Steve Hegwood’s Thursday Night Bible Study Come and find out about their new study on May 10 at 7PM. This group meets every other Thursday and always has an interesting

topic of discussion. Why not check it out this month?

We all love the smell and taste of fresh, baked cookies. And this is what our visitors receive when they visit Covenant for the first time! We are in need of one or two individuals who enjoy baking and would like to be a part of our cookie ministry. If you would

like to help out, please see Yvonne Craycraft. Thank you!

HELP RAISE MONEY FOR OUR YOUTH – NEW KROGER REWARDS PROGRAM  Many thanks for all those who have participated in the Kroger script program over the past 8 or so years. The money generated from that program has helped pay for the transportation of many of the mission trips for our youth. Just last year the funds were used to rent a 12-passenger van and pay for the gas for the youth’s mission trip to Steubenville. But Kroger is changing their rewards program, and Covenant has enrolled in their new Community Reward program. The new program no longer uses the script cards but is tied to your Kroger Plus card. So it is very easy to register and raise money for our youth every time you shop at Kroger and use your plus card. To enroll, follow the instructions below: • Register online at krogercommunityrewards.com • Be sure to have your Kroger Plus card handy and register your card with your organization after you sign up. (If you do not have a Kroger Plus card, they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger.) • Click on Sign In/Register • Most participants are new online customers, so they must click on Sign Up Today in the New Customer? box • Sign up for a Kroger Rewards Account by entering zip code, clicking on favorite store, entering your email address and creating a password, agreeing to the terms and conditions. • You will then get a message to check your email inbox and click on the link within the body of the email. • Click on My Account and use your email address and password to proceed to the next step. • Click on Edit Kroger Community Rewards information and input your Kroger Plus card number. • Update or confirm your information. • Enter the NPO number (Covenant’s Number is 80010) or Covenant Presbyterian Church & click on confirm. To verify you are enrolled correctly, you will see your organization’s name on the right side of your info page.

Thanks for participating in this program – your help enables our youth to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world around us.

Special Dates May 3 National Day of Prayer May 6-13 Christian Family Week May 13 Mother’s Day May 17 Ascension of the Lord May 19 Armed Forces Day May 27 Pentecost May 28 Memorial Day

May 6 – “The Illuminated Becomes the Illuminator” (Acts 8:26-40) May 13 – “Love” (1 John 4:7-21) May 20 – “Why Wait?” (Luke 24:44-53) May 27 – “Seeking Unity” (Genesis 11:1-9 and Acts 2:1-12) This is Pentecost Sunday – join us as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

Page 11: May 2012 Courier

On May 27th we’ll gather for worship on Pentecost Sunday to celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the early church. We will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion during worship. Pentecost is always 50 days after Easter no matter when Easter is. So, Pentecost can be as early as May 10th (if Easter is March 22nd), or as late as June 13th (if Easter is April 25th). But here’s a question: did the Holy Spirit really come upon the disciples on Pentecost? According to Acts, that’s precisely what happened. The disciples had been instructed to wait in Jerusalem until they would receive power from on high. Pentecost was certainly an appropriate time for the Spirit to descend upon the early church because Jerusalem was filled with Jews who had come from many parts of the world to celebrate the Jewish festival of Pentecost (yes, Pentecost was originally a Jewish festival!). It gave Peter an opportunity to preach his famous Pentecost sermon that resulted in over 3000 people coming to faith in Jesus as the Messiah (or Christ). The early church was off and running. But then I read John’s gospel. On the Easter night John writes that Jesus was with his disciples (except Thomas and Judas) when he “breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven’” (John 20:22-23). So, according to John’s gospel account the Holy Spirit was given in some way to the disciples on Easter night. What are we to make of these differences? Is John right? Or is Acts? Maybe they both are!

In John we read of the mission of the church: reach out to others in the power of the Holy Spirit with the message of God’s forgiveness. In Acts we also read of the mission of the church: reaching out with the Good News in languages that people of all languages can understand. So, according to Acts, the gospel reverses the story of the Tower of Babel. You remember that story in Genesis 11: God dispersed the people and confused their languages so they couldn’t communicate.

We often think the Holy Spirit has been poured into our lives to enable us to become more and more Christ-like in all we do. That’s for sure! But let’s be reminded the Holy Spirit also calls us to be engaged in the mission of the church. Ken
