Matter – Atoms and Elements Review
lesson @discoveryed.com
Essential Standards• NCES.6.P.2 - Understand the structure,
classifications and physical properties of matter
• NCES.6.p.2.1- Recognize that all matter is made up of atoms and atoms of the same element are all alike, but are different from the atoms of other elements.
9/9/2015 Warm-UP• Science is all about puzzling questions:
1. Matter is made up of tiny particles called “atoms.”
How many atoms do you think are in a single drop of water?
2. Name the 3 subatomic particles?

Lesson Questions:• 1. What is the relationship between
atoms and elements?
• 2. How are atoms of one element similar to and different from atoms of other elements?
• Key Vocabulary• atom, element, energy (physical),
mass, • matter, molecule,
Matter is varied because it is
composed of different elements. • Introduction to atomic structure - DE video• http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/as
setGuid/10b67453-90fb-41e9-b559-e748d3ebccd7
• How do we know about atoms and elements?
• After all, these are very tiny –too small to see even with a normal microscope.
• Only very powerful microscopes are able to be used to see atoms.
• Atoms are made of PROTONS, NEUTRONS & ELECTRONS
• Neutrons and protons are located IN the nucleus of an atom
• Electrons orbit AROUND the nucleus.
• Protons are positively charged• Neutrons are neutral – no charge• Electrons are negatively charged
• #1 - What Is the Relationship between Atoms and Elements? • An element is matter in which all of the atoms contain the same number of protons.
• The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom determine what element the atom is.
• An atom of an element never gains or loses protons.
• Atomic Structure: How Elements Differ from Each Other - Video DE
• http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/A7AA9D2C-2E9C-44AA-9D86-C6A4943262F1
• #2 - How Are Atoms of One Element Similar to and Different from Atoms of Other Elements?
• SIMILAR:• All atoms, even atoms of different
elements, are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
• DIFFERENT:• Atoms of one element have a different
number of protons in the nucleus than the atoms of a different element.
What Are Ions and Why Do They
Have Different Charges? • Although atoms of the same element
always have the same number of protons in their nucleus, they can have a different number of electrons.
• The atomic number of an element is also called a proton number. The proton number tells you the number of protons or positive particles in the nucleus of an atom.
• A normal atom has a neutral charge when there are equal numbers of positive and negative particles.
SO
• An atom with a neutral charge is one where the number of electrons is equal to the atomic number or the number of protons.
• Ions are atoms with extra electrons or missing electrons.
• When you are missing an electron or two, you have a positive charge. oThere are more positively charged
protons than there are electrons.• When you have an extra electron or
two, you have a negative charge. oThere are more negatively charged
electrons than there are protons
• The electrons in the atoms of an element determine the element's chemical and physical properties.
9/10 Warm UP• Number your comp book from 1-6 and fill in
the blanks. You can use your guided notes from yesterday!!!
• 1. Atoms are made of _____________, _____________ & _________________.

Review – Atoms and Elements
• 1. What is the relationship between atoms
and elements?• An atom is the smallest particle in an
element that keeps the properties of that element.
• An element is matter in which all of the atoms contain the same number of protons.
• The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus
• The atomic mass is the mass of the protons, neutrons and electrons
• 2. How are atoms of one element similar to and different from atoms of other elements?
Similar - Every atom contains a nucleus, which contains. protons and neutrons . The nucleus is surrounded by electrons. Different - All atoms of the same element have the same number of protons in their nuclei. Atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons in their nuclei.
• The periodic table is a chart containing information about the atoms that make up all matter.
• An element is a substance made up of only one type of atom.
• Atomic number = # of protons
• The number of electrons surrounding the nucleus of an atom is equal to the number of protons in its nucleus.
• Element - Calcium • Symbol - Ca• ATOMIC NUMBER – 20; there are 20 protons
in nucleus • Ca will have ________ # of ELECTRONS?• Atomic Mass -The atomic mass of an
element is based on the mass of the protons, neutrons, and electrons of the atoms of that
element. The majority of the atomic mass is contributed by the protons and neutrons. Electrons don't have much of a mass when compared to a neutron or proton.
