used to purchase books for the school library.

Winter Weather ConditionsThe weather forecast for the upcoming weekend is a good reminder of our procedure for snow days. Kaikorai Primary School will follow the decision made by the Otago Primary Principal Association and the Police to delay the opening or close the school. These announcements are usually made by 7am on local radio stations. You can also find this information by visiting the school web page, ring and check the school message or download the school smart phone app.

School is not open for children until 8.30 as teachers need the time to prepare for the day before welcoming your child. The Kelly Club is open from 7am for those families who have work commitments. It is not a great way to start a childs learning for the day if they are wet, cold and miserable.

    Is the message getting through?

Only 75% of our parents read the last email that was sent out. Newsletters are sent out every three weeks so keep an eye on your inbox to stay up to date.
