To create the finest, most accurate bows in the world, you have to adapt. From the R & D facility to the manufacturing floor, we are in a constant state

of progress. Always questioning. How can we design a better bow?How can we build it perfectly? We apply some of the latest innovations

in manufacturing to ensure the highest standards of quality and consistency. But we hold tight to our DIY roots, because sometimes there’s nothing

more innovative than the human hand.

Each and every Mathews bow in this Annual is designed and builtin Sparta, Wisconsin, U.S.A.

ACCURATE. ENERGY.The all-new 2016 HALON™ is our hardest hitting flagship bow to date. Inspired by NO CAM™ technology, the Crosscentric™ Cam employs a partially concentric string payout and AVS™ Technology to produce a stealthy draw and consistent accuracy, while delivering speeds up to 353 feet per second. Wider, more torsionally rigid limbs and our new dual bridged riser are designed to support this powerful cam system and endure the toughest hunting conditions. A true center nocking point ensures straight and level nock travel, further enhancing shot-to-shot consistency. Outfitted with the new FlatBack™ Grip and industry leading Harmonic Damper™ and Harmonic Stabilizer Lite,™ the HALON™ is rock solid and deadly quiet.

VENISON MAN-T-T- ATAT TOATOAFeast on this favorite from Mathews HQ

CHEESESTEAK VENISONPOTATO SKINSMakes 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:

4 large russet potatoes

Olive oil

1 pound venison, thinly sliced and chopped into small pieces*

Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

½ medium onion, thinly sliced

1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced or roughly chopped

1 (4 ounces) package oyster or small cremini mushrooms, thinly sliced or roughly chopped

8 ounces (2 cups) shredded creamy Havarti cheese

4 ounces (1 cup) shredded Provolone cheese

Chopped fresh rosemary or chives, if desired

DIRECTIONS:

Heat oven to 400˚F. Place potatoes on a baking sheet;brush generously with oil and bake 1 hour or until tender.Cool about 30 minutes.

Increase oven temperature to 450˚F.

Cut each potato in half lengthwise. Scoop out the majorityof the potato with a spoon, leaving a ¼-inch layer aroundthe skin.

Generously brush the potato skins with oil; season with salt. Place in the oven, skin-side up, for 5 minutes. Turn the potatoes, brush with oil, return to the oven 5 minutes longer or until golden and crisp.

Meanwhile prepare the filling. Heat a griddle or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the onions in olive oil about 5 minutes. Add green pepper and mushrooms and continue to sauté until vegetables are tender.

Add the venison to the pan; sauté to desired doneness.Season with salt and pepper.

Remove the potato skins from the oven and fill them with the venison mixture. Top with the cheeses. Heat the broiler to low.

Place the filled potato skins under the broiler for 3 minutesor until the cheese is melted. Sprinkle with rosemary.

*TIP: A great trick for thinly slicing steak is to place it in freezer for about 10 minutes or until the meat is just starting to firm up but isnot frozen. Slice using your sharpest knife.

Story & Photography: CAL ARNOLD

C al Arnold’s high country Colorado mule deer hunt was pure adventure - 14 days in solitude, living up on the mountain with limited means. Days spent hiking, glassing, and stalking deer -

analyzing every move - nights spent revising strategy and recovering from mental and physical exhaustion. The weather worked against him, and the steep terrain pushed him to his limits. On the last day of his hunt, he caught a split second of movement through his scope, finally spotting the needle in the haystack, and proceeded on a six hour stalk. He posted himself 25 yards above his quarry and waited. When the deer finally stood up, he found Cal at full draw.

5 GEAR TIPS FOR BETTER BACKPACK BOWHUNTING

1) LESS IS MORE: You’ve heard that “ounces make pounds,” but truly keep this mantra in the back of your mind when developing your mountain hunting gear list. Scrutinize everything. Apart from emergency gear, items should get used nearly every day.

2) DOUBLE DUTY: Lightweight, packable items that have more than one use should earn a coveted spot in your pack over items that don’t. The more items that serve double duty, the more value they bring to the comfort and success of your hunt.

3) PACK SMART: Items should be positioned in your pack eciently. For example, I try to keep my rain jacket rolled in its hood, and lightweight, “puy” insulation layers stued into their own sleeve when not in use. That way, they take up less space and can be quickly deployed when an aernoon rainstorm hits or you cool o on a glassing break.

4) NUTRITION, NUTRITION, NUTRITION: This is probably the hardest lesson I’ve learned in the field, and I hope you don’t have to. A good rule of thumb is that if doesn’t contain 160 calories/oz., leave it at home. Of course, every rule is meant to be broken, which comes to be true in the form of freeze fried meals or quick burning items like Clif Shot Blocks. Included is all the foodI’d bring for one full day in the mountain. For extended trips, I’d simply multiply all food items by the number of expected days.

Hydration is just as critical as proper fuel, if not more. I prefer using electrolyte supplements like Nuun tablets in my water bottle.

5) IT’S PERSONAL: The best person to tell you what to bring on a mountain bowhunt is you.Make your list your own and don’t be afraid to include or banish any items you see fit.

| PRO TIPS |

As backpack bowhunters, our obsession with gear will always remain borderline fanatical. Whether packing for the hunt of a lifetime or just a weekend trip, being prepared can make the dierence between cutting a tag and going home empty handed. The correct gear choices will keep you more comfortable, hunting harder and could even save your life.

So here are my tips and a basic pack list. My goal is to shed some light on what’s worked for me in the past and help others get thinking about how to dial in a system that works for them. Keep in mind that a pack list can never be written in stone. I’m always learning from other knowledgeable hunters and ultralight backpackers, so even with all the agonizing analysis - pouring over specs, calories-per-ounce and warmth-to-weight ratios - my list is always in flux.
