Importance of Health and Sanitation esp. Toilets

• Sanitation is the hygienic means of promoting health through prevention of human contact with the hazards of wastes. Hazards can be either physical, microbiological, biological or chemical agents of disease. Wastes that can cause health problems are human and animal feces, solid wastes, domestic wastewater (sewage, sullage, greywater), industrial wastes, and agricultural wastes

• . Hygienic means of prevention can be by using engineering solutions (e.g. sewerage and wastewater treatment), simple technologies (e.g. latrines, septic tanks), or even by personal hygiene practices (e.g. simple handwashing with soap).

• Basic sanitation - refers to the management of human feces at the household level. This terminology is the indicator used to describe the target of the Millennium Development Goal on sanitation.

• On-site sanitation - the collection and treatment of waste is done where it is deposited. Examples are the use of pit latrines, septic tanks, and imhoff tanks.

• Step 2.• Immerse the plunger in the toilet or

sink allowing the hollow bell section to fill with water.

• Step 3.• Place the opening of the bell over the

opening of the toilet or the drain of the sink. The handle of the plunger should be perpendicular to base of the toilet or sink.

Page 14: Maxima

• Step 4. • Place your hands around the

other end of the plunger handle one above the otherStep 5.

• Push down on the handle with a quick and forceful thrust towards the toilet opening or drain. This will, in effect, force the obstruction down the drain and allow the standing water to follow.

Page 15: Maxima

• Step 6.• Lift the plunger out of the water and

observe the water level. If it empties out of the basin, you have successfully unclogged your toilet or sink. If the water level remains the same or goes down only partially, repeat the steps above until the obstruction is cleared. Once there is no more standing water, flush the toilet again or run water in the sink to make sure you have solved the problem. If after several attempts no progress is made, you may have to consult a professional.
