Relying on the spirit and story of the gospels, First Christian Church is supported primarily by donations. There is no charge for any event. We rely on freely given offerings to support our various minis-tries and opportunities.

Your contributions and gifts allow us to continue to be a radically inclusive, justice-driven community of faith every day of the week. Thank you in advance for your gifts.

Matt’s MinuteIn case you missed it, we celebrated Pentecost on Sunday. I don’t know about you, but I think it could have used more fanfare. We needed more banners, or streamers or red, flame-y things. I talked about getting out the confetti canon, but in the end decided not to. Many of us wore red though and we did talk about the Holy Spirit. One of the ways that I believe the Holy Spirit shows up in our lives is through conviction. The Spirit can compel us, propel us and convict us to do some-thing, say something or believe some-thing. One of the convictions I felt on Sunday was a calling for us to continue exploring the possibilities and the depths of our relationship with our neighbors. We were able to hear from Aleita Haas-Holcombe, president of the Corvallis Daytime Drop-In Center (CDDC), who challenged to consider the difference between solidarity and charity. What I heard was the two are not necessarily exclusive, but that the call towards solidarity is a deeper, more engaged commitment. This chal-lenge comes on the heels of a deci-sion to make a 2-year commitment to provide a home for the CDDC in our

basement every Monday – Friday from 9 -2. We are approaching a decade of connection and commitment to this organization and other organizations providing direct service to homeless persons. Last week I spent an after-noon with a group of faith leaders talk-ing about homelessness and poverty. Last week I also spent an evening with the Thriving Communities 2040 Initia-tive, a team I was invited to be on. The intent of this initiative is to work with community leaders on systemic issues around livability and sustainability for Benton County. I was asked to con-sider homeless and poverty issues and how they connect to the larger pic-ture. This is an exciting project for me because I believe it begins to address systemic issues. While direct service is crucial, we need go beyond this. Feed-ing the poor is a worthy and needed activity, but we must ask questions about why there are poor and food insecure people in our community. This is all to say, I believe we could be thinking deeper on these issues. Where do we begin? I’m glad you asked. I want to challenge everyone in our church to read one book over the summer: Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help, And How to Reverse It by Robert Lupton. I believe this book helps us examine what we are doing right and is a challenging indictment of what we are doing wrong. The book can be purchased on Amazon and I can order you a copy for $10. Just let me know if you would like me to order you a copy. Peace, Matt

A couple of weeks ago in Sunday School the middle and younger classes talked about families, and most espe-cially the wonderful women in their lives like mothers and grandmothers. They used watercolors to express their love for these special women.

The older class had an opportunity to make a card for their mom, while plan-ning and discussing next week’s agenda of making a movie of The Prodigal Son. The older kids came up with some great ideas for the movie and were very involved with brainstorming the scenes, costumes, and dialogue.

Looking Forward to SummerJune 12 is Promotion Sunday and then we begin Summer Sunday School.

All three of our Sunday School classes (younger, middle, and older) will be held during the summer and we will follow our normal pattern of having Sunday School the first three Sundays of the month and on the fourth Sun-day, the children stay in worship. Also, all the children will be painting tiles. These tiles will be made into triv-ets and sold to support the Craft Fair. Finally, don’t forget that Wednesday Picnics in the Park will start on June 22 and will be held every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Willamette Park. Bring your own food and come to share an informal summer evening together. There is always some sort of family and child friendly activity, ranging from folk dancing to disc golf.

Corvallis Youth CollectiveThe Corvallis Youth Collective is holding a cook-out and s’mores event for youth ages 6th grade and up on Sunday, June 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational UCC. Please contact Matt for more details!
