What an amazing event it was to kick off the 2013 tour. Head judge Keith Teboul fit in a full double elimination contest over three days with an insane amount of action.

YOUTHThe youth final came down to Casey Rehrer against Fiona Wylde. Both looked very strong but Rehrer slashy style and bigger jumps gave him the crown over Wylde. Here is what Casey had to say after the event - Santa Cruz was super fun, the wind was a little on shore and the waves were anywhere from knee high to chest high. I sailed my 4.2 mutant every day, it was perfect in all conditions. Apart from the cold, Santa Cruz is super fun!

MEN’S PROThe Double Elimination ended with head-to-head battles against each of the finalists from the Single bracket. Juban narrowly defeated Morgan Noireaux in the first man-on-man heat earning the right to take on Bernd Roediger. Juban was on a roll and advanced to challenge Levi Siver in the Quarter Final for 3rd place. This was a super close heat with Siver taking out Juban with his Wave360 as the heat came to a close. Both had big jump scores with Siver sticking a nice one-handed Back Loop and Juban nailing a tweaked Push Loop. The semi final saw Brawzinho aginst Siver. In the end it was Brawzinho who had better scores and advanced to meet Kevin Pritchard in the final and winning the contest in the end.

Here is Camille Juban comment - Once again we were pretty lucky on the conditions this year in Wadell, Casey and Ingrid did really good in the single elimination. Casey went out on the quarter final and me on the semi but we got a chance to come back in the double elimination as the condition were a little better, the 4.2 Mutant was the sails I used in every single heat and it couldn’t better. So I did came back in the double by winning 4 heats until the heat against Levi Siver where it was really close but I lost and took the 4th place. I’m now motiveted and can’t wait for Pistol River to fight back.

WOMEN’S DIVISIONWith only one rider advancing to the final, Wylde was on fire hitting some aggressive lips and earning the right to battle Ingrid Larouche for the title. Over the next few contests expect to see these two women match up in some heated battles. Larouche’s experienced shone through with her scoring the best wave of the heat and her clean Forward Loop made sure she defended her title. Congrats to Ingrid Larouche, the AWT Santa Cruz Goya Windsurfing Tour Womens champion!

MASTERSThe Masters final also took two heats with defending champ Brian Caserio up against Ferdinando Loffreda. Caserio scored better in the rematch but it wasn’t enough to match Loffreda’s vertical hits. Congrats to the new champ.

Comments from Ferdinando - The event was in a very beautiful place, near Santa Cruz. The AWT organized the event very well. We were all together the all contest. We had wind and waves everyday. Highlights to Browzino that showed us how he can rides waves and do tricks and moves like a VIDEO GAME good performances of Morgan Noireaux (6TH) and Bernd Roediger (5TH)..... Really good rides of Camille Juban 4th - very narrow and sharp turns some really high back loops. Levi 3rd did some really good rides aerials tweaked backloops and wave 360. KP was precise like machine, very consistent but he couldn’t do anything against the stellar performances of Browzino.

’14inPRODUCTIONThe 2014 wave/freestyle sail designs are done and in production. Here are a few brief highlights intended to induce daydream drooling in anticipation.

Throughout the 2014 wave ranges reworked the construction details, reducing weight while maintaining 100% durability. This was achieved by strategic trimming of patches and reduction of seams combined with expanded use of our light weight laminates. The result throughout the ranges has been lighter feel and crisper, livelier handling.

The 2014 4-batten, ultra-compact Mutant has undergone another full season of testing and refinement, with tension and shaping adjustments intended to expand wind range and further improve handling and responsiveness. You can experience the Mutants revolutionary handling, incredible maneuverability and “size larger” power thoughout a wider range than ever.

Maui Monthly no.97. May ’13.8

Page 9: Maui Monthly Magazine Issue #97 May 2013

The Ghost incorporates increased use of the ultra light and strong Technora scrim and is even more ridiculously light than ever. We have fine tuned the Legend and Ghost designs to achieve perfect balance and stability to the point where they must be the most refined wave sails out there.

The Global and Switch lines continue to satisfy the power needs of those who sail in onshore/ bump and jump conditions and show great versatility when conditions aren’t perfect.

The 2014 Loco Pro is a brand new design developed for Taty with 4 battens from 4.0 to 5.6. These sails feel superlight in the hands and reflect some of the shaping ideas that we developed in the Mutant but adapted to a higher aspect dedicated freestyle outline.

Visually the 2014 sails look quite fresh with some sleeve print artwork and new stylish graphics and colours. Our panel layouts follow structurally functional lines designed to support the sail body tension while still flowing aesthetically.

indsurfing Tour

In May I returned to Oregon from my trip in North Carolina. I ended up having to change my plans of traveling to Europe and participate in the “British Wavesailing tour” to stay home and work. But staying in the Gorge ended up being quite amazing. May was absolutely beautiful with temperatures in the 90’s; a lot of sun and yes, wind!I scored a few great sessions between work at the hatchery and doug’s beach on my 3.7 and 2.9 legend. So fun to get back into freestyle and crazy windy jumping!

THE GORGE & SANTA CRUZ

Maui Monthly no.97. May ’13.10

Page 11: Maui Monthly Magazine Issue #97 May 2013

It’s even more motivating with the “Gorge freestyle Frenzy” coming up in July to go out and push myself to learn new moves. Stoked that the AWT chose my photo for the poster of the event!

I left Hood River towards the end of the month and drove 14 hours south to get to Santa Cruz and get a few days of practice at Waddell Creek in preparation for the first stop of the American Windsurfing Tour. I got there in time to catch a south swell that was providing nice overhead to logo high waves and, with cross-shore wind, gave me a few very fun sessions on my 3.8 and 4.2 mutant. Unfortunately, the south swell was gone by the time the event started on the 30th and the single elimination was run in smaller, challenging on-shore windswell conditions. I did well in the women’s division against great riders like Fiona Wylde or Miho Tanaka and took first in the single elimination. Double elimination has just started as I am writing this newsletter, and am hoping for better conditions to go defend my 1st place standing!! Stay tuned for final results!

As every year I was still in maui in the beginning of may, unfortunateley the conditions were not good enough to train the way I wanted to prepare the year and I had to shoot with Quatro so I was very limited.

Around middle of May I had to go back in Guadeloupe to finalize a new sponsorship with "Orange", which is now official. I also took advantage of the free time I had in Gwada to physically train for Santa Cruz by lot of running and swimming. I stayed a little bit more then a week at home and that was just what I needed to see my familly, friends... and to recharge the batteries for the California trips.

My girlfriend and I arrived the night before the Santa Cruz Goya Windsurf Festival, next morning the conditions were pretty good, a little oneshore but good and consistent wind with some logo hight waves in the set.

On the first day we ran two round and I passed them without difficulty but that made me advance on the semi final against Kevin Pritchard, Marcilio “Brawzinho” Browne and Bryan Metcalf Perez .

We did this semi final on the next day and Brawzinho just had an amazing heat with many double forwards and some good waves so he won the heat and it was really close between Kevin and I but I guess his 20 years of contest experience paid off so he passed in front of me in this heat and I missed the final from couple points.

The day after we did the double elimination and I was very motiveted and won 4 heats against, Kai Katchadorian, Francisco Goya, Morgan Noireaux, Bernd Rodiger.... to arrive against Levi Siver for the 3° place. I was in front of him the whole heat until he lended a 360 and by that time I knew I needed a better wave and I wanted to do I good tweaked air but unfortunatley I didn’t find the good wave and he won tht heat.I’m a little disappointed to miss the podium but I passed many heats in the double elimination and I learned from that.

After Santa Cruz I’m gonna visit with my girlfriend for one week before the clinic in San Francisco Bay (Berkeley and Crissy Field) on June 8 and 9th. Next stop: Pistol River!

I planned to do the "Taty Challenge" on may 4th, but due to the lack of wind I windsurfed from Bonaire to Curacao on May 9th in 1 hour and 40 minutes. So I accomplished my goal of breaking my own record (in 2009: 2h15m). The main reason of this event was a fundraising for my friend windsurfer-fisherman who suffered a stroke a few months ago.

After that I participated at the "Curacao Windsurf Challenge" during the weekend. My results were: 1st place in slalom men, 1st place in SUP racing and 3rd place in the tow in freestyle competition.

After that I spent about a week on Bonaire doing slalom sailing and not as much freestyle as the wind was a bit to light. There was also a freestyle and slalom competition here on Bonaire where I finished 1st in slalom and 4th in freestyle.

I went to Saint Lucia on the 16-27 for the photoshoot of Mystic. St lucia is a great Island and with so much nice people, hadn’t sailed much there as the wind was not enough for my freestyle gears, but the photoshoot went amazing.

Back in Bonaire I helped out with organizing the 9th Prokids event andOn may 29th I was on the tv-show "Entrevista ku Energia" they did a 1hour

ACTION PACKED MAY

interview about my life from beginning until now and how the windsurfing change my life etc etc.

On the 30th of may I have also received the award of "Athlete of the month".On that same day I went to do the forward loop with the 372 cm mistral racing board with the Mauisails switch 6.0, you can check the clip on www.continentseven.comNow I’m taken part of the Prokids event in Sorobon, which looks like a success as well. I feel honored that they dedicated this event to me. and being named the ROLE MODEL :)So it has been a very busy and special month.

On the 31st was the open ceremony of the Pro Kids event and also the night freestyle competition where I got to finish 1st place :) What is next is Costa Brava. Follow me on www.facebook.com/taty.frans page for more great news. CiaoTaty Frans

MAY ONMAUIAfter a long disappointing week in Korea it was back to Maui and back to work. I would have just about a month to try and tune up my gear and myself to be ready for the second PWA event of the year. Thankfully the trade winds had come back and it was starting to feel more like summer time in Maui with wind every day and not much surf on the north shore. I was also very fortunate to get a number of very good days of wind on bigger slalom gear as well as the small stuff so I really felt like I had a well rounded block of training time this past month.

I also helped out Art a bit with some of the bigger Mutant wave sails, just finalizing the newer designs but I was lucky to be able to try these new designs in the 5.1 and 5.6 and see the improvements that were made. I didn’t get to many waves to try them in but I still had a couple of fun sessions at baby beach and upper Kanaha where there were some waves to ride.

The last week of May was spent getting ready for not only Costa Brava but also for the first Maui Race Series of the summer. I had a few good sessions of buoy and start practice with the local race crew out at Kanaha on 7.0 and 7.6 TR9’s and my 66 and 59 JP slalom boards. All in all May was a good balance of training, racing, rest and family time so I am feeling recharged and ready to go for some more racing!!

TRAVELING AND EPIC ADVENTURESMay was jam packed with traveling and epic adventures, from Maui to the US West Coast, logging over 1,200 miles driving in 2 weeks, and scoring epic conditions at every spot along the way!

I stuck around Maui for the first two weeks of the month hoping for one last north swell to hit Hookipa before having to leave. We had a few good days but by the 15th I was ready to get back to the mainland and into my van and officially kick of the 2013 season! With my van parked at my parent’s house in LA, I had been watching the swell forecast for Baja with the hope that a spring South would make it’s way to San Carlos in a timely fashion. When the vids from Teahupoo started to roll in, we knew something big was on the way! Only one day after arriving back on the mainland, the van was packed and we were off to San Carlos. It had been over 3 years since I’d been back, and just like I’d remembered, it was paradise. Our 4 day quick mission quickly turned into an 8 day adventure of perfect overhead-logo/mast high waves, perfectly glassy for surfing all morning, and then filling in during the afternoon for epic 3.8-4.6 Mutant wavesailing sessions, catching wave after wave, with only a few friends on the water with me!

After an epic week in San Carlos, it was back to the parent’s compound in LA to debrief, unwind, do a lot of cleaning, pack back up, and head out north for Santa Cruz and the first stop of the AWT Tour. A ‘little’ less epic than San Carlos per-se, Waddell still managed to deliver, in spite of a terrible forecast, 4.2-5.1 winds with head high windswell, providing fun conditions all week for freesailing and the main event. The MauiSails crew killed it in Santa Cruz, with amazing performances from all riders, and Ingrid Larouche and Casey Rehrer bringing home 1st place in the Women and Amateur divisions! With only two weeks to go I’m looking forward to the next stop at Pistol River!

WOW. The month of May has been excellent for packing and shipping to destinations all over the USA (we supply the Mainland from Hawaii still). I have been busy emptying the warehouse and in some cases finding it hard to keep up with certain items. Carbon booms come and go so fast that sometimes they can go out in the same boxes they come in, something I really like. And the Mutant! What a reception we are getting for this new wave machine. For sure Art has hit the gong hard and wave sailors have taken note of the power and range of these special sails. It must be, because it’s difficult to have them in stock.

And all of this is just getting us ready for the arrival of the next round of 2014 wave and freestyle sails that will take us into the Fall surf season. May is always the month for finishing a line of works that began in December, and all during May we are putting the finishing touches on every new thing for late June production. Topping the list this year was the conversion of the Loco into a four batten layout, including further weight reduction and fine tuning the adaptation. Obviously this is not as simple as just taking a batten away and moving the rest around, as the location of the battens influences the shape/tension relationships so important to getting the most out of what is otherwise something that appears quite simple. In fact, the simple usually requires more tuning just because there are less shaping points to work with for fairing and smoothing.

Micah continues to spend a lot of time on the water even though the race schedule is limited this year, and now he is getting ready to do the U.S. Nationals in Southern California. The venue is fairly dependable for wind (we used to refer to it as Hurricane Gulch) and the scene for observation and beach activity should be excellent if the past events held there are any indication. As a reference to his speed potential, we had the first Maui Race Series event this past weekend and he won every heat by large margins, often holding back at the starts to be safe, then blowing by the crowd with apparent ease. After the minimal first event in Korea, I was glad to see he has the stuff when the conditions get real. Looks good for Cabrillo.

SAILING LAHAINA ON SV CORNELIAhttp://youtu.be/uEJuYTY0DQ4

On the personal front, we finally finished the entire main deck of Cornelia with Raptor Deck, so now we have the largest SUP on the water. What a pleasure compared to normal ’non-skid’ which will abrade your skin off and wreck your clothes. We got to go sailing with Art and his family, and Caroline, our Chief of Administration, and had a great day with fine wind. Art’s daughter, Maja, who is eight, got lots of time on the helm, steering like a pro with the big genoa up, doing six knots to weather. Once she got the hang of it I was amazed at her concentration and understanding while she kept all 33,000 lbs going steady on in the light wind. Many adults would be challenged to do this, and she did it all on her own for a long time. I told her she has a knack to be a good helmsman/person if she wants to do it more. Then we finished the day with an amazing double rainbow show over Lahaina, due to unusual heavy rain as we returned home, a chilly soaking while we put the boat away.

Water is fun!Aloha, Barry Spanier
