Feedstock classifications
• Waste
– “…any substance or object that the holder discard or intends or is required to discard” – Includes excreta produced by animals
– Ensure waste hierarchy has been applied and alternative markets have been considered before using them for energy generation
– Manure, slurry, food waste, distillation residues, pressings from veg oil production
• Agricultural residues
– “…residues generated in the processing of harvesting the material being sought.” – Straw, sugar beet tops, in-field vegetable waste
• Processing residues
– “…a substance that is not the end product(s) that a production process directly seeks to produce. It is not a primary aim of the production process and the process has not been deliberately modified to produce it.”
– Outgrade vegetables, whey, vinasse

“Anaerobic digestion (AD) represents the best environmental outcome for waste that cannot be prevented or be redistributed to others or, if this is not possible, used as animal feed. It provides both low carbon renewable energy and digestate, which can be used as fertiliser, compost, or soil improver.”

Agri-food waste production
• The unavoidable wastes showing
the greatest potential are:
o Manure, from livestock
o Straw, from cereals & oilseeds
o Pomace, from fruit processing
o Leaves, pomace and peel, from
vegetables
