Transcript of May 2012 AEAWA Newsletter
Dear Members Hello to all of you, my fellow EA members! Let me begin by saying how privileged and
excited I am to be your President. A “record breaking” attendance of over 110 members was at our AGM on 1 April 2012. Our new Management Committee comprise 6 new volunteers, 5 from the previous committee and our Treasurer who has a further one year term. Additionally, we have a new Editor and our Webmaster will continue to support us. I am very pleased to find that each of them is so willing to give up their time for our Association which we all believe in and cherish so dearly. A short snippet of each of us and our new Portfolios can be viewed on the inside pages. As you can appreciate with such a big changeover in the Management Committee, we ask for your patience over the next couple of months as we settle in and pick up where the previous committee has left off. On this point, and on behalf of all our members, let me take this opportunity to extend my thanks and gratitude to the outgoing members of the Management Committee and Editor. A special mention to those who have devoted many long years of dedicated and loyal service to our Association. Please continue to support us! We will be looking at making small changes over the course of time which we hope will provide some positive benefit back to our members. We will also be including some new feature articles in our newsletter and promote increased use of social networks and our webpage for more interactive communication among members.

President’s Message
MAY 2012 VOL 28 ISSUE 2
aeawa.asn.au
Here are some key areas that we want to focus on : Community Services—this is a new
portfolio—we want to place a greater emphasis on our community and how we can help each other. If someone is ill, grieving, lonely or requires assistance—let us know so that we can assist in your time of need. We invite members to please support us in this cause.
Remember when we were young and dad &
mum took us to Eurasian parties? Well bring the family—mum, dad, grandparents and especially the children and invite your friends along to our once a month Sunday lunch! We will do what our Eurasian culture typifies—eat, enjoy music, dancing & singing, playing games and catching up with old friends and family. Let’s have FUN!
In 2 years’ time, we will celebrate our 25th Anniversary. We will be organising activities and celebrations during this time to culminate in our main event, our 25th Anniversary Ball in February 2014. Our work starts now!
Please support all activities. We hope to make it all worth your while!! This month we celebrate Mother’s Day. It will be a special tribute to all mothers at our 6th May Sunday lunch with music and dancing, some wonderful meals to savour and a small gift for mums to show our love and appreciation. So bring the family and join us in celebrating Mother’s Day! The Management Committee would like to wish all mothers a joyous and wonderful Mother’s Day and may God continue to bless you.

Meet the Management Committee 2012/2013
I am currently employed by
the State Government at the
Valuer General's Office as a
District Valuer. I was previ-
ously the Youth Coordinator
in the Management Commit-
tee and organised many
games, sports and entertain-
ment to bring the youth back
to the EA. As President I in-
tend to revive much of what I
started and I hope to welcome
back past and new members,
create a community spirit
within the EA and have fun at
our lunches and events.
Originally from Singapore
and a past President of EA, I
decided to support the man-
agement committee when
vacancies arose. I like to
keep ‘my finger on the pulse’
and I am a keen mentor to
all members of the manage-
ment committee.
Originally from Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia, I am a keen musician,
playing the guitar for a local band.
This is my first appointment to the
Management Committee and
would like to improve member
participation at the Sunday
lunches and events.
I am married with 3 children and
joined AEAWA when my family
and and I migrated to Perth in
2003. For work, I have been a
lawyer in private practice for more
than 20 years. From my university
days, I have been involved in
church, human rights and legal aid
groups and was previously on the
board of CASE for Refugees, a pro-bono legal organi-
sation for WA assisting refugees. For many years I
have been attending AEAWA functions and felt it was
time for me to put my hand up and contribute to the
organisation. I feel that AEAWA must continue to
build a strong sense of community and hope to ex-
pand the range of community services available to
meet the needs of members.
Carol has been the association’s Treasurer for the
past year and is currently away on a well earned
pilgrimage to the Holy lands. We look forward to
Carol’s return sometime in June.
I've been a DJ and an entertainment coordinator
in many hotel clubs and discos locally and inter-
nationally for over 20 years. I was involved with
the party planning and event co-ordination with
the Eurasian Association of Singapore for many
years. I moved to Australia in 2009 and settled
in Alice Springs. I finally settled here in Perth as
my son chose to pursue a course of study in Cen-
tral TAFE. I’m very honoured to be able to con-
tribute to AEAWA in whatever way possible,
firstly to increase our membership, also to make
our club vibrant and recognised and a home
away from home for all our Eurasians of all age
groups, backgrounds and ancestry.

Meet the Management Committee 2012/2013
Kay Klass - Functions
Hailing from Singapore, I
am impressed with the
'vision' of the incoming
committee. I have al-
ways been interested in
music and have extensive
experience in organising
social functions and
dances. The 'Winter
Dance' is already on the
cards, but there's more to
come!!
I'm a retired mother of 2 and
grandmother of 5. I am a volun-
teer at Princess Margaret Hospital
and Cancer Council of WA. I was
previously the Functions Coordi-
nator of EA. My present portfolio
is Catering Coordinator for the
Sunday lunches. My wish for the
association is that we could have a
few more volunteer cooks for the
Sunday Lunches. My vision for the association is
that we move forward and continue to cater for the
AEAWA members.
Margaret Chowdhurie - Catering
Sue James - Catering
Sue is a most familiar face in the kitchen where she
inspires with her dedicated work and service. Sue is
away on vacation, and we look forward to having
her back on the committee where she will assist
Margaret with the catering portfolio.
A Malacca boy, I was em-
ployed as a high school
teacher by the State Educa-
tion Department for 25
years. Held the position of
Association Treasurer for 7
years and the Members Af-
fairs Portfolio for the past 6
years. I have a wealth of
knowledge and experience
regarding EA affairs.
Born in Malacca I was a kinder-
garten teacher for 14 years, and
trained in WA as a nurse, with
32 years of service. A Life mem-
ber of the association and wife
of Charles. I have held the Sen-
ior's portfolio for the past 15
years and have worked tire-
lessly organizing activities for
EA members. I have a wealth
of experience and knowledge regarding EA affairs.
Charles Reincastle - Members Affairs
Joan Reincastle - Seniors
Born in Singapore and lived the first
12 years of my life on Pulau Bukom
before coming to Perth. I’m one of
3 in the Sam & Eulis Mitchell Clan
(brother to Jeff and Lesley Sutton).
Our Eurasian heritage is Anglo In-
dian, Sri Lankan, Irish, Scottish and
some French thrown in for good
measure. I have been associated
with the AEAWA through Mum &
Dad being members from the early days. In the last
3 years I’ve been serving as a Committee member,
helping where I can. I’ve concentrated on getting
our Golfing members out onto the golf course and
hope to get more participation this year.

THERE’S A NEW TWIST TO
THE MEMBER’S DRAW
The first name drawn will win
$40 in May.
If that member is not present, we
will continue drawing names until
someone wins a consolation prize
of $30.
The surplus $10 will be added to
the next month’s draw which
then jackpots to $50 and so on.
In other words, one member will
walk away with $30 every lunch,
but to win the jackpot, it’s the
first name drawn.
So be there to win it!!
SPECIALS FOR OUR OVER 80s
Members aged 80 and over from
May 2012 will be given 50% off
of the cost of their main meal.
Members over 90 years will, from
May 2012 receive their main meal
free.
WAIVER OF FEES
As part of our promotion for
our membership drive,
the joining fee of $20.00 will
be waived for any new mem-
bers in May, June and July.
PRE-PAID LUNCH VOUCHERS
In an attempt to serve the lunches faster, a pre-
paid voucher system will be trialled for the May
lunch. This is how it works:
When you arrive you get a numbered ticket as
usual.
You then purchase a lunch voucher at the en-
trance, currently $6 (half price for over 80’s).
You may also purchase a side dish voucher.
When your number is called, present your
numbered ticket plus the voucher at the
kitchen and get your meal.
(N.B: One ticket – one main meal + side dish).
SUGGESTION BOX
The Management Committee
encourages and welcomes con-
structive feedback from mem-
bers. All signed suggestions will
be responded in writing.
From next month this new section will
feature issues of interest.

I must truly acknowledge that I am glad to have served AEAWA for the past years. I enjoy being a social butterfly (a name given to me when I was working at Swan Districts Hospital) because I have a good and hard working sub-committee. Thanks to the following who have agreed to remain in the senior’s sub-committee - Charles my husband, Ernie Lopez, Robert & May Harding, Philomena Noronha, Judy Koek, Lorna Hedges, Dennis & Joan Arklie, Francis & Hellen Tay, Thelma Green & Margaret Chowdhurie. Our first meeting will be held on Monday 23 April, when we will formulate a calendar of events/activities for the new term. Any suggestions and ideas are most welcomed. Again, we wish to stress that the events are for all who are interested - the young, not so young and for the young at heart. We aim to promote a healthy, social and lively fellowship amongst the members of the Association. Keep tuned to the Newsletter for updates. God Bless. See you at the Sunday Lunch, Happy Mothers Day to all mothers, grand- mothers and first time mothers.

Seniors Report ...not just for seniors …
but for all members & friends
The 2012 Chinese Dinner was held at the Wah Sun Restaurant in Walter Road Morley on Saturday 10th March and we had a good
response of 64 members and guests including 3 all the way from Scotland who were house guests of Tony and Lorna Rodrigues. I am eternally grateful to the latter on whose table I was seated for their translation of the thick Gaelic accents ! This isn't the first time AEAWA has patronised the Wah Sun and as we've come to expect the fare was, as usual, absolutely first class albeit we were served one course short but I doubt too many noticed since quite a few confessed to calling a halt to stuffing their faces after the 6th or 7th course. Our Scottish friends apparently had overstretched themselves and didn't make it to our AEAWA Luncheon the day following although I suspect the free flowing Scotch at table may have also been a contributory factor. Our intrepid leader Joan Reincastle successfully negotiated a refund and that money is being used to purchase tickets to one of the big Lotto Draws. Keep your fingers and toes crossed as all diners have a stake and we might all be on a cruise to Hawaii or Tasmania or Rottnest or .... anywhere !! An added bonus during dinner was a free raffle of one lucky winner per table which was much appreciated. Our thanks go to Joan and all her helpers in the Seniors Section for the fine arrangements and the splendid atmosphere of the evening.

I was born in Caterham, Sur-

the British army in Malaysia.
There, I met and married Ann
(nee Sequerah) in 1971 who is
from Malacca. I have served as
secretary of the EA, and been
involved in AEAWA matters for
a long time. As webmaster, I enjoy administer-
ing our website and keeping up with changing
technology.

Formerly from Singapore, I have
lived in Perth since 1988, wife of
Kevin and mum to Mikayla &
Rachelle. I have seen AEAWA
evolve from humble beginnings to
what it is today. I have attended
many functions and lunches and it
has never ceased to amaze me
what dedication, commitment and passion is shown
by the committee and the many volunteers. Having
been a member of AEAWA on and off for a few
years and an ongoing member for the last 20 years, I
decided to make a contribution to AEAWA. This is
why I took on this role and also looking forward to
providing some assistance to the new community
service portfolio.

Happy Mother’s Day
If I could give you diamonds
for each tear you cried for me.
If I could give you sapphires
for each truth you've helped me see.
If I could give you rubies
for the heartache that you've known
If I could give you pearls
for the wisdom that you've shown.
Then you'll have a treasure, mother,
that would mount up to the skies
That would almost match
the sparkle in your kind & loving eyes.
But I have no pearls, no diamonds,
as I'm sure you're well aware
so I'll give you gifts more precious
My devotion, love and care.
Our Warmest Thoughts are with . . all of our members and
their families who are un-
well or grieving. If you
know of someone who
would like to share their
loss, or just need a prayer,
please feel free to contact the committee
or drop us a line.
In memory of all those who have given
their life for their country.
