Mouth is the first part of digestive system which receives the food that we eat. Food is broken down by our teeth into smaller particles by means of chewing.

Next path of the food is the esophagus; it is a tube that connects our mouth to the stomach (also known as gullet).

We have the so called epiglottis, it is placed at the top of the windpipe that acts as a gate and closes so that the food does not go down the windpipe.

The main function of the stomach is to store food. The stomach has flexible walls which can expand or contract depending on the amount of food inside. Stomach produces hydrochloric acid that kills germs inside of it.

Small intestine where most of the digestion process takes place, it is long, coiled, tube which can extend for more than 6 meters. It serves as the main absorber of digested food for delivery into the various parts of the body. Here, food is digested into very small particles that it can be finally absorbed by the blood in the body.

It is where we can find the so called villi, one that absorbed the digested food in the small intestine.

Large intestine foods that are digested go here. It is about 5cm wide and 1.8m long. Its function is to reabsorb the water and minerals in the undigested food and bring it back to the body. Without this, our body would be dehydrated.

Rectum is located at the end of large intestine. Solid waste is placed here or stored, until it is brought out of the body through the anus.
