Seems like times fly too fast. It feels like a couple days ago I was in Maui for a photoshoot, then suddenly I was on the plane to Austria to compete in the second PWA Freestyle World Cup event. A 5th position was not bad but also not good. I could have done better, but taking the wrong sail size was just a fraction of a mistake to not making it on the podium. "Bummer".

Flying back home to Bonaire got me thinking what to do in the next event. Simple. Get it all together and know what you want to achieve. At times what you think and believe is what you attract. so let’s see if this really is true.

The month of May didn’t get so much wind on the island. There were three days where I sailed on the 4.8 Loco, two days on the 5.6 Loco and about six days on the Loco 5.2. I had slalom training with my friend Patun, loving the TR7 6.6... great sail full of speed. I really can’t wait for Fuerteventura and Aruba Hi wind slalom sailing.

Plus my freestyle moves are better and now I am more confident. I am enjoying each day, sailing with my daughter at full speed with the TR7 6.6 and my Isonic 107 Carbon. She REALLY likes sailing with me and having her is just making me more happy. For now I am just waiting for the wind to pick up so that I can train a bit more before the KING OF THE CARIBBEAN PWA WORLD CUP FREESTYLE EVENT.

Oooo I Almost forgot, the guys from UMI also came to Bonaire to film Tonky, Kiri and Me for an online movie that will be released shortly. On the 24th was my birthday and my daughter came to the beach and it was the best gift for my birthday.

Well take care peeps.C ya’ll on my next report.

Trippingand trainingThe final week on Maui after a long stint, and all of a sudden your routine of sailing, testing and getting fit gets disrupted and you have to start making a plan to leave. When the gear is finally checked in you can really sit back, relax and say "damn, I had a good time!". Maui is and will always be special and I do get sad to leave.

I arrived in Holland to some nice breezes, which came in handy as I had to test some new Fanatic 2012 Slalom boards, right before Korea. Straight back on the plane again to continue my eastward journey towards the far east that has been in the news a lot lately after the tsunami hit a month earlier. Korea was an event with strong gusts and big lulls, I have never seen such intense gusty conditions. But the racing was quality and I was happy with my TR-7’s.

The big advantage of having these sails is that you don’t run out of power, and you don’t have to get nervous when the wind drops a bit while waiting for your start, as you can still get off the start line and out of the marks while everyone else is desperately grabbing a bigger sail. I have raced on my 7.6 when others where on 8.6, and I weightt 100 kgs! Also the handling in the gybes is great on the smaller sails.

With another top 10 place finish I returned to Holland where we were treated to a week long of frontal windy

weather and I managed to break my Personal record on the 5.5 to almost 82 km per hour average speed and 85 max. It is fun to keep improving and moving towards the 90 kmph barrier and its only a matter of time, these spots we have there that are so close to home are really of world standard and new records will be reached here!

I also got to sail 5.1 up to 8.4 this week and done more testing for Fanatic further improving the new Falcon 2012 range. Straight from another speed session at the Brace I boarded the plane to Spain for the Costa Brava world cup and arrived tired but very fulfilled. The flight of only 2 hours was like hopping on the bus compared to the traveling lately. With a great forecast to the event, lots more high wind sailing to look forward too!y

My daughter is done with her super-awesome first year of school and now it’s time for some summer fun and mellow family surf time. 2012 Wave and Freestyle sails are now completed and in production just as the North shore wave season has come to a close.

Looking back, we had another great winter of waves and a perfect variety of conditions for thoroughly testing all the new sails. Where else in the world could you have a comparable R&D location for developing wave and high-wind sails than Maui? 9 months of epic wave sailing and 3 months of high wind bump and jump or slalom each year. As a designer, I personally test my own work a minimum of 4 days a week, all season. Whether it’s glassy mast and half surf and super light wind or blowing 40 knots with chop from hell, after finishing up at the loft, I go sail, every afternoon. Feedback from team riders is of great value but there is no substitute for first hand

experience. Every day you notice little things about the rig that you are using, how it relates to the days conditions and to tuning adjustments. If an adjustment is required, you tear the sail apart at the loft the next day, re-cut it and then go sail it again the next afternoon. When our team riders are on island it’s good to go sail together so that you can hear their general feelings about a sail, relate it to your own experience on the sail and turn it into actual, specific design improvements.

This year’s wave and freestyle sail designs are the best ever and you can be sure that each one has received lots of thought, love and thorough testing in the world’s best conditions.

Aloha, Artur Szpunar

Talk about wind, well May has been blowing harder than I can remember, consistently for several weeks now. The sailing has mostly been about slalom training, getting ready for the Maui Race Series and tuning up the TR7’s. The slalom season is about to start here in Maui, but infortunately I’ll miss the first race as I’ll be on the big Island doing the Hawaii Half Ironman triathlon. But my gear is ready to go, the body feels good, boards is smooth and the TR7 race sails have been performing amazingly well in all conditions.

The new wave sails are just about done, our team has been finalizing designs, which look fantastic and yet again have made improvements in handling, control, power. The sails continue to feel light and responsive on the wave, so we are looking forward to the first production run here real soon and getting the sails out into the market.

Aloha, Phil McGain

Wow! It’s racing and competition season again and we have been treated to some good stuff on the PWA circuit. Peter has been showing great speed and has been really happy with his sails, Taty did some more magic in the freestyle world, and Art has put the finishing touches on the new Wave and Freestyle ranges for 2012. Watching the numbers of happy wave sailors grow as Art does his daily thing on the water demonstrating the speed and power that you won’t find anywhere else has been very encouraging. When the sun’s going down and the rest are on the beach thinking ’too little wind’, Art’s still planing.

This month begins the Maui Race Series and that will take us into our accelerated development of the new race sails that now must be ready for end October registration. Peter is constantly giving us up-to-date feedback on how to stretch the range and keeping us up on the relative performance at the highest level. He is a ’lone ranger’ in the slalom racing, managing to stay alive into finals and showing his speed, despite being outnumbered by the sailors from the large brands.

Cornelia has been getting a lot of attention because the motor has been torn down for a complete rebuild of the exhaust, fuel, and cooling system. New gaskets, hoses, hose clamps, water pump, fuel pump, muffler, and belts all came together over Memorial weekend and on Monday afternoon I turned the key and she fired right up. That was truly

A Memorial May has been good for all.satisfying to have all those bits and bolts laying about for many weeks, cleaned and painted the parts, and then got it all back together without too many pieces left over. Getting my big frame into that tiny space again and again, especially getting it out, was like a strange kind of engine room yoga. Thankfully the grease and disgusting foul bilge is gone and done with and we are mobile again. News of sailing next month.
