Mathematics at TCD

• Increase opportunities for students to gain skills in mathematics using technology.

• Introduce technological tools to instructors and students to help incorporate mathematics within program areas.

Page 3: Mathematics at TCD

Examples• Interactive mathematics activities and tutorials.

• Instructor development of activities with focus in mathematics.

• Student creation of resources and materials to enhance their learning and learning within program area.

Interactive Mathematics Activities

• Instructors identify students encountering difficulty with a math concept in a program area and direct students to a web-site tutorial.

• Students can work autonomously on interactive tutorials and activities.• Math activities are relevant to TCD program areas and other math

classes.

Interactive Math Examples• Binary Numbers Tutorial - Used with Electronics & Computers and

encountered in Algebra and Computer Science Courses.• Length and Measurement Conversion on the Web and With MS Excel -

Used in CAD & Health Occupations and encountered in Geometry, Algebra, & Measurement.

• Percents Tutorial Encountered in many TCD Areas and Algebra classes.

TCD Students• Instructors notice students who are weaker in skills like

measurement, fractions, and algebra.

• Not only at TCD - “I had to teach fraction addition to my juniors today” - Comprehensive HS Teacher.

• TIMSS Results suggest this is commonplace in Middle School and beyond.

Instructor Development• Jim Krudl & Dominic Pacenti enrolled in Curriculum and Instruction 300

from the U of I - Creating a Project

• Project Goal: To create an identification and measurement system for automotive-technology (e.g. Car Engine Classification.)

• Students answer: What is it? Why are we doing this? What is the best instrument to measure it?

Student Creation of Resources• Students use technology (digital cameras, Web design &

uploading, & AutoCAD) to showcase their work.• Students gain ownership of material and develop organization

strategies.• Engage in problem solving experiences, investigations, and

decision making situations.

Future• Instructors currently involved in creating technology intensive modules

incorporating mathematics.

• Continue developing interactive tutorials and activities for students to perform.

• Involve more students in creating projects and developing ideas for topics.

• Reach more program areas with additional activities.
