From the EditorMay is here and what a month it’s going to be. Litton is helping to beat Breast Cancer, with lots of fund raising events during the first week of May. There’s The Tideswell Food festival on the 7th of May which is being filmed by the BBC (their penultimate visit in fact before the programme is broadcast in June or July).

Hopefully you’ve spotted the new display boards adorning Fountain and Bank Squares. Along with the new Tideswell and Litton Loop trails and the information point in Vanilla Kitchen, it’s giving visitors an excuse to stay in the village and spend money in our community rather than parking up and leaving us for the day.

It’s great for our local businesses and great for us all, as loosing any more shops in Tideswell would be bad news for us all.

Let’s hope the sun continues to shine. I’ll speak to you again In June

Help needed at The Village Voice

One of the important ’jobs’ at the Village Voice is to coordinate the

advertising in the magazine. This mainly involves sending out invoices twice a year to our regular advertisers and bullying them when they don’t pay up.

Bob Walkden has done this for a number of years and wishes to step down from the role. If you would like to get involved then Bob would love to her from you as soon as possible - [email protected] or 01298 871804

Red Nose thank you

An enormous thank you to everybody who supported me by ordering breakfast treats

on Saturday 19th March.

Thank you as well to all those who generously made a donation, even though they didn’t want a delivery. A special thank you to our local shops for all their amazing support; hopefully they were rewarded by the extra business on the day. Finally, a big thanks to Ben Holden for his last minute offer of help, which was really appreciated.

I was overwhelmed at the response and together we made an unbelievable amount of £309! I had set myself a target to raise at least £100! Apologies for the deliveries that were late, but I hope you all enjoyed your food.

I personally feel that I helped a lot of people and not just in Tideswell but on the other side of the world like in Africa. If you watched Red Nose Day on the TV that night then

you will have seen the tragedies they have to live through. Just think, even if you donated just a pound then that could have made a huge difference to somebody’s life. Another HUMUNGOUS thank you to everyone, we have made a massive amount of money and we should all be proud.

I really hope that you all enjoyed your special breakfast treats!

Green Communities

Communities in the Peak District are taking the lead on green issues and

sustainability, seeking local solutions for shops and services, food production and renewable energy.

To help them, the Peak District National Park Authority is organising a Green Communities Conference at the Nightingale Centre, Great Hucklow, on Friday 6 May (9.30am-3pm) to capture this energy, enthusiasm and expertise.

The conference will be an opportunity for residents to learn from each other and develop their own environmentally friendly ways of addressing local issues.

Anyone interested in attending this free event should get in touch with the Live & Work Rural team on [email protected] or 01629 816338.

Thank You

The wine tasting evening which took place on the 24th March with John

Hattersley at Vanilla Kitchen raised £416.20, which was even higher than expected!

Thanks to Louise and staff at Vanilla Kitchen, John Hattersley Wines and everyone who attended. And for Raffle prize donations on the night: Poole’s Cavern in Buxton, Holdsworth chocolates in Bakewell, Riccis Italian in Bakewell, Bradley’s Hair salon in Bakewell.

I have now reached my fundraising target so fingers crossed for the training and the actual trip!

Parish Council Matters(This item was sent before the Lightening Tree was removed by the Highways Department of the County Council.)

The Parish Council are pleased to hear about the interest in the “Lightning tree”. None of the council members are tree experts and we rely on the judgement of the Peak Park who are experts in these matters. We await their decision, and wish only to preserve what we can of such an historic and iconic Tideswell artefact.

The Council are considering quotations for mowing in the village.

As readers are aware there should have been a Parish Council election on 5th May, ( on the same day as District Council and Voting System elections). As not enough candidates stood, the current councillors have been returned unopposed. There is also a vacancy for one more councillor.

Sue Barber,Tideswell Parish Council.

Parish Council Precept

Readers in Tideswell will have been interested to see, when their new

council tax notification came through recently, that the parish council precept has risen by 7.4% raising £43,000 for use by the parish council.

The Village Voice has asked the council for a breakdown of how this money is to be spent and why, when other council contributions have not increased, the parish councils has risen.

At the time of writing, we have had no formal response from the council although I have been informally told by a councillor

that although the total budget was agreed at a recent parish council meeting, the budget wasn’t broken down into individual budget headings

It appears that proper accounting records have not been kept in recent months and until these are sorted out, it wasn’t possible to accurately work out the precept for 2011/12.

The Village Voice will continue in its efforts to report on how the council spends your money and would welcome a formal acknowledgement from the parish council.

Christian Aid WeekChristian Aid strives to eradicate poverty and achieve equality, freedom and dignity for all people of all faiths throughout the world.

The people of Tideswell parish always give so generously to Christian Aid for which all of those involved are very grateful. Last year the collection raised £1,354.

Christian Aid Week in Tideswell starts with a united service on Sunday 15 May at 6.00pm in the Roman Catholic Church, Queen Street. The service is open to all.

This year an army of volunteers will be door-to-door collecting between Sunday 15 and Saturday 21 May. It’s not an easy job and requires quite a lot of courage to knock on doors. Your understanding is always appreciated.

If you’d like to know more about Christian Aid and its project work, you can read extensively about it on www.christianaid.org.uk

Dear EditorTRAFFIC ON PARKE RD.

On April Fool’s Day around 5.30pm, a black car came down the hill behind me and hit me as I walked past the Surgery entrance. The car paused at the junction at the bottom of Parke Road and drove off left.

My elbow is bruised and I have a pain from the elbow up to my neck. I think the car wing mirror was bent inwards. The driver didn’t stop. Would he or she have stopped if it had been a child’s head they hurt, not a middle-aged woman’s arm?

I am lucky, but a child might not have been. If the driver was a Village Voice reader...please please please take care when you drive.

You appeared to be talking to the people in your car, but it all happened so quickly I cannot identify the car or driver....

Get GrowingAll the joys of spring are here,

Lush green veg, blossoming flowers, oh so near.

Time to dig, plant and water in,

Any container, pot, wellies, bucket or bin.

Tiny seedlings with care grow so fast,

With food, sun and water cropping could be vast.

On August 20th to the show they’ll go,

The fruits of your labour all will know.

Community, friendship and knowledge are all found,

At Tidza’s Open Show, so spread it around.

The time has come to start the sowing,

To join us all you need to do is GET GROWING.

On the Beat

With the onset of the warmer weather the security of your home,

vehicles and sheds becomes a priority. When leaving your home please remember to secure windows and doors making sure bikes and garden equipment are secured and your sheds locked. When you are in your garden please remember to lock your door and windows for extra security.

Landrovers in the area are still an issue so please make sure you secure your vehicle when you leave it keeping your keys safe and out of sight when you are at home/work and use a good quality security device such as a steering lock. Steering locks are available at a subsidised price for Landrover owners from Buxton Police station enquiry office.

The Community Speed Watch Scheme in Litton is now up and running and the first two volunteers have undergone training. They will now carry out speed checks in the Litton area. We still need volunteers in other areas; anyone interested can contact me.

The Tideswell Pub watch Scheme which initially involved The Anchor, The George, The Horse & Jockey and The Star in Tideswell, The Red Lion in Litton and The Anglers Rest in Millers Dale, has now been successfully extended to include pubs further afield. The pub watch message is “any person who commits an act of violence or is involved in a drug related incident on or outside these licensed premises will be liable to a ban from all of the public houses by the licensee’s”.

Drugs remain an issue throughout

Derbyshire and we would like your help with any information regarding unusual gatherings of vehicles, motorcycles or mopeds as this could be a sign of drug drops. Any concerned parents or relatives should contact a member of their Safer Neighbourhood Team; any information will be treated in the strictest confidence. The message is simple “Illegal drugs wreck lives”.

I would like to draw your attention to yellow no waiting cones (NWC). They pop up all over the place outside private drives and in villages where parking is at a premium however unless they are placed on the road by a police officer or their agent, they have no lawful meaning and on occasion can be construed as an obstruction of the highway. The police did have a large number of NWCs but their number has dwindled (they are identifiable by the embossed “Derbyshire Constabulary” lettering) I would like to invite our stray NWCs back to the fold. No questions will be asked, just give us a call. Any of NWCs seen on the road are likely to be suddenly repatriated and perhaps questions asked of their temporary unauthorised keeper. Flowers for Wakes

You are invited to use this week as an opportunity to place flowers in church -

perhaps to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, the birth of a child or in memory of a loved one.

There will be places round the church where your tributes can be placed (perhaps with a card alongside), together with the usual annual Wakes flowers.

Areas will be marked for your posy, bunch of flowers, plant or arrangement.

This invitation is open to everybody and all age groups both males & females.

If this appeals to you please ring Pat Thornton on 872301 before May 31st to enable us to allocate sufficient places.

Items will need to be placed between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on Firday June 17th.

Let your imagination have fun.

Tideswell Arts Festival Wakes week this year will get a boost with Tideswell’s Arts Festival which will be held in St John’s Church, Cathedral of the Peak

Local bands, musicians, singers, rock, folk, acoustic, jazz, classical and choir performances, theatre, dance and open mike night are all planned!

The Festival will run from Friday 17th June to Friday 25th June during Wakes Week most evenings (except Litton Night of course!) and some afternoons.

If you’re interested in getting involved the please contact us on [email protected]

Soroptimists in BuxtonThe Pesident, Elaine Mcdonald of Whaley Bridge, Vice President Heather Worsley of Buxton and Programme Action Officer, Sue Barber from Tideswell are currently working on plans for a visit from Kirteminder Soroptimists.

They arrive from Denmark in June and will be hosted by Buxton members. Sadly, these happy events have been overshadowed by the disasters in Japan. Several Japanese Soroptimist Clubs have been in touch with our group to say that in towns elsewhere other groups have been wiped out. We are keeping in touch to be able to assist when and where possible.

High Peak Diabetic GroupOn June 6th at 7.0pm , at the Portland Hotel, Buxton, the diabetic group welcomes Richard lane, OBE, President of Diabetes UK.

He is the first surviving, successful islet transplant patient, and will speak to the group about his experiences. He is an inspirational speaker, and all are welcome to the talk.

For more details please phone Sue Barber on 01298 871644.

Thank youI am just writing to you to thank those who supported our coffee morning on the 9th April. We raised £200 in aid of Cancer Research UK & RSPCA. At the beginning of May, Tideswell is going to become a Foodie Paradise for

a day.

There will be rolling demos in the School of Food, tea and wine tasting, food and craft stalls, and lots of foodie activities for children. The excellent foods from our local shops will be on show along with other local producers. The Horse and Jockey are holding a beer festival and as the pieces below show, there’ll be music from Tideswell Band, a play reading and singing in the church.

This is a real showcase for the village, and we hope that everyone who wants to will get involved – if you’ve got an idea, please share it and we can all try and make it happen. The whole event will be filmed by the BBC, so if you fancied being on the small screen, this could be your chance!

Contact the School of Food with any ideas or suggestions: pop a note through the letter box, or call 01298 871262 or email [email protected]

present The Legion Dinner and Other Stories, a new play by Nick Brelsford, in a rehearsed reading.

Six stories, connected only by food, from a dinner guest to an ex-butcher, a home baker to a professional chef. What is it that makes food so much more important than something we just eat?

Nick is fresh from Liverpool International Write Now One Act Play Festival, where his play The Bridge received excellent reviews.

No charge. Look out for posters with more details of performance time and location. Further information on [email protected] or 01298 871063. Follow Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter.

Tideswell Theatre is also supporting Tideswell Arts Festival in St John the Baptist Church during Wakes Week. Watch out for more information!

Bluebell Wood Hospice

The village has done it again. Thanks to all who supported our special coffee

morning and helped us raise £729.

Thank you to all who donated prizes including Peak Posies, Carol’s hairdressing and Vanilla Kitchen and individuals who donated cakes, lemon curd and jams etc.

Thank you to everyone who supported us on the day and worked hard to raise such a magnificent amount in under two hours.

Dear Editor

As an elderly resident I was appalled and most disgusted to witness two adults laid

out in the churchyard sun bathing complete with rugs and bags of shopping.

What has happened to respect for consecrated ground and the people interred within it? A number of adults and children cycled through it and it is a paradise for dogs as well, some on leads and some roaming without owners.

History Club

The FitzHerberts of Tissington Hall were the fascinating subject for

April’s meeting of the History Club and Ruth Jordan gave a very informative talk illuminated by some very lively anecdotes,

Here’s one for starters - A recent incumbent was so unimpressed with the cost of running the the place, that he said that it had --

“48 chimney’s,

61 rooms,

7 staircases,

7 bathrooms ---- and hot water on Sundays”

Of course anyone who has been round the Hall lately will know that it has been restored beautifully over recent years. The gardens and surroundings carefully maintained, so that they are not as an early guidebook quoted --”The scenery is as bleak and comfortless as the people”

It seems that some FitzHerberts came over from Normandy with William the Conqueror, They later added their signature to Magna Carta, and together with the Beresfords, the Curzon’s of Keddlestone and the Cockayne’s of Ashbourne formed a posse from Derbyshire to fight with Henry V at Agincourt.

The religious persecutions of the Tudor period feature highly in the family’s history and some of the Fitzherberts were in residence at Padley Hall near Grindleford when one of their number - “Thomas the Traitor” denounced two outlawed priests who were hiding there, including Tideswell’s Nicholas Garlick. And as we know they were later brutally executed

at Derby. (A part of the body of Nicholas Garlick is buried in Tideswell churchyard -- see the plaque on the left-hand gatepost on the main gates).

Another religious hangover from those times, is still seen in the spelling of the family name with the capital “H”. So that FitzHerbert denotes the protestant side of the family, whilst Fitzherbert denotes the catholic branch.

On a much lighter note, one of the more recent Baronets was once heard asking the vicar to remember a damsel in distress in his prayers which he duly did. On being questioned about it later the Baronet said “Oh Damsel in Distress” - That’s my horse running in the two o’clock next week!

The present incumbent, the ninth Baronet, is Sir Richard FitzHerbert who was a wine merchant in London and only 24 years old when he inherited the title and estate. He has spent the last 24 years steadily improving the place.

A brilliant talk, which brings our season of lectures to a close, but we hope to be back on the second Thursday in November - See you then!

Memories WantedDid you work on the Midland Railway through the Peak District? If you did and are happy to talk about your memories in early May, I’d like to ask you questions about your job and record you talking.

This is for a project to promote the history of the line to visitors. Excerpts of interviews will appear on the Peak Park website to celebrate the re-opening of the railway tunnels on the Monsal Trail.

Please call Bill Bevan on 0114 2345411.

Special Occasions & Weddings

The Community GardenLast year a small band of fool hardy souls supported by Taste Tideswell, started to transform a small patch of church land into a community garden. A garden for us all in Tideswell to enjoy.

To create a beautiful garden we knew we had some hard work ahead, but boy did we underestimate the challenge that faced us. Thick scrub had grown over the land for many years, every inch of ground was covered in broken glass and as any Tideswell gardener knows, every time we put our spade into the ground we hit limestone.

Twelve months later, whilst we’re not quite there, we have achieved a lot and best of all a whole bunch of Tidza folk have donated their time and energy to the garden – and had a bit of fun at the same time.

I’m really proud of our compost. With peelings from Vanilla Kitchen and the School of Food, mash from the nano-brewery and grass clippings from the church yard; I think Tideswell has the most communal compost in the UK!

2011 will see lots more happening in your community garden. Our biggest aim is to make the site more attractive and more accessible, so everyone can enjoy the garden in full bloom. Major landscaping work is happening right now, with new stone walls being built to help level the ground. We’re planting a native fruiting hedgerow that has been donated by the Woodland Trust.

We’d like to build a new seating area, with benches, tables and maybe even a communal BBQ but to make this happen we need your help.

The community garden is dependant on people, we don’t have lots of cash to spend so need as much help as we can get. If you would like to pop over to the garden and see what it’s all about then we meet on the last Sunday of every month at the garden. Alternatively give me a call and I can show you around.

Bowl’d OverHello bowlers & non bowlers with, unfortunately, another apology, for being incoherent, rambling, babbling, offensive, sexist, insulting, rude & not making this page worth reading. As banjaxed as I am I will now attempt to write something about bowling that’ll be so anodyne, dull & boring that you’ll thank me for curing your insomnia. I will now knock you out with bowling results.

Event 1; the green opened on 26th March, well prepared by the Bratts Mafia, Elaine Chapman won the bottle of fizz; a bizarre comp requiring everybody standing purposely around the green to launch bowls at the bottle in the middle whilst we prepared for the fun afternoon. In the meantime, the slightly warm southwesterly vespers turn into a vicious, unforgiving east wind reducing us all to blue-faced hypothermic shivering wrecks who all went home to bathe in hot gin. Somebody won something but I was so cold I was trying to catch up with my chattering teeth – could’ve been Matt Bratts trying to reduce his student debt.

Event 2; Now it’s serious entertainment; it’s April 1st an auspicious day for the club’s annual dinner compered by the sartorially elegant (i.e. wearing a suit) David Bradwell. The dinner was postponed from December because of snow but we still had a fun turkey dinner, games & dancing and a little rock’n’roll with the rascally Wain & Wrighty’s curious bowling quiz. And people got prizes for good bowling but being rabbits wasn’t good bowling. Congrats. to all the winners.

Event 3 on April 5th A first for us playing in the High Peak Mixed Pairs league against last year’s winners, Tintwistle, at home we lost. No names no pack drill but we didn’t do that badly.

Event 3. April 7th Thurs. friendly league we played Wirksworth & had a good win.

Event 4. April 9th a coaching day which was interesting, however my attempt to claim my

money back cos it didn’t work is still being negotiated. 20 people seemed to have fun – so they said.

Event 5/8. April 11th & 15th. Time to wake up cos it’s Blood on the Green Mon. night Buxton league at home against last year’s winners Burbage. Even tho’ we lost we played well apart from me who got 7 points v 21 so I was dropped for Andrew Turner (the man with relatives in places yet to be discovered) to play in a SERIOUS pairs comp. against Burbage at Lafarge when the team looked like, despite trying hard, something that I had on my plate at the annual dinner. However Terry Shaw & Matt got 14 whilst Bob Eyre & John got a score that we don’t talk about – similar to one that Dave Brats got in another comp. Here I am as the height of discretion when slipped the appropriate folding drinking voucher.

Event 7. April 12th, the mixed up pairs play away against Chapel where Bob Eyre & partner (not sure if she wants a mention) attempt to set a world record for being on the green for 1 hour & 50 minutes – which is a long time to shiver in the dusk for the spectators.

Event 8. April14th the vets play away against Chatsworth where we manage a good win but the ducks on the green (I kid you not) conspired to limit Roy’s score to 5.

Event 9 on April 18th back with Blood on the Green away against Birch Hall bowling up & down a cliff face where Bouncing Bob wins 21/12, Dave Bratts, crowing like a cockerel, wins 21/8 & Andrew, Robin Hood & Griff get 20 between them; but John Hallows (aka RH) doesn’t want to be associated with us.

Finally event 9 with the mixed pairs, eventually finding the green at Trades Hall (knocked down some time ago), manage to lose in the dusk. However Bouncing Bob & the Stylish Cath Wain got convincing win of 21/16, even tho’ it took 1 hour 20 mins. And Cath’s sacked her last partner Andrew.

Griff
